Oborevwori: Raising the bar of governance

    By Jackson Ekwugum

Gradually but steadily, many are now coming to terms with the unique leadership skills and patriotic fervour of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State. All the misconceptions, misinformation, and falsehood that were concocted about him by his traducers and naysayers are now giving way to the sudden realisation that Oborevwori is a classic study in governance with his unswerving sense of mission and determined strides. Because he is not one to hug the limelight or engage in needless political grandstanding, many, perhaps understandably, misconstrued his self-effacing mien and grassroots approach to politics and governance to be a sign of weakness, or inability to grasp the complexities of modern statecraft. But after 19 months on the saddle, it is becoming increasingly clear that Oborevwori is a masterclass in leadership.

Evidence of his rising profile as a national political leader was on full display last December during the marriage ceremony of his son in Asaba. Political heavyweights across the political divide made their presence felt with their obvious enthusiasm and delight. The list of attendees included President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his vice, Shettima (both represented by aviation minister, Festus Keyamo), governors, National Assembly members, ministers, and business tycoons in the likes of Tony Elumelu and Gabriel Ogbechie. Not to forget of course, Oborevwori’s predecessor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The event spoke volumes of Governor Oborevwori’s ability to forge friendships and build synergy across board for the purposes of a stable polity and good governance, a fact that was eloquently attested to by the president in describing Governor Oborevwori as “a bridge builder and model political leader.” Such a profound validation coming from the president and leader of the ruling APC is a tacit endorsement of the governor’s trademark humility, and bi-partisan approach to governance that prioritises the interests and well-being of the citizens above any partisan or parochial considerations. It is to be said that Oborevwori is quietly emerging as a potent political force on the national stage.

Even at home, notable political actors are taking note and, even if subdued, are weighing in on the governor’s character, leadership prowess, and achievements so far. Senator Peter Nwaoboshi was recently quoted by a blogger thus: “…I know Sheriff as a humble, fearless, and respectful young man who does not fall for pressure.” In truth, that is the paradox that is Governor Oborevwori. Humble yet fearless. Tough but tender hearted. Audacious, yet respectful. Blunt but empathetic. In a viral Facebook post and, obviously, in veiled reference to Governor Oborevwori, Felix Tony Nwaka, former commissioner in the state, alluded to the enigma that is Oborevwori. Titled, “WHAT IF HE TURNS OUT THE BEST,” Nwaka waxed poetic:

“He appears focused on his assignment. What if he delivers on the job? What if he surpasses all his predecessors? Could this be the man we’ve all been waiting for? All the while we searched afar, he lay humbly at our feet. The gold that is covered with mud. Not as glorious as his forebears, but exudes a curious calm dignity. Is he the one appointed to take us to unprecedented heights of distinction? Could it be we are about to experience again the good old days? When we were the envy of all. When our exceptional exploits, powered by a united force, resounded at the farthest reaches imaginable. Who knows? You never can tell. Sometimes the expectations of man are at variance with cosmic constructions. Indeed, God works in mysterious ways. What can mortal do but to watch his reign and await the judgement of posterity?”

As I finalised this piece, elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark delivered a resounding verdict. “Governor Oborevwori,” he emphatically declared, “has achieved remarkable progress in development and democracy enhancement in Delta State. I urge him to continue undistracted, ensuring that no community is left behind.” Hardly surprising, therefore, that Oborevwori is among the four nominees for Governor of the Year award by Arise Television and ThisDay newspaper.

These encomiums are pouring in as Governor Oborevwori last week commenced his state-wide inspection and monitoring of projects in the state. A rigorous exercise that will take him and his team to all the ongoing projects in the 25 local government areas of the state, it brought to the fore the governor’s relentless drive for excellence and passion for unrivalled service delivery. Even more significantly, it showcased the governor’s acclaimed street credibility. Touring projects in Asaba Capital Territory and environs, the contractors and site engineers were astounded by the governor’s understanding of the construction processes and attention to details.

He came with his measuring tape to assess the exact size of the formworks on drainages to ensure they were in line with the approved designs. He could take one look at the rods being used on some of the sites and tell the contractor that they were using the wrong materials for the job. Each time, he was proved right. No surprises there, for long before he was thrust into the dizzying heights of public service, Oborevwori was a successful businessman with wide ranging interests in construction, real estate, and oil and gas. Most of the contractors and site supervisors were left rueing their bad luck as the governor expressed his displeasure and directed that the right materials be used at their own costs. And for good measure, two state officials are facing sanctions for issuing certificates and facilitating payment for uncompleted projects.

The first two days of the inspection exercise revealed two things. First, Governor Oborevwori means business; he is not to be trifled with when it comes to delivering quality and excellent jobs. As he stressed at the press interview at the end of day two, he was not out to put up a “media show.” He simply wants the jobs done and done to specification. Nothing more. Nothing less. Oborevwori’s undiluted passion for excellence reflects in everything he does and he wants to see that translated into every project in the state. Secondly, he is not fazed by the rigours and inconveniences of inspecting every ongoing project in the state. Gifted with a voracious appetite for work, it was evident that Oborevwori is irrevocably committed to ensuring that Deltans get full value from every naira spent.

