    APC leadership apologises to Shekarau

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday apologised to the former All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, for not involving him during its visit to woo Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

APC leaders – National leader Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu; ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari; former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun and Alhaji Yusuf Alli met Shekarau in his Abuja home.

Speaking before Shekarau’s supporters in Kano, Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari said the party‘s stakeholders deemed it fit to come to Kano and explain to the ex-governor that the leadership of the party had made mistakes, which led to the latter’s absence at the Government House when the party leaders visited.

The delegation, led by Odigie-Oyegun, comprises Masari, Alli, former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Musa Gwadabe, APC Chairman (Northwest) Salisu Fagge, among others.

Yari said: “Some leadership of the party met with Mallam Shekarau in Abuja to plead with him but he insisted that they would have to come to Kano to give the apology publicly before his supporters.”

The governor said every member of the party was an asset and important to the party’s development.

Odigie-Oyegun said: “When we were in Kano last time, we were to woo aggrieved governors into our fold. We are also here to show that the leadership is not undermining the APC and its leader in Kano (Shekarau) because Kano is important to us. That is why we decided to pay this solidarity visit to move the party forward.”

He also reminded the leadership and the APC supporters to be ready to make a painful sacrifice for the challenges ahead because someone else is coming. “It is better to be a small fish in a healthy river than to be a big fish in an unhealthy river.”

The deputy governor added that when the party leadership knew there was anger in Kano, they had no option than to despatch a team to plead with the former governor.

Shekarau said: “Since the party leadership realised that they have committed a mistake and they are here to apologise to the supporters, I have no option than to accept the apology.

“Since no mortal is above mistake and with the apology coming from a powerful delegation in the national leadership, it was only godly to forgive.

“Our doors are open, we are not against anybody joining APC because we have no ill-feelings toward anyone.”

  • APC chieftain urges Shekarau to check his utterances

A  chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Dr. Baffa Babba Danangundi, has criticised former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau for his alleged statement that defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC be screened.

Danangundi, who was Shekarau’s Adviser on Youth Development, described the former governor’s utterances as uncalled for and “a bad omen to our great party, the APC”.

The Kano politician addressed reporters yesterday on his reaction to Shekarau’s position on the speculated defection of some PDP governors to the APC.

He noted that the former governor was not in a position to make such a sensitive statement on behalf of the party.

Danangundi said: “I have seen the comment by former Governor Shekarau that they, in the APC, will screen any defector from the PDP, particularly the PDP governors who fell out with the party’s leadership. My questions are: who is Mallam Shekarau to make such a statement? From where did he get the authority to speak on behalf of the APC? The APC’s spokesman, Lai Mohammed, has said the new PDP governors are highly welcome and would be inducted with red carpets, if they show their willingness to join APC. It is disturbing that Shekarau has forgotten that he has many issues to answer for from Kano people since he left office as governor in 2011.”

  • Jonathan has failed, says Shekarau

    Jonathan has failed, says Shekarau

FORMER Kano State governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, yesterday took a critical appraisal of the current administration and asked Nigerians to brace up to the challenges of unseating President Goodluck Jonathan come 2015.

Shekarau spoke just as the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, gave indications that the substantive national leaders of the party will likely emerge in January 2014.

Shekarau spoke at a conference organised by the Movement for Better Future and Democratic Emancipation Movement in Kaduna.

He said Jonathan has failed woefully and does not deserve reelection in 2015.

The former governor, who was a member of the merger committee of the APC, said: “My assessment is that the government is a total failure. It is not about projects as I have said but about the wellbeing and safety of the people”.

On the way forward, he said: “The only answer to this failure is to get the right people to do it. It is not about the rules.

“The electorates have a very big role to play because people must have a change. That is why we said that this change we are talking about in the APC is not just change of government but change of attitude and people must vote according to their belief and consciousness of accepting who will do the right thing.”

On the imperatives of the merger, he said: “We have never had merger before now but alliances and government of national unity.

“There has never been merger. We have melted into one and I think that was the biggest achievement and that is what gives Nigeria a lot of hope.”

He assured: “There is not going be any crisis because we are going to be fair to all. Everybody in the party will be free to aspire to any office.

“But I think that no matter the number of people who aspire, we are going to come out clean from it.”

Akande, who spoke through the Interim Deputy National Secretary of the party, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, disclosed that the guidelines for the harmonisation of the three parties that constitute the APC at the state levels have been released.

The committee, he said, will be announced next week.

He warned that the harmonisation committees are not executive committees but expected to hold forte for about two months and register members for the party before commencement of congresses to elect substantive leaders.

Akande assured: “Nobody will take the APC and put it in his pocket. We will have no godfathers in this party.

“All those who want to be godfathers should go the PDP. I want to appeal to you to register enmasse, pick the right people and vote for them as leaders.”

  • APC won’t be hijacked by moneybags, says ex-governor Shekarau

The All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the last election and former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau yesterday said the new opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will resist any attempt by moneybags to hijack it.

