    18-year-old shot dead by hunter

    An 18-year-old man, Toheeb Akinbowale, was mistakenly shot dead by a member of the Nigerian Hunter and Forest Security Service (NHFSS).

    The accused, identified as James, 28, reportedly discharged his double-barrel rifle, accidentally hitting Akinbowale.

     The young man was immediately rushed to Ifako Ijaiye Hospital for emergency medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff members, he died.

    Two others, identified as Sodeeq and another unnamed person, were also injured during the incident. They are receiving treatment at General Hospital, Ikeja, where their condition remains unclear at this time.

    The police detectives responded to the scene, where photographs were taken, and the weapon, a double-barrel rifle, was recovered. James was arrested and is in police custody pending further investigation.

    Akinbowale’s body has been deposited at the Ikeja mortuary.

  • Civil Defence official ‘shot dead’ in Ekiti

    Residents of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, were yesterday in a state of shock and sadness, following the death of a man identified as an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    He was reportedly shot dead by yet to be identified persons.

    The Nation learnt that the incident occurred around 6:15am when the man, said to be driving along Ado-Ikere Highway, was shot.

    The incident, which created panic, occurred in front of the popular Tosin Aluko Motor Park, Ajilosun, in Ado-Ekiti.

    It was gathered that the deceased was shot in the head and stomach by his assailants.

    As at 9am when reporters visited the scene, the man was lying in a pool of blood.

  • Robbery suspect shot dead in Ogun

    The operatives of Ogun State Police Command yesterday shot dead a member of a five-man robbery syndicate at Ibara Housing Estate in Abeokuta, the state capital.

    According to a press statement signed by the spokesman of the state police command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, the hoodlums  at about 1 am allegedly invaded a compound housing 12 flats with dangerous weapons and started dispossessing occupants of their valuable properties.

    ‘’In the course of their operation, a distress call was made to the police by a neighbour, on the strength of which the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Iliyasu promptly directed the officer in charge of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad( FSARS) Mr Uba Adams, to quickly move to the scene and rescue the situation.’’

    Oyeyemi disclosed that a member of the gang was killed during a gun battle with FSARS operatives, while others escaped with gunshot injuries.

    The statement added: ‘’The items recovered from the gang include GSM handsets,  four laptops computers, wallets and other valuables belonging to residents of the building. The victims of the robbery were full of praises for the operatives of FSARS for their quick response to their distress call.

    ‘’Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered  massive manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang with a view to bringing them to justice within the shortest possible time.’’

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has been thrown into mourning, following the killing of the Treasurer, Mr. Moses Adeoye, on Wednesday night.

    He was reportedly shot dead in his home in Otun-Ekiti, the headquarters of Moba Local Government, when having supper.

    The gunmen were said to have invaded Adeoye’s home about 9pm and shot the victim.

    He was killed a few hours after returning to Otun-Ekiti after being part of the town hall meetings held by Governor Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti North and Ekiti South senatorial districts.

    Adeoye was the APC chairman in his local government before he became the treasurer at the state congress in September.

    Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu said the command had begun investigation.

    He said the suspects would soon be nabbed.

    The state chapter of the APC has expressed shock at the killing of a member of the State Working Committee (SWC).

    The Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, said the exco had paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.

    He said in a statement yesterday that the Chairman, Mr. Paul

    Omotoso, described Adeoye as a responsible, honest and committed party man and prayed that such incident would not happen again.

    Ajayi quoted Omotoso as describing the killing of the treasurer as a “terrible blow” to Governor Kayode Fayemi, APC, members and Moba people.

    The APC Chairman in Moba Council, Mr. Femi Adeyeye, described the incident as a “rude shock” to APC members and residents of the community.

    He urged the government and the party not to forget the family of the slain Adeoye.

    APC delegation from the state exco paid a condolence visit to

    the Oore of Moba land, Oba James Adedapo Popoola, in his palace in Otun-Ekiti.

    Omotoso urged the monarch to seek solace in God on the loss of a prominent son of the community, saying the party would do everything to bring the killers to book.

    Oba Popoola thanked the APC leaders for the visit, noting that the incident had created an injury in the hearts of the people that would take time to heal.

    Fayemi urges police to fish out killers

    EKITI State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi has directed security agencies to fish out the killers of the treasurer of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Elder Moses Adeoye.

    He was killed by gunmen at his Otun-Ekiti home on Wednesday night.

    Adeoye, who was until recently was the chairman of the party in Moba Local Government, was trailed to his home by the gunmen, who shot him in the presence of his family.

    The governor had upon hearing the sad news, directed security agencies to ensure that the killers were arrested and prosecuted.

    Dr. Fayemi vowed to get to the root of the matter, stressing that anyone found to be connected with the killing would be dealt with.

    He said his administration would work with security agencies to stop killings and violence.

    Meanwhile, the governor has commiserated with the deceased’s family, assuring them of justice.