The governor’s only distress comes from our national penchant to cut corners and maximise profit at the expense of the public good. His pain was palpable as he lamented that indigenous contractors were “majorly” culpable in this regard. Hence, his patriotic appeal to all and sundry to embrace the timeless values of honesty, transparency, accountability, contentment, and love for country and state.

The message from the governor was clear: let us all be the change that we want to see in society.

Christmas: Delta governor urges Nigerians to embrace unity, national progress

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to reflect on the deeper meaning of the festive season, urging them to prioritise unity and national progress over celebrations.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori extended warm Christmas wishes to all Deltans and Nigerians, encouraging them to use the season as an opportunity to foster love, peace, and harmony.

He emphasized the importance of setting aside primordial divisions and working collectively to advance the nation, underscoring the essence of Christmas as a time to celebrate unity and shared purpose.

“Christmas is a reminder to embrace love and peace, focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us,” the governor remarked.

Governor Oborevwori urged citizens to reflect on the teachings of Jesus Christ, using them as a guide to build a stronger, more inclusive society.

“Christmas is not just a time for merriment; it is a season of reflection and renewal,” the governor remarked.

He added, “it reminds us of the boundless love and selflessness that Jesus Christ demonstrated during his time on Earth.

“As we celebrate this season, I urge all Deltans to embody these virtues in their daily lives by fostering unity, peace, and understanding across our state and the nation.”

Governor Oborevwori urged Christians to use the occasion to pray fervently for a more peaceful and united Delta State and Nigeria.

He said, “our nation is at a critical juncture. But with collective prayers, determination, and hard work, we can overcome the challenges we face and emerge stronger.”

The governor also reassured the people of Delta State of his administration’s unwavering commitment to actively sustain their welfare.

Reflecting on the progress made during the year, he expressed gratitude for the prevailing peace in the state, which, he noted, had laid the foundation for sustainable development.

He said; “my administration is dedicated to pursuing people-oriented policies and programmes that will improve the standard of living for all Deltans.

“As we approach 2025, I assure you of better days ahead. Our focus remains on equitable development, job creation, and fostering an environment where every Deltan can thrive.

“With the collaborative efforts of our government and citizens, we will continue to grow, innovate, and create opportunities for all.”

Governor Oborevwori extended his warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to Deltans and Nigerians, saying, “May the joy of this season fill your homes, and may the coming year bring renewed hope, prosperity, and fulfillment for all.”

Oborevwori: Championing quality healthcare for Deltans

    By Festus Ahon

In a nation where citizens’ well-being often takes the back seat to other political priorities, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has distinguished himself as a leader committed to making quality health care accessible and affordable for all Deltans and residents.

Since assuming office, Governor Oborevwori has focused on ensuring that Deltans, regardless of their socio-economic status, have access to quality healthcare. This commitment is embedded in his “MORE Agenda,” which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Quality healthcare remains a pivotal pillar of the MORE Agenda, as the governor recognizes that a healthy population is the  sure foundation of  sustainable societal stability and economic prosperity. His administration’s bold reforms in the health sector reflect a clear understanding of its challenges and the urgent need for enduring effective solutions.

    Strengthening Primary Healthcare

Governor Oborevwori’s administration has prioritised strengthening primary healthcare, the cornerstone of any robust health system. Substantial investments have been made to renovate and equip primary healthcare centres across Delta’s 25 local government areas.

These efforts have brought functional healthcare facilities closer to under-served communities, ensuring basic medical services are readily available.

The administration has equipped these centres with essential medications and qualified healthcare personnel, providing much-needed services  such as antenatal care, immunizations, and treatment of common illnesses.

Special emphasis has been placed on maternal and child health care, with a marked increase in access to skilled birth attendants and antenatal services. These initiatives have significantly reduced the maternal mortality rate and improved health outcomes for women and children, fostering trust in the state’s public health systems.

    Upgrading Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare

The Oborevwori’s administration has equally made strides in improving secondary and tertiary healthcare systems. General hospitals and tertiary health institutions such as the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, have undergone significant upgrades.

Modern medical equipment, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, CT scanners, and dialysis units, have been acquired to improve the quality of specialized care available in the state.

In addition, the administration has addressed the perennial issue of brain drain by actively recruiting and training medical personnel. By offering competitive remuneration and creating a conducive work environment, Delta State is becoming an attractive destination for healthcare professionals, reversing the trend of talent migration.

    Establishment of health institutions

Governor Oborevwori’s vision for an integrated healthcare and education system has led to the establishment of two landmark institutions: the College of Health Technology in Ovrode and the College of Health Sciences at Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state. These colleges aim to address the critical shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, while positioning Delta State as a hub for medical education, and services.

    College of Health Technology, Ovrode

This institution focuses on training mid-level healthcare professionals, including community health workers, laboratory technicians, and environmental health officers. Its establishment is a significant step toward capacity building, improved healthcare access, and youth empowerment.

Equipped with modern lecture halls, laboratories, and hostels, the college offers world-class education and practical training with modern healthcare facilities. It provides young people with skills in high-demand fields, reducing unemployment and contributing to the state’s socio-economic development.

