  • SHAN GEORGE: I wanted to be a lawyer to jail corrupt people

Recently out with a new movie, ‘Grey shadows’, which tackles how ill people are treated, Shan George is still making her strides in Nollywood. In this interview with JOE AGBRO JR., she opens up on child marriage, women and why she can date a younger man, among other issues. Excerpts

WHAT’S Shan George up to these days?

I just premiered my movie titled ‘Grey Shadows’ which I am trying to actually finish and see how I can go to cinema or find other avenues or platforms to release the movie on. But for now, we’re just still trying to tidy up the movie. So probably by that April, we’ll be making way to see if it will be able to be in cinemas.

    What’s ‘Grey Shadows’ all about?

Actually, to put it in a very simple sense, it’s about the negligence of medical practitioners towards sick people generally. People that are working now in the medical sector really don’t seem to bother much about sick people because I’m imagining if you were passionate about an ill person and they bring a sick person to you, you won’t first be asking for money.

Recently, International Women Day was celebrated. Do you think the same standard applied to western women should be applied to Nigerian women given that we’re a parochial society?

Well, that was in the 1840s. I mean, we’re now in the 20th century. At the end of the day, a whole lot of our culture or our traditions are actually taking a back seat. And when you talk about women of western world and women of Nigeria, I don’t think that there’s any difference between women of western world and women of Nigeria because a woman is a woman, irrespective of wherever she is.

This year makes it 21 years you’ve been in Nollywood. Have you experienced sexual harassment?

First of all, I’ve been in Nollywood for not 21 years. It was in 1996. So, now, it’s 22 years. I joined Nollywood when I was a student. By the time I was going to have time for the Nollywood when I was doing my final semester to graduate from school, I started producing my own movies. It doesn’t mean I’m saying maybe some people have not experienced it. I probably didn’t hustle the Nollywood work long enough or hard enough because I really wasn’t planning to go into Nollywood when I got into Nollywood. I already got a role even before I even got auditioned. I was introduced by someone who was already there. More like, I had a mentor already. And she’s a female.

You said Nollywood wasn’t part of your initial plan. What did you want to do when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a lawyer so that I would go and jail all the corrupt people (Laughs). Actually, my dream as a kid was to be a lawyer. And truly, truly, why I dreamt of being a lawyer when I was growing up was because I just felt that as a lawyer, I would be able to lock up a lot of criminals, including in my home (town) – all those 60 year-old-men marrying 16-year-old girls.

Does it really touch you so much when older men marry younger ladies?

This is the part of culture and tradition that I was trying to talk about when I said they’re obsolete right now. And I pitied a lot of my age mates then back home who found themselves in that kind of shoes. I come from a very small village where there wasn’t much for me to see or know. There was no electricity as at the time I was growing up back home. Although, now, our place be like small London.

So, are you saying it was in a similar way you were carted off to be married?

    Gbam, gbammer, gbammest.

    Wow

(Laughs). Yes, my mother just told me I was going to get married. There’s a man who wanted to marry me. And the man did not toast me. I did not toast him. We didn’t fall in love (Laughs). He went straight to my mum and then… (Laughs).

But you must be consoled now as I saw pictures of your grown-up sons some time ago and you three looked so happy.

We were just female children that were growing up that the only thing they envisioned for us the female children was to give us out for marriage. You know, that’s why we have the culture of put you in fattening room. They just practically groom every female child for marriage. When I used to do singing, I did a track, although my songs are in my native dialect. I was practically begging my people to please start sending female children to school.

As a female child, if they send you to school, every other uncle is like, ‘what are you doing early morning? One man would marry her now.’ The name change was such a big deal. An Inyang would say, why should I train Ekaette Inyang finish and she come and be Ekaette Okonkwo? They felt they were going to be wasting their money on a female child because she’s going to get married and bear totally different names from their own names. So, they couldn’t be bothered. A lot of people were okay with it. I mean, I was okay with mine. I didn’t struggle or cry or say I no go do. I just flowed because it was a norm actually.

