  • Govt, Shiites clash over El-Zakzaky

THE Federal Government on Wednesday disagreed with a claim by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) that its leader Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky was being treated like a criminal in India.

The Shi’ite leader also alleged that the condition at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi, India where he is supposed to be receiving treatment is worse than that in Nigeria.

But the government said there was no iota of truth in the allegation.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Culture, Mrs. Grace Isu Gekpe, said the IMN leader started acting against laid down procedures during a stopover in Dubai, en route New Delhi.

Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), who is the Shi’ite leader’s counsel, described the reports from India as disturbing. He said he was in touch with the government for immediate intervention.

Falana said: “The reports from the Indian hospital are very disturbing. We have forwarded El-Zakzaky’s complaint to the Federal Government.

“I have just confirmed that the Nigerian High Commission in India has intervened to ensure that the tight security situation is relaxed to prepare El-Zakzaky for the medical treatment and that they are allowed access to their personal physicians.

El-Zakzaky, who was granted leave from detention by a Kaduna High Court on medical grounds, was flown to New Delhi with his wife, Zenaat, on Monday.

Some security operatives and family members travelled with them.

El-Zakzaky, who spoke in an audio message that has since gone viral accused the Federal Government of frustrating his treatment in India.

Speaking in Hausa, he said the situation at the hospital is “pathetic and worrisome”.

According to El-Zakzaky, the management of Medanta Hospital, had been threatened not to admit him for treatment.

He said: “The hospital officials received us well; they told us that they parked two ambulances, deceiving the crowd while taking us out through another way, saying it was for our own safety. On getting to the hospital, we were placed under a tighter security situation worse than what we have witnessed in Nigeria. We are currently more confined than when we were in Nigeria, worse than a prison setting.

“Contrary to what was agreed before our arrival, that our own personal doctors would supervise this treatment. Now they’ve changed the arrangement. So we objected receiving treatment from strange doctors without the supervision of our own trusted physicians.”

In the audio, the IMN leader said he wants to return to Nigeria to source for a reliable and trusted hospital among those countries that offered help.

“There are some other countries that volunteered to help which include Malaysia, Turkey,” he added.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has expressed concerns about El-Zakzaky’s treatment in India. It accused the Indian government of becoming an enforcer for the Nigerian government.

The IMN also on Wednesday claimed that El-Zakzaky was caged and being denied freedom by the Federal Government and some interests linked to the United States (U.S.)

It alleged that the U.S. Government through its embassy in India, told the hospital management not to admit the Shi’ite’ leader.

The IMN’s claim could not be independently confirmed last night

IMN’s Secretary-General of Academic Forum, Abdullahi Musa, told reporters in Abuja that the Federal Government was forcing El-Zakzaky to accept treatment as a criminal.

Musa said after El-Zakzaky and his wife got to the hospital, the Federal Government, through the security agents who escorted the Shi’ite leader, did not follow the court order.

He said: “The government acted contrary to what was earlier stated in the Kaduna High Court (ruling) by devising new types of plots to frustrate his (El-Zakzaky’s) doctors from offering emergency treatment to the Sheikh, whose health has seriously deteriorated as a result of the gunshots inflicted on him by the Nigerian Army and his subsequent poisoning during his detention in Kaduna where he was illegally detained and deprived Medical attention for years.

He added: “As I speak with you, the Federal Government has given El-Zakzaky two hours to accept to be treated as a criminal.

“They refused completely to allow the doctors he requested to treat him and his wife access to them.

“We are also calling on the international community and people of conscience and humanity, especially those who facilitated the travelling of the Sheikh to India for treatment, to prevail on the Nigerian government and its western masters to stop playing with the life of the innocent leader who is a victim of their continuous plot to ensure that he dies.”

  • El-Zakzaky asking for five-star hotel, refusing to stay in hospital, says FG

The Federal Government has accused leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky of being unruly in India.

It denied hindering his treatment, stating the sect leader was instead requesting for five-star attention during his medical trip.

In a statement Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Isu Gekpe, the federal government said since El-Zakzaky had a stop over in Dubai, he has been displaying ulterior motives against laid down procedures.

It stated the situation became worse in India as the IMN  leader refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks.

The federal government said he was also demanding for free movement and access to visitors of all kinds as well as requested to be allowed to check into a five-star Hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.

The statement said:  “The Court on 5th August, 2019 granted Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky leave to travel to India for medical treatment.  Consequently, the Government and its relevant agencies took steps to comply with the Order.