College of Health Sciences, Southern Delta University, Ozoro

The College of Health Sciences is a centre for advanced medical education and research, offering degree programmes in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Medical Laboratory Science. The institution focuses on producing healthcare professionals equipped to address both local and global health challenges.

This initiative aims to curb brain drain by providing high-quality medical education within the state. It also enhances the quality of care in tertiary hospitals and specialist centres, while attracting students, researchers and funding from across the country. This positions Delta State as a leader in healthcare and education innovation.

Universal health coverage through the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC)

Another cornerstone of Governor Oborevwori’s health policy is the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), designed to ensure that every Deltan has  easier access to affordable healthcare. This initiative provides coverage for routine checkups, major medical procedures, and care for vulnerable groups, including children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly.

By December 2024, over 2.4 million residents—more than 40% of Delta State’s population—had enrolled in the DSCHC, making it a leader in health insurance in Nigeria. The scheme’s success is bolstered by subsidies, partnerships with donor agencies, and the introduction of specialized plans like the Equity Health Plan, which offers free care to vulnerable populations.

    Addressing public health challenges

The Oborevwori’s administration has also tackled pressing public health issues such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases. Through awareness campaigns, free testing and treatment programmes, and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets, significant progress has been made in combating these diseases.

Governor Oborevwori has equally demonstrated exceptional leadership in health emergencies. His administration has mobilized resources, set up isolation centers, and deployed rapid response teams, underscoring a steadfast commitment to protecting lives.

As Delta Wins $400,000 Bill & Melinda Gates PHC Award

In recognition of its strides in primary healthcare, Delta State recently won a $400,000 award at the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge, organized by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and UNICEF.

The award highlights the impact of Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, particularly his approval for the renovation of over 150 primary healthcare centers. According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the governor’s dedication to revamping the healthcare sector was pivotal to earning the prestigious recognition.

    Promoting preventive healthcare

Governor Oborevwori understands the importance of preventive healthcare in reducing the burden on the healthcare system. His administration has launched various health education programmes, promoting healthy lifestyles, proper sanitation, and early disease detection. Community outreach programmes and health fairs have become regular features, bringing free health services and information directly to residents.

    The Road Ahead

While significant progress has been made, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and the need for more skilled personnel, remain. However, Governor Oborevwori’s clear vision, strategic policies and determination are helping to  lay a solid foundation for a sustainable healthcare system in Delta State.

His administration’s focus on both health and education ensures that Delta State not only produces skilled professionals but also fosters leaders who will shape the future of healthcare.

The positive ripple effects of these initiatives on the state’s healthcare system, economy and overall societal well-being will cement Governor Oborevwori’s legacy as a visionary leader.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s prioritization of the health sector is a testament to his belief that  quality health is enduring wealth. Through strategic investments, innovative policies, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Deltans, his administration is fostering a healthier, more productive society.  Fortunately, the strides made so far are just the beginning of a transformative journey that will benefit generations to come.

  • Oborevwori on course in Delta, says Izeze

Oborevwori on course in Delta, says Izeze

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, Thursday, said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was fulfilling his electoral promise of bringing  meaningful development to citizens of the state.

The commissioner disclosed this during his inspection of 1.192km internal roads comprising Benjamin Osaragbaje, Orhorhor Road, Orhorhor link road and Chechester Road in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area.

Izeze said the construction of the roads was a fulfillment of the meaningful development plank of the MORE Agenda that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori promised Deltans.

According to him, “Governor Oborevwori promised that he would be a governor for all.

“True to his words, he had visited this road during the Christmas holidays in 2023 and saw its sorry state. Thereafter, he informed us of his intention to rehabilitate the entire stretch.

“As at today, the drains have been completed, the binder and the friction course are being applied, the roads, as they are, just require desilting of the drains and then the road marking for commissioning.

“This is another evidence of a promise kept; he has kept the promise he made to the people of this neighbourhood when he visited in December, 2023.

“On behalf of the people of Sapele and all residents within this area, I thank Governor Oborevwori for keeping his promise to them, while also thanking the residents of this environment for giving our engineers and the contractor a peaceful work environment throughout the duration of this project.

“It is our hope that now that they have drains that are channelled to discharge into the river, they will do their own part by ensuring that these drains are maintained.

“They should ensure the drains remain clean so that they can serve the purpose for which they were intended and not to become a mosquito pond because the residents dump all their refuse into the drains.”

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done, adding that; “I can tell, having gone around with Engineers from our Departments of the Ministry of Works, that, indeed, it meets the requirements of the Bill of Engineering Measurements and Evaluation and the Bill of Quantities.”

A resident of the area, Chief Apolo Osaragbaje, said the road had been impassable, especially during the rainy season, due to flooding and

thanked Governor Oborevwori for approving the construction of the internal roads.

His words, “I must thank Governor Sheriff Oborevwori a ‘talk and do’ Governor for approving the construction of the roads when he visited me.

“I made the request to him after a few weeks (of him being in office) and was not even expecting a reply because he has several requests and demands but suddenly I found an expatriate contractor, Niger Cat, and, to that

extent, I will name Governor Oborevwori ‘a talk and do’ Governor.