Throughout your career, what would you consider as the most challenging part so far either as an actress or a producer?

The thing is that in this job, every role is challenging and the reason is very easy. It’s because you’re a Christian and you’re going to play a Moslem. You don’t drink alcohol and you get roles where you have to play a drunk. You’ve never been drunk in your life. And the most challenging is when I had to play a mermaid because I had never seen a mermaid. I don’t even know if they do exist in real life. So, how do you talk like a mermaid, eat like a mermaid, smile like a mermaid, command like a mermaid when you have never seen a mermaid in your life? I would say that was the most challenging part when you have to play spiritual things that are not even human. How do you study how to be a mermaid?

    In which movie was that?

Highway to the grave, produced by Helen Ukpabio.

Now, talking about mermaid, you’re a beautiful woman and men would surely be attracted to you. How do you manage unwanted attention from men?

Well, I just gently let you know I’m not available.

I also read reports that Shan George likes to date younger men. Is that true?

Yes, I know they’ll say that. It’s because a lot of people don’t know my kids. As you rightly said earlier on, you see how grown up my kids are. So many people have seen me with my kids and they think they’re my boyfriends. And me, I don’t have time to be explaining to anybody. So, they now ended up with that notion that you’re talking now and I couldn’t be bothered.

Do you think age should count in a relationship?

    No, I don’t think so.

Can you date a younger person or marry a younger person?

You want me to say a yes or a no?

If you can do that, it’ll be okay

Yes, I will because I’m someone who believes that age is not about maturity. You can be old and you’re stupid old man. If I get the opportunity of meeting a younger man than I am – even if he is six months younger than you, he is still a younger man – who is mature-minded, it’s still better than an old foolish man as far as I’m concerned.

Are you looking at giving marriage another try?

I can’t say yes or no based on the fact that I still think that marriage as a very spiritual union is something that if it’s meant to be, you cannot hold it or stop it. So, you cannot just say, ‘no, lai lai. I can never marry.’ Neither can you say that ‘Yes, please ooo, I want to marry.’ Because if I want to marry, the husband would not come. If you say you don’t want to marry, you end up meeting someone that you really want to be with. So, that question, I would not say yes or no to it.

You added your voice to the tithing controversy. Are you pro or anti tithing? And why?

It’s just simple. It’s not in the Bible. And if you are someone who calls yourself a Christian who is following the lifestyle of Jesus Christ, then you should go off that way of Jesus Christ. And tithes is not one of Jesus Christ’ rules and regulations. It’s not what he even practiced himself. So, at the end of the day, I don’t have issue with whoever wants to go and be paying the tithes or any 419 pastor that wants to be collecting your tithe. I, Shan George, I don’t tithe to any pastor. I carry any money that I have – Oh, I’ve made N10 today – let me give my neighbour N2 who was looking for money for her child’s school fees yesterday. That’s how I pay my own tithes.

  • How Shan George’s mum’s illness inspired her latest movie

Nollywood actress and producer Shan George, has said her mother’s illness inspired her latest movie, ‘Grey Shadows.’

According to Shan, the movie which was recently premiered focused on how sick people are treated in the country.

“Actually, to put it in a very simple sense, it’s about the negligence of medical practitioners towards sick people generally,” said Shan in an interview with The Nation.

“People that are working now in the medical sector really don’t seem to bother much about sick people because I’m imagining if you were passionate about an ill person and they bring a sick person to you, you won’t first be asking for money physically.”

The actress also revealed that her mum’s illness motivated her to produce the movie which she said is expected to be public by April.

“My mum was sick for six years. So, since 2011 till towards the end of 2017, my mum had been bedridden. I saw a lot while I was in the hospital trying to take care of my mum. We actually went from one hospital to another to another to another. She spent time in a lot of different hospitals. And a lot of different reasons led to her being in different hospitals in those seven years which she ended up at the Calabar Teaching Hospital finally. And I had to also move to Calabar based on the fact that my mum was moved to Calabar by her doctor in Abuja. They moved us to Calabar so, they we practically moved there. I mean, being that we’re also from Cross River State, it was a bit easier. I got a lot of experiences from there. Also, other peoples’ own. And put them into make a movie.  You know how e bi na.”