“In line with the Court Order, El-Zakzaky was approved to embark on the trip with State officials and his choice to be accompanied by his aides and personal Doctors was not opposed by the government.

“On 12th August, 2019, he and other members of the entourage went to India via Dubai. It is to be noted that El-Zakzaky particularly chose Medanta Hospital, India. However, on reaching Dubai, El-Zakzaky began to display ulterior motives against laid down procedures.

“He requested that his passport be handed over to him but the State officials would not budge to his pressure. The situation became worse in India as he refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks.

” In addition, he demanded free movement and access to visitors of all kinds as well as requested to be allowed to check into a five-star Hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.

“The request was refused on the ground that he came into the country for medicals and not as a tourist (more so that his Visa was issued on medical grounds and not for tourism).

“He also demanded that Police protection be withdrawn from him by the Indian authorities.

“Against medical ethics and standard practice, he requested to nominate doctors of his choice to join the ones tasked by Medanta Hospital to perform medical treatment on him and his wife

“This created a stalemate, which the Hospital insisted that he would not dictate to it on the choice of medical personnel to carry the required medical treatment.

“Frustrated by his antics, the Indian authorities have expressed willingness to return him to Nigeria with immediate effect

“This is on the account that they will not allow him use their country to internationalize his group’s activities.

“Against this background, the Nigerian government wishes to commend the stand of the Indian Government as well as apologise to her for the unruly behaviour of El-Zakzaky

“Similarly, the attention of the public and indeed the international community is hereby drawn to these unfortunate developments.

“The government also wishes to use this opportunity to affirm its readiness to undertake the prosecution of El-Zakzaky through due process if and when he is returned to the country.

“On this note, his foul cry that he is being held in circumstances worse than he was in Nigeria should be disregarded.”

  • Abuja on lock down as Shittes celebrate El-Zakzaky’s birthday, detention

Members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria  (IMN ) popularly known as the Shiites on Tuesday locked down human and vehicular traffic in the ever busy Central District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark the 68th birthday anniversary and 224 days of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky’ s detention.

The group in their usual fashion of filling according to age grade and sex trooped out in hundreds chanting war-like songs as they marched through major roads demanding justice for their detained leaders.

Though the procession was peaceful, they accused President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration of trampling on the rights of the members of IMN,  especially El Zazaky and his wife that have been illegally kept behind bars for 1,224 days despite court orders they should be released.

Abdullahi Musa, the spokesperson of the group, said that IMN will not relent to demand for justice over the Zaria massacre of its members by soldiers.

According to him: “Despite the recommendation made by the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) of July 2016 for the prosecution of the perpetrators of Zaria massacre, the Nigerian Government under Buhari is yet to prosecute the perpetrators of these great atrocities.”

Shittes have been having a running battle with security forces in Kaduna and Abuja since 12 December 2015, when Army reportedly killed over 1000 members of the group after at Zaria, Kaduna State.

They claimed the invasion of their procession then was “a planned and systematic attack on Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky  launched by the Nigerian Army under a hoax of road blockage.

“The attack lasted for more than 48 hours and led to the killing of more than 1,000 people, including women and children” .

They also alleged that sons of Sheikh Zakzaky namely, Ali, Hamid and Humaid died during the attack.

  • Kaduna High Court rejects El-Zakzaky’s bail application

Kaduna State High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail application of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife.
The bail application which was premised on health ground was turned down by the presiding judge who said there are enough Medical Doctors around to take care of his health needs should the need arises.
This was made known to newsmen by the state prosecutor Dari Bayero after the sitting of the court as newsmen were not allowed into the court room.
Consequently the court has adjourned the case to 22 January, 2019 for what it termed as ‘speedy trial’ of the Sheikh and three others.
In the sitting, five count charges were read to the accused and his wife who were in attendance. The Sheikh however pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Barrister Haruna Magashi, one of the lawyers of the Sheikh told newsmen that they will study the court’s judgment on their bail application for their client and determine the next course of action.

