Tinubu/Shettima 2027: APC Northwest group endorses continuation of joint ticket

The APC Northwest Reclamation Front has thrown its weight behind the continued pairing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement on Tuesday, the group’s national coordinator, Mallam Hisham Habib, and Deputy National Coordinator (Special Duties), Safwan Isah Umar, described Shettima as the most suitable running mate for Tinubu, urging the party leadership to retain him on the ticket.

The group warned that removing Shettima as Vice President would create a significant vacuum and called on President Tinubu to intervene in the interest of party unity and national stability.

They praised Shettima’s leadership credentials, noting his stellar record as former Borno State Governor and his loyal support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

Following consultations with key stakeholders from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, the group said it reached a unanimous decision to support the Tinubu/Shettima ticket for a second term and appealed for calm among aggrieved party factions.

“As a northern leader, Shettima remains a unifying figure committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to the region. Broader consultation is key to resolving internal party disputes,” the group noted.

They also called on the APC leadership to prioritise the inclusion of women and youth and warned “desperate agitators” against sowing disunity that could cost the party victory in 2027.

APC Northeast endorses Tinubu, Shettima for 2027

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Northeast have endorsed the retention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.

Their adoption is contained in resolutions passed during the region’s Consultative Forum meeting in Gombe yesterday.

At the meeting were governors, National Assembly members, some key party leaders, including National Chairman Abdulahi Ganduje and former Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

The states in the Northeast are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.

The APC has three governors in the zone. These are: Babagana Zulum (Borno), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe) and host Governor Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe). All of them attended the meeting.

One of the resolutions said the ticket had been useful to the zone and any alteration might create division among leaders.

But a few leaders led by the National Vice Chairman (Northeast), Mustapha Salihu, made a fresh case for the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

It was not immediately clear if Ribadu was interested in being the Vice President or not.

A source at the meeting said the session was a stocktaking type, governors and leaders took a position on 2027.

The source said: “Most leaders, including governors and the National Assembly Caucus wanted continuity. We opted for the retention of Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

“We don’t want to underrate the coalition being put in place by some Northern leaders, including some dissenting Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) wing of APC, we felt it was better to avoid division.

“The truth is that we have got a better deal, more strategic appointments and projects under this ticket, why changing a winning team.”

Asked to be specific, the source gave insights into what happened at the zonal meeting.

“But Usman Kumo, Chief Whip of the House, representing Kumo Federal Constituency, from Gombe State endorsed the ticket on behalf of the Northeast House of Reps Caucus.

“Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno, representing Borno North, endorsed the joint ticket on behalf of the Senate from the Northeast while Ali Bukar Dalori, Deputy National Chairman (North), spoke on behalf of the other National Working Committee (NWC) members from the Northeast.

“Only Comrade Mustapha Salihu that spoke against the ticket while the four members of the NWC from the North-East all supported the joint ticket.

“Those NWC members, who supported the joint ticket were Dalori;  Mohammad Ali Kumo (Deputy Financial Secretary, from Gombe State); Zainab Ibrahim (Deputy Women Leader, from Taraba State); and Abubakar Maikafi (National Auditor, from Bauchi State).”

There was disruption during the meeting over Mustapha’s dissenting position.

Senior party leaders and stakeholders from across the zone were also in attendance.

The Forum praised the President and the Vice President for what it’s members described as transformational leadership in the short time they have been in office, driven by the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Yahaya said: “The Northeast is fully behind the president and the vice president. Their leadership has brought renewed hope to this region.”

Zulum highlighted key achievements of the current administration over the past two years, particularly in sectors such as health, education, youth and women empowerment, revenue generation, and overall improvement in citizens’ welfare.

He emphasised that continuity of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket in 2027 would sustain the ongoing progress and national unity.

Ganduje said: “We need unity more than ever. This region delivered over 1.2 million votes in 2023. In 2027, we expect three times that. But we must remain focused and disciplined as a party.

“This zone has produced the number two of this country, we are proud of this zone, we are proud of the north and we are proud of Nigeria as a nation.

