    • Embattled deputy governor alleges assassination attempt

Edo State’s reinstated Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu yesterday made a three-minute broadcast from his private residence at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin, the state capital.

He spoke on his inability to access his office, being occupied by a newly appointed Deputy Governor Godwins Omobayo.

In the broadcast via a viral video, Shaibu said: “My good people of Edo State and fellow Nigerians, today (August 12), I come before you to reiterate my dedication to serving the wonderful people of this state. My reinstatement as the deputy governor of Edo State is a testament to the divine grace of God Almighty and the steadfast prayers of all Nigerians for which I am truly grateful.

“In recent weeks (on July 17, 2024), the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja (presided over by Justice James Omotosho), reinstated me as the deputy governor of Edo State, acknowledging the illegality of the impeachment (of April 8, 2024).

“Upon my arrival in Benin City (on July 18, 2024), a tragic event occurred, as an assassination attempt was made on my life. Thankfully, the bullet missed its mark. Unfortunately, it hit an armed policeman (Inspector Onuh Akoh of 45 Police Mobile Force, Abuja), who was assigned to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 21, 2024 election in Edo State (a moment of silence was observed to remember the fallen officer).

“I have been informed that many suspects have been apprehended, some of whom have provided crucial confessional statements.”

Shaibu, who returned to the main opposition APC, also relived his unpleasant experiences since his reinstatement, especially the refusal to cooperate with him by Obaseki of the governing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

He said: “Following my return to office, I have formally requested the governor’s approval of the reinstatement of my aides. However, I am yet to receive a response from him.

“Also, I recently communicated with the governor about my trip to United States of America to participate in the Afemai World Congress (of indigenes of Edo North Senatorial District and their friends), and to visit our athletes that were competing in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

“Today (August 12), I am issuing a clear directive to all staff within the deputy governor’s office, who have not yet returned to work, to resume forthwith. Failure to comply will result in appropriate sanctions.

“In line with the judgment (of FHC, Abuja), the office of the deputy governor was never vacant. In this regard, all transactions that would have been done in my absence remain illegal, null, void, and of no effect whatsoever. I want to make it known that any bank conducting business with the office of the deputy governor of Edo State without my explicit approval does so at its own risk.

“Nevertheless, I want to reassure my dear people of Edo State that I am back in my role as the deputy governor of Edo State, ready to perform my duties, fulfil my responsibilities, and deliver on the promises of democracy.”

But Communication and Orientation Commissioner Chris Nehikhare described Shaibu as an impersonator who should be disregarded.

He said: “…The issue of his (Shaibu’s) purported reinstatement is still active in court, and the next hearing for the two separate motions filed by the state government and the Edo House of Assembly, challenging the purported reinstatement by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court is fixed for September 24, 2024.

“The state, through the Attorney-General of Edo State, and the Edo House of Assembly by their lawyers, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), and Ken Mozia (SAN), respectively, had in the motions sought an order for a stay of the execution of the purported reinstatement and an order suspending the judgment and restraining Shaibu from parading himself or attending any official function as deputy governor, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

“Therefore, the status quo is that His Excellency, Omobayo Marvelous Godwins, remains the deputy governor of Edo State, and any correspondence carried out by any other person, including Philip Shaibu, is an act of impersonation, and anyone who deals with him does so at his or her own risk.”

    …urges public to disregard him

The Edo state government has said that Philip Shaibu is impersonating the state’s deputy governor, urging the public to disregard him.

The Nation had reported that Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor of the state, had announced his resumption of duty and directed his staff to do so.

However, the Edo state government in a statement by its commissioner for communication and orientation, Osa Nehikhare said Shaibu’s action is a “clear case of impersonation.”

He said: “It has come to the attention of the Edo State Government that the former deputy governor, Comr. Philip Shaibu has been carrying out correspondence with different institutions and organisations both within and outside the State in a clear case of impersonation.

“In the interest of the safety of these organizations, we want to restate that Shaibu is not the Deputy Governor of Edo State, and every correspondence from him in that regard should be disregarded and considered a forgery.

Shaibu resumes office as Edo deputy gov, warns staff

The reinstated deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, has resumed office and has directed his staff to follow suit.

Shaibu, who announced his resumption via a video on X, directed all his staff to do the same by resuming their duties from the office of the deputy governor.

He wrote: “In adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, I announce my official resumption to the office. God Bless Edo State, God Bless Nigeria.”

