FG plans formalisation of 1m businesses at discounted rate – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday, January 9, announced the federal government’s plans to formalise one million businesses across Nigeria at a discounted rate.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.

According to the statement, Shettima disclosed the plan when he launched the Expanded National MSME Clinic in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, marking the first stop on a nationwide journey to empower small and medium-sized businesses.

MSME Clinic, the first of its kind under the President Bola Tinubu administration, was designed to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by breaking down barriers and providing crucial resources.

Benue’s pioneership of the MSME Clinic sets the stage for a nationwide rollout scheduled to traverse Ebonyi, Ogun, Delta, Kaduna, Borno, Katsina States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a meticulously planned itinerary for the first half of 2024.

This will culminate in the National MSME Awards, a fitting celebration of entrepreneurial spirit coinciding with World MSME Day, on June 27, 2024 in Abuja.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of entrepreneurs and stakeholders at the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) Square in Makurdi, Vice President Shettima emphasised the federal government’s commitment to creating a thriving MSME ecosystem.

Stating that his principal, President Tinubu, is committed to resolving the bottlenecks affecting the MSME space in Nigeria and will persist until these issues are resolved, the VP noted that the N75 billion loan scheme from Bank of Industry (BOI) and Access Bank’s discounted N50 billion fund offer is already in place as crucial financial support for entrepreneurs.

He said: “we currently have in place a N75 billion 9% single-digit loan from BOI. Additionally, Access Bank has made N50 billion of their fund available to MSMEs at a discounted rate of 15%, which could significantly increase based on loan performance. Mr. President is committed to resolving the bottlenecks affecting the MSME space in Nigeria and will persist until these issues are resolved.”

The Vice President hailed the state’s industrious spirit and entrepreneurial drive, describing it as a “beacon of inspiration” for the entire country.

This hub will be ready in 90 days,” the Vice President stated.

Earlier in his address, the state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, declared that Benue State is open for business, just as he emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting and empowering small and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) as a key driver of economic growth.

He also celebrated Aorkwagh Farms’ work in regenerative farming and the “Made in Benue” brand’s creativity as examples of the state’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Governor Alia, who lauded their contributions to local agriculture, healthy living and cultural heritage however acknowledged the challenges faced by MSMEs, including insecurity, regulatory hurdles, and access to finance.

He assured participants that his administration was actively tackling these issues by streamlining processes, removing bottlenecks and enacting laws against extortion, including “matching ground.”

Also, Benue State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Orpin Alumo, noted that the MSMEs Clinic will mark the turning around of Benue State, moving it from a civil service state to an industrial state.

Other dignitaries at the MSME Clinic Launch included Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Aondona Dajoh; Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese; members of the National and State Assemblies, and members of the State Executive and Security Council, among others.

Tinubu determined to end Southeast reign of terror – Shettima

    • Says those behind security crisis self-serving criminals

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday spoke of  the determination of President Bola Tinubu to end the reign of terror in the South East.

Shettima called the brains behind the incessant security threats in the region as self-serving criminals and persons taking advantage of the security situation to foster their dangerous political agenda.

He spoke in Bende, Abia State, during the unveiling of the Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), ,an initiative of   House of Representatives Deputy Speaker  Benjamin  Kalu.

Tinubu, according to the Vice President, has “been concerned about the extensive economic devastation inflicted by non-state actors on this beautiful region since we took office.

“He is acutely aware that our commitment to Nigeria’s future remains incomplete as long as we grapple with the sinister operations of economic saboteurs who masquerade as advocates for the Ndi-Igbo.”

Shettima’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha further quoted him as saying: “”That’s why he’s determined to utilize all available resources to ensure that the peace we’re establishing in this region is not cosmetic, and we can’t guarantee it unless all of us see through the falsehoods and propaganda that have become weapons against our unity.”

Senator Shettima noted that the gory activities of the criminals holding the South East captive are self-serving and do not in any way represent the interests of Ndi-Igbo and the entire country.

He said the terror groups are not a creation of the people of the region, or of Nigerians from other parts of the country.

