  • Ibadan residents lament Ayefele’s music house demolition

Residents of Ibadan on Sunday lamented  Sunday’s demolition of the Music House owned by popular musician, Yinka Ayefele, by the Oyo State Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the structure located on the Challenge-Toll Gate dual carriageway in Ibadan houses the popular Fresh FM radio station owned by the musician.

A  NAN correspondent reports that hundreds of residents had thronged the scene wielding placards with various inscriptions criticising the state government over the exercise.

Ayefele,  on his Facebook page after the demolition,  said:  “Oyo State Government did at last…..my pains, my sweat…So help me God.”

Some of the early callers at the scene of the demolished building were Mr Seyi Makinde, a PDP governorship aspirant and  Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Secretary of  Unity Forum, a splinter group in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress.

Also present at the scene was Hon.  Olusegun Olaleye representing Ibadan North State Constituency in the State House of Assembly.

Makinde, Olatunbosun and Olaleye, however, appealed to the irate residents at the scene of the demolished structure to remain calm, urging them not to resort to self-help.

Calls made to the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr  Toye   Arulogun, were unsuccessful as his two cell phone lines were switched off.

NAN recalls that the state government had marked the structure for demolition, insisting that it contravened the state ’s planning laws.

But Ayefele had approached an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan seeking to stop the planned demolition.

Ayefele’s counsel, Mr Olayinka Bolanle, in an exparte motion filed before the court, sought for an order of the court restraining the state government from demolishing the property pending the determination of the suit.

Bolanle also stated that due process was followed in the construction of the structure while relevant approvals were obtained from the state’s departments and agencies associated with land and housing.

Justice I. Yerima ordered the claimant to ensure service of the court process on the respondent and adjourned the case till Monday for the hearing of the exparte motion.

  • Don’t dump PDP, Seyi Makinde tells Ladoja

AS a former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja shops for a new party to join, a co-chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr Seyi Makinde, has urged him to reconsider his decision to dump the party again.

Makinde, who spoke yesterday in Ibadan, the state capital, through his Seyi Makinde Organisation, reminded the former governor of his leadership role and the collective desire of = Oyo State residents for a change through 2019 elections.

The statement by Prince Dotun Oyelade said his advice was that of a son to his father to stay back and continue with the party they both built together.

Ladoja is threatening to leave the PDP because of the harmonised list of the State Executive newly released by the national leadership of the party.

In the list, 14 positions were given to the Makinde bloc while Ladoja’s bloc retained the remaining 16.

The former governor and his supporters are not happy that their hold on the party was halved by the national leadership to promote a sense of belonging.

Ladoja and his supporters have set up a committee to shop for a new party.

Accord Party, where they left for the PDP in 2010, is not an option, it was learnt.

Makinde said: “I am privileged to be referred to as one of your political sons and which you yourself confirmed on a radio programme two days ago. Therefore, as a true son of a valiant father, I hereby humbly but strongly appeal to you not to contemplate leaving the house we are jointly trying to roof, just before the raining season.”

Makinde added that such a decision, coming from a tested leader, would confuse the people as majority of party members and the masses in Oyo State were excited about the prospect of a genuine regime change that will fulfil its electoral promises and respect institutions and elders.

He said: “The issue of harmonisation of party executive, which is being blown out of proportion, appears to be the most realistic arrangement to actualise our objective because political expediency narratives are determined by circumstances on the ground. In our own party, the PDP at the national level learnt a bitter lesson from 2015 debacle, where only one tendency was saddled with the control of the party; hence, it became imperative for the National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure that an all-inclusive State Executive is put in place to avoid going to war with a divided army.

“Like others who desire positive change via PDP under your leadership in the state, I strongly believe no single tendency can do it all alone.

“What does it profit you, sir, to abandon your children and allow, by default, the perpetration of anti-youth employment policy, as graphicised in the current 2018 budget, to continue? God forbid!

“You and I will not allow it, and the millions of youths who are pining away in abject lack, in spite of going to school and who were deceived to being foot soldiers in 2015, will obviously resist it legitimately. And this is why, sir, the prospect of leaving the party is not an option.”

