Shettima to flag off Light up Southeast Initiate on Monday

Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Monday, February 26, launch the Light up South East Initiative to accelerate power supply to industrial clusters in the region.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, February 23, by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.

The event, billed to hold in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, is in continuation of the ongoing efforts to improve energy supply to industrial clusters across the country.

The project, a collaboration between the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) and its partners, will feature key stakeholders in the nation’s power sector.

A key highlight of the Vice President’s engagement in Enugu on Monday will be the South East Business Roundtable featuring top government officials and business leaders deliberating on delivering reliable and sustainable power to industrial and residential areas in the region.

The vice president had on October 12, 2023, flagged off the initiative in the southwest at the Agbara Industrial Cluster, with stakeholders committing to the successful implementation of the project across the country.

The Tinubu administration had from the outset committed to revamping Nigeria’s Infrastructure framework with the much-needed drive in empowering Nigerians and strengthening the nation’s economic policies.

Similarly, the vice president will on the same day commission the 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant in the Osisioma Industrial Layout, Aba, Abia State.

    • ONSA, CBN, NFIU go after saboteurs undermining naira

The Federal Government talked tough yesterday on attempts by forces bent on creating anarchy and destabilising the country.

It accused those who lost election and cannot wait till 2027 on working for the downfall of the country.

A joint effort was also launched by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligent Unit (NFIU) to combat economic saboteurs manipulating dollar/naira exchange rate.

Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed concern over the actions of those with the intention of disrupting the country’s stability and plunging it into anarchy.

He spoke in an address on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Public Wealth Management Conference organised by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoFI) in Abuja.

Shettima noted that these forces failed to attain power through legitimate means and are willing to see Nigeria fall apart in their interests.

He said: “We know the consequences of unveiling the masquerade. Forces are hell bent on plunging this country into a state of anarchy, those that could not get into power through the ballot box. Instead of waiting for 2027, they are so desperate; this country can fall apart as far as they are concerned. But we are going to visit them”.

He revealed that “Just a few nights ago, 45 trucks of maize were caught being transported into a neighbouring country. There are 32 illegal routes in that axis. At the moment when they were intercepted, the price of maize fell by N10,000, from N60,000 to N50,000. So there are forces that are hell bent on undermining our nation but this is the time for us to come together”.

The Vice President stressed the importance of unity during these challenging times. He called on citizens to “rally round our President, rally round our governors, and rally round each other. We have the resources, we have the intellect, and we have the resources. I am assuring you that we have crossed the rubicon”.

Shettima also highlighted the resilience of Nigeria and Nigerians, emphasising that despite the efforts of these disruptive forces, the country will overcome any storm. He acknowledged that Nigeria faces economic challenges, particularly in the foreign exchange sector, but he assured the public that the government is committed to addressing these issues. Shettima stated that steps are already being taken to improve economic performance. “We are not altogether in a very bad shape than the FX challenge. All hands are on deck to address the FX challenge” he said.

The Vice President called for unity among Nigerians, stating that the shared identity and goals of the country were more important than any division. He emphasized that Nigeria has the necessary resources and intellect to overcome its challenges and make the nation thrive.

Shettima believes that the time had come for Nigerians to come together and work towards a better future for their country.

Shettima quoted President Tinubu as saying that the Federal Government has set a target of raising a minimum of $10 billion to bolster foreign exchange liquidity, a crucial factor in stabilising the Naira and fostering economic growth.

Central to this objective President Tinubu said is the efficient management of the Federal Government’s assets and investments to maximise their revenue-generating capacity. This includes a bold plan to double the GDP growth rate and significantly expand the GDP base within the next eight years.

President Tinubu acknowledged the longstanding issues of mismanagement and underutilization that have plagued the country’s assets, both domestically and internationally, resulting in substantial revenue losses that have impeded economic progress.

However, he expressed confidence in the newly restructured Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) tasked with overseeing and actively managing these assets, which will now take a leading role in addressing these challenges.