Meanwhile, reacting to the refusal of the court to grant the Sheikh bail, Ibrahim Musa, President Media Forum of IMN said, “We are disappointed with the courts’ decision, because it should have considered his failing health. Secondly it shows that the government is not ready to listen to us, well-meaning Nigerians and the international community that our leader should be set free as ordered by another federal high court. Therefore we will keep on with our protests in Abuja and other cities insha Allah.”
As usual Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife Malama Zeenah Ibrahim were brought to court early in the morning amidst tight security while major routes leading to the court where all barricaded with vehicular and other forms of movement restricted on these routes.
The Islamic leader and his wife are to remain in custody till the next adjourned date.
  • Shi’ites want bodies of members buried in mass grave exhumed

Shi’ites want bodies of members buried in mass grave exhumed

Members of the Shi’ites Islamic sect under the auspice of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) have demanded the exhumation of their members allegedly maimed, killed during the sect’s clash with men of the Nigerian Army in Zaria and buried in mass grave in Kaduna.

This was as it called on the international community, especially the United Nations, European Union, African Union, ECOWAS and the International Criminal Court to add more pressure on the President Muhammadu Buhari led the government to release IMN leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky who has been in DSS custody since over 700 days ago.

A member of Free Zakzaky campaign committee, Sheikh Abdulhamid Bello stated this during press conference in Kaduna, titled ‘two years horrendous Zaria Massacre and the continued detention of Sheikh Zakzaky,’ said the need to exhume all its members killed by the army was for them to have proper identification and burial according to Islamic rites.

According to him, “it is unfortunate that within these two years, the Islamic Movement has continued to be persecuted and denied our religious rights.

“But We have compiled a detail report of everything that happens and submitted to the International Criminal Court at the Hague. They have since announced that they have opened preliminary into the matter.”

“We call on the international community, and especially the UN, EU, AU, ECOWAS and the ICC to add more pressure on the government to live up to its responsibilities as regards to the issue of the Islamic Movement in general and Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky in particular or be prepared to be ostracized and convicted.”

Speaking further, Sheikh Bello demanded the immediate release of the Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife and other members who according to him ‘were unlawfully detained’ adding that all those found to be responsible either in the planning or execution of horrendous attacks on our lives and properties must be brought to book, irrespective of their status.

According to him, “our demands remain as always the immediate release of Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife and all the hundreds being detained in various detention facilities across the country. Secondly, we demand that the corpses of all those killed, including those in the mass graves, must be exhumed and returned to us for identification and befitting burial according to Islamic rites.

“Also, all our confiscated properties must be returned to us and destroyed properties adequately compensated for, while we demand an open, independent and impartial inquiry to unearth the truth. Such an inquiry must have as members, persons with credible character, and there must be full participation of internationally accepted human rights groups as observers.

“Lastly, all those found to be responsible either in the planning or execution of these horrendous attacks must be brought to book, irrespective of their status,” the IMN leader said.

Court dismisses Zakzaky’s suit against army, FG, others

The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Thursday dismissed the suit filed by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and Malama Zeenat El-Zakzaky against Nigerian Army, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai and two others over abuse of court proceedings.

The Shii’tes leader and his wife had instituted a N2 billion suit against the army, Buratai, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Attorney General of Kaduna State over alleged invasion of their private house at No1 Wali Road Gyellesu, Zaria, Kaduna State, by armed soldiers who allegedly shot and killed three of their children and injured several other members of the Islamic movement.

Justice Saleh Musa Shuaibu said the 34- paragraph affidavit with two annexures filed by daughter of the plaintiffs, Zuhalla Ibraheem, was not clear enough, as the deponent did not state reason why she was the one deponing to the affidavit instead of her parents.

He said since the two suits separately brought by Sheikh el-Zakzaky and his wife were similar and seeking the same reliefs he decided to consolidate them to save time.

The suit filed by lead counsel to the applicants, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), is seeking eight reliefs that include declarations by the court that the violent invasion of the applicants’ private residence at No 1 Wali Road Gyellesu, Zaria, Kaduna State, by armed soldiers was a flagrant violation of their fundamental rights, that shooting of the applicants by armed soldiers who are agents of respondents one and two is illegal and unconstitutional and the cruel inhuman treatment of the applicants at their private residence was a flagrant violation of their fundamental right to dignity of human person.

  • Why El-Zakzaky, Dasuki are in detention

Why El-Zakzaky, Dasuki are in detention

The Buhari administration has not failed Nigerians, the Presidency said yesterday.

Besides, a proper assessment of the government’s performance could only be done at the end of its tenure, officials said.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Laolu Akande fielded questions from reporters at the State House in Abuja. It was a review of the administration’s two years at the helm.