“The Governor has done a great job which is comparable to what Ogbemudia did around Sapele in 1972 and I appreciate the contractor he brought; they did a fine job and finished the job they were told to do.

“I am quite happy, on behalf of the neighbourhood; the road spans not just my road where I live, but there are adjoining roads to make it more motorable and more beautiful. I express my appreciation and my thanks to him immensely on behalf of the community.

“Today, Governor Oborevwori has done a good job not only in Sapele; I read in the newspapers the whole three senatorial districts of Delta state are all are being carried along and he has improved our living condition”.

  • Oborevwori and barrier breaking of Urhobo Nation

Oborevwori and barrier breaking of Urhobo Nation

    • By Festus Ahon

History was made last Saturday when the Urhobo nation gathered at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, to induct Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, into the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU (Worldwide) Hall of Fame. This landmark event made him the first Governor of Urhobo extraction to receive this prestigious honour.

In addition, the Governor, caught by surprise, achieved another historic first by being honoured by the Urhobo Traditional Rulers’ Council, led by the revered Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe 1. At the ceremony, he was also honoured as the Omorotomo of Urhoboland (a worthy child). This marked the first time the Urhobo nation collectively organized a grand reception to celebrate one of their own.

His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orowhedor Oborevwori, now holds the distinction of being the first Urhobo Governor to be decorated by his people in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the governance of Delta State, just eighteen months into his administration.

The importance of this honour can only be deeply appreciated when one understands that the UPU, the foremost socio- Cultural organization of the Urhobos worldwide, was celebrating its 93rd Urhobo National Day as one of the oldest and most prestigious Socio- Cultural Unions in Nigeria.

The Urhobo ethnic Nationality is the sixth largest in Nigeria and the most populous in Delta State, occupying eight local government areas in Delta Central and sharing two local government areas with the Ijaws and Itsekiris in Warri South and Patani Local Government Areas, respectively in Delta South.

The UPU, an embodiment of Urhobo culture and tradition, has branches all over the world and reserves its honours to only the most distinguished of its members.

The decoration and honour of Rt Hon Oborevwori by the UPU and the Council of Urhobo Traditional Rulers was not just for its funfare as Governor Oborevwori has made the Urhobo nation and Deltans at large proud in just about 18 months in office with a trail of achievements behind him.

The President -General of the UPU, Chief Ese Gam Owe, in his remarks at the event, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the massive infrastructural development across the state.

Owe said: “A time like this presents an opportunity for stock taking. But let us start with you. Your Excellency, we thank you for your MORE AGENDA. Today, our Urhobo Nation now breathes a new lease of life.

“The massive road construction projects, here and there, particularly the ongoing Julius Berger embarked Bridges and Roads expansion construction at Effurun and Warri, is a thing of joy to all discerning eyes. We are grateful to you, for these

long-lasting legacies that you have brought forth to our dear Urhobo Nation.

“Apart from the above is the Delta State Health Insurance Scheme

that is in place, courtesy of Your Excellency’s Government.

“I understand that other areas of Delta State are equally filling the positive impact of this your Administration. I am told and I verily believe, that Government Workers now smile home before the end of each month as their salaries are paid promptly. We thank you for all of these.”

Governor Oborevwori in his remarks, thanked the Urhobo nation for the honours bestowed on him, adding that he would not take the honours, which he described as a show of love, for granted.

While saying he would not disappoint the Urhobo nation and all other Deltans at large, he solicited for more and continued support of the people for his administration.

The Governor said the theme of the celebration: “Repositioning the Urhobo Nation For More Prosperity” aligns with the MORE Agenda of his administration, which embodies policy priorities for sustainable social and economic development through accelerated infrastructural renewal, youth development and empowerment, and the promotion of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

He said: “I am happy to let you know that through the various platforms of the Delta Action (for) Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) programme, a total of 203,204 persons have so far been empowered with business support packages.

“Another set of 5,426 persons received cash grants under the MORE Grant Scheme for petty traders, artisans, and female entrepreneurs, while 6,000 farmers were empowered with agricultural inputs to boost agricultural production in the state.

“We have also distributed fertilizer to farmers across the 25 Local Government Areas of the state in support of our drive to grow the family economy and ensure food security for our people.

“This is in addition to the expanded focus on Agriculture under the Result Area 2 – FADAMA (Food Security) of the D-CARES scheme, as well as the release of N1 billion counterpart funding for the Africa Union Development Agency, New Partnership for African Development (AUDA NEPAD), meant to empower 2,000 farmers for food production, livestock and aquaculture.

“We recently introduced the MORE Biz-Up programme to assist a minimum of 2,000 fledgling entrepreneurs who are finding it hard to cope under the harsh effects of the economy.”

Oborevwori thanked the people of Anioma, Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri nations for supporting his election and appealed to Urhobos to unite for the political and social economic development of the Urhobo nation and Delta State in general.

He said his administration had prioritised key infrastructure projects like Ayakoromo bridge and Trans-Warri Roads and bridges to fast-track their completion.