Transparency and accountability are highlighted as fundamental principles in this endeavor, with the President emphasizing the importance of enhanced corporate governance, strategic partnerships, and attracting alternative investment capital to drive higher returns.

The increased revenue generated will be earmarked for essential sectors such as education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and power, with the aim of lifting millions out of poverty and fostering sustainable economic development and job creation, particularly for the youth.

President Tinubu stressed that the initiative goes beyond mere revenue generation, emphasising its role in promoting inclusive and sustainable growth. By effectively managing public resources, the government seeks to build a more equitable society and unleash the full potential of its citizens.

He called upon all stakeholders, including ministries, development financial institutions, and both public and private sector entities, to collaborate with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated in optimizing these strategic assets. The President expressed optimism that this collective effort will unlock Nigeria’s untapped potential and pave the way for a brighter future for all citizens.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has charged the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) to evolve a stronger synergy to further enhance the business environment in Nigeria.

Vice President Shettima gave the charge on Tuesday during the second PEBEC meeting he chaired at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, further tasking the Council to also be thinking of the adoption of technology from stakeholders in the public and private sectors to achieve efficiency.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the charge from Shettima came just as PEBEC commences its 90-day Regulatory Reform Accelerator Action Plan.

The PEBEC action plan underscores the commitment of the Tinubu administration to delivering impactful reforms, working with Ministry, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to foster a conducive business environment and improve the perception about the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

The Vice President noted that a robust engagement among stakeholders and adopting relevant technology will help in addressing bottlenecks experienced by operators in the nation’s entry points as well as in the area of business regulation.

The 90-Day Regulatory Reform Accelerator aligns with the PEBEC’s Regulatory Reforms Workstream, focusing on eight key indicators designed to deliver measurable growth across industries, while institutionalizing MDA-led reforms through BFA 2022 compliance.

While the plan will be implemented in close collaboration with stakeholders, PEBEC is to provide regular updates on the Accelerator’s progress.

Earlier in her presentation, Special Adviser to the President on PEBEC and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, stated that the 90-day Accelerator will deliver measurable export-focused impact for productivity and competitiveness across key sectors to improve the Nigerian business environment and support the economic initiatives of the Tinubu administration.

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that it is on the right path to economic prosperity.

It acknowledged the hardship but reassured citizens that it would be over soon.

Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike gave the ray of hope at different fora in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt at the weekend.

Shettima, at The Sun Newspapers Awards in Lagos on Saturday night, said a brighter future lay ahead for Nigerians through the economic reform policies.

He added that this will be made possible with shared commitment, mutual respect and open dialogue.

The vice president was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.

He said in a paper titled “Celebrating Excellence, Building Together: Our Commitment To Press Freedom And Media Development In Nigeria,” that the reforms, including his economic policies and investment in infrastructure, were already showing signs of positive results.

“The government is commencing the implementation of the Pulaku Initiative, a large-scale resettlement programme aimed at addressing the root causes of farmers-herders conflicts.

“The initiative will revitalise the affected communities through the construction of residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities.

“I inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate the implementation of the initiative in fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to improve the lives of all Nigerians,” he said.

Shettima also emphasised the crucial role the media must play in achieving this goal, calling for collaboration and a shared commitment to national progress.

He added that the media must not fail to play their roles as “watchdogs, truth-seekers, and the voices that inform and empower our citizens.”

He further noted President Tinubu’s commitment to a vibrant press, recognising that “a free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.”

While advocating press freedom, Shettima urged the media to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and avoid sensationalism.

Akume, who chaired The Sun Awards, said while nation-building is a collective endeavour, the citizens must support the government in its efforts to build a truly great country

The SGF said: “The Tinubu Administration shall remain steadfast in its commitment to building a brighter future for all Nigerians, under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“While progress may seem slow at times, the vision for a better tomorrow remains resolute. We shall soon navigate successfully the current economic challenges.”

Yesterday, at the opening session of the 2024 First Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Abuja, where he represented President Tinubu, Akume said the country was looking up to the bishops to continue to encourage Nigerians as the government works assiduously to reposition the economy and end insecurity.