They also spoke on why Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky and Col. Sambo Dasuki are still in detention in spite of court orders for their release.

Adesina said the All Progressives Congress (APC) “has four years to deliver and not two years”.

The person that asked the question said there is a buzz in town. I am sure that you have not conducted a scientific survey that shows you that is a popular position. People can always express their opinions; there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“Like the minister of transportation said recently, the APC did not promise to solve all the country’s problems in one year or two years.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed, just tell them it is too early in the day because it is a four-year term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years.”

TRENDING: This debit alert from GeNs@gtbank.com

On the alarm by Army chief Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai: Adesina said: “The Army has spoken and let us take that position. What the Chief of Army Staff said was a routine warning that goes to military officers – don’t hobnob with politicians –  and the army has explained the position, let’s take that position and not stretch it beyond what the military has said because they are the ones that can give us the definitive position and they have spoken on it.”

Stressing that the masses were happy with President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu said: “If elections were held today, Buhari will win overwhelmingly.  The masses are still with him.

The ordinary Nigerians are the pillars of the Buhari administration and their confidence in his administration has remained unshaken. The whistle-blower policy has excited them. They are happy that their stolen money is being recovered. The masses are happy but those elite whose sources of ill-gotten wealth have been blocked are not.

On why Dasuki and El-Zakzaky are still in detention, Shehu said: ”It is a common thing in all nations of the world that there are matters of public safety.

“The Attorney General and Minister of Justice has made his points here. In all cases, public good should override individual interest.”

He said El-Zak Zaky family members and relatives had unhindered access to him.

“On the issue of El-Zak Zaky, the information we have is that he is being kept more for his own safety than the offences he committed.

”If you set him free today, what do you think will likely be the reactions out there on the streets of Kaduna or in the streets of Zazzau where he comes from?.’’

He said Dasuki was being held because he had other criminal cases to answer, adding that his release might affect the investigation of cases against him.

On the Chibok girls, Shehu said the government had no peculiar interest in keeping them, stressing that most of them preferred to stay in Abuja and “don’t want to return home.”

“The human rights records of this administration are impeccable; they are unimpeachable. I think we should avoid speaking in general terms. The thing to do is to pinpoint specific cases to buttress assertions that people make and then we can tackle them.”

Shehu defended the power situation, saying: “It is also a mistake to say power has deteriorated under this administration because when we came in 2015, power generation was 3,324MW, it increased to 4,357MW as at August 2015, barely three months after President Buhari came to power and rose to the peak of 5,077MW in 2016, it was the highest power generated in the country.

“At present, the average generation is about 3,000mw. This is as a result of vandalism or gas pipeline infrastructure and also low water in our dams. The power sector is also gaining gradually from the peace in the Niger Delta. Usually, we experience low generation of power during dry season and this is not because of the Buhari administration.

“Government is investing heavily in power and has been licensing a lot of renewable energy projects, which is the future. We are doing what is called energy mix, we are not just doing gas power, we are doing hydro etc.”

On alleged weak prosecution, Akande said: “Our criminal justice system does need a profound and deep reform. The important thing is that this government is working on it. The Acting President has put together a national prosecution coordination team for all the cases to see how in the medium term we can bring some progress but also working on justice sector reforms in the long term, on criminal justice system to strengthen both the investigation and prosecution at the courts. And I know it is going to take a while for us to address it.”

  • Shiites as dangerous as Boko Haram –Zakzaky’s brother

Shiites as dangerous as Boko Haram –Zakzaky’s brother

Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yakoob, the Chairman of Izalatul Bid’ia wa Ikamatus sunna, Zaria Branch, is also the older brother of Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky, the detained Shi’ite leader. In this interview with select journalists, including Abdulgafar Alabelewe, the Islamic cleric justifies the ban on the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), saying that, the Zakzaky led Shiite is as dangerous as the Boko Haram sect.

LAST week, a Hausa language newspaper reported that you advocated for the continuous detention of your younger brother, Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky, who has been held for close to a year now by the government, following the clash between soldiers and Shiite sect members. Why did you make that statement?

No. I neither called for his continuous detention nor his release. What I said was that he is being detained by the authorities over inciting his members to block the Chief of Army Staff’s convoy last December. One thing led to another and people died in the process. I said, since it is the authorities that are holding him, it is them that can arraign him before a court which will prosecute or release him. It is not me or any other person that can do so. I didn’t say that he should be released because I am not the one that he offended but the government. So, I have no locus standi to call for his release or otherwise. This is what I told the newspaper. If what you said was what they quoted me as saying, then they have misunderstood what I said.