“The problem we are here to solve as a community, as an Umunna, is a creation of self-serving criminals who do not represent the interests of the Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians. Mr. President knows this better than all of us, and that’s why he has never held any group accountable for the infractions of law-breaking individuals who identify as their members. This, I believe, is the democracy we have all chosen,” he said.

Pointing out that the criminals disrupting the peace in the South-East were doing so in connivance with “forces exploiting the situation for dangerous political agenda,” the Vice President said attempts to undo the hard work of the nation’s heroes past would fail.

He maintained, however, that the catastrophic situation would not be reversed unless the government involved the people.

“Today, we stand united to firmly declare: enough is enough,” VP Shettima stated, stressing the need for a coordinated intervention to tackle insecurity in the region head-on, even as he assured the South East people that the Tinubu administration “shall not rest until it fulfills its pledge to mitigate the crisis” it inherited.

Noting that no better visionary could  save the nation from implosion than President Tinubu, he said the development agenda of the federal government in the South East would  continue to elude the region if “the intricate web of security challenges” the Tinubu-led federal government inherited was not contained.

“The seeds of progress can only sprout in the fertile soil of peace and security. This is why we take immense pride in the collaboration of all stakeholders and initiatives such as the Peace in South East Project, to ensure that the shield of security in the region isn’t a distant mirage in the landscape of aspirations,” the VP said.

He commended the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and convener of the peace initiative, Hon. Kalu, for his efforts to restore lasting peace in the South East, just as he said the event underscored  ” the profound understanding that no one comprehends the experience of a community better than the people  themselves.”

Earlier, Kalu said the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) was designed to  foster peace, unity, and development in the region as well as promoting reconciliation among communities and individuals affected by past conflicts.

His words:”When I embarked on the South East Project, my vision was clear — to foster peace, unity, and development in our region through a non-kinetic approach.

“The South East has long been known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant communities, and enterprising people. Yet, we have faced our fair share of challenges, including socio-economic disparities, insecurities, political tensions, and occasional conflicts.

“Our goals in the South East Project are clear. We aim to promote reconciliation among communities and individuals affected by past conflicts. We recognize the need to address the root causes of conflict, including socio-economic disparities and political tensions. Empowering communities is another crucial goal of the project, providing them with the necessary resources, skills, and opportunities for sustainable development,” said the Deputy Speaker.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the South East Governor’s Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, commended the Vice President for his sufficient goodwill to the people of the South East.

Uzodimma who is also Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) said: “Our Vice President has shown sufficient goodwill to the people of the South East. From this part of the country, we will continue to work with the rest of Nigeria to make the country a prosperous nation for the interest of all of us for service to God and humanity.”

On his part, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said, “We the people of the South East hereby declare that peace is what we stand for as a region.

“We declare peace and prosperity, we declare peace for progress, we stand for peace in the South East as a catalyst that will drive growth in all sectors of the economy and rekindle the confidence of future generations. We declare that peace is better,” the Abia governor submitted.

Other dignitaries present at the event were  Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Gilbert Onyekachukwu Ibezim; Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Others were Senator Osita Izunaso; Kano State APC governorship candidate, Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna; former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Chief Henry Ikoh; the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Highness, Nnaemeka Achebe; the Ooni of Ife, His Royal Highness, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha; former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday assured Nigerians that the Bola Tinubu administration will ensure that victims of attacks in Plateau State communities get justice and the residents’ lives and property are safe and secured.

A statement in Abuja by his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha said Shettima gave the assurance when he visited Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State to condole with the people and government over the killings.

He said: “Now, please, accept our heartfelt condolences. Please, accept our deepest apologies because we won’t rest until you access justice and until you are safe.”

Shettima stressed that the President “is deeply shaken by this tragedy and shares in this unspeakable sorrow that has shattered the joy of Christmas across the country”.

He added: “When one community bleeds, the entire nation feels the pain. The pain we feel now transcends ethnicity or religion, geography or politics. The grief that binds us is a testament to our shared humanity, not differences.”

The Vice President described the attacks as nightmarish, saying it was traumatising to bury family members in such a circumstance.