The Edo State House of Assembly had impeached Shaibu following his face-off with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

But, the Appeal Court in Abuja had reinstated him despite the stance of the Edo State government.

On resumption on Monday, August 12, he warned that staff who failed to resume office would face the consequences of their action.

According to him, the judgement of the Federal High Court which reinstated him indicated that his office has never been vacant.

He also disclosed that he was saddened by the killing of a police officer attached to the Edo APC governorship candidate for the September 21 election.

He warned banks against conducting transactions with his office without his explicit approval, citing illegality.

He also revealed that he has requested the state governor’s approval to reinstate his aides but is still awaiting a response.

    Shaibu: I’ve forgiven Obaseki

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has said he has forgiven Governor Godwin Obaseki for treating him like an outcast, in spite of his sacrifice and loyalty to the governor.

He said this while addressing reporters after visiting the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

Asked if he could ever forgive Obaseki, the deputy governor said: “You know human beings have different ways of behaving and the only perfect person is the Almighty God. Every other person who is created by God, none of us is perfect. But at the same time, God gave us a commandment like every other country’s constitution. One of the greatest commandments in the world is to love your neighbour as yourself. And if all of us can take to that commandment, there will be peace in the world.”

Edo 2024: I have forgiven Obaseki – Shaibu

…I only have one ‘official’ car, not 22

The newly reinstated deputy governor of Edo state, Hon. Philip Shaibu, has announced that he has forgiven Governor Godwin Obaseki for marginalising him despite his sacrifices and loyalty.

Shaibu made this statement while speaking to the press after meeting with Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), at the party headquarters in Abuja.

And if all of us can take to that commandment, there will be peace in the whole world. Because what you cannot do to yourself you will not want to do it to others.

“I used to use the word perfect relationship. But I have just discovered that there is no perfect relationship with what has happened between the governor and I.

“From my own end, I gave everything. I gave all to have him succeed because, for me, it is about the state and the state in everything. So, I gave all, up my earnings. Even to my official earnings. I forfeited lots of my official entitlements. Why? Because I didn’t want any trouble or disagreement. And the easiest way you can have disagreements could be money. Even my official entitlement, most of them I didn’t apply for.

“As small as 28 days, that is the first earning that you earn whether as a civil servant or in government, the first and second terms I didn’t have it. That is, anything that has to do with going to meet the governor, to apply for anything even personal entitlements or official entitlements, I didn’t. I confined myself to the official salary that came to me.”

Shuaibu, who returned to APC last Saturday, also faulted the state government for asking him to return the 22 official vehicles in his care. He insisted that all but one Jeep the governor bought for him in the third year of their administration belongs to him.

He said: “Recently, I saw an advert that I should return 22 vehicles. Only one vehicle in the seven and half years that the governor bought for my convoy. Only one. Every vehicle you see in my convoy, some of them, especially the Land Cruiser I used for three years with the Coat of Arms and flag as a staff car. The Prado that I used as a backup for three years was the Prado that I used as the majority leader of the Edo State House of Assembly. The Hilux that I was using in the state assembly and the one I bought when I came to the House of Representatives.

“It was the third year of his first term that the governor eventually bought a Land Cruiser jeep. And even when they were bringing the jeep it had an accident on the way. We had to change wheels and it took two weeks for us to fix it. A new car that they were bringing to me. It took two weeks for us to fix it. And you know the convoy of a deputy governor. I never made it an issue because for me, anything that will bring trouble I was able to manage it.”

The deputy governor then harped on the need to strengthen internal party democracy to stabilise the country’s fledgling democracy.

He identified the lack of internal party democracy as the major cause of leadership crisis among politicians who always want their interests to override the wishes of the majority.

On the forthcoming Edo State governorship election, Shuaibu said the contest is for the APC candidate to win.

“The chances of APC is getting brighter and better every day. Because we are the APC that left APC to join the PDP to win in 2020. This time, we again that were the major factor that left, APC including the then state executive of APC, Local government, and ward executives moved. I can authoritatively tell you now, that the same state executives of APC that moved are back to APC.

“It is not just about Philip Shaibu. Anslem Ojezua and others are not all happy. The Deputy state chairman of APC then, Kenneth Asekhome. They are all back. We are back. And the election is about numbers. And if the game is about numbers, APC’s numbers are increasing. PDP’s numbers are depreciating. So obviously who will win the election are those whose numbers have appreciated not those who are declining?

“I can tell you that PDP is gone in Edo State. Even those who are still in PDP like Chief Dan Orbih, affirmed that what is right must be done. Chief Dan Orbih is still in PDP.  But he is not with them as far as this issue is concerned. Because he is standing for what is right.”