As his brother, have you attempted to meet him since he was detained because his lawyers have tried in vain?

No. I didn’t attempt to do so, even before he was detained, we never visited each other, even when he is sick or otherwise, because of difference in ideology. I am Ahlus sunna and he is a Shiite.

Recently, Kaduna State government decided to ban the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), thereby proscribing the activities of the Shiites. The ban was criticised in some quarters because it infringes on the sect’s freedom of worship. As a Muslim leader, do you think that the ban was justified?

What government did is not only obligatory but it is a Jihad of some sorts. The ban will bring about peace in the state. Before the ban, during their Ashura celebrations, most residents of Zaria dared not come out of their homes for at least three days. They used to take over the entire main roads of the town throughout the period. This time around, nothing of that sort happened. Their stock in trade was to infringe on people’s rights when they are practising their brand of religion. Islam frowns at people inconveniencing others in the practise of their own religion. What they were doing is not Islam. In my opinion, government did the right thing by banning their organisation because it endangered peace. The organization was always causing trouble. If government had not taken this step and the Shiittes starts receiving arms from Iran, they would have become another Boko Haram. They have not reached that stage before government acted. If they have not been proscribed, they would have formed their own government. Because they had their own soldiers, state governors, local government chairmen and even police. They had no regard for any constituted authority. So, if they had started getting arms from Iran, they would have risen against the state because they disregard every organ of the state.

If what you are saying is true, why didn’t past governments take measures to curb their activities until now?

This administration is more security conscious than past governments. Don’t you see how they have defeated Boko Haram? The government promised two main things; security of lives and property and the economy. Their war against insecurity includes containing Shiite members; banning them is one of the things that will bring peace in the country. They have spent close to 30 years harassing people and blocking highways during their activities. There was virtually no one that they have not denied the right of way. They have blocked a governor before and an army commander, even before COAS Yusuf Tukur Buratai. They have spent 30 years doing this, just because they have now been banned; people are saying that their rights have been violated. The way I see it, the ban has helped the people of Kaduna State and the course of peace.

In spite of the ban, the Shiites still came out during the Ashura celebration to commemorate the murder of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) but they were attacked by the people. Do you think the attack was justified?

It’s not good for people to take laws into their hands. Doing so was a mistake. The people should have just reported to the authorities, assuming that they were not aware. The authorities should have arrested and prosecuted them but not citizens of the state burning their houses and killing Shiite members. This was a mistake and it is wrong Islamically.

The attack on Shiites during the Ashura celebration did not happen in Zaria. They were limited to Kaduna, Funtua and Kano

What happened? Did the ulama preach to the youths against it?

Alhamdulilahi, we have control over our youths in Zaria unlike other areas. They don’t just wake up and take laws into their hands. If something comes up, they usually seek our advice. That was why no one was attacked in Zaria.

Critics point to the fact that the punishment that is being meted on the Shiites is not commensurate with the alleged offence of blocking roads. Don’t you think that attacking them was an over kill?

The allegation of killing them does not even arise. They blocked roads that belong to government and government officials took steps to give people free passage, after all entreaties have failed. Government has the right to take all steps necessary and when it does, there is no basis to say that they are being persecuted. But if the citizens take it upon themselves to force them out of the road, that is where the problem lies.

But do the Shiites have a history of attacking or killing people?

How many times!? They have been attacking neigbouring villages and killing people. Even last year and the year before the last, they hacked down people in Yakassai village. They did not only kill people in Sabirni, but scattered the whole town because people fled from there. They virtually took over the town.

When all these killings were happening, didn’t you alert the authorities as community leaders?

We told constituted authorities about their actions and the consequences that they pose to peace and security but their response has always been, “go and protect yourselves. We have been disallowed to confront them.” This was what they used to tell us. The people took the Shiites on, on several occasions, especially in the villages. When Abacha came to power, he intervened and took over the fight and decimated them. After Abacha’s death, they returned to their old ways of harassing people on the road, injuring and killing them, puncturing their tyres and smashing their cars’ windscreens. Days before the incident with Gen. Buratai, they had beaten up someone from Giwa and smashed his car. He reported to the police but they refused to honour the invitation of the police. The police have all their records, if you go, they will give them to you. At Gyellesu where their leader lives, they have killed countless number of people and nothing was done. Most residents of Gyellesu have fled. Are all these not human rights violations?

