  • Sex for marks: Victim volunteers to appear before panel

    • Denies invitation by OAU

    A female post graduate student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Ms Monica Osagie, who is allegedly involved in a “sex for marks” scandal with a senior lecturer, Prof. Richard Akindele, has volunteered to appear before the university’s probe panel.

    She denied that she was invited over the issue and refused to appear before any investigative panel as claimed by the school authorities through a press statement from the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju.

    The victim’s advocate, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, who is a human rights attorney and gender activist, in a statement, said she was in contact with Ms. Osagie and has her instructions to inform the management of her willingness to appear before any school panel if and when duly invited.

    Calling on the school to ensure due diligence in this case, the rights activist expressed concern about sexual exploitation which she said has reached pandemic proportions in “our universities because institutions have failed to put in place appropriate mechanisms for complaint and redress relating to sexual harassment.”

    She lamented that because the perpetrators of sexual misconducts enjoy impunity they always go unpunished.

    According to her, in this case Ms Osagie made efforts to inform senior members of the Faculty about her predicament but no one was able or willing to intervene leaving her to resort to self- help in documenting her evidence.

    “While commending the University for issuing the press release on the audio recording, I call on the school management to do everything within the law and to act to ensure that justice is done and that institutional and academic ethics are rebuilt and restored in the university.

    “As an alumnus of the Obafemi Awolowo University like many prominent Nigerians, I would like to see the institution take back its former reputation of being one of the best and leading universities in Nigeria.”

     

  • Literature, sex and the Nobel

    Literature, good literature, is hardly sans sex. A good and engrossing book is hardly complete without an element of sex. But do not make a mistake, in literature when we talk about sex it is not the same thing as pornography. Pornography is no literature for a mature mind.

    In the last few weeks, the world’s greatest and best known and coveted Literary Prize – the Nobel- has been engrossed in controversy over allegations of sexual harassment and undue favours.     It has not garnered much media frenzy as that of Harvey Weinstein the Hollywood film czar, whose film company is likely to go under because of the allegations.

    The Nobel literature committee has been hit by allegation of sex scandal of a proportion which could also be written into a novel that could form one of a winner’s bodies of works. According to reports, an important member of the elite committee, Jean-Claude Arnault, who was described as “a major cultural figure with close ties to the academy”, has been accused by 18 women of sexual assault and harassment.

    In the wake of the allegation, three members of the committee have resigned to save the prize from being tainted. The accused, Arnault is married to a poet, Katarina Frostenson, who is a member of the academy. He and his wife are said to be running a private cultural club, which receives generous funding from the academy.

    The accusation against him is that he had in the past sexually harassed women at the club and the academy-owned properties in Stockholm and Paris over a 20-year period! That was not all; he was also alleged to be the source of leaks of names of winners of the prize. How Arnault has survived this long is perhaps another plot for a prize winning novel.

    The Nobel literature prize has for long been in the eye of the storm for many, especially for most of us Africans who continue to feel that the prize has been long skewed against the brightest writers of the continent perhaps because of their political beliefs, affiliation or world view.

    For years many have believed that Kenya’s most distinguished and accomplished writer Ngig) wa Thiong’o, Ghana’s preeminent author Ayi Kwei Armah and a few others should have won it after Wole Soyinka, Nadine Gordimer and JM Coetzee.

    In its reaction to the scandal, the Nobel Foundation had in a statement said, “Confidence in the Swedish Academy has been severely damaged. It is not yet possible to say how this will damage the Nobel Prize. It takes a long time to repair damaged confidence. The Swedish Academy’s members must now put their mission before their individual interests to restore faith in the Academy’s important work with the Nobel Prize in Literature.”

    The Nobel Prize is Sweden’s greatest gift to the world and so must not be seen to be corrupted. This prompted King Carl XVI Gustaf to add his voice saying, “The conflicts which have arisen within the Swedish Academy are deeply unfortunate and risk seriously damaging the Academy’s important functions.”

    I hope not.

  • Sex for marks

    Is it true that a Professor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) demanded to sleep with a female student as a condition for adding to her score in a course taught by the lecturer as revealed in an audio tape circulating online?

    Hopefully, the panel set up by the management of the institution will confirm the truth about the matter and recommend appropriate measures to curb such shameful incidents in higher institutions.

    However, if the content of the audio is anything to go by, the matter is a very clear one. The female student based on an outstanding discussion with the professor put a call through to him to confirm the condition for her request to be granted.

    The shameless, unguarded professor was too lost in his wayward ways that he didn’t realise that he was being recorded. The student repeatedly mentioned the name of the professor apparently to prove that the person she was speaking with is her randy lecturer who is old enough to be her father, but had no inhibition about negotiating for five rounds of sex.