He said: “The season of Lent is an apt time to host this critical meeting as it is a period of profound reflection, prayer, fasting, and charitable giving which coincides with a challenging period of economic hardship in our nation which we are working to reverse.

“While bold economic reforms have been undertaken by this administration, resulting in short-term hardship, they are borne out of a deep-seated commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and stability.

“This administration inherited a daunting economic landscape, necessitating decisive action to alter our nation’s downward trajectory.

“With unwavering dedication, we are striving towards a prosperous, healthy, and globally competitive Nigeria.

“Given the critical situation, now more than ever before, we must remain steadfast, renewing our faith in God’s provision and protection.

“Amidst adversity, we must remain resolute, renewing our faith in God’s providence and walking in love as we support one another.

“This administration is steadfast in its resolve to enhance security, bolster the economy, and create opportunities for all Nigerians.

“We acknowledge the various hardships affecting nations across the world precipitated and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the escalating cost of living.

“However, we draw strength from our collective hope and diligent efforts of the government, private sector, religious organisations and others, trusting that through God’s grace, better days lie ahead

“As spiritual leaders, My Lord Bishops, we rely on your unwavering encouragement to the Nigerian populace.

“Your commitment to upholding integrity, offering sound counsel, and fostering constructive dialogue is deeply appreciated by the government.

“The church’s engagement with Nigerians on matters of faith enriches our responsiveness and strengthens our national fabric.

“Both church and government are aligned in our shared commitment to a brighter future for all Nigerians. Through strategic policies, well-thought-out initiatives and investments.

“Our administration aims to drive economic transformation, ensure security, enhance food production, harness natural resources, develop critical infrastructure, improve social services, foster economic diversification, and enhance governance efficiency.

“These efforts are geared towards building a prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria for all.

“Although the economic hardship and security challenges may seem daunting, let us continue to encourage one another in the Lord and pray without ceasing.

“Likewise, let us remember Galatians 6:9 which reminds us ‘not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’”

‘Reforms only way to economic recovery’

In Rivers, Akpabio and Wike insisted that Tinubu’s economic policies were the only way to build a prosperous national economy.

They argued that the policies to turn around and address years of rot in the economic landscape were not miracles that could manifest in six months.

Akpabio and Wike spoke during a thanksgiving service by Senator Barry Mpigi to appreciate God for his electoral victory on February 25 last year in Koroma Tai Local Government Area.

Wike said though people complained that the reforms had put them in harsh economic positions, they remained the only way to take the country to its destination.

Wike, who spoke before the Senate President, chided some governors for blaming the hardship in the country on Tinubu.

He recalled that the same governors had praised the President for not interfering with the processes that resulted in their Supreme Court victories.

The minister, who is the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said President Tinubu needed the support of all stakeholders in the efforts to address the “inherited crisis” in the country.

Wike said: “I believe that God in his infinite mercy will give us the strength to work and continue to support Mr President. The decision of Mr. President is hard but if we are patient at the end of the day, we will get to where we want to go.

“It is funny that some people want him to bring a policy to change something that had spoilt many years ago within six months. Even if it is a miracle, it is difficult. What is required is to give him support.

“I seriously believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda. We are going to do everything to continue to support Mr. President.

“I watched after the Supreme Court verdicts; everybody that came out would say ‘I thank Mr President for not interfering’. But immediately that expired people are saying a different thing.

“I watched every governor after they thanked God, the next person was Mr. President. But just after two weeks, everything evaporated. Now it is Mr . ‘President we are dying.’”

He appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope.

Wike said: “Nigerians should not lose hope. Look at what we are doing in Abuja. It means that Mr President will do better. It is a sign of good things to come.

“People are saying Wike is doing well but it is because the President is in support of it. The President is committed to seeing that Nigerians have better lives.”

Wike also said that about 85 per cent of persons who secured victory in the past elections in Rivers State are still in his team.