PDP NEC considers report of alleged violations by Fayose

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday received reports detailing alleged violations and acts of impunity by the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.
The senator representing Ekiti South senatorial district, Senator Biodun Olujimi, was said to have tabled the report at the NEC meeting, which also had Fayose in attendance.
Fayose has been at daggers drawn with a number of party stakeholders in Ekiti, including federal lawmakers, state assembly members and party officials at the national level.
The disagreement got to a peak when the governor nominated his deputy, Prof Olusola Eleka as his successor in the governorship election coming up in 2018.
Other intending aspirants, including Olujimi, had protested the governor’s action, describing it as an act of impunity and total disregard for the party’s constitution.
Briefing journalists shortly after the NEC meeting that lasted till 8pm, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the meeting took note of the complaints against the governor and the matter was being looked into.
According to him, the party leadership would take appropriate actions against the governor to avoid what he described as “catastrophic consequences” in the governorship election.
Adeyeye also said that a former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja who recently defected to the PDP from the Accord Party had been granted a waiver.
Also granted waivers was Mr. Seyi Makinde who defected to the PDP from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and several others that joined the party about the same time.
Waivers were also extended to others who recently joined the PDP in Anambra State. All the beneficiaries of the waiver have been accorded the same rights and privileges enjoyed by existing party members.
The party spokesman further stated that the NEC approved the December 9 date for the convention and also approved guidelines for state congresses and the convention as well.
The NEC also approved certain amendments to the party’s constitution that would be ratified at the convention.
  • Oyo 2019: Re-alignment against ruling party will end in futility – APC

Oyo 2019: Re-alignment against ruling party will end in futility – APC

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) Oyo State chapter, says the on-going re-alignment of forces by the opposition political players in the state ahead of the 2019 gubernatorial election would fail.

This was contained in a statement by Mr Olawale Sadare, the party’s Public Relations Officer in Ibadan on Saturday.

The leaderships of opposition political parties in the state, including the Accord Party, Social Democratic Party, Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party have initiated a move to regroup against the ruling APC.

The re-alignment is aimed at dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in the state in the 2019 elections.

Prominent among the state political leaders in the move were former Gov. Rasheed Ladoja, former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mr Seyi Makinde and Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli.

“We are a governing party that has distinguished itself as the only vehicle of good governance, peace and wholesome development desired by the majority of the people of Nigeria, including the good citizens of the state.

“What they are planning is a civilian coup against the electorate but it would not see the light of day for many reasons.

“Most characters involved in the gang-up have had opportunities in the past to impact positively on the lives of the people but they failed as a result of incurable traits of incompetence, selfishness and cluelessness,’’ it said.

The party stated that many of the arrow heads of the alignment are ignorant of how government works from the way they criticize government policies and condemn its projects.

The party stated that Nigerians would not support any alignment, re-alignment or gang-up from the same set of people that plunged the nation into economic mess.

It counselled the sponsors of alignment and those who intend to benefit from it to realize that the effort would end up in futility.

  • Ladoja returns to PDP

    Ladoja returns to PDP

Former Oyo governor Rasheed Ladoja, who defected to the Accord Party to contest the state’s governorship seat in the 2015 general elections, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ladoja, along with Mr Seyi Makinde, a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, moved to the PDP on Thursday in Ibadan, when Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, visited the Oyo capital.

The former governor, who won the seat on the ticket of the PDP in 2011, said that he was returning to his home, adding that it was not his wish to leave the PDP when he did.

“When I left the PDP some years ago, it was because of the injustice done to me.

“We left because the PDP leaders, at that time, were not ready to protect the interest of all members. We are back now because the new leadership has promised to right all wrongs and avoid mistakes of the past.

“I have discussed with members of the Accord party and they have asked for amnesty; we need assurance from Makarfi that Accord Party members will be given equal treatment and a level playing ground,” Ladoja stated

In his response, Makarfi said that he came to Ladoja “to take you back to where you belong”.

“We want you to return to your great beginning; we want to start all over again as one family,” he said.

Makarfi expressed optimism that Ladoja’s presence would add value to the PDP in Oyo State, adding that he (Ladoja) had committed no crime to warrant a plea for amnesty.

He implored PDP members to forget the past and work toward party unity, and assured Ladoja and new PDP members of equal opportunity for all.

Makinde, in his remark, assured Makarfi of his group’s total support to the ideals of the PDP, urging him to protect the interest of his members.

Two PDP chieftains, Chief Richard Akinjide and Chief Yekini Adeojo, who spoke at the occasion, commended Makarfi over his efforts to reconcile warring factions and “especially for wooing new members into the fold”.

Akinjide particularly promised to assist Makarfi toward rebuilding the PDP, and urged him to carry all members along, so as to create a sense of oneness.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that hundreds of Accord party, SDP, and PDP supporters received Makarfi who also visited Chief Christopher Alao-Akala, another former Oyo governor being wooed by Makarfi.

  • What next for Seyi Makinde?

    What next for Seyi Makinde?

Following his dismal performance in the last governorship election in Oyo State, what does the future hold politically for the flag bearer of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the contest, Mr. Seyi Makinde? JEREMIAH OKE looks at the journey so far for the young electrical engineer.

AFTER his failed bid to govern Oyo State, what next for the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during the last general elections, Mr. Seyi Makinde? He finished fifth, behind Governor Abiola Ajimobi, former Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Accord Party, former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of the Labour Party and Senator Teslim Folarin of People Democratic Party (PDP).