    From the kind of things the professor said in the call, he must have engaged in this reprehensible act for long and nemesis has just now finally caught up with him. For a man of his status and the high moral standard expected of lecturers, there is no basis for him to have entertained any sexual discussion with any student over marks.

    It is not unusual for students who fail to get required pass mark to plead for additional marks, especially if they are a few marks away from the cutoff point, it is left for the lecturers concerned to dismiss such request and even further penalise such students for having the audacity to ask for such favour.

    However, because some lecturers are known to engage in all manners of deals over examination scores, some students who fail are usually bold to try their luck. While some ask for sex like the professor, others demand for payments.

    The issue of sexual escapades of lecturers is not new as some are very brazen about it and go to the extent of deliberately failing female students to force them to yield to their demands. There have been instances where some lecturers collude to fail some targeted female students to give the false impression that it is not a case of one lecturer failing a student, but that the student failed more than one course.

    The professor is just unlucky to have been caught in the act unlike many others who are notorious for sleeping with students they are supposed to be teaching academically and morally.

    If only adequate measures were taken to penalise known culprits, the moral decadence on campuses at the top would not have degenerated to the level it is now. There are even cases of willing female students who are awarded undeserved high marks above others in compensation for what they gave in kind.

    The OAU is yet another test case to demonstrate the seriousness of university authorities to curb sexual excesses of lecturers who have refused to live up to the high expectations of their positions.

    COMPLAINING of being starved of sex by her husband, a 35-year-old businesswoman, Mrs Bilikisu Azeez, yesterday asked an Igando Customary Court to dissolve her five-year-old marriage.

    “Please dissolve this union so that I can move on with my life, my body is not wood or stone,” the woman told the court.

    She said her husband, Olusesi Azeez, starved her of sex for more than two years, adding that this is affecting her health.

    “My husband has been starving me of sex since he married his youngest wife, he has turned me to an abandoned property.

    “I have been falling sick in and out of hospital, during my last visit to the hospital, I was told that it was because I have had sex for long that is why I experience frequent sickness.”

    She also accused her husband of not caring for her and the only child of their marriage, saying “my husband does not take care of me, I feed and clothe myself.

    “He refused to enrol our only child, who is over four years old in school and has failed to pay his medical bills; I always run to my mother for the hospital bill.”

    Bilikisu, who also accused her husband of battery, said he once beat her up in the public.

    According to her, the trouble started when her husband married another woman.

    She added: “There was joy, love and peace in the house until he came with another wife, who has been fighting me also.”

    In his response, Azeez agreed that he starved his wife of sex, saying: “She once denied me of sex and since then I abandoned her. Yes, I starved her of sex, it is tit for tat because there was a day I entered her room to sleep with her and she left the bed to sleep on the floor.

    “I made an attempt eight times to sleep with her, but she refused. So since that day, I just put her aside after all she is not the only wife I have’’.

    The 45-year-old building contractor agreed to the dissolution of the union, saying : “I am no longer interested in the marriage.”

    The court’s President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, after listening to the estranged couple, advised them to explore a possible reconciliation of the crisis.

    He fixed judgement for April 12.

    “Please court, divorce the union so that I can move on with my life. My body is not a wood nor a stone.”

    The petitioner said that her husband denies care to her and the only child of the marriage.

    “My husband does not take care of me, I feed and clothe myself.

    “He refuses to enrol in school our only child who is over four-year-old and always refuses to pay medical bill whenever the boy is sick.

    “I always run to my mother to get the funds to settle the medical bill.”

    Bilikisu also accused her husband of battery. She said he once beat her in public and she fainted.

    She said that trouble started since the day her husband brought in the third wife.

    “There was joy, love and peace in the house when it was only I, my husband, his first wife, and the children.

    “The new wife always fights me and curses my child.”

    Olushesi did not deny the allegation of sex starvation, but blamed Bilikisu for being the architect of her problem.

    The respondent said that his wife once denied him sex and since then he abandoned her.

    “Yes, I starved her of sex. It is tit-for-tat. There was a day I entered her room to sleep with her, she left the bed to sleep on the floor.

    “I made an attempt eight times to sleep with her, but she refused. Since that day, I just put her aside, after all she is not the only wife I have.”

    The 45-year-old building contractor said that he used to care for his child and wife. He claimed being responsible for the foodstuffs bought at home.

    He consented to the dissolution of the marriage and urged the court to grant his wife her wish as he was no longer interested in the marriage.

    The court president, Mr Akin Akinniyi, after listening to the estranged couple advised them to reconcile and maintain peace.

    Akinniyi, adjourned the case until April 12 for judgment.
