Customs shelves old vehicle duty collection plan

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Comptroller-General Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) has bowed to pressure from the Senate, announcing suspension of the proposed vehicle duty payment.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the NCS Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joseph Attah, said: “Following the unnecessary tension generated as a result of misconception and misrepresentation of the Nigeria Customs Service planned motor duty payment, the leadership of the National Assembly and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd), met with a view to resolving the impasse.

“They both agreed that the proposed motor duty payment, though in line with the provision of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap C.45, LFN 2004, should be put on hold while the Senate Committee on Customs & Excise interfaces with the NCS for further discussions.

“While payment of duty on vehicles or indeed any dutiable imported item remains a civic responsibility of every patriotic Nigerian, NCS management has directed that the exercise be put on hold while expressing readiness to engage the Senate Committee on further discussions to bring them on board to understand the importance of the exercise to national security and economy.”

    Kwairanga shelves retirement plan

Gombe United legend Alhaji Kwairanga has postponed his retirement plan to boost the club’s quick return to the top flight.

The one-club man had earlier announced his retirement after spending his entire career at the club.

“I want to ensure Gombe United returns to the Glo Premier League before leaving the stage in 2016. I will play in the lower division this term. We can build on the quality of players in the team. The bulk of the team is intact and that’s what we need to stage a comeback,” he told supersport.com.

Kwairanga applauded the decision of the club to retain former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen as head coach.

“We have Eguavoen whose presence in the dugout remains an advantage,” he said to supersport.com.

Gombe United will campaign in the Nigerian National League (NNL) following their relegation from the elite class.

  • Ohanaeze faction shelves election

A faction of the Igbo apex cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday shelved the election it had scheduled for today in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to pick its executives council.

This was sequel to an injunction handed down by an Enugu State High Court restraining the faction from proceeding with the election.

Former secretary of the election committee of Ohanaeze, Prince Richard Ozobu, told reporters that the election had been postponed indefinitely.

He said although he had not been served the court papers, he only read about the injunction in the newspapers.

“After reading it, I made consultations and the popular opinion is to shelve the election and respect the court order,” said Ozobu.

He apologized to the “numerous delegates who have arrived Ebonyi for the election and pleaded with them to show respect for the rule of law and due process.

He said he was working towards vacating the injunction, adding that as soon as that was done, the election would go on.

However, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu who was elected at last Saturday’s election by one of the factions in Enugu, said yesterday that there was no crisis in Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

He said some ‘interests’ are “colouring the emerging impasse with the infusion of cash for media grandstanding.”

Nwaorgu who spoke to The Nation requested Ndigbo to resolve internal issues within the ambits of the organization.

He spoke on the last election, saying: “The elections were successfully concluded and the new executive council was inaugurated and sworn in by no less a personality than a retired Chief Judge of Enugu State and first president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Justice Ezebuilo Ozobu.”