In spite of his enthusiasm, this is not the first time the maverick, young electrical engineer would fail to make impact at the polls. He has suffered many political setbacks under the current dispensation. In 2007, he contested the Oyo South Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), but lost the seat to the PDP candidate, Senator Kamorudeen Adedibu. In 2011, Makinde, who had defected to the then ruling party in the state earlier, participated in the primary for the Senate. But, he did not receive the nomination form from his party. In 2014, police raided his offices, which led to the arrest of several members of his campaign team. Makinde decried such arrest and described it as intimidation tactics against his election run. In 2015, he moved to the SDP, following his inability to clinch the governorship ticket of the PDP.

With his passion to help the poor and the needy in society, observers believe Makinde, would have done better politically if he had started from the grassroots. When he entered politics in 2007, he sought to go to the Senate, on the platform of the defunct ANPP. Similarly, he was contested for the senatorial ticket of the PDP in 2011. In spite of his unsuccessful bid for the Senate, he joined the race to govern the state during the last general elections.

From all indications, the accomplished electrical engineer is a political neophyte; considering how politics is practiced in Nigeria, especially in the PDP – the party through which he originally sought to govern the state. He has not been consistent with one political platform. He has also been overly ambitious; if he had started from the House of Representatives, in a bigger political platform, his political career would have blossomed.

A political scientist and Special Assistant to Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Dr. Gbade Ojo, said Makinde can only achieve his dream if he belongs to the right party. He said: “Platform is a big issue in Nigerian politics. Whatever Makinde wants to do, he should start from identifying with a party that has the structure and credibility to win elections. Secondly, he has to remain consistent, by resisting the temptation to jump from one party to the other.

“He has to start now and position himself, because permutation starts in the next one and half years. No matter how good you are, if you belong to the wrong party, you cannot win election in Nigeria. But, even if you don’t have experience in Nigeria and you belong to the right party, you will win election. So, the first hurdle for him is to identify the right party and become an active member. “

Similarly, spokesman of the Labour Party in Oyo, Mr. Oludare Ogunlana, urged Makinde to have a base and be consistent where he belongs. He said: “Makinde is a popular candidate. He has the potentials of even becoming the president of Nigeria. All he needs to do is to have a base and remain consistent. He is a young man and he should be more focused in youth development. Makinde is representing our generation.

“Belonging to a credible political platform is very important for any ambitious politician. So, he should work on his platform. Going by his performance in the last election, Makinde was able to deliver his ward, unlike Folarin who messed up his ticket. If Makinde had accepted his senatorial ticket, he could have won and that would have prepared him for his governorship ambition. Makinde is young, exposed, and vibrant. If he could move to a credible party; he is a future governor.

“Makinde should also mend fences with some of his senior political colleagues. If you want to win election in Ogbomoso, for instance, you must not fight with somebody like the former governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala.”

A senior lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, who pleaded for anonymity said out of the five factors that contribute to electoral victory, as far as the governorship election is concerned, Makinde has four in his disposal. He therefore urged him to work on the remaining one. The journalism teacher and political analyst argued that if Makinde returns to the PDP, he cannot achieve his dream of becoming governor in the nearest future.

According to him, the first factor is that the candidate must be widely accepted in his constituency and the state at large. Other factors are; platform (party) which he lacks, security agencies, electoral body, and financial ability to run campaign. He said if Makinde could run for the governorship on the platform of a credible party, he has the potentials of winning.

His words: “It is obvious that any credible party who presents Makinde as its flag bearer in 2019 will have it smooth. He is a good product, going by his antecedents. He has all it takes to become a winner.”

Makinde ran a peaceful and issue-based campaign prior to the last general elections. At a point, his campaign train met with that of one of his opponents in Oke-Ogun area. The electrical engineer cum politician merely stopped his convey to demonstrate his political maturity. In fact, he doled out cash to the political disciples and supporters of his opponent.

Besides, he has no political baggage in Oyo politics. He is loved by both the young and the old, for his generosity and his political diplomacy.

During the campaigns for last election, Makinde attended all the governorship debates. In almost all the debates, he did not engage in character assassination; he talked about what he has going for him and what he intends to do for the people. At one of such debates held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, he said: “I have empowered many people in my own capacity as individual and I think I can do more if they allow me.”

Observers say he is a successful businessman and a public-spirited individual.  Makinde has this to say about his involvement in politics: “I’m looking for a new and challenging call to publicly serve and give back to the society that shaped me; one that will allow me to make the best use of my existing skills and wealth of experience in managing people and executing projects that would be to the best of the people”.

Though, Makinde is yet to hold any political office, he has proved that one doesn’t need to hold political offices to show concern about the less privileged. He has touched the lives of people in diverse ways. He constructed a block of three-classrooms for his alma mater, Bishop Philip’s Academy, Ibadan, which was equipped with information and communication technology gadgets such as computers and a five KVA generating set to power them.

