  • Seven die in Enugu accident

    Seven persons, including an eight-month-old baby, died in an accident at Ugwuoba on the Enugu/Onitsha expressway.

    The accident involved an articulated vehicle (KTU 31 XA), as well as two Mitsubishi buses: XE 911 JJT and FGG 233 XG.

    A statement by spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said the articulated vehicle collided with one of the buses, which hit the other.

    The identities of the deceased were yet to be ascertained.

    Other injured passengers were rushed to Salvation and Faith Hospitals, Oji River.

    The bodies were deposited at General Hospital mortuary, Oji River.

    Amaraizu added that investigation has begun.

    Seven die, 19 injured in crashes

    Seven persons died and 19 others were injured yesterday in two accidents in Lagos.
    Five of them died when their commercial bus caught fire while descending the stadium bridge around Barracks Bus Stop in Surulere. Five were injured.
    The two others died in Gbagada off the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway when another commercial bus and a Mazda car collided. Fourteen were injured.
    According to Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the five including a child, three women and a man, were burnt beyond recognition when their Volkswagen bus marked AND996XC caught fire.
    The rescued were rushed to hospital.

    The Gbagada accident, which happened around 3pm near a filling station, involved another Volkwagen commercial bus marked GGE716XM and the Mazda car with number – plate marked MUS554XP. The driver of the bus, which was coming from Mile12, was among the injured.
    According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the bus was trying to avoid being hit by a speeding Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The bus turned right without knowing that it was near a culvert.
    It climbed the culvert, summersaulted and collided with the Mazda, which is used as a taxi.
    The Nation learnt that some of the passengers tried to jump out of the bus to no avail.
    According to some Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), officials, the driver and two others were inside the taxi.
    The accident, caused a gridlock, which took the LASTMA officials an hour to clear.
    The vehicles have been towed to Anthony Police Station.
    The Lagos State Environmental Health and Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), it was learnt, took the bodies to the morgue.
    The injured were taken to Gbagada General Hospital and the Trauma Centre at Ikeja by Lagos State Ambulance Bus (LASAMBUS) and the LASEMA paramedics.
    A statement by LASEMA said its Emergency Response Team (ERT) received a distress call around 3:05 pm about the accident.
    The statement said: “This prompted the immediate activation of the agency’s ERT to the scene. A Volkwagen commercial bus with registration number GGE716XM had a head on collision with another vehicle, Mazda Taxi.
    “Two lives were lost and have been moved by SEHMU to the Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary, while the damaged vehicles were recovered with the aid of the agency’s towing truck to avoid another incident and ensure free flow of traffic in the area.”
    LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu advised motorists to drive within the speed limit to avoid accidents.

    Seven die in Ondo accident

    Seven people died yesterday in an accident at Amurin on Akure-Owo Expressway in Owo Local Government of Ondo State.

    The incident, which occurred around 2 am, was said to have been caused by over speeding by the driver of a Peugeot J5 bus, registered as BKK 424 XA.

    It was gathered the driver collided with a truck, registered as NA 1087 BO5.

    Thirteen passengers were injured, and are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo.

    As at yesterday, identities of the dead are still unknown.

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials refused to comment.

    But police spokesman Femi Joseph confirmed the accident.

    He said: “The truck driven by Sgt Ashima Abdullahi broke down and was parked beside the road when the bus rammed into it.”

    Seven schoolgirls die in hostel fire

    Seven pupils died on Sunday night when a “mysterious” fire razed the Government Girls’ Secondary School (GGSS) at Jogana, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

    The fire, according to an eyewitness, started at 8.10pm, when the pupils were preparing to go to bed.

    A security man, who pleaded not to be named, said: “…The school was in darkness because there was no power supply. The pupils had taken their dinner and were preparing to retire to bed when we heard the girls screaming from Alhaji Sani Yaro Ahmed Hostel.

    “We thought they were being attacked by rapists. But we saw thick smoke coming out of the hostel. As we rushed to the place, there was stampede: the pupils struggled to escape from the fire.”

    It was learnt that the casualty figure was high because the pupils rushed through a narrow gate, which caused the stampede.

    The eyewitness confided that the death of the seven pupils was as a result of a stampede that ensued when they were struggling to escape from the narrow gate of the hostel when the fire engulfed the hostel.

    Our reporter, who visited the school yesterday, observed that the Alhaji Sani Yaro Ahmed Hostel, the largest of the 13 in the school, was reduced to rubble.

    The eight apartments, housing over 200 pupils, was also razed.

    The headteacher, Hajia Khadijat J. Gambo, was speechless.

    When our reporter sought her comment on the incident, she said: “You can see it all. I am a sad woman. I have managed to file my reports to the appropriate authorities and I have been instructed not to speak.”

    As at the time of filing this report, the school management had handed over the bodies of the dead to their parents.

    Kano State Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar, who doubles as commissioner for Education, described the incident as mysterious.

    He confirmed the death of the seven pupils, adding that the government would pay the bills of the injured, who are getting treatment at government hospitals.

    Abubakar, who read the welcome address during the inauguration of State and Local Government Education Promotion Committees at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, told the gathering about the incident.

    He said: “This event is holding because it has already been planned. There was a fire at the GGSS, Jogana. Seven girls died and 25 others were injured. We pray for the repose of their souls and quick recovery of the injured.”

    The deputy governor said the incident occurred at 8:30pm on Sunday, adding: “…The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained; it remains mysterious.”

    Police Commissioner Mohammed Musa Katsina also visited the school.

    Addressing reporters on the incident, Katsina said: “You are aware it was a fatal fire, which led to the death of seven pupils. Many others were injured. I am moved and I stand in solidarity with the people of the state in this moment of grief. I console the state government, parents of these pupils and other people of Kano. May Allah give us the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

    It was learnt that the school, which was established 40 years ago, has experienced three “mysterious” fire incidents.