He boasted that with such a force, he could no longer wait for the 2027 general election.

He added: “With the forces we have, I don’t know of anybody who will challenge us. It is like tomorrow is 2027. I cannot wait. The two leaders of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and APC are here.

“It is only in Rivers that you can find this unity. People don’t like it. So they do everything possible to make sure we are divided. But since we know, we have refused to be divided.”

‘We don’t know what to charge Emefiele with’

Akpabio, in an analogy, compared the poor economic condition Tinubu inherited to a bucket filled with foams while the under has a small quantity of water.

He said: “God has been able to merge us politically. What we need now is economic rejuvenation and I believe strongly that through President Tinubu God will answer our prayer.

“Nigeria was like a foam inside a pail or bucket containing a small quantity of water. As the foam filled the pail, you would think it had no water. By the time you push the foam down, your hands will only touch water.

“The kind of economic mess we were in a lot of people do not understand. The economic situation was tricky.

“We don’t even know what to charge the former Central Bank Governor (Godwin Emefiele) with. We don’t know whether to charge him for putting foam on top of a pail or to charge him for printing notes without income. I don’t know what we will charge him with.

“What we know is that we are here today because of the actions and policies that they took and we recognise that but we are now battling to ensure that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed and have three square meals on their tables.”

Like Wike, the Senate President insisted that Tinubu’s policies were designed to gradually give the country a clear economic footprint.

He argued that such could not be achieved overnight

“Nigerians should rest assured that we campaigned for these jobs and we will not let them down. All we need is patience. The rot that has happened in Nigeria for many years cannot be solved within months, “ Akpabio added.

The Senate President used the opportunity to appeal to Wike to look towards Ogoni land for someone that would match his achievements as Rivers State governor.

In a parliamentary style, he put a question to the gathering on where the next governor of the state would come from in 2027 to which those in attendance chorused Ogoniland.

Akpabio immediately announced that “the ayes have it,” and then turned to Wike, saying: “Barry Mpigi is thanking God for the future of Ogoniland.

“One of the hallmarks of leadership is loyalty. You cannot be a good leader unless you are a good follower. Wike followed all past leaders in Rivers.”

Still facing Wike, the Senate President made a veiled reference to former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, whom he said never contested an election but became a governor.

He said: “I know you (Wike) followed Dr. Peter Odili very well. There was a time my former good friend was in Ghana and you were running around here with lawyers.

“You were the first to have the pronouncement of the Supreme Court making someone a governor without the person going for an election.

“On getting there he turned around and asked: ‘Why will this man (Wike) be this powerful?’ He had to fight you.

“We were not surprised when in 2023 you said agreement is agreement. If you don’t want to adhere to an agreement on election day, come and win in Rivers State.”

Akpabio also thanked the minister for backing Tinubu, saying: “It is your support that had enabled the Southsouth to produce the first Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.”

The Senate President called for a minute of silence in honour of Access Holding Plc boss, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Doreen Chizoba, his son Chizzy and others who died in a helicopter crash in the United States.

Tinubu taking right steps to return Nigeria to greatness – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the federal government is steadfastly progressing towards restoring Nigeria to its former greatness.

Speaking at the weekend during The Sun Newspapers Awards in Lagos, Vice President Shettima, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of The Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, stressed the crucial role of the media as “watchdogs, truth-seekers, and the voice that informs and empowers our citizens.”

He however emphasized the crucial role the media must play in achieving this goal, calling for collaboration and a shared commitment to national progress.

In his speech titled, “Celebrating Excellence, Building Together: Our Commitment to Press Freedom and Media Development in Nigeria,” the Vice President noted that the media has the power to shape narratives, foster public discourse, and hold institutions accountable.

“Tonight we celebrate, not just the exceptional work of individual journalists, but also the collective contribution of the media to Nigeria’s progress.

“As partners in progress, you have the power to shape narratives, foster public discourse, and hold institutions responsible. Your dedication to investigative journalism, balanced reporting, and fact-checking is essential for a thriving democracy.”