Shekarau, who is a key figure in the merger of opposition parties to form APC, said the founding members of the new party have designed it as the last hope of the masses.

He said: “It is going to be a party that will be grassroots-oriented, where the masses can have a stake. We are duty-bound to discourage moneybags from taking control of the party.”

The chairman of the ANPP merger committee told reporters in his Kano home that APC was determined to make justice and fair play its watchword.

According to him, internal democracy remains the cornerstone of the party.

He said the understanding among APC leaders, which resulted in the merger, will be pursued tirelessly to give the party a different ideological and programmes’ outlook.

Shekarau said: “Anything that will encourage bickering will not be tolerated.

“We want to be totally different from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by pursuing justice for all, building a party that will give everyone a chance to pursue his or her political ambition through the entrenchment of internal democracy to sustain peace and stability of the party. This way, the ultimate goal of unseating PDP in the next poll will be achieved.

“No individual will be allowed to hijack the party for his own goal. Every decision taken must be collective and it will be in the interest of all members and the party.”

The former governor, who also holds the title of Sardaunan Kano, dismissed allegation of sabotage levelled against former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.

He noted that Sheriff has cleared himself of those allegations.

Shekarau said: “As far as I am concerned, I cannot say yes or no over whatever allegation that have been levelled against Modu Sheriff. This is because I don’t know the minds of members of the party.

“I believe all the major players are solidly with us. But that does not mean we may not see some funny development. For now, there’s no reason to panic.”

On his likely position in the APC executive, Shekarau explained that as a loyal party man, he would offer to serve in any capacity the party deems fit.

The former governor dispelled the speculation that the APC leadership will emerge soon, going by the cumbersome process it is undergoing.

  • APC will rid Nigeria of corruption, other vices – Shekarau

APC will rid Nigeria of corruption, other vices – Shekarau

A former presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, has said the newly formed All Progressive Congress (APC) will rid the country of corruption and other social vices.

He stated that the party, which comprised “people of like minds,” will chart a new course for Nigeria and her citizens.

Shekarau spoke at the induction and investiture ceremony of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, at the weekend.

The event was organized to formally usher in the new national president of the body, Major. Gen. Umaru Usman (rtd) and his deputy, Mr. Frank Nneji, who were elected in May last year.

Besides Usman and Nneji, several others, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Adeseyi Sijuwade, an engineer, were also inducted into the body.

“The APC has been defined in several quarters as ‘Armoured Personnel Carrier’ which has come to dismantle every elements of corruption in the land. It will breathe new life into our society and send packing those that had stalled our progress both as a nation and as citizens, “he said amidst a chorus of laughter from the gathering.

However, the former Kano State governor, refused to disclose the strategies the party will adopt in ridding the country of graft.

“Wait until the manifesto of APC is out, after that we will tell Nigerians how we are going to wage war against corruption in the land,” he said.

On the prevailing insecurity in the land, the ANPP stalwart said: “We shall be addressing this soonest. I don’t want to pre-empt the manifesto and the priority of APC.

“These are issues that are very relevant and central to our concern and efforts. We are going to address this very seriously. It is not going to be business as usual and we are not going to give Nigerians old wine in new bottles; it is going to be new drinks in new bottles.

“And concerning the security problem in Kano, I don’t think it is fair to isolate the security problem of that state, as we are talking about something that is affecting the whole nation. Nigeria is being threatened security wise; it is the responsibility of every citizen. It is no longer the issue of government or security agencies. It is the responsibility of every citizen to be law abiding and vigilant.

“80 per cent of security depends on information, unless the citizens are up and doing, nobody should sit back home and wait to be protected. We must sit up and be part and parcel of the arrangement and of course we challenge the government also to sit up.

“At APC, we will be rolling out our programme to deal with the situation. The committee will make recommendation; I am sure what they will bring in and address some of these issues that will turn things around for the best.”

  • Why APC will succeed – Shekarau

Why APC will succeed – Shekarau

Former presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Friday said the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last 15 years has helped to strengthen peoples’ faith in the new party – the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Shekarau, who spoke in a chat with journalists in Benin City, said they are waiting for whatever moles the PDP would plant in the merger.

The former Kano State governor said leaders of the various political parties that formed the APC have decided to sacrifice their personal wish for the interest of the nation.

He said the merger was not about any individual or personality but about the Nigeria people and giving the people an alternative.

Shekarau said, “I think to the best of my knowledge and understanding all the people you may think have ambition in all the political parties involved are all ready to sacrifice and play the game of give and take.

“We are waiting for the unexpected and we are planning for it. There is no way you can stop peoples’ ambition in any political party.”

  • Kwakwanso, Shekarau, others renew rivalry over governorship seat

Kwakwanso, Shekarau, others renew rivalry over governorship seat

For Kano State Governor, Musa Kwakwanso and his predecessor, Ibrahim Shekarau, the year 2015 presents another opportunity to test their might on the political battlefield.