Edo 2024: PDP expresses anger over Shaibu’s return to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep anger and disappointment over the return of the reinstated Edo state deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Sunday evening, PDP’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed the party’s resolve to undermine Shuaibu’s political influence.

The decision comes in response to Shuaibu’s defection, which the PDP views as bolstering the APC’s position as a significant threat instead of supporting their own governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lampoons Comrade Philip Shaibu on his discreditable return to the losing, insensitive and anti-people All Progressives Congress (APC) after failing in the well-oiled plot to sabotage the will of the people of Edo State as embodied in the PDP candidacy of Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

“With his return to the APC, Comrade Shaibu has irredeemably sunk deeper into the abyss of rejection; having at last shown his true colours as belonging to the corrupt, malevolent and oppressive political platform that relishes in violence, subverting the Will of the people and inflicting pains on Nigerians.

“By confessing that his heart has always been in, and returning to the rejected APC, which is imperilled by an unqualified candidate; Comrade Shaibu only validates the widespread opinion that he was not in the governorship race to serve the interest and wellbeing of the people of Edo State.

“Nigerians now know why Comrade Shaibu had no tangible campaign manifesto, programme or plan for Edo State but only engaged in actions and utterances aimed to derail the PDP governorship nomination processes and frustrate the Will of the majority of the people of Edo State.

“Our Party has only but pity for Comrade Shaibu for apparently being used and dumped and now on a journey to nowhere as he is currently facing a stiff rejection in the APC”, Ologunagba stated.

Playing up unverified assertions that Conrade Philip Shaibu and APC have been completely rejected by APC stakeholders from his Etsako West Local Government Area, Ologunagba further expressed confidence that the PDP candidate is set to win the forthcoming Edo state governorship election.

Ologunagba went further: “It is therefore not surprising that within 24 hours of Comrade Shaibu’s return to the APC, the PDP Governorship campaign has swelled as more citizens of Edo State, who do not want to be in the same political platform with Comrade Shaibu are now massively declaring support for the PDP and our candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

“The PDP welcomes democratically-minded and well-meaning members of the APC and other political parties who in their droves are now pitching tents with the PDP and Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

“It is clear that Dr. Asue Ighodalo is the only candidate campaigning with well-thought-out and people-oriented programes and who has the capacity, competence, experience and public acceptability to drive the desire of the people of Edo State for sustained development on the platform of the PDP.

“The PDP charges the people of Edo State to remain focused in their overwhelming support for the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo in the September 21, 2024 governorship election in the State,” he stated.

Shaibu: My legal battles will restore sanity to deputy governor’s office ridiculed since 1999

The reinstated Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has accused Nigerian governors of ridiculing the office of the deputy governor since the return of democracy in 1999.

He stated that his legal battles aim to restore sanity and put an end to this ridicule, ensuring deputy governors are not seen as mere spare tyres and are treated with the respect due to the joint ticket.

Shaibu made the remarks to reporters yesterday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin, after a special Thanksgiving service with his family.

The service was in gratitude for God’s protection, provision, and grace, culminating in his victory at the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja last Wednesday, which led to his return to office four months after his impeachment by the Edo House of Assembly.

A staunch Catholic, Shaibu called on the National Assembly to enact laws that would protect the office of the deputy governor.

The former House of Representatives member, ex-Majority Leader of the Edo House of Assembly, and former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) described his reinstatement as an act of God.

Shaibu also called for a thorough investigation into the killing of police Inspector Onuh Akoh of No. 45 Police Mobile Force, Abuja, who was attached to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming September 21 election in Edo, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District.

Edo deputy governor said: “My fight to be reinstated is for all the people occupying the office in the country. The office has been ridiculed since the return of democracy in 1999 in Nigeria.

“I will continue to fight to make sure that sanity and respect are brought back to the office of deputy governor. All this I am doing is not to earn anything, but to make sure that the sanity of the office of the deputy governor is restored, in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“What other deputy governors cannot fight against, I will fight on their behalf. So that governors will start respecting the office.”

Shaibu also stated that his victory at FHC, Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, was made possible by God.

He said: “I challenged God, and I told Him that I wanted Him to prove His power in my life, that people that were anti-God and anti-democracy were at it again, and they wanted to use me as a scapegoat. I told God to show to the world that I am truly His son.