    Dr. Fayemi, who was out of the state on official duty when the incident occurred, described the death of the APC chieftain as sad and devastating.  He pledged government’s support for the family.

    The governor’s condolence message was delivered to the family by a delegation comprising the Secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji, Chief of Staff, Biodun Omoleye and Chief Alaba Abejide.

    The delegation later visited the palace of Oore of Otun, Oba Adedapo Oladele Popoola and the party secretariat, where they also delivered the governor’s condolence message.

     

  • Suspected cultist shot dead

    A man described as a cult leader has been killed in a gun battle with policemen at Ishashi, Ojo, Lagos.

    Olamide Oloruntobi, 31, was said to be the leader of Aiye cult in the area.

    The Nation learnt that he was killed about 8:50pm, on Tuesday at Durosooto Street, New Mebamu, Ishasi.

    He was said to have led some hoodlums to terrorise residents when information got to the Ishasi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Amuda Abolaji, a Superintendent (SP).

    Abolaji led policemen to the area and engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle.

    Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), in a statement yesterday, said the hoodlums opened fire on the police.

    He said: “His (Oloruntobi’s) locally-made pistol with a live ammunition has been recovered, while the body has been deposited at the Badagry General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

    “Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal has directed the DPO to arrest fleeing members of the gang. He has equally directed the head of the Intelligence Unit of the Command to assist the DPO in that regard.

    “The CP said the death of a cultist is not a thing of joy. He advised parents and community leaders to prevail on their children who are members of these unlawful groups, to renounce cultism and surrender their weapons to the police.

    “He added that he will receive them and together with other stakeholders, ensure their reintegration into the society.”

  • Ex-Katsina commissioner shot dead

    Gunmen, on Sunday, killed a former Katsina State Commissioner for Education, Prof Halimatu Sa’adiyya Idris, on the Kaduna Abuja highway.

    A statement yesterday by the ministry’s spokesman, Salisu Lawal Kerau, said she and other motorists were attacked near Bussa village, between Jere and Kateri communities.

    Prof Idris, 60, was appointed commissioner in November, 2015.

    While in office, she received the Kwame Nkrumah Exemplary Leadership Award of Excellence in recognition of her contribution to development of education.

    She was, however, relieved of her duties on December 27, purportedly for her statement which called for teachers to write aptitude tests.

    It was learnt she wanted to sanitise the education system by ensuring that only qualified teachers, with requisite English and related skills, teach in public schools.

    Her statement at the time raised dust, with many calling for her ousting.

    The statement added that burial rites held yesterday afternoon in Unguwar Sarki, Kaduna State.

    Controversial young rapper XXXTentacion has been shot dead in what appeared to be a robbery on Monday. The incident occurred in Broward County, Florida, US.

    The 20 year old whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was leaving a motorsports store shortly before 4pm when two men in a dark coloured SUV shot and killed him in an apparent robbery, said Keyla Concepción, Broward County sheriff department public information officer.

    Broward County deputies are actively looking for the two men and asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward, Concepción said.

    XXXTentacion, a Plantation, Florida, native, rocketed to fame after his song “Look at Me” went viral on social media and audio distribution platform SoundCloud in 2016.

    His latest album “?” premiered at No. 1 when it was released in March, according to Billboard’s website. The album’s single “Sad!” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 15 weeks on the charts, according to Billboard.

    At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial for a domestic violence incident involving his pregnant girlfriend, according to court documents. And he had been under house arrest for a time while he awaited trial on battery and harassment charges. The house arrest was lifted in March, according to Miami-Dade court documents. He had pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts, including witness tampering.

    No one to shy away from controversy, his ‘Look At Me’ was criticised for a scene which depicted the rapper lynching a white boy. The video also referenced flashpoints in the national debate on race such as the 1991 Rodney King beating, the lynching in Mississippi of 14-year-old Emmett Till in 1955, the 2014 Ferguson, Missouri riots, the police shooting of Philando Castile in Minnesota in 2016 and the 2017 Charlottesville, Virginia, violence. At the end of the video, XXXTentacion spoke about violence and American youth.

    XXXTentacion was expelled from middle school for fighting, but he channelled his energy and fury into music. He quickly became the most popular artist in the genre known as SoundCloud Rap and, by October 2017, he had scored a distribution agreement reportedly worth $6m (£4.5m).

    Top celebrities took to social media to react to news of XXXTentacion’s death.

    Kanye West shared his condolences, saying “Rest in peace I never told you how much you inspired me when you were here thank you for existing.”

    Juicy J also tweeted his thoughts, saying “Prayers up for @xxxtentacion” and “R.I.P. Xxxtentacion.”

    Tyga, a California rapper signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, tweeted, “so sad to lose good artist. My heart dropped when I heard about @xxxtentacion, I feel like we only got to see a glimpse of his artistry. I didn’t know him personally but I respect how passionate he was about his music and message. Nobody deserves this kind of ending. gone too soon, damn! RIP.”

