Sheikh Al-Ilory demands apology from blogger for alleged defamation

Popular Muslim cleric, Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Al-Ilory has demanded apology from Instablog9ja for alleged defamation of his character.

A statement on behalf of the cleric by his lawyers, Shuaib Mustapha & Co, entitled, “Misleading and malicious posts of doctored video clip with the aim of inciting public rage against Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Al-Ilory”  described as scandalous the purported claims made by @Instablog9ja in which the blogger on his Facebook and Instagram accounts posted a video clip with a view to incite public hatred and malice against the cleric.

In the statement reads in part: “In the said video clip, our client was portrayed by you with a negative posture of extremism of ideological conviction. You made a caption: ‘Tongues wag as popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Al-Ilory reveals what will happen to those that use satellite dish.”

The lawyers, who claimed that their client has been the butt of derisive jokes, served the blogger a notice demanding a retraction of the malicious posts among other reliefs.

Specifically, they requested the blogger to publish unreserved apologies across all social media platforms, take down all posts relating to the subject matter, reposting the full video clip stating the proper context of the lectures by the cleric, as well as liaise with other platforms where the posts have been shared, tweeted to delete same within seven days or face legal action to press for damages.

“In the event of your failure to heed our client’s demand within seven days, we shall be compelled to file legal actions against you and your media platforms seeking damages as well as other ancillary reliefs that would deter your likes from using social media to bring people of integrity into disrepute.”

In a related development, lawyers to Sheikh Al-Ilorypetitioned the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and prosecute suspects involved in the campaign of calumny against the cleric.

Specifically, the lawyers identified The Punch @MobilePunch, Wahala Network @Wahalanetwork and Mazi Tunde Ednut @MaziTundeEdnut, and Instablog9ja as some of the platforms which reportedly amplified the malicious content against the person of Sheikh Al-Ilory, thereby bringing him under disrepute in the eyes of the public.

The lawyers, while reiterating that the news platforms identified deliberately spread falsehood, malicious and unfounded statements against their client, urged the top police boss to order full scale investigation on the matter with a view to prosecute the suspects in order to serve as a deterrent for others.

Satellite dishes, women in politics not haram – Sheikh Al-Ilory

Prominent cleric and leader of the Markaz Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Agege, Lagos, Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Al-Ilory has challenged traditional views on satellite dishes and women’s roles in society.

In a viral video, he questioned the notion that using satellite dishes or women participating in politics and driving cars are forbidden.

He argued that those who cite the Quran to support their claims often lack a deep understanding of the scripture.

Sheikh Ilory pointed out the world is evolving, and what may have been considered unacceptable in the past may now be permissible.

He cited the example of Saudi Arabia, where women are now allowed to drive and participate in politics, and are even being trained in the military.

He noted that he faced criticism for his views on women’s participation in politics in 2010, but time has proven him correct.

The cleric emphasised that people’s salvation should not be determined by superficial judgments based on changing times and circumstances.

Instead, he advocates for a more nuanced understanding of Islamic teachings and their application in modern society.

“He said: “They said anybody who uses a satellite dish and hangs it on the roof of his house and dies will not enter paradise because he/she committed ‘haram’. If a woman drives a car or participates in politics it’s haram. But women are not fighting for the right to drive cars in Saudi Arabia, and it’s no longer haram.”

“When I said it earlier in 2010 that women can be involved in politics, people criticised me. Not long after my statements in 2010, Saudi Arabia allowed women to vote and participate in politics.

“Presently they’re training women in military in Saudi Arabi and they now wear trousers.  One Alfa who criticised this evolvement was quoting a part of the scripture I believe he has no understanding of.”