“We cannot fathom the depth of this grief beyond the experience of the bereaved. We can only offer to assuage your pain. What has happened to you is a funeral for the entire nation. Our hearts bleed alongside yours, our dear brothers and sisters in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, and all over Plateau State,” he said.

Shettima assured the people that the Tinubu administration would protect them and ensure justice, though it might appear to some people that the government had failed them in their time of serious need.

The Vice President stressed that justice is the path to collective safety, unity, and healing of the nation.

“We came to power promising to uphold the sanctity of every citizen’s life. Now is the time to reassure you that this inter-community violence, which has hijacked the humanity and serenity of this beautiful state over the past decades, will never persist under our watch.

“We will harness all our resources to bring those responsible to justice. We will not rest until we are able to prevent the recurrence of these heinous acts.

“Your blood, your tears, and your cries stain our collective conscience. We are here for you; we are here, resolute in our commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of these mindless killings face the full force of the law,” he said.

Also, mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), expressed sadness over the attack on Plateau communities.

The forum urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in banditry-prone communities.

A statement yesterday in Kaduna by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, reads: “The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has been greatly saddened by the attack by terrorising gangs on communities in Plateau State, on December 23, 2023, tragically resulting in the death of over 100 persons with many injured.

“In terms of their gruesome impact on lives and property, the attack adds to sad memories of the bombing incident at Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, and, by rampaging bandits in Zurmi, Zamfara State, both within just weeks apart.

“ACF mourns the dead and commiserates with the injured. The forum condoles with families of the victims and prays to God to grant the deceased eternal rest, as well as to fortify the faith of those left behind so they remain stoic and bear the losses with equanimity.

“ACF equally prays for quick recovery for of the traumatised and injured. Without downplaying worrisome incidents of insecurity elsewhere in the country, ACF wishes to draw attention to how such attacks serve as graphic reminders about the parlous state of security of citizens in Arewa communities and elsewhere in general. ACF reiterates its stance that every such incident is one too many.”

Also, transition committee chairmen in 17 local government areas of Plateau State have condemned the attacks on residents of Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin-Ladi local government areas of the state.

The local government chairmen, under the aegis of the Association of local government (ALGON), spoke through its Chairman Hamisu Anani, who is also the Chairman of Wase Local Government Area.

They said the renewed attacks across the communities, especially those of Christmas Eve, called for united efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

In statement in Jos, the state capital, ALGON said the coordinated attacks on more than 20 villages led to the death of over 100 persons and displacement of hundreds of others with destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

The association hailed Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his prompt response and repeated calls to security agencies to find a lasting solution to such attacks.

It also hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the Army to secure many parts of the country that were hitherto under severe insecurity.

Also, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed concern over the attack in Plateau State.

He urged the government to move beyond condemnation and implement enhanced security measures.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the eighth National Islamic Vocational Course organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium yesterday in Bauchi, the Sultan said there was a need to address the escalating insecurity in the country.

He said: “For some of us who are opportune to serve in the military, we know what the activities of these security agencies are. So, we keep on asking questions about what is really happening. Things are politicized, and that is the worst way to go when you politicise insecurity. We are all in one big country where we have poverty. Yes.

“We always condemn such things, but after condemning such activities by these bandits and criminals, what next? What are the roles of the governments that are supposed to protect lives and property? Why can’t we be proactive and stop such attacks before they happen? What happened to our intelligence-gathering mechanism?

“Let’s wake up. The time for deep slumber is over.”

Also, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Miyetti  Allah, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have condoled with the government and people of Plateau State over the killing of over 100 persons in about 26 villages.

A condolence message to Governor Caleb Mutfwang by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, yesterday in Abuja, reads: “My heart bleeds at the barbaric and well-coordinated attacks by supposedly human beings against the hapless and peaceful people of Plateau State. I condole with the governor, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang, the government, and the people of the state over this tragedy.

“I sympathise, particularly with the bereaved families, and I wish those who sustained injuries a quick recovery.

“While I pray God to grant those who lost their lives eternal rest, I implore the security agencies to redouble their efforts in the quest to restore law and order and track down the assailants to face the full weight of the law.”