Shettima advocated for collaboration and mutual respect between the media and government, stressing the need for the media to hold the government accountable, just as he called for transparency and open access to information to foster an environment where journalists can work freely and safely.

He further noted President Tinubu’s commitment to a vibrant press, recognizing that “a free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.”

While advocating press freedom, VP Shettima urged the media to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and avoid sensationalism to combat the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation.

The Vice President highlighted the recent strides by the federal government, including economic reforms, tackling security challenges, and investing in infrastructure, citing the removal of fuel subsidies, despite initial challenges, as yielding positive results with increased federal allocations to states.

“The government is commencing the implementation of the Pulaku Initiative, a large-scale resettlement programme aimed at addressing the root causes of farmers-herders conflicts. The initiative will revitalize the affected communities through the construction of residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities. I inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate the implementation of the initiative in fulfillment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to improve the lives of all Nigerians,” the Vice President said.

He said while nation-building is a collective endeavour, the citizens must come together and support the government in its efforts to build a truly great Nigeria.

The SGF said: “The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shall remain steadfast in its commitment to building a brighter future for all Nigerians, under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Shettima inaugurates panel on herder-farmer clash

The Federal Government yesterday inaugurated a steering committee to implement its ‘Pulaku Initiative aimed at addressing the root causes of farmer–herder clashes in the country.

Under the initiative, the government will construct houses, roads, schools and provide essential facilities in seven pilot states— Sokoto, Kebbi, Benue, Katsina, Zamfara, Niger and Kaduna.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who performed the ceremony in Abuja, explained that Pulaku represented one of the ways through which President Tinubu desires to fulfil his promise to improve the lives of all Nigerians.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ahmed   Dangiwa chairs the committee, which has representatives of governors of the benefiting states as some of the members.

Others include  Minister of Agriculture and Food Security  Abubakar Kyari; representatives of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Director- General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), BUA Group, Dangote Group and the Director-General of the National Emergency Agency(NEMA).

Shettima,  in a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity (Office of the Vice President),  Stanley Nkwocha, said Pulaku should be seen as an emergency to tackle a challenge that has threatened the fabric of Nigeria.

The statement partly reads: “The aim is to create an environment where the prosperity of our people is not just a distant dream but a tangible and achievable reality. This comprehensive approach reflects our dedication to fostering sustainable development and improving the lives of all citizens.

“The initiative will address a challenge that has persisted across various generations and demands our collective resolve, our optimum sense of justice, and unconditional compassion.

“This is not merely a response but a call to action. We are here because each of our programmes or policies will falter unless we get to the root of the dysfunctions we have inherited.”

Explaining the idea of focusing on the seven states, the Vice President said, “The selection of these states is a deliberate and strategic approach. The aim is to generate ripple effects that will not only revitalise communities but also lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and cohesive Nigeria.”

Shettima explained that the Pulaku resettlement is “a national commitment to confront a threat that has fuelled distrust and conflicts within communities and across the boundaries of our federation.

“This non-kinetic solution is not designed to compensate any particular group or region. Therefore, we must cast aside any notion of divisive regionalism and see the Pulaku initiative for what it truly is—a practical response to a shared challenge,” he added.

Urging all stakeholders to embrace the initiative, he said, “Let our legacy be measured not in the structures we build but in the lives we uplift, the unity we restore, and the collective strength of a nation rising above its challenges.”

The inauguration of the committee was witnessed by  Governors Hyacinth Alia  (Benue),    Uba Sani  (Kaduna)   Mohammed Bago (Niger), Nasir Idris  (Kebbi ),   Dikko Radah   (Katsina)    and  Dauda Lawal   (Zamfara).

Shettima stated this while reacting to the outcome of the finals between Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire, in a statement by his Media Aide, Mr Stanley Nkwocha, in Abuja.

He stated that the tournament had served as a powerful platform to showcase the potential and resilience of Africa.

” It has reminded us of the importance of teamwork, dedication, and the unwavering spirit that defines our continent.”
