  • Behold ‘Resource Control’ hat clan

See what our rich and famous: ex- President Goodluck Jonathan, Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa State Governor; Chief Timipre Sylva, ex- Bayelsa State gov; Dr Peter Odili & more are doing with ‘Resource Control’ hat!

The Niger Delta is home to several of Nigeria’s ethnic groups and a variety of bold, colorful cultures. Its bustling communities and  diversity has gifted Nigeria some of the best memories in music, fashion and style. From the Ijaws to the Isokos, to the Urhobos and the Esans, the Efik, Annang and Ikas, the people of the Niger Delta proudly wear their culture and sartorial elegance on their sleeves. But one fashion item seems to unite all these groups as one and is now seen countrywide as one of the region’s biggest headwear exports.

We are talking about the tall, circular and distinct round caps, now popularly known as the ‘Resource Control’ caps, worn by men. Although this fashion item originated from the Ijaw ethnic group, it is now widely worn by all the groups of the Delta and even by Nigerians who are not from the Niger Delta.

The cap became to be known jocularly as ‘Resource control’ around 2005 when the Niger Delta people were agitating for the total control of the oil revenue from their region and most of the Niger Delta delegates wore the cap to the 2005 National Constitutional Conference. Not quite long, others joined the wagon and you will always hear people call those who wear it ‘Resource control’!

These caps come in different shapes and sizes and they may be worn on both simple and complex menswear. On a typical day in the region or in Lagos and Abuja, men can be seen wearing these caps while decked in casuals and dinner wear.

Over the years, some of our politicians and fashionable men have used the resource control cap to create a distinct image for themselves.  Some have turned themselves into brands by wearing exotic, trendy and classic caps to functions.  Politicians and showbiz personalities, ex-President Jonathan, Bayelsa State Governor,  Dickson-; ex- Bayelsa State governor  Sylva; x-Governor of Rivers Dr Odili; Senator Ben Bruce, Pa Edwin Clark and even musician, Tunde Obe, who is Yoruba, are examples of famous people who have created unique styles with caps.

  • Dickson to Sylva: verdict of history will be hard on you

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has said the verdict of history would be hard on a former Governor of the state, Timipre Sylva.

Dickson said that politicians, who desecrated the opportunities to serve and abuse state resources to lure Bayelsa youths to violence would face condemnation in the courts of posterity.

The governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, stressed that politicians buying guns for Bayelsa youths and fanning the embers of violence would have their place of rejection on history’s pages of villainy.

Dickson was reacting to a publication in which Sylva alleged of media plot by the governor to pitch him against the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.

The Governor said that it was rather unfortunate that Sylva descended to level of scavenging for imagined information from the gutters.

He said that while genuine and responsible political leaders responded to real issues, Sylva continually showed that he was yet to extricate himself from the agony of excruciating rejection by Bayelsa people at the polls.

Soriwei said that Dickson was too occupied with execution of his responsibilities as Governor of Bayelsa to devote attention to trivialities especially imagined media reports.

He said that it was the determination of Dickson to finish his administration well and strong insisting the Sylva was one distraction which serious leaders should avoid.

Soriwei said that Sylva’s statement was a product of blackmail inspired by the feared and anticipated consequences of hidden guilt.

He said it was rather sad that Sylva in his desperation to prove his political relevance to his political overlords saw casting aspersions on Dickson as the only route to political relevance.

He said: “Again, we are constrained to react to spurious claims and distractions from Sylva and his cohorts who are bent on misinforming the Nigerian public.

“It is indeed unfortunate that Sylva has descended to the level of scavenging for imagined information in the gutters for the purpose of attacking the Governor.

“While it is the standard for genuine leaders and serious members need politicians to respond to real issues, Sylva is yet to recover from bitterness occasion by his excruciating rejection by his own people.

“Now that Sylva knows that a leaked audio is not emanating from Bayelsa, he may try to catch some sleep. Dickson has great plans for bayelsa and Sylva is a costly distraction no leader would want to afford.

“The recent invectives from Sylva are a product of Blackmail inspired by consequences of some tormenting sense of guilt. When Sylva talks about conscience, Bayelsans shiver! There couldn’t have been better way to advertise hypocrisy.

“While Sylva is worrying over the imagined consequences of a badly buried corpse, we are mindful to remind him once again that the only thing in hot pursuit of him is his shadow.

“When he looks back, he shall find no Dickson. The Governor is miles ahead of him”

  • Sylva to Dickson: you have no fear of God

A former Governor of Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva on Thursday described the incumbent Seriake Dickson as a man without the fear of God.

Sylva, in a statement by his Media Assistant, Julius Bokoru, also described as feeble Dickson’s denial of a plot to create an artificial war between him (Sylva) and the Presidency.

Bokoru said Dickson was shocked because the good people of Bayelsa State alerted Sylva of the plot.