It is no longer news that the two politicians have not been the best of friends, at least politically. Their rivalry dated back to the early 2000, during Kwakwanso’s first stint as governor from 1999 to2003, after he reportedly demoted Shekarau from the position of permanent secretary in the state civil service to a school principal over alleged insubordination.

Within a spate of three years, Shekarau, who many had thought was down and out, contested the 2003 governorship election against his former boss on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and to the surprise of everyone, had a relatively easy victory at the polls.

Many Kano indigenes had attributed his victory to two factors: fate and the ability to connect with the average man on the streets, who regard Shekarau as incorruptible and ‘one of our own’.

On his part, Kwakwanso, following his loss, simply moved on. An ally of the then president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, he was appointed to the powerful portfolio of the Minister of Defense, a position he held for about four years.

From 2003 to 2011, Shekarau held forte as governor, enjoying a near cult-like status in the state. It is also on record that he was the first Kano State governor to serve two consecutive terms in office.

However, his desire to handover to a trusted ally, Suleiman Fakai, failed to materialize, as Kwakwanso, who had retreated from the political scene, and whom many had also written off politically, staged a comeback to win the 2011 governorship election.

Fakai’s loss dealt a major blow to Shekarau’s rising political fortune. It was indeed two huge losses in a row, with the former governor, who had earlier been picked as the presidential candidate of the ANPP coming a distant fourth in the race.

Presently in Kano State, one recurring topic of discussion among political stakeholders is the likely entry of Kwakwanso into the presidential race. The governor, sources disclosed, has allegedly confided in a few close aides that he may give the presidency a shot in 2015, having come to the conclusion that there is nothing more for him to prove in the state politics.

Reports that Kwakwanso could join the race for the 2015 presidency, The Nation gathered, may have cleared the coast for top politicians in the state to begin early preparations on who takes over the Kano Government House.

This development, according to a member of the House of Representatives who prefers to remain anonymous, will renew the intense political rivalry between the governor, who is yet to anoint any aspirant, and his predecessor. Shekarau, who, it was learnt, is still firmly in control of the structures of ANPP in Kano State and may support the candidacy of Fakai once again in 2015.

Fakai, the Commissioner for Local Government in Shekarau’s cabinet, according to sources, has remained loyal to the former governor despite the latter being out of office.

For some ANPP members who are not disposed to Fakai flying the ANPP ticket, they are, however, rooting for Alhaji Kabiru Gaya, a serving two-term senator and former governor of the state between 1999 and 1993.

They cite his level-headedness and broad appeal as his strong points, adding that while he has remained loyal to the party, he remains arguably, the only man in ANPP with the clout and stature to give any candidate put forward by the ruling party a run for his money.

Other names being bandied around within the political circles as nursing governorship ambition include first term senator, Bashir Lado Garba, four-term member of the House of Representaives, Farouk Lawan, governorship candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), in the 2011 elections, Lawal Ja’faru Isa and Ibrahim Abacha.

Garba, a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was elected into the Senate in 2011. The young man, who is in his mid-40’s, proved with his election that he has come of age in politics, as he defeated heavyweights to clinch the PDP ticket and in the general elections.

Though he has not declared intention to contest the governorship, there are unconfirmed speculations that quite a number of political and traditional elites are putting pressures on Garba to give the race a shot.

One major factor believed to be working in his favour is his closeness to the power bases in the state, in addition to his non-controversial image. And according to insiders, finance will surely not be an issue for the senator if he decides to throw his hat into the ring.

Quite wealthy in his own right, Garba, a big player in the oil and gas sector before his foray into politics, is also a nephew of the Abacha family, who sources allege, still controls huge financial wherewithal.

Until he got embroiled in the fuel subsidy probe bribe scandal, Lawan in the opinion of not a few PDP members in Kano State was a governor-in-waiting. Reports had it that the lawmaker was prevailed upon to step down for Kwakwanso in 2011, and had actually been assured of the governorship ticket in 2015.

But for his political associates, his alleged involvement in a bribe scandal may not negatively affect his governorship after all. “Has he been found guilty of the bribe scandal,” asked one of his loyalists. “Until that happens, Lawan remains the leading governorship aspirant in Kano PDP.”

Also likely to join the race is Kwakwanso’s deputy, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. An ardent loyalist of his boss, it remains unclear if the governor will throw his weight behind him when the chips are down.

Despite his unsuccessful attempt last year, Jafaru Isa, a retired Brigadier General, The Nation gathered, still has his eyes on the coveted seat. The former military administrator secured the CPC ticket in a bitter contest with Ibrahim Abacha, a situation which left the party badly fractured culminating in its dismal showing at the polls.

Perhaps except himself and his coterie of supporters, not many people are giving Isa any chance to spring a surprise. According to sources, apart from the fact that his party structures in the state remains weak and uncoordinated, the retired one-star army general lacks the financial war chest to prosecute a governorship campaign.
