    Evangelise Africa, Seun Kuti preaches

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has said the job of spreading Pan Africanism should be borne by Africanists themselves.

Seun said this on Sunday at Kalakuta Museum, Ikeja, Lagos during a colloquium organised by Pan-African Consciousness Renaissance, as part of activities to mark this year’s edition of Felabration. He said, just the way religious evangelists preached their gospel, so also Pan Africanists must preach Africanism.

“Each one, tell one,” the fiery son of the late Fela Kuti who has led the Egypt 80 Band said. “In the late eighties, the early nineties, (there were) evangelists everywhere. So, we have to be Africa’s evangelists. We need to go on the streets. Me, I think I’m the biggest evangelists because I have the music for pan Africanism. I use my music everywhere I go. Everything I say is dedicated to preaching African unity.”

About a fortnight ago, Seun Kuti released a new 3-song EP titled Struggle Sounds on Sony Music Masterworks. The EP which is co-produced by Robert Glasper has songs like Gimme My Vote Back C.P.C.D, Struggle Sounds and African Dreams. The C.P.C.D stands for Corporate Public Control Department.

CONTROVERSIAL Afrobeat musician and scion of late Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti, has taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari for cancelling a scheduled trip to the Niger Delta, to flag-off the clean-up of oil spills in Ogoniland, Rivers State following a United Nations Environment Report.

Taking to his Facebook account, Seun lambasted Buhari, saying he never cancels foreign trips.

“Na only local trips our pressido dey cancel,” Seun wrote in pidgin English. “E no say Una no get money to pay salary let alone give him the enjoyment he needs but mention for before the reign baba don dey pj, cross leg dey smile with news paper”

Some people have speculated that the cancelling of the visit was due to terrorist activities of the Niger Delta Avengers, a speculation which Seun highlighted.

“If our president dey fear Niger delta avengers Omo we the people don hear weeeeeen oooooo.”

On May 23, President Buhari was also unavailable for a working visit to Lagos State where he was to commission some projects executed by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration.

    Seun Kuti blasts senators’ profligacy

The demands of members of the Nigerian senate have attracted the scorn of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti.

Seun, who is following in the footsteps of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, of condemning extravagant spending by politicians and government officials, took to his Facebook account yesterday where he posted a picture of a Sunday newspaper of April 17, 2016, with a headline ‘Senate buys 108 jeeps at twice price’.

The headline bulleted that Senate ‘pays N35m for each Land Cruiser’ despite a  ‘showroom price is N17m each.’ The story also bulleted that ’36 vehicles distributed, others to arrive in May.’

The Afrobeat musician made reference to Senator Ben Murray-Bruce who advocates ‘Common Sense’ and ‘Buy Naija’ revolution in the Senate.

‘When it comes to luxury ‘common sense’ is quiet ooooo. Lol. What happened to (Innoson) the motor guy? Na Toyota dem wan drive? Wake up people.’

He then added the hashtags, * #ýtearitdown and * #ýhouseofmisrepresentatives and continued in a second post.

‘OK dear Nigerian, you have to answer this question please,’ he said.

‘If one Land Cruiser is 35 million naira, how much is Rolls Royce Phantom?’

He then took a swipe at the children of the lawmakers, writing, ‘If you are their kids, your hashtag should be#ashamedofmyparents, * #ýchildrenofthieves.’

  • Why marijuana should be legalised, by Seun Kuti

Why marijuana should be legalised, by Seun Kuti

Afro beat singer, Seun Kuti, has said that the Nigerian government was ill advised to ban the use of marijuana, believing that the decision is a carryover of colonial law.

According to the artiste, “There are doctors and scientists who believe that marijuana should be legalised. There are also lawyers, judges, and politicians who believe that the war on drugs is a false war. That is actually a war on the poor people all over the world, because poor people and rich people use drugs to be sane. But you will find that here, people are in jail more for drug use.”

Going further, he said, “We as Africans had no reason to ban marijuana. It was done out of the U.S. lobby, forcing our governments to ban the drug. I don’t think that the Nigerian government has ever carried out any independent research on marijuana. One of the biggest markets in the world for marijuana in the world is Israel (which is a more religious country than Nigeria). But they understand the benefits… especially the economic benefits. So much wealth can be generated from it, but that is another issue entirely.”

