  • ‘How I escaped being used for rituals in Oyo’

    A middle-aged sex worker on Wednesday narrated how she managed to escape being used for money rituals by suspected internet fraudsters.

    The lady whose name and identity was preferred to be made anonymous for security reasons narrated her ordeals while been kept in custody by security operatives in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

    In a statement during the handing over of two suspected internet fraudsters to the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Zonal Office, the middle-aged woman said she had joined the boys alongside some other friends from a club to pass the night with the boys unaware of their antics and intentions.

    The suspects, Sanusi Azeez Toba and Osho Olalekun Micheal, arrested at Kolapo Ishola, Akobo area of Ibadan were handed over to the Oyo State’s special anti-crime patrol outfit codenamed, “Operation Burst”, after the escaped victims reported the matter to them.

    She added that she had to jump down from a two storey building where she and others were taken hostage and later scale a fence when she noticed the boys were acting funny in the middle of the night.

    She said “We met at the club last night and we all went back to their apartment to sleep over. At some point I noticed some funny movement and saw them with a calabash (a native pot).

    “That was when I knew they were ritualists with the intention to use me for rituals. So I jumped off the two-storey building, and off the fence. I then reported the case to the ‘Operation Burst’”

    Preliminary investigations have also revealed that the suspects have various incriminating documents stored in the laptops and phones recovered from them at the point of arrest.

    The development is coming even as operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Commission also on Wednesday, arrested another twelve suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo Boys’

    While six of the suspects were arrested at 2nd Pipeline, Ologunerun, Ibadan, the other five were picked up at a location in Ijebu-Remo, Ogun State.

    Those from Ibadan are Akinbinu Akinfemi, Wasiu Adeyemi, Idowu Samson, Tijani Usman, Saheed Eniafe and Adeyi Victor.

    Benson Gospel, Abdulazeez Gafar, Agbumabiwon Abiodun, Abayomi Awotedu, and Bukayo Abiodun were apprehended at Ijebu Remo.

    Ranging between the ages of 17 and 29 years, the alleged fraudsters’ arrests were occasioned by petitions from their neighbours, detailing their alleged fraudulent activities.

    The alleged acts include love scam and other forms of internet fraud through which they obtain money from unsuspecting victims.

    Items recovered from them include laptops, mobile phones and several documents containing false pretences.

    “All the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded”, a source within the Ibadan zonal office of the commission noted.

  • Sex worker accused of stealing N80, 000

    An Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court has granted N50, 000 bail to a sex worker, Favour Eze, accused of stealing her colleague’s N80, 000.

    Chief Magistrate Michael Olubi gave her bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He adjourned till January 30.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ferdinand Asu told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 6 at Roland Hotel, Apapa, Lagos. He said the complainant, Ogechi Eze, accused Eze of entering her hotel room to steal the money kept in a drawer.

    “The complainant said the accused and two others were sitting with her at the hotel bar when she suddenly discovered that the key to her room was missing.

    “Unknown to the complainant, Eze had secretly gone to steal the money she kept in the room.

    “On getting there, the complainant discovered that the money she kept in the drawer was missing.

    “The complainant said unfortunately for the accused, she left her phone on the bed after stealing the money,” Asu said.

    The prosecutor told the court that the complainant reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested.

  • Police nab commercial sex worker for ‘killing’ customer

    A Delta State Police Command has arrested a commercial sex worker for allegedly stabbing her customer to death.

    The victim, a married man and father of five, died following injuries sustained in a fracas at a brothel in Asaba.

    Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident, said the incident occurred at DESTAR Hotel on July 18.

    He said: “The suspect is in our custody. A day after the incident, the ‘C’ Division in Asaba carried out preliminary investigation and transferred it to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). As I speak to you, homicide detectives have begun investigation into the case to unravel what transpired between the suspect and the victim, to establish culpability.”

    The hotel was deserted following the incident. The few commercial sex workers on the premises described the incident as unfortunate, lamenting that business is at standstill.

    A sex worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, urged customers to pay agreed money to commercial sex workers.

  • Sex worker docked for ‘cutting colleague’s face with blade’

    A 29-year-old commercial sex worker, Beauty Tagbami, is facing trial at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly cutting the face of her colleague with a razor blade.

    The accused, who lives in a hotel, appeared on a two-count charge of unlawful assault and assault, causing bodily harm.

    Tagbami entered a “not guilty” plea.

    The prosecutor, Cousin Adams, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 23 at 2:50 a.m. at Lagoon Hotel, Sari-Iganmu in Orile, Lagos.

    He said the accused and the complainant, Tope Olayinka, had a brawl over “hawking space” and in the process, Tagbami, used a blade and scissors to slash Olayinka’s face and hand.

    “Tagbami had warned Olayinka not to encroach on her space where she parades herself for customers and this led to a fight between them.”

    The offences contravened sections 172 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O.O.A. Fowowe-Erusiafe, admitted the accused to a N50, 000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned further hearing till August 28.

    Acclaimed South African artist found guilty of murdering sex worker

    Internationally acclaimed South African artist Zwelethu Mthethwa on Thursday was found guilty of murdering a sex worker in the city of Cape Town in April 2013.

    “The Western Cape High Court convicted Mthethwa, whose paintings and photographs have been shown in over 50 solo exhibitions around the world of murder.

    “The conviction was based on footage from a surveillance camera and a car tracking device,’’ a media report said.

    It said that the video footage showed the 57-year-old artist parking his Porsche, crossing the road and striking down a woman on a sidewalk.

    “He then repeatedly and forcefully kicked and hit the woman’s head and body and drove off in his car.

    “The 23-year-old sex worker’s dead body was found by a security guard about an hour after the incident,’’ the media report noted.

    Judge Patricia Goliath said the camera footage acted as a “silent witness.’’

    However, Mthethwa did not testify or hand in a plea. (dpa/NAN)

  • Guard ‘tortures’ sex worker

    A security guard, Muhammed Useni, 19, has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly torturing a sex worker.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Useni was brought to court on a charge of assault, occasioning grievous harm.
    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted N20, 000 bail with one surety in the like sum.
    Magistrate Omolaja Kazeem said the surety must be a family member of the accused and must be gainfully employed.
    Prosecuting Inspector Philip Osijiale told court that the accused had on February 28 at about 4:20a.m., at Avalon in Lekki, Lagos, unlawfully assaulted one Miss Folashade Kolawole.
    He alleged that the accused flogged Kolawole with a horse whip, inflicting serious bruises on her.
    The prosecutor said Useni beat the complainant to pulp, claiming that she used his duty post to solicit customers after his warning failed to make her leave the spot.
    “Useni claimed that he caught her there again with one of her numerous customers, which led to the whipping.”
    Osijiale said that the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The section prescribes three years imprisonment for the offender, if found guilty.
    The case was adjourned till March 22.

    Suspected sex worker docked for N17, 800 theft

    A 33-year-old woman, Blessing Uche, was yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for alleged theft of N17, 800 and stripping herself naked in public to resist arrest.

    The accused, who is facing a three-count charge of assault, stealing and resisting arrest, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Corporal Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 6, at the Railway Line in Otto area of Lagos.

    Osuji said that Uche, an alleged sex worker, stole the sum of N17, 800 from one Shaibu Umoru.

    The prosecutor told the court that the accused stripped her naked when the police came to her arrest, thereby frustrating them from doing their lawful duty.

    “She stripped herself naked in public and caused public nuisance and disturbance,’’ he said.

    Chief Magistrate Olatunbosun Abolarinwa granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Abolarinwa adjourned the case till July 8 for mention.