“I have to tell you, we have a progressive president, the leader of our party Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and we are proud of vice president Shettima, it is a one ticket according to the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.”

The Forum promised to forward its resolution to the party’s Abuja National Headquarters.

  • Tinubu has fulfilled Abiola’s vision for a democratic Nigeria — Shettima

Tinubu has fulfilled Abiola’s vision for a democratic Nigeria — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fulfilled the vision of late Chief M.K.O. Abiola by keeping alive the democratic flame and working to build a Nigeria that serves all its citizens.

Speaking on behalf of Tinubu at the public lecture commemorating Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day at the State House, Shettima described the President as “one of Abiola’s most trusted lieutenants,” who now carries the baton in the continuing struggle for the soul of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said: “in the great theatre of providence, history has returned the baton to one of Abiola’s most trusted lieutenants in the struggle for the soul of democracy in Nigeria: His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

He recalled the sacrifice of Chief Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, describing him as a patriot “who surrendered all he had for the soul of Nigeria.”

Rather than dying in vain, Shettima said Abiola’s dream has become a collective covenant “to stand for what is right, to defend the sanctity of choice, and to honour the blood that watered the roots of our democracy.”

Shettima drew a symbolic parallel between the denied Abiola-Kingibe ticket and Tinubu’s presidency.

“The ticket once denied Nigerians… has found resonance and vindication in a second coming that mirrors it in composition and conviction,” he said.

The Vice President credited President Tinubu with building a government that listens and includes all Nigerians, saying, “President Tinubu has kept that covenant, extending a hand across political divides, ethnic frontiers, and generational gaps to build a Nigeria that works for everyone.”

He emphasised that the burden of democracy must not rest on one individual, urging Nigerians to rally behind the Renewed Hope Agenda and protect the nation’s democracy from backsliding.

“Each of us here owes a sacred duty to support the President’s quest not just to renew hope, but to institutionalise governance, to deepen the roots of democracy, and to build a nation immune to the threats of regression,” he said.

Cameroonian High Commissioner to Nigeria and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, H.E. Salaheddine Abbas Ibrahim, praised Nigeria’s unity despite its challenges and encouraged continued efforts to preserve democratic ideals.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, said June 12 represents the collective will of the people.

He urged Nigerians—young and old—to actively participate in shaping democratic governance, warning that democracy is not sustained by ceremonial observance alone.

“The legacies and trajectory of President Tinubu are reminders of the courage needed to nurture democracy,” Uzodimma noted.

The highlight of the Democracy Day celebration was the unveiling of three books chronicling President Tinubu’s leadership and policy direction: ‘Tinubunomics’, ‘Leading with Courage’, and ‘Turning Challenges into Opportunities’.

Shettima flags off national asset restoration drive in Borno

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday launched the Federal Government’s National Asset Restoration Programme in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing it as a landmark initiative to reclaim Nigeria’s dormant industrial and agricultural capacity through engineering-led innovation.

Spearheaded by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), the programme aims to restore over 26,000 broken but serviceable heavy-duty machines and repurpose nearly 500,000 idle components scattered across the country.

Speaking during the launch of the Programme at the Borno State Agricultural Mechanization Farm Center in Maiduguri, the Vice President said the objective of the programme is to reduce waste, cut unnecessary spending, and power national development through localised innovation and sustainable asset management.

Shortly after commissioning the National Asset Restoration Programme, Shettima proceeded to Borno State University where he commissioned a power infrastructure projects executed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC).

The power project implemented under the Distribution Intervention Projects, includes a 1X7.5MVA, 33/11KV injection substation, 3km of 33KV line, 2.5km of 11KV line, 2.5km of LT line, and 3 nos. 500KVA distribution transformers.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “for so long, we have been profiled as a nation with poor maintenance culture. This dysfunction cuts across both the private and public sectors, and we owe it to ourselves to say: enough is enough.”

