    Tinubu renames FUMS Azare after late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Science (FUMS), Azare, after the late renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, as part of efforts to preserve and immortalise his legacy.

    The President made this known on Saturday during a condolence visit to the family of the late cleric in Bauchi State , describing his death as a “great national loss.”

    Nation reports that President Tinubu arrived in Bauchi on Saturday to condole with the state government and the family of the late renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

    Sheikh Dahiru, the spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyya Brotherhood in Nigeria, died on November 27 at the age of 98.

    The President arrived at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport at about 4:10 p.m., where he was received with a Guard of Honour by the Nigerian Air Force.

    Tinubu was accompanied by the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; his son, Seyi Tinubu; and other top government officials.

    He was received at the airport by the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; and Senator Shehu Buba (APC, Bauchi South).

    The President is expected to proceed to Lagos after the condolence visit to spend the end-of-year holidays.

    Speaking at the late Sheikh Dahiru mosque, Tinubu said the decision to rename the university after the Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was in recognition of the cleric’s lifelong contributions to education, religious scholarship, humility, and service to humanity.

    He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of the late scholar asking that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus, while also seeking strength for the family, the Bauchi State Government, and the people of the state to bear the loss.

    The President urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace and unity in the country, stressing the importance of collective resilience during challenging times.

    Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who received the presidential delegation, appreciated President Tinubu for honouring the late cleric and Bauchi State through the retention and renaming of the institution.

    Responding on behalf of the family, the eldest son of the late cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the visit, prayers, and the decision to immortalise their father through the university.

    He also thanked Governor Mohammed for his continued support to the family.

    Recall Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi died at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, and was buried on Friday, November 28, in accordance with Islamic rites.

    Born in 1927 in Gombe State, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi devoted his life to the advancement of Islamic education, promotion of peaceful coexistence and fostering of unity across the country.

    His teachings, which emphasised moral discipline, tolerance and adherence to Islamic principles, earned him a large following and deep respect within and beyond Nigeria.

    He also played a significant role in community development, mentorship of young scholars and the strengthening of religious understanding.

    The funeral prayer for late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, will be led by the Grand Imam of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sheikh Sheriff Saleh, at the Eid Ground along Gombe Road in Bauchi.

    The prayer is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.

    The choice of Saleh was made by the late scholar in his written will, which specified that Sheikh Sharif Saleh should preside over his final rites.

    Sheikh Saleh, a distinguished Islamic scholar, teacher and notable mufassir, also serves as the head of the Supreme Council for Fatwa and Islamic Affairs in Nigeria (NSCIA).

    His role in leading the funeral prayer underscores the deep respect and spiritual connection shared between the two prominent clerics.

    Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.

    His death marks the end of an era for millions of followers who revered him for his decades of contributions to Islamic scholarship, spirituality and community development.

    Alhaji Maulud Dahiru Bauchi who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family, said the funeral is expected to attract high-profile dignitaries from across the country.

    Among those anticipated are Vice President Kashim Shettima and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, governors of Borno, Gombe and Bauchi states, who all signalled their intention to attend, alongside emirs and chiefs from across the country.

    Thousands of students, admirers and community leaders are also expected at the funeral, which is set to be one of the most significant gatherings in honour of a cleric whose teachings shaped generations.

    The Founder MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has expressed deep shock over the death of the great Islamic scholar,  Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi who passed away on Thursday, 27th November, 2025.

    In a condolence in Kano- Nigeria on Friday, Prof. Gwarzo expressed his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the deceased.

    Gwarzo said the death of the Islamic scholar was a great loss not only to his family, but to Muslim Ummah and Nigeria at large.

    “We really lost a respected and great Islamic scholar who spent his life in teaching and preaching. The cleric would continue to be remembered by his followers not only in Nigeria but across African continent.

    “On behalf of the MAAUN Group of Universities, I wish to extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and his followers in Nigeria and beyond,” the statement said.

    Prof. Gwarzo also extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bauchi State over the great loss, praying to Allah to forgive the deceased and comfort his family especially during this period of grief. 

    He also prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the late Islamic scholar Aljannah Firdaus and his family the fortitude to bear the great loss 

    The Islamic scholar who left behind four wives, many children and grandchildren, had since been buried in Bauchi.

    The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the Muslim Ummah and the end of an era in Islamic scholarship.

    In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the organisation said its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, received the news of the scholar’s death with “a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah.”

    The Sultan extended condolences to the late cleric’s family, disciples, the Tijjaniyya brotherhood, the Bauchi State Government, and the wider Muslim community.