But the Shiites have been saying that the coming of Zakzaky to Gyellesu has brought peace to the area,  so much that Christians and other non-indigenes used to run to the place whenever there is ethno-religious crisis…

This is just a made up story. Go and ask the people of Gyellesu whether Shiites brought peace or crisis to the area. They are in a better position to answer this question.

What is the lasting solution to all these intra-religious crises?

I am calling on Muslims to strive to understand their religion. The limited knowledge of religion is the cause of all these crises. The government should also help in the propagation of genuine Islamic knowledge based on Sunnah so that people will not fall victims of a very dangerous ideology like Shiism. Secondly, people should not take the law into their hands even when provoked. They should report all acts of violations and provocations to security agents.

But some people say that the crux of the matter is that Sunni Muslims don’t   regard Shiites as Muslims. And that so long as this difference persists, there is bound to be problems. Do you agree?

The Shiites regard the prophet’s (SAW) companions as unbelievers. The say that Abubakar is an unbeliever, and that Aisha; the prophet’s wife, was adulterous. According to them, when they seized Saudi Arabia, they will exhume her corpse and meet the appropriate punishment on it. The Qur’an has already laid the issue to rest and whoever alleged that Aisha is adulterous is an unbeliever because he does not believe in the Qur’an. In fact, the Shiites do not believe in this Qur’an, they are waiting for their own Qur’an that their Mahdi will bring for them. They are just reading this Qur’an because there is no alternative. This line of thought is unbelief! Now that they regard the prophet’s companions as unbelievers, since it is not true, it means the term is true on them. Apart from prophets or messengers of Allah, there is no group of people that are as pious as the companions of the Prophet (SAW).

Zaria clash: Shi’ites withdraw from judicial panel of inquiry

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), the Shi’ites,  Tuesday announced its withdrawal from the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, even as the Commission sits Wednesday after several adjournments to investigate the December 2015 Zaria  clash between the Shi’ites, and the Nigerian Army.

Chairman of the Commission, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Garba had last Monday adjourned till Wednesday to enable the Shiites have access to their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

However, addressing the press Tuesday, legal team of the movement, led by Mr. Festus Okoye, said since they could not get access to the Shiites leader after several adjournments, they have no option than to withdraw completely from appearing before the commission, as they cannot file memorandum without hearing from Zakzaky.

Okoye said, “The legal team has resolved that in the light of the realities of lack of access,  briefing and representation for the Movement, the most honourable thing to do is to withdraw completely from appearance before the Commission in whatever form and manner and to cease any form of representation in whatever form or manner for the Movement.

“The legal team thought it could lend its support to the Movement to tell the Nigerian public and the international community its own version of the events of the 12th to 14th of December 2015 but all efforts aimed at getting proper briefing from the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria met a brick wall.

“The legal team of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria will not be used and will not allow itself to be used to legitimize a predetermined position and agenda against the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

“The Islamic Movement in Nigeria believes that the Nigerian people are entitled to know the truth of what happened in Zaria and Kaduna and will explore alternative means and avenues of letting the Nigerian people know the truth of what happened,” he said.

Corroborating Okoye’s position, the daughter of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria leader, Suhaila Ibrahim El-Zakzaky recounted her ordeal of what she described as the bloody invasion of their home by men of the Nigerian Army.

She said they were observing the early morning prayers when they gain entrance and raid the house.

According to her, “We were at home when the attacks on the Hussainniya started. It was around 10pm at night, we heard gunshots from afar. It turned out that the military were there. They were shooting at people and advancing towards the house. We spent our night with shooting going on.

“It was morning when a lot of people were performing their early morning prayers, they got the opportunity to come close to the house and that was when they eventually gain entrance to house. They killed as much people as they found. They burnt some alive. We were in the house but in the part that was not burnt down but I think they assumed that everybody was burnt. So they didn’t search. We spent the night like that.

“In the morning, I think they came to search the house to see what is there. I myself, my parents, my brothers and some other members of the movement were there when they discovered where we were hiding. They randomly shot at us for few seconds or mother. When it finally stopped, that was when we realized that my father and mother have been shot. And my three brothers have been shot dead and other people they were with. They took us away one by one. We were beaten up and taking away in trucks to the Army depot in Zaria. Since then we lost contact till date. We were detained for four days,” she narrated.