The Vice President reaffirmed that the President Tinubu administration is committed to building a productive, self-reliant, and diversified economy, with strategic investments in infrastructure, innovation, and local capacity at the core of that transformation.

“This initiative is a response to our cross-generational dilemma about what to do with abandoned and poorly maintained assets of the nation—of the people..It’s a powerful shift in how we think about value, sustainability, and innovation,” the Vice President said.

He stressed the need to have a national inventory of value waiting to be unlocked, and as such “We must commend NASENI for stepping forward with this brilliant idea to mitigate a national tragedy.”

The Vice President also noted NASENI’s contributions to national development through technology transfer, local engineering, and adaptive innovation, especially in areas such as compressed natural gas (CNG) retrofitting, renewable energy, and agricultural mechanization.

“We can’t create durable Nigerian solutions to Nigerian problems unless we localize global technologies. Relevant agencies must be supported to point us towards a stabler nation and a promising future,” the Vice President said.

Praising the leadership of NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Vice President noted that the agency’s renewed direction is marked by “vision, urgency, and clarity of purpose.

“The direction NASENI is headed is one driven by action, impact, innovation, and awareness of what the nation needs,” he said.

VP Shettima also called for public cooperation in safeguarding the assets that will be restored, explaining that these resources belong to the Nigerian people.

“If we restore these vital assets, we must all protect them. These machines, these tools, and these technologies are the property of each of you—of each Nigerian. It’s your collective national inheritance,” he added.

    • VP solicits greater support for Tinubu

Vice President Kashim Shettima  yesterday  appealed  for national unity, collective sacrifice, and unwavering support for  the President Bola Tinubu’s administration, as Nigeria joined the rest of the world in celebrating the Eid al-Adha.

A similar plea for unity, especially among  Nigerian leaders came from  the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

He said such unity was necessary in addressing the pressing challenges facing the country.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu urged citizens to offer prayers for the nation’s peace, stability, and continued progress.

Speaking during prayers at the National Eid Ground along Airport Road in Abuja, Vice President Shettima  asked  Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political differences and embrace unity as the bedrock for national development and lasting peace.

“This is a period of sober reflection, a season of reaching out to the indigent among us, of building bridges of brotherhood and sisterhood. Life is a marathon, and as individuals, we can run faster, but we can wear out easily. But as a family, as a collective, as a nation, we can gain greater traction and reach our desired destination,” VP Shettima said.

He urged citizens to stand behind President Tinubu’s leadership, noting that the unity of purpose and shared sacrifice are vital in addressing issues like insecurity and poverty.

“What binds us together supersedes whatever that divides us. I wish to thank all Nigerians for their support and empathy, and call on all of us to coalesce into a single purse to confront all of our common challenges of insecurity, destitution, and so many other challenges.

“But be rest assured that no matter how long the night is, it must give way to the light of the dawn. We have crossed the Rubicon, and we are on the path to sustained peace and development,” the Vice President added.

He noted that a single term of five or six years is enough for any government to focus and serve the people and deliver on its mandate, calling for a constitutional amendment to effect this.

Makinde said the call became imperative in view of his observation of how many years elected officers are able to face the serious business of governance out of a total of 8years a two term an elected person may spend.

According to Makinde, the time used for serious business of governance out of the eight years in most cases don’t go beyond five to six years as out of the eight years, about two to three years will be used for electioneering campaigns among other political party activities.

Vice President Shettima, who is the Eminent Guest of Honour, will be joined at the launch by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum alongside NASENI Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, and other stakeholders in the agricultural and engineering sectors.

Available data indicates that while Nigeria possesses approximately 55,000 tractors, only 7,000 to 10,000 are operational.

The Tractor Recovery Project is aimed at reversing this trend by restoring hundreds of non-functional units in Borno and surrounding regions.

Each tractor has undergone comprehensive rehabilitation covering mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural systems to make them fully operational and ready for immediate use on farms.

This strategic intervention is designed to rebuild livelihoods, strengthen food production systems, and revitalise rural economies through indigenous engineering solutions.