    JNI praised Sheikh Bauchi as a guiding light whose decades of commitment to Qur’anic teaching, spiritual mentorship, and moral guidance influenced thousands across Nigeria and beyond.

    “His entire life was devoted to the Qur’an and its studies,” the statement said. “He was a beacon of guidance and unwavering commitment to the cause of Islam.”

    The organisation added that many of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s children are memorizers of the Qur’an, underscoring his lifelong devotion to Islamic knowledge and his mentorship of young scholars across generations.

    JNI described his death as a reminder of the transient nature of life, urging Muslims to reflect, renew their faith, and remain steadfast in acts of worship and kindness.

    “We should always turn to Allah with sincere repentance, good deeds, and service to humanity before death comes,” it added.

    The body urged the family, disciples, and millions of adherents across the country to accept the loss with faith and remain united, prayerful, and committed to sustaining the late Sheikh’s teachings and values. It stressed that his legacy of discipline, piety, and service to Islam must not be allowed to fade.

    JNI prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the late scholar, asking the Almighty to forgive his shortcomings, grant him ease in the grave, and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus, alongside all departed Muslims who contributed to the growth of Islam.

    Former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, also joined Nigerians in mourning the revered cleric, describing his death as “a monumental shock and a painful separation” despite his long and impactful life in the service of Allah.

    In a personal tribute, Makarfi said the late Sheikh Tahir Bauchi—whom he described as an institution—lived a life fully devoted to Islamic scholarship, Qur’anic exegesis, spiritual guidance, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse communities.

    He recalled the Sheik’s leadership of the Tijjaniyya order, his decades-long Ramadan tafsir in Kaduna since 1980, and his establishment and funding of hundreds of Qur’anic schools across the country, noting that such contributions made him “a spiritual guide who inspired millions on the path of Allah.”

    Makarfi described the cleric as an eloquent preacher with legendary mastery of Qur’anic interpretation and Islamic theology, saying his scholarship was “universal, phenomenal and unmatched across generations.”

    The former governor also reflected on his personal encounters with the Sheikh, saying the cleric’s private counsel during his time in office between 1999 and 2007 provided wisdom that helped him navigate difficult political and governance challenges. “For this, I will remain eternally grateful,” he said.

    He extended condolences to the family, disciples, the Bauchi State Government, the Nigerian Muslim community, and the entire nation, praying to Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest in Aljannah and give the nation the fortitude to bear the loss.

    The passing of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, both JNI and Makarfi stressed, marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s religious history—one defined by knowledge, humility, patience, and total devotion to the service of Islam.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, one of Nigeria’s most revered Islamic scholars and leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood, who died on Thursday at the age of 101.

    In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late cleric as “a moral compass who dedicated his life to teaching and preaching.” 

    He noted that Sheikh Bauchi’s death represents a monumental loss not only to his immediate family and followers but to the entire nation.

    President Tinubu recalled the spiritual guidance and support he received from the revered scholar, especially during the period leading up to the 2023 presidential election. 

    “Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a teacher, a father and a voice of moderation and reason. As both a preacher and a notable exegete of the Holy Quran, he was an advocate of peace and piety. His death has created a huge void,” the President said.

    The President extended heartfelt condolences to the Tijjaniyya community across Nigeria and beyond, urging them to honour the cleric’s memory by upholding the values he espoused. 

    He called on followers to remain steadfast in their relationship with God, promote peaceful coexistence and show kindness to humanity.

    Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, widely respected for his scholarship and spiritual influence, spent decades teaching Islamic jurisprudence, mentoring clerics, and providing guidance to millions of followers.

    President Tinubu prayed for the repose of his soul and encouraged the nation to draw inspiration from the late cleric’s lifelong commitment to peace, faith, and moral discipline.

    Renowned Islamic scholar and revered cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi is dead.

    He was 98.

    The highly respected Dariqa scholar, born on June 29, 1927, died on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

    Confirming his passing, a close associate, Daha Azhary Bauchi, announced, “Innaa lillahi wa innaa ilaihi raji’un… Maulana Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi has passed away (Wafaty).

    “May Allah bless us with his blessings.”

    Another close disciple, Abubakar Ibrahim Wunti, also confirmed the scholar’s death on Thursday morning.

    Sheikh Dahiru was widely regarded as one of the most influential Islamic figures in Nigeria and beyond.

    He spent his life promoting Islamic teachings, advancing Quranic education, and mentoring students in the memorisation and recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

    For decades, he led thousands of disciples and made remarkable contributions to Islamic scholarship and spiritual development.