He urged the Urhobo nation to continue to function as one big, happy and united family, saying; “as individuals, we may have our political differences but we must, nevertheless, stand resolute in ensuring that the interest of our people, the state, and the nation comes first in all our actions and utterances.

“That is why, as Governor, I have maintained cordial relations with elected and appointed public officials of other political parties. I believe that we can disagree without being disagreeable, and learn to separate politics from governance.

“This attitude of tolerance, mutual understanding, and cooperation is imperative for peace and sustainable development.

“It is also my desire and earnest expectation that Urhobos in diaspora will channel their investments home to complement the efforts of the government to create jobs for our teeming youth population and drive inclusive economic growth.”

  • Oborevwori: Securing Delta

    Oborevwori: Securing Delta

    By Ray Umukoro

Delta governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is a man of few words. Neither showy nor given to vainglorious flamboyancy, Oborevwori has mastered the art of deploying actions to speak for him in lieu of oratorical flippancy which many politicians use to deceive the public.

The recent donation of 31 operational vehicles to the police and other security agencies in the state to boost their armoury and strengthen their operations is one of the many actions that define the leadership of Oborevwori, a governor famed for pragmatism rather than enticing language sophistry. Oborevwori would rather do it than say, ‘I will do it.’ The 31 vehicles consist of 23 pickup trucks and eight Sienna wagons, in addition to four Hilux vehicles previously delivered. This brings the fleet to 66 vehicles available to the task force aimed at enhancing daily patrols, surveillance and actual combat where necessary. And he did it without the fanfare of live television show across multiple TV stations. The gesture was just one among many in the line of duty. A routine.

Securing Delta was one of the cardinal components of the governor’s M.O.R.E agenda. During the electioneering days, he was unwavering about his devotion to the security of the oil-resourced state. Delta ranks among the top three largest producers of crude oil in Nigeria. This makes it one of the layers of the proverbial golden egg from which the country is being fiscally nourished over the decades. It has also been ranked among the most peaceful states in Nigeria, comparatively. Except for occasional cases of inter and intra-community upheavals, Delta since 1999 has been a haven of peace and a refuge for Nigerians from other insecurity-infested states.

While presenting the vehicles to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, an overtly upbeat Oborevwori said the vehicles were meant to further enhance the joint security operations in the state, code named “Operation Delta Sweep”. It was not just a donation; it was an act of courage.

Read Also: Nigeria spent N5.14tn on mineral fuels import in Q3, says NBS

He said the donation was informed by the general insecurity being experienced in the country and urged the security agencies to work together and share intelligence to ensure effective security in the state. The governor was being forthright. Insecurity of the most vicious order has eaten up what remains of the socio-economic fabric of the nation. Terrorism, once an offering on the fringes of the northeast, has permeated the entire nation, spreading its fatal fangs from the precincts of Borno State through the rain forests of the southeast and south-south to the southwest. The terrorists have become the unwanted neighbours of the frazzled populace.

Strangely, the bloody gang of goons appears to be ‘winning.’ Despite assurances by the top echelon of the nation’s security apparatchik that they are winning the war against insecurity and forcing the vampires to beat a retreat, the reality speaks differently. Kidnapping, banditry, dare-devil bank robberies and raw show of force continued to top the menu in the buffet of insecurity across the nation. To add to the fear factor among the citizens, viral videos of low-ranking security personnel drafted to the terror-infested forests and highways to fight the bandits and their ilk have been trending in which they complained of being under-equipped thus multiplying the anxieties of the law-abiding citizens.

And here’s the truth. Nigeria’s security agencies are under-equipped. President Muhammadu Buhari in his days tried to strengthen the national security arsenal. He bought a couple of Tucano jets said to be among the best war jets of the modern era. Some state governors followed in this stead by offering to equip the security agencies within their jurisdictions. It’s the right thing to do. This is the sense in which Oborevwori’s gesture of donating operational vehicles to the Delta State special anti-crime squad is not only commendable but illustrates the desire of a worthy leader to protect his constituents. Delta needs peace to sustain the spur of development which the Oborevwori government has triggered across all the local governments in the state. When there is peace in Delta, the nation gains. When there is peace, Deltans, a hardworking breed of Nigerians, are encouraged to engage in activities that broaden the frontiers of prosperity and shrink the circle of poverty. But Oborevwori did not just donate vehicles, he rebranded the state’s special security squad from ‘Delta Hawk’ to ‘Operation Delta Sweep’ to underscore the new thinking and strategy to deal effectively with mutations and devious initiatives of the demented denizens of gangland.

Rebranding helps to refuel confidence in a brand; inspire a new threshold of zeal among the owners/operators of the brand, in this case, the security agencies involved in the joint task force. Rebranding the state’s anti-crime squad will help build public trust, increase commitment and loyalty among the operatives; and reinforce the values of the squad in the minds of the citizens.

Oborevwori has always believed that meaningful and sustainable development cannot take place without security and sustained peace.  His vision has always been to create a secure environment where investors will be at peace to grow their investments; an environment that will also easily attract more investors into the state. He is doing just that and the partnerships his government has inked with private equities since his ascension to power attest to a leader with the vision to create wealth and jobs in his state.