  • Shan George chides British promoter over son’s music

Shan George chides British promoter over son’s music

NOLLYWOOD actress, Shan George, has expressed her disappointment with the London-based promoters of Edo Boy, a new song by her second son, Jaga.

According to the actress, who is also the official manager of her son’s music career, the promoters, Babylynn Promotions, released the song without letting her approve of it first. She also complained that the song is too long, and that it may give her some problems, when it is time to shoot its video. She noted that most TV stations in Nigeria don’t take in music videos that exceed a certain number of minutes.

Although the song, which was released last Monday, is currently making waves on some of the world’s popular music sites and radio stations, George is concerned about the success of the video in Nigeria.

Reacting to the allegation, Ms Linda Jacks, Head of Babylynn Promotions, said the decision to release the song without the prior knowledge of the artiste’s mother was deliberate.

“The song wasn’t given to Jaga’s manager before release, because when we released Jaga’s other song, Mboro, two months ago, Shan George gave out the song to too many people before release date, and that affected the monitoring of the progress on the song out there. That is the reason our company decided not to give out the song to anyone before release date,” Jacks said.

The artiste is however indifferent to the disagreement between his mother and Babylynn Promotions. In his words: “I’m doing good music, the two ladies; my mom and promoter should be dancing instead of fighting,” he said, laughing out loud.

  • Crazy thing a fan did to me

Crazy thing a fan did to me

Nollywood actress, Florence Johnson, hugged the klieglights in 2011 with her daring and very challenging lead role in a flick entitled Finding Goodluck, produced by Shan George. The Kogi State-born actress, among other things, tells Adetutu Audu about the craziest thing a fan did to her.

IS it because you studied Theatre Arts that made you go fully into acting?

Acting started for me shortly after my graduation in the year 2011 through Henry Ejeta whom I met when I was still in school. He and some of his crew members had come to show a movie in my department (Theatre Arts). Along the line, they encountered problem with their power generating set and out of my kindhearted nature I allowed them make use of my generator because I lived outside campus. At the end, he gave me his contact and promised to help me in the movie world when I’m done with school and that was what he did by introducing me to Chico Ejiro who gave me my first role. After that, I started going for auditions and here I am today. On the other hand, back in school, I was involved in a lot of stage productions. I was involved in Kongi Harvest written by Prof. Wole Soyinka, where I played the wife of Oba Danlola. It was performed in Abeokuta and Abuja. I was also involved in Who’s Afraid of Solarin written by Prof. Femi Osofisan, and another one by Prof. Ola Rotimi. I did quite a lot of stage plays while still in school. In Nollywood, I have done a couple of great works some of which include Finding Goodluck, Misery, Lekki Wives, Street Singles, Living Hope, Tales of Eve, So Wrong So Wright, Eldorado, Tinsel, No Where To Be Found, among others. But I’m still relatively young in the industry.

Which of these movies gave you the big break?

I’m still waiting for a big break (Laughs). But I’d say it’s Finding Goodluck because it was my first major film and I got to play a lead role in it. It was a great feeling to play a lead role in my first major movie.

How did you secure the lead role in Finding Goodluck?

I gave my all in the audition. I’m sure you will understand what it means by flying down to Calabar for audition? I flew to Calabar for the audition and I had no choice than to give my all in order to secure the role and don’t come back empty handed to Lagos. I believed it was just God. The production manager recommended me to the producer and I was asked to come down to Calabar where the movie was shot. The fact is that the producer was looking for a black beautiful lady with all the endowments, a resemblance to Mercy Johnson.

    What kind of endowments?

They were looking for an endowed sexy actress and I fit the picture.