    Also tweeting, Big Sean wrote, “I feel like we only got to see a glimpse of his artistry,” Big Sean said. “I didn’t know him personally but I respect how passionate he was about his music and message. Nobody deserves this kind of ending. gone too soon, damn! RIP.”

    And rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine also took to Instagram to wax philosophical about XXXTentacion’s death.

    “Tomorrow’s not promised … you could be here today and be gone tomorrow,” he said. “X spread nothing but positivity.”

    A fleeing robbery suspect has been shot dead in Ogun State by the Operatives of the Federal Special Anti – Robbery Squad (FSARS) attached to Magbon, Abeokuta.

    The suspect was escaping with the Lexus RX 350 SUV after he and his gang snatched it on gun point at Oke – Ilewo area of Abeokuta, the state capital.

    It was gathered that FSARS Commander, Uba Adam, was detailed to arrest the suspects following a distress call to the Police.

    It was learnt that all FSARS Operatives manning various exit points in the state were alerted to be on lookout for the snatched vehicle and the suspects.

    However, the search for the suspects paid off last Thursday when the gang ran into the FSARS team stationed along Sango Ota area, who sighted the said SUV being driven and chased after it.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made these known in a release, stated that the robbers in a bids to escape the F- SARS’ chase, opened fire on the operatives.

    Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, added that the officers engaged the gang, explaining at the end of the encounter, one of the robbers was fatally injured, arrested and taken to the State hospital, Ijaye but died later while receiving treatment.

    He listed one AK49 assault rifle loaded with 13 rounds of live ammunition and the snatched Lexus RX 350 Jeep marked LSD 456 E X as items recovered theme.

    Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who lauded F -SARS team for their bravery, charged them not to rest until fleeing members of the gang were arrested and brought to book.

    Two suspected kidnappers shot dead in Ogun

    Two suspected kidnappers have been shot dead by operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FEDSARS) in Ogun State.

    The kidnappers were said to have engaged FEDSARS operatives in gun battle on Thursday, in a bid to rescue an abducted woman.

    It was learnt that two locally-made single barreled guns and four live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

    The incident according to spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi started at about 1:00pm when a distress call was made to the Police that one Mrs Ajayi, a pastor’s wife had been kidnapped along Abeokuta Ibadan road.

    ”The woman who boarded a taxi going to Eleweran was forcibly taken to an area of Odeda where she was taken to a bush and held hostage. The kidnappers there and then put a call across to her pastor husband informing him that his wife is in their custody and that a sum of N2million should be paid for her release.

    ”The pastor quickly informed the Police, consequent upon which the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu gave a marching order to the officer in-charge FSARS, Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP) Uba Adam to go after the hoodlums, rescue the victim and apprehend the suspects.”

    He added: ”In compliance with CP’s directive, the O/C FSARS led his men to the bush where the suspects were technically traced to, and engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 45 minutes.

    ”At the end of the encounter, two members of the syndicate were shot and arrested but gave up the ghost on the way to hospital. One Policeman was also injured and undergoing treatment in an hospital while the victim was rescued unhurt.”

    Final-year student shot dead in viewing centre

    Suspected hoodlums, Tuesday night, stormed a popular viewing centre, Kaneworld Resort in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, and shot dead a final-year student of University of Uyo (UNIUYO).

    Dominic Ubiat, a Microbiology student, was watching the UEFA Champions League with other viewers.

    It was gathered that about three criminals stormed the viewing centre at 17, Idak Okpo lane,  a few minutes to the end of the matches involving some European clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich.

    The gunmen ordered viewers to lie down while searching for their target.

    “When they ordered everyone to lie down, the deceased struggled with his Infinix phone and was shot at close range”, Effiong Akpan, a Manchester United fan said.

    According to him, the late Ubiat, from Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, was shot on his groin.

    “He managed to run from the viewing centre and was chased by the hoodlums to his house, located about 500 metres,” another fan recalled.

    The Nation learnt that he was taken to hospital where medics confirmed he died from loss of blood.

    His parents, who visited the scene yesterday, lamented that all the years of their son in the school was in vain and vowed to go the extra mile to avenge the death of their son.

    “Look at the blood of my son”, Mr. Ubiat lamented, vowing that “the blood of my son shall haunt those behind this dastardly act of cowardice”.

    The deceased’s mother, accompanied by other relations, wondered why her son could be left to die after being shot.

    “From every indication, help did not come early enough, otherwise my son would have survived if he had been rushed to hospital on time”, she lamented.

    Police spokesman Elkana Bala, a deputy superintendent (DSP), described the incident as “a pure robbery attack.”

    He said police “were still trailing them (the culprits).”

    He urged parents to instil the essential values in their children, noting that “a situation whereby a student is seen at wrong places in the wee hours of the night left much to be desired.

    “In this kind of situation, there is little the police could do because anybody must work towards helping himself first”, he said.

    He advised the public to always shun danger-prone areas at nights, adding: “As I am now, I don’t go to clubs. I watch football in my house”.