He has sustained peace and security in the once-upon-a-time restive oil communities and along the Warri-Sapele corridor which he is gradually restoring its old glory as the commercial hub of the state. Oborevwori’s unwavering disposition to peace and security has significantly insulated Delta from the feast of violence and organized insecurity visited on neighbouring states. The net effect of this is the daily migration of Nigerians from other states to Delta either to live in or to do business.

A good barometer to measure this high level of security and social calmness in Delta is to look at the growing night life in the state; consider the raft of business ventures springing up at dizzying frequency across the state and to look at statistics on national security index.

The Delta joint security task force, established on December 10, 2020, as a policy response to rising violent crimes in the country, comprises the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Air Force, Navy, DSS, and the Civil Defence Corps.

Ever since, the task force has recorded significant successes in combating crimes of all shades including illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug-related offences. This has resulted in the sustained peace in the state especially in the push back to spill-over crimes from neighbouring states. On account of this peace, farmers (both agrarian and aquatic) have been able to go about their daily schedules. And recent statistics support this. Delta currently ranks as one of the safest and cheapest states to live in, with food inflation of 35.0% and total item inflation of 28.1% as of October, both lower than the national average. This is no happenstance. It is as a result of the sustained peace in Delta courtesy of the conscious efforts of the Sheriff of a rising Delta State.

Enduring peace vital for sustainable development, says Oborevwori

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged Nigerians to live in unity and harmony, stressing that only sustainable peace could guarantee meaningful development across the nation.

Oborevwori made the call when he received on a courtesy call, the internationally- renowned Jewish Christian Gospel Preacher, Rabbi Kirt Schneider at Government House, Asaba.

While highlighting the strong partnership between the state government and faith-based organisations, the governor lauded Rabbi Schneider for his commitment to evangelism and for winning souls for Christ.

He said: “Today is another testament to the strong partnership between our government and faith -based organisations. “Here in Delta State, so many great men of God have come to this state and, as a Christian and an Elder in the Living Faith Church, we welcome any person that comes to pray and bless this state.

“We are grateful for your presence and the vital work that you do in fostering unity in the body of Christ by promoting peace and spiritual growth in our nation.

“Your dedication to spreading the message of love and hope in our nation is a beacon of light in this challenging time. We know that your Ministry has saved thousands of souls with testimonies. “So, your coming here to Delta State is also a blessing to us. We thank you for your prayers for me and this land for us to continue to succeed and have peace. “It is only through peace that meaningful development can strive in Delta State and Nigeria and I know that your coming to Delta State will bring us more blessings in Jesus’ name.

“We also believe that, by working together, we will overcome the challenges that we face. I thank you for your dedication to the spiritual well-being of our people.”

Earlier, Rabbi Kirt Schneider, said he was in the state for a soul- winning crusade and to also pray for the revival of Nigeria and the black continent.

Rabbi Schneider, who chronicled how he had an encounter with Jesus over four decades ago, said he had been able to preach the gospel of Christ in over 200 countries of the world due to his personal relationship with Christ. The International gospel preacher poured encomiums on Oborevwori for putting God first in the administration of the state and prayed to God to give him the enabling grace to remain in faith.

Rabbi Schneider reminded all of the need to maintain an intimate relationship with God, whom, he said, had the cure for all challenges of humanity. Highlight of the visit was special prayers for the state and its leaders across board.

When Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office as Governor of Delta State on May 29, 2023, he assured Deltans of his commitment to advancing the state’s development, building on the achievements of his predecessors. Since then, he has worked tirelessly, with landmark projects spread across the state.

In nearly every local government and senatorial district, Oborevwori has initiated or completed signature projects. During his inaugural address, he emphasized his focus on restoring Warri, the “Oil City,” to its former glory. The twin cities of Warri and Effurun, along with their environs, have long suffered from infrastructural decay and frequent flooding.

Oborevwori has remained steadfast in his efforts to revitalize these cities through urban renewal initiatives and the construction of new infrastructure. Numerous roads in Warri have been transformed, including the completed Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads, Gabriel Mabiaku Road, and Esisi Road to Estate Roundabout, with a spur to Nana College connecting Ajamimogha.

The immediate past administration had awarded the rehabilitation of the Warri Township Stadium. After visiting the project site twice, Governor Oborevwori determined that the contractors lacked the capacity to meet the project specifications. As a result, he reassigned the project to construction giant Julius Berger Plc for its timely and effective completion.

Another project of immense value is the Trans-Warri Road and bridges which Governor Oborevwori and his Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri Kingdom drove through to Ode-Itsekiri, the traditional headquarters of the Iwere nation for the first time.

In the Isoko nation, Governor Oborevwori has not disappointed the people with the completion and inauguration of some projects at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. During his first 100 days in office, Governor Oborevwori inaugurated the completed Administrative building, living quarters for the University’s principal officers as well as internal roads in the University.

