  • Man, 20, in court for stealing car parts worth N600, 000

    A 20-year-old man, Mohammed Sanusi, who allegedly stole car parts, on Friday appeared in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Sanusi, of no fixed address, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 18, at 6.00 a.m., at African Road, Iponri, Lagos.

    Osayande said the accused stole one kick starter, alternator, gear knob, selector, dash board and fuel tank valued at N600, 000.

    She said the parts were stolen inside a parked truck where they were kept.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

    Adelaja said the surety must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until Sept. 3, for further hearing.

    Teenager gets N200,000 bail over alleged defilement of girl

    A Teenager, Daniel Osikemuwe,who allegedly defiled a five-year-old girl, was on Wednesday granted reprieve by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    He was released on a N200,000 bail.

    Osikemuwe, 16, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge bordering on defilement.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the offence was committed on June 23, at No. 13, George Close, Jibowu Road, U-turn, Abule Egba area of Lagos.‎

    ‎She alleged that the accused, who was a neighbour to the parents of the girl, lured the girl to his room and defiled her.‎

    The offence contravened Sections 137 and 407 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    ‎The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ipaye-Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the second surety should be a cleric or a community leader.‎

    She also directed the sureties to provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The magistrate ordered that two passport photographs of the accused be deposited with the court registrar, and be remanded at Correctional Institute for boys in Abeokuta.

    ‎She adjourned the case till Oct. 16, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.

    Man in court for assaulting wife, granted bail

    A Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos on Monday granted N200,000 bail to 38-year-old unemployed man, Arinze Ebosie, who allegedly assaulted his wife, Victoria Nwokoro.

    The Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, who gave the ruling, asked Ebosie to provide two sureties in like sum as part of the bail condition.

    He said one of the sureties must be an employee in the public or private sector, while the other must be a cleric or a community leader.

    Lambo said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned mention until April 24.

    The defendant, of no fixed address, is facing one-count charge of assault.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 17 at No.11, Ladega Street, Surulere, Lagos.

    Osayande said that Ebosie, who was separated from his wife for a while now, found out where she was currently living and he went to the house and beat her up.

    She said “Victoria was rushed to the hospital by a neighbour, who consequently reported the matter to police.”

    She added that the offence contravened Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

  • 2 men docked over alleged rape of 2 school girls

    Two men — Isiaka Jimoh and Dauda Hassan — who allegedly gang-raped two secondary school students of ages 12 and 13 with others still at large, were was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    ‎Jimoh,18, and Hassan, 21, whose addresses were not provided, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge
    bordering on conspiracy and defilement.

    ‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused with others now at large committed
    the offences on Jan. 29 at Pipeline, Aboru in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State at about 11.30 p.m.‎

    She alleged that the accused had gang raped the girls who were on an errand.

    “It was an onlooker who notified the police and the men were immediately arrested.

    “Jimoh and another defiled the 12-year-old girl, while Hassan and one at large raped the 14-year-old‎ girl,” she said.‎

    The offences contravened Sections 137 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    Chief Magistrate A. Ipaye Nwachukwu granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two
    sureties each in like sum.

    She said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the second surety should
    be a community leader.

    The sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government and their addresses should
    be verified by the court, she added.

    The magistrate adjourned the case to April 4

    Two workers docked over theft of N2.5m school fees

    A Surulere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Tuesday granted one million Naira bail to two workers, who allegedly absconded with school fees totalling N2,490,000.

    Ekechukwu Sunday, 32; Olanrewaju Toheeb, 28 – both male – are facing an eight – count charge bordering on stealing, causing a riot, fraud and forgery.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, also ordered that the accused must provide two sureties in like sum.

    Ipaye said that the sureties must produce evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government, while their addresses should be verified.‎

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences at Orile Iganmu area of Lagos at about 10.00a.m on Oct. 26.

    Osayande said that the two men refused to remit to the school, tuition fees collected from pupils, thereby defrauding their employer, Mrs Chika Okudo.

    She said that the accused suddenly stopped coming to school, established their own school, re-appeared in the school, assembled the pupils, and told them that they had established a better school.

    The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 409,166 (1)(d), 285, 44, 45, 363 and 323 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The court adjourned the case till Dec. 20 for mention.

    Court grants usher N1m bail for defiling girl, 6, in church

    A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Thursday slammed a one million naira bail on a 33-year-old man, Roland Olise, for alleged defilement of a six-year-old girl in a church in Lagos.

    Olise, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of defilement.

    The Chief Magistrate, Ipaye Nwachukwu, ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.

    Nwachukwu said one of the surety must be a property owner in Lagos State, while the other must be a civil servant on grade level 14.

    She said the sureties must provide evidence of tax payments to the government, and adjourned the case till Jan. 19, 2017 for mention.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at a church at Ajah-Lekki Area in Lagos at about 6.00 p.m on October 21.

    Osayande said the accused, who was a church worker, was in church and he saw the six-year-old girl passing and he called her into the church where there wasn’t any body around and defiled her.

    She said that the girl knew the man as the church was their family church and that was why she comfortably entered the church with him.‎

    The offence contravened Sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