He said: “Our Wednesday statement was clear and direct: Dickson seeks to create a wedge between Sylva and the Presidency through a fake news campaign.

“Dickson has no fear of God. He, therefore, thinks it is man rather than God that determines another man’s fate.

“Hence he speaks of someone’s ‘lifeline in politics’ and ‘the state of mood of his political masters’.

“If he does not know, Dickson needs to be reminded that the prevailing national mood, today, is the presidential elections scheduled for the next few weeks.

“Dickson speaks of conscience but conscience is when you pay civil servants their salaries promptly, conscience is when you don’t attack a courthouse like a thug, conscience is when you don’t elevate violence to the status of a government policy.

“Conscience is when you don’t impoverish a once thriving people and state, conscience is when you don’t fail abysmally at even basic levels of governance, conscience is when you don’t become a nightmare for those you are supposed to govern and conscience is when you don’t tell low level lies”.

Sylva added: “Dickson has no conscience, and that obvious absence of conscience, sadly, comes very naturally to him.

“He has ruled Bayelsa State for almost eight years and he is still obsessing over Sylva, he is still blaming Sylva for his many monumental failures, he is still blaming Sylva for his inability to comprehend the mathematics of good governance after all these years

“We are glad Dickson has denied he is not going to be involved in this mischief. This is good for the people of Bayelsa State, the polity and the country.

“Dickson survives on the politics of blackmail, petty mudslinging, propaganda and fake news. The bright news for the people of Bayelsa State, and Nigeria, is that he has exposed how alien he is to credibility”.

  • Sylva alleges smear campaign in Bayelsa against Presidency

A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday alleged that the incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson, was hatching a plot to begin a smear campaign against the Presidency in the state.

Sylva in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Julius Bokoru, said the aim of the campaign was to pit him against some powerful persons at the Presidency.

But Dickson in a swift reaction described Sylva as an unpopular and desperate politician, whose conscience remained his greatest threat.

Bokoru said Dickson’s method was sponsoring with state resources, journalists in the mainstream media and content providers on the social media to write damning stories against some key figures at the Presidency.

He named Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the President, as a particular target in the fake news campaign adding that the mercenaries responsible for the campaign would leave artificial traces linking the stories to Sylva.

Bokoru said: “What is most surprising here is not the fact that Dickson can cook up a plot as treacherous as this, because when it comes to demonic desperation and sheer cynicism, he has lost the element of surprise.

“But it is the fact that despite being at the twilight of his failed governorship, Dickson still deludes himself with the notion that clutching on to attempts to discredit Sylva can either divert public attention from his years of misrule or burnish up his damaged integrity.

“The Dickson government has been built on layers of empty propaganda that he has sustained with robotic consistency. His habitually high-sounding claims and promises have not produced tangible results to uplift the people he has impoverished for close to eight years”.

Bokoru said having pursued efforts to discredit Sylva since assuming office in February 2012, to no avail, Dickson had settled for a dangerous fake news campaign, give himself a soft-landing.

He said: “Unknown to Dickson, what the people of Bayelsa State need are imaginative economic strategies and tangible deliverables, not glib publicity stunts.

“At the national level, Sylva unmistakably and unequivocally emphasises that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is one he, along with other patriots, helped install in 2015.

“He is all too enthusiastic to repeat this gesture come this February. Sylva is not in the business of unhelpful, petty rivalries in this same government, as the darkest side of Dickson’s generally dark imagination is dreaming to manufacture.

“It is incomprehensible that a man who refused to pay salaries even after the Buhari government’s consistency in allocations, a man who deliberately subjected Bayelsans to undue, undeserved difficulty through this Yuletide, would spend hundreds of millions of naira on terribly scripted propaganda, petty mudslinging, and building castles in the air.

“The public should discountenance the shenanigans of Dickson and his lowly government. While he is exhausting state treasury sparring with the shadow of Sylva, the state has degraded infrastructurally and economically, and violence, both spontaneous and state-inspired, is at the highest ever levels”.

But Dickson said in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Mr. FIdelis Soriwei, that Sylva cut the gnawing image of a troubled man screaming and fleeing at the sight of nobody.

Soriwei said that Dickson was too involved and indeed occupied with the execution of the mandate the Bayelsa people gave to him, to be distracted by the hallucinations of a politician whose lifeline in politics was the state of the mood of his political masters.

He said that it was queer and absurd that Sylva did not point to any particular story in the media but was only spewing out fake news that a report would be released to the public soon.

He challenged Sylva to come clean on any particular sin he might have committed against the Chief of Staff, who had no issue whatsoever with Dickson.

He said: “This type of report falls short of the standard of a story that should command a place in our respected media space. Somebody of the exalted status of a former Governor is crying wolf where there is none and hallucinating that Governor reputed to be his political nemesis is after him.

“The point to note is that the Governor is too busy with the execution of the mandate given to him by Bayelsans in place of Sylva to be bothered by anticipated clashes between Sylva and the President’s Chief òf Staff.