Just recently at the inauguration of Emevor-Orogun Road Phase 1, Governor Oborevwori announced the award of contract for the construction of the College Health Sciences building at the University. Aside from the University, the Governor also recently approved the establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ovrode in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

Other projects included the completion of Enwhe-Olomoro Road; Enhwe Internal Roads; Ongoing Enhwe – Uwheru Road, reconstruction of 24km Isoko ring Road from Ellu, Ovrode, Ofagbe, Orie-Irri, Okpe-Isoko, Uro-Irri and Ada-Irri road in Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas.

It is also worthy to note that work has reached an advanced stage on the completion of the Isoko section of the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway. Governor Oborevwori has ensured that the project goes on uninhibited by making prompt payments for the contractors to remain on site all year round.

At a recent State Executive Council meeting held in August, the

construction of Olomoro-Igbide Road; construction of Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2; and the construction of Otekpo Road in Ellu, Isoko North were also approved.

Other projects are completed remedial works for the failed approach to the bridge at Bedesegba along Ohoror-Bomadi Road in Bomadi Local Government Area. Exco also approved the reconstruction of Ohoror-Bomadi Road; Ekeye-Ovedhe close in Okumagba Layout, Warri, internal roads and drains in Kurutie, Obitobon-Elolo-Ajaokurogbo-Orubu Road Phase 2, Ogidigben; Kurutie internal roads Phase 2; Rehabilitation of Odimodi, Ogulagha road in Burutu Local Government Area and the construction of rigid concrete pavement of Stadium Road, Ugborodo in Warri South-West Local Government Area.

Oborevwori’s accomplishments are also evident in Delta Central Senatorial District, particularly through the ongoing flyover bridges and road expansion projects undertaken by construction giants, Julius Berger.

In Sapele metropolis, over 16 kilometers of roads construction with drainages are in progress to revitalize the town. These projects include; the reconstruction of Major Bowen Road from Okpe Road to New Ogorode Road, the construction of Benin Road from Green Egbedi Road at Olympia to Abeke Road, and the construction of Uko Road from Benin Road through Otuedor Road to Ugberikoko Road. Other projects include; the construction of Obule School Road from Orodje Grammar School to Okirigbagha by the Okirigwe Police Station, Alegbe Road from Abeke Road to New Ogorode Road, and the extension of Hausa Road from Ogodo Road to Commercial Avenue, among others.

Additional rehabilitation efforts in Sapele include; the Old Sapele-Warri Road from Amukpe Junction to Ikwewu Community, with a spur to Austin Ayemidejor Close, and the overlay of Okirighwre-Benin Road from Sapele-Warri Road to Gammon Bridge. Roads such as Orhorhor, Chechester, and Benjamin Oseregbaje are also being reconstructed.

Despite these significant infrastructural strides, a skit maker’s protest over road conditions in his area recently drew attention to Sapele for the wrong reasons. While it is his right to protest and demand government intervention, it was unfortunate that some bloggers falsely linked Oborevwori and the state government to his alleged arrest. The Oborevwori administration values public feedback and firmly opposes any attempt to silence dissent. Therefore, the administration categorically dissociates itself from the skit maker’s arrest and any related actions.

In Ughelli North, the Oborevwori administration approved the construction of several new roads to alleviate traffic congestion at the popular Otovwodo junction. These projects include the construction of Uduere Road, Okogbe Road, Oyakemeagbegha Street, Ohre Street, and Edo Road. Additionally, the Okan Junction to Agbarho road received attention to ease traffic around the PTI Junction, Effurun Roundabout, and DSC Roundabout, with flyover construction underway.

In Okpe, some roads have been completed while some others are at completion stage, including the dualization of Ezesi Road in Orerokpe, Orerokpe-Okulohor-Oviri Road, Ugolo Road, and Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo Road.

In Delta North Senatorial District, Isheagu-Ewulu Road and Bridge, the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, which is resplendent of Oborevwori’s midas touch, remains a testament to the Governor’s determination to do MORE.

Similarly, the multi billion Naira Kwale-Beneku bridge linking Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East LGAs has continued with accelerated pace since Governor Oborevwori took over office, such that it is about 99 percent completed to the delight and appreciation of adjoining communities who will no longer commute by canoe, boat or pontoon.

It must further be pointed out that Oborevwori inaugurated a chain of connecting roads in Asaba, as part of activities marking his 100 days in office. The roads, 29 in all, with drainages on both sides, though started by Senator Okowa, were completed by Oborevwori, including the strategic road leading to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council.

Also, Oborevwori was in the campuses of Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai to inaugurate multiple projects, including ultra modern auditoriums and lecture theaters as part of his 100 days in office. Management and students of the institution attest to the Governor’s empathy and concern for their welfare.

The administration recently completed the Ugbolu Onwuka road and Ogbotobor Avenue in Oshimili South local government, while rehabilitation of Gerald Onianwa Crescent, Odigwe Juwah Avenue, Ify Okeke Street, Nkem Okwuofu Street, Victor Anene Street and MBA Road all in Asaba are in progress. The High Court building complex in Asaba has also been completed and inaugurated under the watch of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The governor has also approved award of contract for the construction of Okey and Iyke Oputa Street, Aboh in Ndokwa East, Issele-Azagba-Otulu Road in Aniocha North and South LGAs, projects which are meant to transform the outlook of those areas.