“They said they would impeach me, and I would go to court, and that by the time judgment would be delivered, my tenure would have been over. I then challenged God to prove to them that they touched His anointed and that the judgment would come faster, and more than expected. I said I would need the judgment to come before the September 21, 2024 election in Edo State.

“By the grace of God, democracy has come to stay, and we who fought for democracy will protect it. Anti-democratic forces must be flushed out, and we will succeed.”

Edo deputy governor also admonished the teeming youths of the Southsouth state not to allow themselves to be used but must vote on September 21 this year in Edo, and protect their votes, to remove the anti-democratic people.

He said: “This election is the time to change anti-democratic forces and you must do it through the ballot.

“Do not engage in violence. I have been preaching this since my intimidation and harassment started, and God is giving me victories.”

Shaibu also revealed that Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki, vowed to destroy him, for refusing to support his anointed governorship candidate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Asue Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer.

He said: “Governor Obaseki stated that he would destroy me. That is why I decided that the office of the deputy governor of Edo State, I will fight to make sure that sanity and respect are brought back to the office.

“I refused to pull anybody to the streets because they were saying ‘we know him, he will soon pull people to the streets.’ They know what they have done, and they are trying to cover up, but this one, they cannot cover it up, not when a police officer is a victim. They cannot cover this, all of them must be picked.

“They orchestrated it (the killing of Inspector Akoh). The men of the Edo vigilance service did it. The vigilance man in Edo State killed the policeman. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, must look into the killing of the police Inspector.

“They are struggling to see how they can rope people in. They cannot rope anybody in. I am urging President Bola Tinubu resident and the IGP to set up a panel of enquiry to investigate the killing of Inspector Akoh, not only the killing but to also proscribe the Edo vigilance service.”

The reinstated Edo deputy governor, who on Saturday in Benin, returned to the main opposition APC in the state, from the governing PDP, gave an assurance that Okpebholo would succeed Obaseki on November 12 this year, to ensure good governance and move Edo forward.

Reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who joined Governor Godwin Obaseki on June 19, 2020 to defect from the then governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, yesterday knelt down and begged a former National Chairman of APC, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, as he (Shaibu) returned to the APC.

The return of Shaibu to APC took place in Benin at the inauguration of the party’s National Campaign Council for the September 21, 2024 governorship election headed by the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu.

The reinstated Edo deputy governor, who defected to APC along with prominent PDP members and their teeming supporters, said: “I am back to add value to the APC. On behalf of the Legacy Group, I announce our movement to the APC.

“It is time to take back our state. We will not talk too much, because action will speak for us. We are not afraid, we are ready to move forward.

“We, the homeboys, are ready to take our state back, through the APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa. We are not troublemakers, but if it comes, we will use it to rub our body and move on.”

APC’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje, who received Shaibu and other defectors, stated that with the former member of the House of Representatives (Shaibu) being a serving deputy governor, the APC already had 50 per cent of Edo’s votes.

He assured that APC’s grand rally in Benin would soon be attended by President Bola Tinubu, and that Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, and Idahosa, who represents Ovia constituency in the House of Representatives, would not be governing Edo with Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) as Obaseki of PDP, but with concrete plans to develop the state, connect it to the centre, and move Edo forward.

The national chairman of APC described Okpebholo as a developer, who knew the meaning of development and good governance, and Idahosa was referred to as projects’ man, while urging Edo electorate to massively vote for them.

Ganduje hailed Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, on the maintenance of peace in Benin Kingdom, while giving an assurance that APC government, from November 12 this year, would respect the traditional institution.

Oshiomhole, a former Edo governor, who represents Edo North senatorial district, called for the disbandment of Edo State Security Network (ESSN), and asked the state’s Commissioner of Police, Funso Adegboye, to unmask the killers of police Inspector Onuh Akoh on Thursday, during an attack on the convoy of Shaibu and Okpebholo on Airport Road, Benin.

The former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), also accused Obaseki of underdeveloping Edo, and unable to build on his noteworthy legacies in all sectors.

Okpebholo, while also speaking, expressed optimism of emerging victorious on September 21, through the help of God and support of Edo electorate, while promising to unite Edo residents and ensure good governance.

However, the Deputy Governor, who returned to the APC in Benin, the state capital, on Saturday, with pominent members of the Dan Orbih-led Legacy Group of the PDP, said he was back to add value to the party.

He said: “On behalf of the Legacy Group, I announce our movement to the APC. We have come to add value to the party.

“It is time to take back our state. We will not talk too much because action will speak for us. We are not afraid. We are ready to move forward.