Seun, a father of one, says that he does not believe in marriage for the simple reason that it is a power game. “It is a thing of ego, of domination and submission. I think humanity is gradually moving away from it from the number of marriages that don’t even work. In the ones that work, someone has to submit, someone has to give up who they are for the other person for it to work; especially the women, if no one agrees to do that, the marriage won’t work. Women are more independent,” he said.

The singer, who studied Popular Music and Sound Technology at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, going further with his thoughts of marriage, and women’s liberation said that his grandmother Mrs. Funmilayo Kuti, a foremost nationalist and feminist did not have a great relationship with her husband after she became independent. “My father told me that when his father died, his mother told him she and her husband had not been speaking for 10 years, even though they lived in the same house… staying together because of the children. My grandfather was a reverend, so divorce was not an option. Not like Chris Oyakhilome, or Chris Okotie that divorced, they swore an oath to God, and still broke the oath.”

Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, has launched THC, a tee shirt line.

Taking to his Facebook account yesterday to make the announcement, Seun who is currently in the US leg of his international tour of Europe and America posted: ‘Excited about the 2015 tee shirt line. THC#thehighercounsciousness.#seunkuti&egypt80 available at every show.’

The musician also posted four different images of himself decked on the T-Shirts. THC or The Higher Consciousness which Seun refers to is a play on THC, the short form of Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in the cannabis plant.

Responding to a comment which asked if it was a coincidence that THC, the name of the brand, is also the active ingredient in marijuana, Seun responded: ‘If u zoom the shirt on the boss, then u will have ur answer.’

He followed with another comment writing ‘saving u the trouble’ and attaching a close-up of the T-shirt.

At a corner of the ‘higherconcsciousness’ inscription is the unmistakable marijuana plant, white in a circle of red.

Seun, son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who regularly used marijuana and referred to it as grass, has also adopted the herb. Seun’s song, The Good Leaf, hails the good properties of marijuana.

  • SEUN KUTI SLAMS UK GUARDIAN ARTICLE

SEUN KUTI SLAMS UK GUARDIAN ARTICLE

SEUN Kuti who is currently on an international tour with his band, Egypt 80, has discredited an article published by The Guardian UK of Tuesday.

The article, titled ‘Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 review – less rhetoric, more musicianship please’, which praised the musical prowess of Seun and the Egypt 80 Band was scathing about Seun’s political stance which the writer inferred was unlike his dad’s, the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

‘This was a sometimes triumphant, sometimes awkward show in which he showed how he has developed Fela’s Afrobeat style,’ the article described the band’s recent outing at Ronnie Scott’s in London, ‘but was less successful when it came to following his dad’s political stance.’

‘They can’t stand me at The Guardian,’ said Seun, who posted a link to the article on his Facebook page.

The article also said Seun’s music highlighted sexism, racism, and corruption rather than voice what could have been Fela’s thought on Nigeria’s new president.

But this doesn’t deter the young Kuti.

‘Well, better be prepared because I am telling our story unapologetically,’ he continued. ‘Sexist? I can’t believe The Guardian would lie. @theguardianuk you might not understand but your rhetoric is worse than mine and we are telling our stories now. Well, to you too; more news less lies.’

  • Seun Kuti defends Oba of Lagos

Seun Kuti defends Oba of Lagos

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, has fiercely come to the defense of Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, over the purported comments credited to him. The Lagos monarch, before the denial of the statement by the palace, was quoted to have threatened Lagos-based Igbos who wouldn’t vote the APC Lagos governorship candidate, Akinwumi Ambode, in Saturday’s election, with drowning.

“Who are these people lying against the throne of Lagos?” Seun Kuti asked on his Facebook page. “I am sure the Oba of Lagos didn’t say those words cos if he did his days on the throne are numbered. For he is a father to all children and a host to all guests!”

An online publication, Freedom Online, was quoted as reporting that the Oba of Lagos had threatened the Igbos over the guber election.

Engaging his fans in the conversation, Seun Kuti, who is as fearless as his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti on political issues, said he trusts the Oba and believes the whole show is another trick of the PDP, APC’s leading opposition.

“I don’t have to wait for that to be refuted I can already see it’s the usual PDP dirty politics,” he wrote.

In an earlier post, Seun Kuti had written: “The callousness of the PDP is unrelenting oooo. Imagine the Igbos agreed yesterday to abandon a sinking ship and then the PDP tries to sell a lie that they will be drowned by the rescue boats. Isn’t that just wicked?”