At the last State Executive Council meeting, Exco approved the building of a College of Medical Sciences at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, (DSUST) Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

The construction of internal roads at the Headquarters of the 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ibusa, in Oshimili North Local Government Area, construction of Aziken Avenue, DDPA Low Cost Housing Estate, Boji-Boji, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area also got Exco’s approval.

Exco also approved the construction of Utagba-Uno/Ndemili Road phase 1, and Eweshi – Utagba-Uno Road, both in Ndokwa West Local Government Area. Construction of the main access road to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; construction of Sokoh Estate Road and Okito Street, Off Airport Road, Effurun, in Uwvie Local Government Area; the construction of internal roads in Kiagbodo phase 1, and the rehabilitation of Odimodi/ Okonto/ Ogulaha Road, both in Burutu Local Government Area.”

Similarly, Exco also approved the construction of Odoziobodo/Aninta Street, off Ezenei Avenue, Oshimili South LGA, rehabilitation of Ekakpamre/Ekrokpe/Usiefrun and Orhuwhorun Road in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas, and the construction of Bezi Road, off College Road in Aladja in Udu Local Government Area.

Others include: The construction of Uduophori Secondary Commercial School Road in Patani Local Government Area, the construction of Ofuegbe Street, Amai in Ukwuani Local Government Area; the construction of Oloma/Eyewuoma internal roads at Koko Beach and the construction of Ogbogudu community road in Egbema, Warri North Local Government Area.

In just 16 months in office, Oborevwori has continued to work in all parts of the state, leaving indelible footprints of his administration’s sagacity in the sands of time and one can only imagine what his achievements would look like when he rounds off his first term in office in 2027.

Delta flood: Oborevwori establishes five IDP camps

Delta State Government, weekend, said it has established five internally displaced persons camp (IDP) in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro and Otu-Jeremi as rising water levels threaten coastal communities.

It urged Deltans to move into the camps located across the three Senatorial Districts.

It vowed not to abandon flood victims across the state as rising water levels threaten those living in coastal communities.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Festus Ahon, gave the assurance during a television programme monitored in Asaba.

According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remained committed to ensuring that all residents of the state were protected and catered for in line with his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

He, however, called on those living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher grounds as the government was making adequate arrangements to accommodate them at the Internally Displaced (IDP) Camps nearest to them.

He said: “As soon as we got the warning on the impending flood, our hard working Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, set up a high-powered flood management Committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu.

“The Committee went straight to work and we have been alerting residents living in such flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds.

“In the interim, we are setting up camps in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro and Otu-Jeremi for the people to move in.

“The flood management Committee, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been going round coastal communities to enlighten the people that the flood is coming and they should move to the camps nearest to them.

“As a responsible government, the Oborevwori’s administration is committed to ensuring the safety of lives of all residents across the state.

“As a Committee, we have made arrangements for mattresses, feeding, electricity, water and medicals for the IDPs and we urge them to relocate to the camps nearest to them.

“Aside from the above provisions, we have also made arrangements for school children to be taught in the camps.”

  • Flood, water pollution hindrance to food security

Flood, water pollution hindrance to food security

Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged the Federal Government and the United Nations to tackle the menace of flood and water pollution, to ensure food sufficiency in the country.

He made the call in his remarks at the 2023 World Food Day Celebration with the theme: “Water is life, water is food, leave no one behind”, in Asaba.

Oborevwori, represented by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, said the objective was to promote global awareness and action for those who suffered from hunger, and to highlight the need to ensure healthy diets for all.

He said: “Although water makes up over 50 per cent of our bodies and covers about?71 per cent?of the earth’s surface, only 2.5 per cent of water is fresh, suitable for drinking, agriculture, and for most industrial uses.?

“It is important to emphasise that water is a driving force for people, economies and nature and the foundation of our food.

“Data from FAO further shows that the global food system relies heavily on water resources, with agriculture consuming 72 per cent of the world’s fresh water.

“In addition, 95 per cent of our food is produced on land (soil and water) and 600 million people rely on aquatic food system for livelihood.

“The increasing stress on our planet’s water resources due to increasing population growth, urbanisation, economic development and climate change makes effective water management essential for sustainable food production.”

He said Delta State was blessed with an environment suitable for agriculture, fish production and its value chain.

“With land that is suitable for the cultivation of virtually every crop, the state has 17, 698 square kilometres of land mass with 1,770 square kilometres that is made up of fresh water swamp and 5,840 square kilometres of mangrove swamp.

“However, pollution is a major challenge that is hampering full utilisation of water resources in our state and the country in general.

“Due to pollution as a result of oil exploration activities, we cannot fully harness the abundant economic potentials of our rivers and rivulets. It is common to see waste dumped in rivers and streams.

“Poor water quality is affecting our people, the economy and the environment. This is an area that the Federal Government and the United Nations should tackle if we are to have full benefits of our water resources today and in future.”

Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Perez Omoun, said the state government placed great premium on the agricultural sector by embarking on programmes aimed at improving the agricultural value chain in line with the MORE Agenda of the governor, to ensure all ‘Deltans’ had access to adequate quality and quantity of food and water.
