  • ‘Woe to the shepherds…’

The good book, the Holy Bible, never stops to fascinate: its eternal truths, its lucid language and wry humour. From age to age, the message remains the same and man is in parts, sometimes portrayed as a clown fooling around on his own stage.

The good book is particularly unsparing of some self-styled men of God: the chief priests, the prophets, the shepherds and the rulers. At every turn through many portions of the book, men of God are set up for especial tanning and savaging. Of course, it is the Lord himself speaking and laying down His statutes for those who elect to step forward and lead the flock.

Let’s pick one quick example from the book of the great prophet Ezekiel (chapter 34): “And the word of God came to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherd feed the flocks? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who are sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost…So they were scattered because there was no shepherd;…”

And indeed Hardball would not deign to publish the stated repercussions for irresponsible shepherds but they are all there; all through the good book, the Author has laid down the terms of engagement quite clearly for those who have ears.

But as we have seen, especially in our country recently, our modern day leaders and shepherds do not only feed themselves, many seem to feed on the flock. They install themselves sole owners and near-gods and they make the flock worship them.

They do not only compete with kings, they live like emperors and create paradise of their own here on earth; completely repudiating the mansions above.

It is a stale story you might say, but just recently, a General Overseer of one of those churches just unveiled a customised Rolls Royce Phantom that would be worth no less than N50 million.

As the story goes, he turned 50 years and his flock considered it worthy to mark the GO’s golden age with this exquisite automobile, often the plaything of Hollywood stars and oil sheikhs. And why not, if it is good for worldly sheikhs it is even better for the GO, after all our God is not a poor God. Besides, what is a mere Rolls in an age big boy GOs cruise multiple private jets.

But the question is: if indeed the congregation raised this cash, where from? And does it not matter to the Man of God, whether such hefty cash was from graft or witchcraft?

Anyway, no matter, the author of the Good book who had long  foretold such wayward behaviour as purchase of Rolls Royce and private jets by his ‘shepherds’ says that in due time, he would redeem his flock and judge those feeding on them. Yes, so He decreed.

  • Leadership tussle: CCC elders, Shepherds rally support for Olatoso

Leadership tussle: CCC elders, Shepherds rally support for Olatoso

Elders of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) have rallied  round their “unification”leader, Rev Olatoso Matthew Oshoffa, asking members to support him.

They said Olatoso was “divinely ordained.”

In a statement yesterday, Senior Evangelist Adeola Emmanuel and Senior Evangelist Johnson Olakunle, said the church could not move forward without a divinely anointed leader who will take it to another height.

The statement reads: “Following the unfortunate judgment of the Ilaro High Court which terminated the leadership of our former Pastor, Reverend Emmanuel Oshoffa, our great church had been without headship and this is not healthy for the church.

“Now that the Lord in His goodness has chosen a new leader for His church in the person of Reverend Olatoso Matthew Oshoffa, we should bury our differences and embrace him for the benefit of all.”

The elders said God’s will must be done for the church to move forward, noting that in the last 12 years, it has not made progress.

Rev Oshoffa has promised to, among others, build a cathedral at the church’s Imeko, Ogun State headquarter; saying the project will be completed in five years.

  • A gathering of shepherds

    A gathering of shepherds

The Good Shepherd Society of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral has celebrated its 43rd anniversary at the Rotary Club Hall, Ikeja, Lagos. SAFIYYAH ABDUR-RAZAQ reports

The Rotary Club Hall in G. R. A. Ikeja was decorated in green and white, with blue spring lights. The high table glittered against a silver backdrop. The chairs and tables were also decorated in white and green. The tables had white and yellow overlays.

It was for the reception of the 43rd anniversary of the Good Shepherd Society of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral.

Members of the society trooped into the hall after a thanksgiving service and rededication of 21 new members at the nearby Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral. They were all dressed in white and green.

Their President, Mr Ossie Nwankwu congratulated the new members on their rededication, saying he looked forward to the light they would re-ignite in the society.

The event Chairman, Mr Femi Olutayo, praised the members for their good work saying: “You have been wonderful, futuristic and sharp but you have to step out of the convenience zone to become good shepherds. You have gotten to the point where, am sure,  God has seen your society and you need to step out to the world”, he said.

Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah spoke on moving forward as good shepherds, urging the members to always give so as to make the fellowship move forward and receive God’s blessings.

“Giving out is a sign of your trust in God. Put all your trust in Him. Allow Him to use you for all He wants Good Shepherd Society to do” Ogah said.

The other guest speaker, Mr Emeka Madubuike, also urged them to always give out in order to fulfil God’s assignment. He highlighted 10 points that would assist them in moving forward as good shepherds. He said: “You have to help those in need, pray for your flock when they are struggling, strengthen your flock when they are weak, lift them up up when they are down, encourage them, give hope to them when they are hopeless, forgive them when they hurt you, rejoice with them when they are succeeding, do not publicise their faults and lead an exemplary life for them to emulate.”

Oxbridge College proprietor Dr Femi Ogunsanya proprosed the toast. She said: “We have made good progress but a lot still needs to be done. Rejoice Good Shepherd Society for you have succeeded.” The president, his secretary and those on the high table cut the white and green cake with red and green  flowers on it.

Guests were treated to music and sumptuous lunch.

Nwankwu told The Nation he was elated at the success of the event.

“After the amount of time that went into the planning, and having people turn up, I am so happy. Our guests were here and it was fun. We heard the word of God from different people; it was really enjoyable”, he said.

He urged members to live up to the name of a good shepherd.

“A good shepherd does not mean any other thing than being a good neighbour. If your neighbour is in distress, pay attention and help. Lend your shoulder for people to cry on. One thing I learnt today is that offering subdues suffering. When you give, you would be given back. When you lend your shoulder for people to lean on, God would provide one for you. To the new members especially, as they are coming with new fresh ideas to move the society forward, all of us should rededicate ourselves to moving this society forward and to living the name of Good Shepherd in our everyday life”, Mr Nwankwu said.

The chairman of the anniversary committee, Mr Evans Okeke, urged members to live up to Christ’s attitude as a good shepherd and to put to practice all they learnt at the event.