“This comic claim by Sylva and his minion is a classic example of the wicked on flight at the sight of nobody. The fact is that Sylva is so scared and intimidated by the shadow of Dickson, that his nightmares about him occur in the day time.

“We hope Sylva is not having sleepless night over the possibility of yet another “leaked audio” in this era of “double speak and doubt thoughts.”

Soriwei stressed that while Dickson worked hard to put his name on all the life changing, big ticket developmental projects in Bayelsa, Sylva would be remembered for the descent to lawlessness, the slaughter of the innocent encapsulated in his killing machine, Famutangbe.

“Sylva’s regime is one bitter story of the locust, pain, misery, waste and misrule in Bayelsa . His rejection by the Bayelsa people only showed the decision of the people to reject stagnation and sterility in governance.”

  • Dickson to youths: Shun criminals masquerading as politicians

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, at the weekend implored youths to be wary of criminals and cultists masquerading as politicians in the state ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Dickson said that the sole motivation of such unscrupulous characters was to destabilize and subvert the achievements of his administration in the past seven years.

Speaking at a media chat in Yenagoa, the governor advised politicians not to overheat the polity in their campaigns insisting that people should be free to campaign and vote candidates of their choice.

He said Bayelsa was one of the safest and most stable in the country as a result of the huge investments his administration made in the security sector of the state.

He also urged parents and guardians to be committed in monitoring and observing the behaviour and activities of their children  as the government intensified the campaign against the scourge of cultism and drug abuse.

The governor commended the security services for their determination and commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizenry.

But he called on leaders at all levels to promote peaceful coexistence.

He ascribed the frequent change of Police Commissioners in the state to a sinister plot by the leadership of the opposition in the state.

Dickson stressed that while it was not within his constitutional powers to determine postings of police chiefs,  it was his responsibility to ensure that things were done properly to secure the state.

He said the recent signing of the law amending the Community Safety and Vigilante Corps would create increased opportunity for the citizens to participate more effectively in the security of their state.

He  noted that his administration took deliberate steps to stabilize the state through infrastructure and human capacity development in the past seven years.

He said: “Bayelsa remains one of the safest and most stable states in this region and in Nigeria. This is as a result of a lot of factors and measures put in place by this administration. The leadership of this state has shown maturity in how we have been managing things, even matters that are provocative.

“I want to commend the people of Bayelsa for their peaceful disposition and commitment to peace and order.

“Though there are few challenges that are quite troubling, such as cultism and drug abuse, particularly as it involves young people, the security services are doing their best to ensure the state is safe and stable for the citizenry even during this Christmas period.

“Political, traditional, community and religious leaders should mobilise people to ensure and promote peaceful co-existence and those taking advantage of lapses in the security and structural imbalances and weak judicial system to desist.

“I also want to caution people, especially the youths of our state not to be misled by criminals masquerading as politicians who buy guns and ammunition to kill and main people. It is very important that people are free to canvass for votes and also vote their preferred candidates.

“Politicians should not take advantage of their authority and power to overheat the polity but go on with their campaigns peacefully as those planning to wreak havoc in this state will be surely dealt with.”

The governor further said that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC),  which was established with the objective of aiding the development of the Niger Delta was doing nothing about the region.

“NDDC is doing nothing. They are not even around to plan anything with anybody. Everything is just politics to them. When they started, they were doing one or two things but now, they do nothing.”

  • Ex-IYC chief, four others in Bayelsa exco

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has sworn in a former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, as commissioner for Youth and Development.

Four persons – Victor Sam-Ateki (Special Duties for Eastern District); Arthur Andrew (Ministry of State for Special Services); Pius Jonah (Special Projects) and Peter Afagha (commissioner for Power) – were sworn in with Eradiri.

Dickson urged Eradiri, a prominent Niger Delta activist, to tackle cultism and other vices among youths.

He called for action against the upsurge of crime and vices, such as cultism, violence and drug abuse in Niger Delta.

Dickson stressed the need for leaders in Niger Delta to fight cultism, drug abuse and other vices capable of truncating destinies of youths.

The governor urged Eradiri to develop a template to sensitise and reorientate youths for positive ventures.

He said: “Cultism is not only in the universities, it is shocking that 11 to 12-year olds are now deadly cultists. We have to recover as many of these young ones as possible. I enjoin political and religious leaders to join in this task. Woe betide leaders who deceive these youths that cultism is the way to success.

“A good number of youths have been deceived into thinking they have to kill to succeed. I, therefore, call on Niger Delta leaders to rise up to the challenge of cultism and drug abuse for us to safeguard the future of youths with abundant potential.”

Eradiri promised to revolutionise the relationship between the office of youth commissioner and youths.

He warned them against cultism and thuggery, promising to ensure that Bayelsa becomes the hub of Information and Communication Technology in future.