Makinde also doled out scholarships to outstanding students from Bishop Philip’s Academy and committed a lot of money to the empowerment of less privileged youths and elderly people in the society. He sank boreholes at various communities in Oyo State. He procured medical equipment and dispensing of medication to the aged. He sponsored a medical team from the United States of America to help the people overcome their health challenges. He constructed gas-powered turbine to generate electricity for the people of Ajia town in Ibadan. It was inaugurated on September 17, 2011.

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has promised to bring government closer to the grassroots, if elected on Aprill 11.

He made the pledge while addressing residents of various communities in Ido Local Government.

The communities include Apete, Awotan, Akufo, Erin-koja-obe, Ido and Omi-Adio.

Makinde also pledged to organize local government election within six months of his administration as a step towards achieving his plan.

The residents, who trooped out in large number to welcome the governorship hopeful, expressed their support for his ambition.

Some of the community leaders and market women said Makinde has demonstrated his love, kindness and human feeling to them, pointing out that he is fit to lead the state.

A market woman, Alhaja Ajoke Ibirogba, said: “We are only sure that, with him as the next occupier of Agodi Government House, a new lease of life will be our portion. For somebody to be so caring, using his personal money to address the welfare needs of the people the way he has been doing, his government will be very soothing.”

Makinde also assured the people that the land resource with which the council is endowed would become a great asset because of the agriculture programme of his administration.

“You can all be rest assured of life in abundance by the grace of God, “ he said.

The SDP governorship candidate urged the residents to use opportunity if the remaining days to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to enable them choose the right leaders at the polls.

  • Court to hear Makinde’s candidacy suit Mar 9

Court to hear Makinde’s candidacy suit Mar 9

A Federal High Court in Ibadan has adjourned till March 9 to hear a case challenging the candidacy of Seyi Makinde as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State.

The suit was filed by Olugbenga Bayode and Rasaq Adegboyega, who claimed to be SDP members.

In the suit by their counsel, Adenle Adeloye, the plaintiffs alleged that Makinde was not the “proper” candidate to represent the SDP in the election because he was not part of the primary conducted last December 6.

They further claimed that Aworinde Oluwafemi Samson emerged as the governorship candidate in the December 6 primary.

At the proceedings yesterday, Makinde’s counsel Yaqub Fadare told the court that the defence had filed necessary documents asking the court to dismiss the suit.

SDP’s counsel Idowu Oyeleke urged the court to strike out the case, saying the party’s defence team had filed notice of preliminary objection, written address, statement of defence and other necessary documents.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) counsel, Omoniyi Fayanju, told the court that the screening of all the candidates were done at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, saying he would connect with the Legal Department at the headquarters to obtain necessary documents.

  • ‘Makinde isn’t SDP candidate’

    ‘Makinde isn’t SDP candidate’

The Federal High Court in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday began hearing a case challenging the candidature of a business mogul, Seyi Makinde, as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State.

The suit was filed by Olugbenga Bayode and Rasaq Adegboyega, who introduced themselves as SDP members.

They alleged that Makinde was not the “proper” candidate to represent the SDP in the election.

The plaintiffs sought an injunction to restrain Makinde from parading himself or taking any step as the SDP governorship candidate.

They are also seeking an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise, accept or treat Makinde as the SDP candidate.

The plaintiffs said the party held its primaries last December 6, adding that at the end of the exercise, Aworinde Oluwafemi Samson emerged as the governorship candidate.

According to them, the list of candidates was forwarded to INEC on December 10 and the electoral umpire acknowledged the receipt of the list the following day.

Makinde was reportedly declared as the governorship candidate on December 15.

“By provision of the Electoral Act 2010 sections 35 and 33, a candidate whose name is filed with INEC is expected to withdraw for another candidate by filling Form CF004.

“Aworinde and the first defendant (Makinde) did not complete or file Form CF004.

“By the list submitted on December 10 to the third defendant (INEC),  Aworinde is the governorship candidate of the second defendant (SDP),” the plaintiffs said.

No date has been fixed for the hearing.

  • I’ll care for teachers, says SDP candidate

I’ll care for teachers, says SDP candidate

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has promised to alleviate the “suffering” of primary school teachers and train them to improve their productivity, if elected.

Makinde made the promise at an interactive session with teachers in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said most teachers age fast and lack constant in-training to make them better at their jobs.

The SDP candidate said: “The best teacher is one with the basic tools to do the job; hence our desire to provide our schools with the necessary tools, if we have the opportunity to rule the state.”

The leaders of the teachers, Oyedele Adelaja, said teaching, which is the mother of all professions, has remained the most neglected and the least catered for by successive governments.

The gathering was attended by the teacher who taught Makinde in Primary Six, Pa Onaolapo Fantola, who was also a pupil under Makinde’s late father.