PDP, APC leaders in Edo fight over Shaibu, Okpebholo’s attack, killing of police inspector

…as Edo CP vows to arrest, name, and bring to book perpetrators of the dastardly act

The leaders of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state on Friday, July 19, engaged in verbal war over Thursday’s attack on the reinstated Edo deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, and the APC’s governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, for the September 21 election.

The incident happened on Thursday, July 18, on Airport Road, Benin, the capital of Edo state.

The Edo commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, who was present at Benin airport during the violent episode where political thugs opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of police Inspector Onuh Akoh from No. 45 Police Mobile Force in Abuja, attached to Okpebholo, pledged to arrest, name, shame, and prosecute those responsible for the cowardly act.

The Edo APC, represented by Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo, Director of Publicity of its Governorship Campaign Council, called for an investigation into the serious security breach that led to the attempted assassination of Okpebholo on Thursday, leaving him hospitalised in Benin due to gunshot wounds.

He said: “On July 18, 2024, our candidate for the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, escaped an assassination attempt when he arrived at the Benin Airport to continue his campaigns. Sadly, the assassins succeeded in gruesomely taking the life of Police Inspector Onuh Akoh, one of his security details.

“Senator Okpebholo’s peaceful procession from Benin Airport to the APC’s state secretariat would have been conducted peacefully, without any problem, if the gunmen had not decided to ambush the candidate and his supporters at the Benin Airport exit.

“Let it be known that our candidate did not commit any crime by passing through the airport gate, after arriving from Abuja. Members of the APC, who received him on his arrival, never committed any crime.

“Those that committed the murder of Inspector Akoh and attempted to assassinate Senator Okpebholo are the hired criminals, who were identified by security agents present at the scene, as representatives of the opposition party.

“The unprovoked horrific act of political violence against a peaceful Nigerian Senator should have no place in Edo State. It should be unanimously and forcefully condemned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the good people of Edo State.”

After a careful reflection, the Edo APC’s chieftain also expressed regret over the killing of the serving police officer, who was murdered in cold blood, while carrying out his official assignment.

He said: “The party is appalled by the pains caused by injuries sustained by hundreds of our (APC’s) members during the unexpected attack. We are grateful that Senator Okpebholo appears to be fine, after the despicable attack on a peaceful motorcade.

“The attempted assassination of Senator Okpebholo represents a glaring failure by the police, which left a serving senator exposed to gunfire, in a breach of security that caused a fatality.

“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, and the Department of State Services (DSS), to probe the assassination attempt on Senator Okpebholo, bring the culprits to book, and rein in the state-sponsored criminals, who have brazenly made the political landscape of Edo State unsafe.

“Anything short of this, is capable of encouraging self-help in the state, especially as we enter the crucial campaign season.

“The vantage point the assassins, who were in a marked Sienna Bus opposite the exit gate of Benin Airport, managed to acquire, is the greatest security breach and failure, especially as the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, and other top police officers were at the airport to ensure peace.”

Omo-Ojo also declared that no amount of violent desperation would prevent the APC from providing leadership for the determined, concerted and patriotic forces, who he said were working to take back Edo and reset the state on the path of peace and prosperity from November 12 this year, when Governor Godwin Obaseki’s second term would expire.

Meanwhile, the state chairman of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who addressed reporters at the state secretariat of the party on Airport Road, Benin, expressed shock over the wanton destruction of property and the death of the police officer, as a result of the violence, allegedly orchestrated by thugs of the APC, under the guise of enforcing Wednesday’s judgment of the Federal High Court (FHC) Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, which reinstated Shuaibu.

Aziegbemi, who was accompanied by the Director-General of the Asue Ighodalo governorship campaign management council, Matthew Iduoriyekewen, a former Majority Leader of Edo House of Assembly, and other PDP chieftains, stated that the state’s PDP was worried about the alleged desperation of the leaders of APC and the party’s governorship candidate (Okpebholo) to cause confusion and chaos in Edo since they were obviously not ready for the coming governorship election in the state.

He said: “The incident that happened yesterday (on Thursday) at the Benin Airport was unfortunate and unacceptable. It shows how desperate the APC handlers have become in their bid to foist their candidate on Edo people. It is quite disheartening and really saddening that an innocent police officer lost his life, due to the violence unleashed on innocent citizens by the APC, led by its governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

“The PDP expresses deep sorrow over the death of the gallant officer. We commiserate with the family of the deceased and pray that our good Lord grants him eternal rest.