Most men can hardly get their eyes off you; how do you cope considering the fact that lots of them would want to ‘get down’ with you?

I cope well with my male admirers. Men are always men. The truth is that, even if I’m not in the movie industry men would still flock after me because of my look let alone being a movie star. I cope by dealing with them in a very polite way so I won’t be seen as being rude. And of course some understand and are mature enough to respect me. It’s just the best way to handle them and God has been giving me the wisdom to deal with them because you can’t also do without them.

What is the craziest thing a male fan or admirer has done to you?

During the First Lady’s Advocacy For Women Empowerment at the Eko Hotel, a male fan/admirer suddenly held me from the back – like trying to hug me from the back – and his two hands were right on my boobs! I couldn’t see the face so I screamed and a security man held him off me. He wanted to prostrate in front of me saying he’s sorry that it was just an overexcitement. He said he’s my friend on facebook and watches me on Super Story, Finding Goodluck, and that he likes what he saw. I was really embarrassed and I was like ‘God, is this what I’m in for?’

But how does it feel being well-endowed?

I feel right, cool and damn sexy with it but I’m not rubbing it in people’s faces. I don’t have to expose it before you notice them because I have it enough and I’m not the only one to have that.

Why do think most marriages in Nollywood break up? And as a soon-to-get-married actress, what is your stance on divorce?

Marriages everywhere hardly last, not just in Nollywood. People talk about Nollywood alone because we are in the public but the truth is, divorce happens everywhere, everyday.

    Have you ever been heartbroken?

Yes I’ve been heartbroken and it wasn’t an easy experience. But now I can boldly tell you that I’ve forgotten the experience because I’m totally happy now. The experience is now a past thing in my life so I don’t even want to remember it anymore.

What attracts you to a man?

I get attracted to men with sense of humour. Basically, you must be a very neat man before I look at you.

So is there the lucky man yet and how does he feel having such a pretty, busty and sexy lady like you?

Of course he feels great but you know it’s more than the physical appearance. I believe choosing a life partner, be it man or woman, should be more than physical appearance; it should revolve around character, level of tolerance and so on, not just the sexiness or handsomeness. So what I’m saying is that he feels great about me in person and not just about me being a sexy lady.

    What is your life-guiding philosophy?

Live and let’s live! My belief is that there’s nothing in this world, so we should just try and make life comfortable for others. Treat people the way you would want them to treat you and your loved ones.

When was your most exciting moment?

I’m a happy woman. I’m always excited but I’m most excited when I’m facing the cameras. It gives me joy to be in front of the cameras.

You are very close to Desmond Elliot, what is the attraction?

Very close to Desmond? Well, I met him for the first time during the premiere of Finding Goodluck. Desmond is someone I admire a lot. He is one of the few actors that have maintained his home for years and has also remained free from scandal. He is very intelligent and also friendly. Since we met, we’ve been communicating; he is also like a brother to me and also interested in my career.

Are you saying there is nothing else attached?

There is nothing attached to it. He is just a friend and guide in my career. His wife is also my friend on BBM, so noting could have been happening between us.

If you were to date anybody in the industry, who could that be?

Hmmm! I think that would be John Dumelo from Ghana.

    Why him?

I love dark, tall guys. He is very cute, trendy and has a great physique. He is also very talented and real with his work (laughs).

  • Shan George does it again

    Shan George does it again

SHE is better known for delivering her roles on screen so when few years ago, Shan George released her debut single which announced her arrival into the music industry from the movie world, she didn’t receive the critical acclaim she probably expected.

Undaunted by the bleak success her song made in the market, the controversial actress has, once again, gone back to the studio to try her hands on something different. This time around, that Shan employed the services of a co-controversial producer, K-Solo to make a beat for her new single, Ababa.

That is not all for the divorcee actress as she also featured ace musician, Sunny Nneji in the song. The single was released last week almost at the same time Tonto Dikeh and Stella Damasus released theirs but the buzz Tonto’s singles generated has overshadowed her own release.
