    Kienka predicts rousing Shell/NNPC Tennis Tournament final

    The 2025 edition of the Shell/NNPC Tennis Tournament has entered the crucial stages and some of the main actors are fast looking at their chances to clinch the title.

    One of them is Godwin Kienka, competing in the Veteran singles category of the ongoing competition, taking place at tennis courts of Ikoyi Club 1938.

    Kienka, the Director of International Tennis Academy and also a former International Tennis Federation bagged Umpire, is the defending champion of this annual event in his cadre.

    “It is a highly competitive event every year and Ikoyi Club Tennis section has done well to retain the event just as  the sponsors are still there as partners,” Kienka said.  “I am in the finals again and I look up to an exciting game against a familiar opponent.

    “This year has been very hot because more players emerged on the favourites’ list and so the semis kept a lot of spectators at the edge of their seats,” he noted.

    Edet Akpaso is the opponent of Kienka in the Veteran Singles final billed for Saturday.

    Today, the Super Veterans semis will be decided just as the Men Singles B semifinal games will also take place at the tennis courts of Ikoyi Club.

    Dominic Icha will take on Vincent Essien just as Oluwole Fajobi and Abiodun Adepoju will tango for a ticket to play in the final on Saturday.

    Captain of Ikoyi Club Tennis Section, Ehiz Uwague, is excited about the standard of the ongoing event.

    He expressed optimism about the finals slated for Saturday, saying it will be highly explosive in all categories.

    Shell/NNPC Tennis Tournament in full swing at Ikoyi Club

    The 2025 Shell/NNPC Tennis Tournament which started at the Ikoyi Club 1938 on Thursday last week enters full swing today.

    In this edition, over 80 players are competing for honours across various categories. The players are competing in the Male singles divided into A and B, Ladies singles, Veteran Singles, Super Veteran Singles and the Team event.

    The club’s Tennis Section Captain, Ehiz Uwague, at the weekend noted that there were high expectations for the upcoming rounds beginning from today.

    “The matches will be intense now and we expect standout performances from the players. As the group matches progress, I anticipate even more gripping encounters, with players pushing their limits to secure a spot in the final rounds,” Uwagwe said.

    So far, the Shell/NNPC tennis Tournament has seen some thrilling matches, including Stephen Ezeagu’s comeback victory and Uwague’s hard-fought win.

    Matches to be decided between today and Wednesday will put spectators on the edge of their seats as many of the players on parade in this edition are in top form.

    In some of the matches to be played tonight, N. Etomi will take on J. Ojo, O. Oluwawenimo will clash with L. Talabi, while E. Adebayo and E. Ejehi will fight for a ticket to the next round just as Kallada Kienka take on O. Oti. In other fixtures, its E. Uwague Vs. A. Farinu, P. Udoetuk Vs. H. Etomi and A. Mustafa Vs. M.Sule. The team event will follow the singles matches later in the day as Tennis Section will play against Badminton section while Swimming and Squash section will compete for honours in the Red Group. In the Blue Group, it’s Billiard Snooker versus  Aerobics Section and Table Tennis Section versus Golf Section

    The tournament ends on May 10.