“It is common knowledge that when a court of first instance gives a judgment, once there is a notice of appeal and an appeal for a stay of execution, the parties are expected to maintain the status quo. We advise the impeached deputy governor of Edo State to allow the law to take its full course and stop instigating violence in Edo State. He should await the outcome of the judgments of the Appeal Court and ultimately the Supreme Court.

“The APC is advised to rein in their members, as no responsible government will fold its arms and watch hoodlums harass, maim and kill its citizens. I advise the APC to prepare for the governorship election, instead of engaging in unnecessary distractions.”

Edo chairman of PDP also stated that the state’s commissioner of police was on Thursday at Benin airport, where he showed Shaibu a copy of the notice of appeal and stay of execution of the judgment filed by the respondents.

He said: “We gave the police intelligence, that many of the cars waiting for the governorship candidate of the APC in Edo and Shaibu at Benin Airport, were stocked with guns and dangerous weapons. Why was the Edo police commissioner’s order flouted, and he (Adegboye) did not act to stop the violence thereafter?

“In all, human beings will always protect their self-interest. In whose interest is it to cause any mayhem in Edo, a few months to an election that the PDP is 100 per cent sure of winning? PDP cannot work against its interest. It is therefore opined that the APC, with its new convert, Shaibu, planned, executed (as always badly executed) plan to cause maximum fear in our people, before the election.”

Aziegbemi called on the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident, carry out an autopsy on the killed police officer, and make its findings public.

Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, while also addressing a news conference yesterday in his office at the state secretariat in Benin, claimed that the filing of a stay of execution in response to a court order or judgment meant that the status quo should be maintained by all parties, contrary to the landmark judgments of the Supreme Court on the sensitive matter.

Nehikhare, who was accompanied by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media Projects, Pastor Crusoe Osagie, claimed that Shaibu remained impeached as Edo deputy governor until the appellate court decided otherwise.

He said: “The enforcement of a court judgment is neither carried out by the parties involved nor their hirelings but by law enforcement agents.

“In a blatant disregard for the stay of execution, as well as law and order, Shaibu mobilised thugs, armed with sophisticated weapons, within and outside Benin Airport compound, in a bid to make a show of his return to Benin, following the court judgment, unleashing mayhem on the people and stirring crisis in the state, in the guise of executing the court judgment.

“Edo Commissioner of Police, with the intelligence available to him, rushed to Benin Airport, approached Shaibu, and informed him of the filed stay of execution, which he had in his possession, warning the former deputy governor against marching to the Edo State Government House, which was Shaibu’s original plan.

“With the disappointment by this development, Shaibu disregarded the advice and warnings from Edo Commissioner of Police and exited the airport precincts, into the waiting crowd of thugs, who then moved with him into the city, shooting sporadically and unleashing mayhem on innocent citizens, who were minding their lawful businesses.

“The mindless shooting and breakdown of law and order resulted in the wanton destruction of property, infliction of various degrees of injuries on passers-by and security operatives, and the loss of the life of a policeman.”

Edo commissioner for communication and orientation, also described the incident as condemnable and unacceptable.

He said: “Edo State government condoles with the Nigerian Police Force and the family of the police officer, who tragically lost his life in the incident. It is quite disappointing, but not surprising, that the Edo Commissioner of Police, despite his intervention, could not rein in Shaibu and his thugs, leading to the unnecessary loss of life.

“We know that the game plan of Shaibu and his ilk was to cause as much destruction, mayhem, and chaos within the Benin metropolis, with the aim of creating a sense of unrest and crisis, so that they could cry and plead with the Federal Government as victims, expecting it to, in response, begin the arrest of members of the PDP in Edo State, including myself, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation.

“The Federal Government or federal might is the only campaign strategy Edo APC leaders boastfully articulate whenever they talk of the September 21, 2024 governorship election. This episode is just one of the scenes in their how-to capture Edo script.

“Edo State government is calling on the Federal Government and the IGP to immediately begin investigations to unravel the root cause of the breach of law and order in the state, as well as the death of the gallant police officer, whose duty it was to protect the APC’s governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and ensure that the culprits are prosecuted.

“Edo state government will not sit idly and watch just one person or a group of persons bring down the roof on the entire state, on the back of his or their selfish motivations, and in gross violation of the laws of the land.”

Nehikhare also urged Edo residents to be assured that the Obaseki’s administration would spare no resource in ensuring the protection of their lives and property, as required by law.
