    Edo ACN chieftain shot

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Idiake Patrick Akhimien, has been shot by unknown gunmen.

He was shot in the back inside a bush while attempting to escape after the gunmen blocked his vehicle at the popular Mopo Junction in Ekpoma.

His younger brother, who was driving, and his police orderly were killed by the gunmen.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen shot at the vehicle, killing the victims instantly.

They said the gunmen, who drove in a Toyota Camry and an Audi 80, abducted Idiake’s wife and her two sisters.

The ACN chieftain was taken to the Irrua Specialist Hospital in Esan Central Local Government.

The remains of the victims have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

Following the attack, the House of Assembly passed a resolution calling on security agencies to increase surveillance at flash points on the Ekpoma-Auchi road.

This followed a motion by Ms Elisabeth Ativie, who said robberies have increased on the road.

Divisional Police Officer Okpako Omuohowo confirmed the incident.

Eleven people were shot yesterday in renewed sectarian violence at the boundary between Aguleri-Otu in Anambra State and Echonwa/Ideke in Kogi State.

A source in Aguleri-Otu told The Nation that there may be many casualties from both sides but he confirmed that three persons were hospitalised.

He said eight others had non-life threatening injuries, which have been taken care of by traditional doctors.

The Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Security, George Molokwu, confirmed the eruption of violence, which he described as skirmishes. He, however, played down the casualty figures.

Molokwu said: ’’ I am aware there were fresh skirmishes for two days now, on Saturday and on Sunday. I was told that two people were hospitalised. I have told the police to search for the hospital and give us a feedback.

‘’I am surprised that after the Kogi and Anambra governors have appealed for peace, the crisis has continued.

‘’They appealed to warring parties to lay down their arms and I am still surprised some people are creating tension. But I am joining Governor Peter Obi (Anambra) and Governor Idris Wada (Kogi) to appeal to the communities to lay down their arms in the interest of peace and unity.

‘’The skirmishes are deterring development of oil and gas in that zone and it is unfortunate. We want peace and everybody should give peace a chance.”

The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government, Chiedu Obidigwe, said 11 people were shot but three were hospitalised.

‘’My brother, things are beginning to take a dangerous shape. Yes, it is true 11 were shot and three have been hospitalised.

“I am sure there may be more than that but to be on safe side that is the position. There are casualties from Echonwa and Ideke but I did not get to their community to know the casualty rate and nobody called me from there.

‘’Ibaji Local Government in Kogi State has disobeyed the order of the two governors.

“The governors had advised the two communities to maintain the peace and stop going after each other until the National Boundary Commission (NBC) comes out with a stand on the issue.”

15 explosions rock Maiduguri as policeman is shot dead

The Borno state capital was under siege again last night. It witnessed massive, multiple explosions after a police traffic warden was killed.

The explosions believed to have occurred 15 times where the Boko Haram sect has killed hundreds of people, first took place at about 6.15pm. More blasts followed simultaneously in different areas for about 15minutes, showing that they might have been coordinated. Sporadic gun shots by security forces also followed. But the exact location could not be immediately ascertained.

The gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram men who shot dead the traffic warden, dared the heavy security presence at the Post Office area to carry out the action at about 1.30pm.

The incident caused pandemonium as residents, traders and motorists ran helter skelter. Riot policemen shot into the air. The entire area in the heart of the city was immediately deserted as security forces took position to forestall further tragedy.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) and the police were expected to speak on the explosions last night.
