  • Ortom to Akume: showcase your achievements

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has challenged Senator George Akume to showcase his achievements in his 11 years sojourn as a senator “instead of castigating me at every opportunity”.

“Akume should showcase his score card. He has been in the senate for more than 11 years, and the constituents want to hear what he has done. He appears obsessed with abusing me every minute; that is not what the people want to hear,” Ortom told reporters yesterday in Makurdi.

The governor spoke through his media aide, Tahav Agerzua, at a special interaction with reporters.

He said: “The man (Akume) keeps insulting me at every turn. But, while he is raising questions about me, more questions are being raised about whether he has been an asset or liability to the people.

“Nobody should boast that he can make someone governor; only God can do that. Mr Aper Aku became the first civilian governor without anyone’s support; Rev. Fr Moses Adasu moved from the Church to the Government House without a political godfather.

“So, it is wrong for anyone to claim that he made me governor and could unseat me.”

The governor dismissed claims he gave N2 billion to eight governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He wondered where such money could have come from.

He rejected claims he is afraid to contest the PDP governorship primary, saying he won the primary before picking the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014.

The governor alleged Akume is struggling to pit him against PDP governorship aspirants because he rejected the automatic ticket offered by the APC.

“PDP will not force Ortom on its members. Let all aspirants canvass for votes from the delegates and refrain from media wars,” he said.

The governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Cultural Development, James Bemgbator Mede, has resigned his appointment. He vowed to remain in APC.

Mede, who was at the APC secretariat in Makurdi, cited the absence of focused political ideology and synergy of political participation among appointees as reasons for his resignation.

He said he could not continue to work with “strange bed fellows”.

The ex-special assistant  vowed not to leave APC, and thanked the governor for giving him the opportunity to work, even as he promised to work hard for the victory of APC.

  • Nollywood Travel Festival makes debut with Toronto showcase

Nollywood Travel Festival makes debut with Toronto showcase

Following the reception given eight Nigerian films by foreign delegates at the last Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Canada, an idea of a Nollywood Travel Festival was born, with a broader aim of promoting Nigerian films, music and tourism as a pack.

The idea is the brainchild of President of the African Film Consortium (AFC), Mykel Parish and CEO of Native Media, Rogers Ofime.

Shedding more light on the initiative at a press conference which held at the Ojez Restaurant, National Theatre, last Tuesday, co-founder of the festival, Parish, noted that the time is now to make more fans and money by taking the country’s film and tourism around the world.

According to him, “Nollywood Travel Festivals is an initiative that seeks to promote films by Nigerians living all over the world to new and existing global audiences with the aim of creating new market places for Nigerian cinema. We will showcase the best films ever made in Nigeria and create an adventure for filmmakers, while opening platforms and markets for filmmakers, Nigerian music, comedy and tourism.”

Parish who added that the Nigerian movie sector was one that practitioners should be proud of and showcase everywhere in the world, said; “Nollywood is the bedrock of films in Africa. But more people need to know what we are doing. Many of our films are already exposed by pirates.  In Canada, some people said they watched Nollywood more than they did Hollywood. So, this festival will strengthen this position and help producers to sell more films across the globe.”

He disclosed that the maiden edition of the Nollywood Travel Festival will hold in Toronto, Canada, from May 5-7, 2017.

In the words of Parish’s partner, Ofime, the Festival’s vision is to become a platform for the advancement of Nollywood and the realization of commercially viable entertainment industry for Nigeria. “The Nollywood Travel Festival celebrates the best of Nigerian cinema and will be hosted in major cities around the world. It will be a weekend of special indoor and outdoor screenings, inspiring discussions, meeting, parties and awards,” he said.

The unveiling ceremony of the festival was attended by notable industry stakeholders like filmmaker Andy Boyo, PMAN’s Pretty Okafor, Association of Movie Producer’s Chinasa Onychere and culture journalist and film critic, Shaibu Husseini.

According to Husseini, there were few travel festivals in the world, thus, the Nollywood Travel Festival is a welcome development.

He expressed optimism that the initiative will properly internationalise Nollywood. “It will change the perspectives that Nollywood is about quantity and not quality as it will expose very good works from Nigeria, unlike the cheap ones that many would have seen. When we take our best films out, the perspective will definitely change. Of course, the festival will also give our filmmakers more opportunity to travel,” he said.

Meanwhile, organisers have announced that entries are opened to filmmakers who desire to showcase their works at the festival. The films, which must have been released in 2016, must be shot in Nigeria or Canada by a Nigerian director with plot relating to Nigeria or Nigeria in Canada.

The said deadline to receive film via online or DVD(along with posters design, synopsis, director’s bio and photo) is Jan 16, 2017, while selected films will be announced on January 20, 2017.

  • Kids showcase bus design at One Lagos brand launch

Kids showcase bus design at One Lagos brand launch

Caught a glimpse of a couple of radiantly designed LagBuses with childlike creativity? That is the work of some select schools kids in Lagos, as initiated by prolific artist, Polly Alakija towards the Lagos at 50 celebration. Gboyega Alaka witnessed their first official outing at the ‘One Lagos’ brand launch and reports.

As the bells toll and the countdown to the Lagos at 50 celebration hots up, many individuals and organisations are keying in into the celebration, which seems to have begun in earnest with the official launch of the ‘One Lagos’ brand by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode last week.

One such person is famed artist in residence, Polly Alakija, who is taking school kids on the journey. Alakija is revving up kids in some select primary schools across Lagos to be part of the historic event through her art initiative aimed at getting the kids to unleash their creativity on a few Lagbuses otherwise known as BRT and tell their own version of the Lagos story.

Collaborating with the Lagos State Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the LagBus management, Alakija hopes to get the kids to be part of the celebration by creatively designing up to five buses that will uniquely capture how they perceive Lagos in their innocent minds. One bus with designs fully completed and bearing the colourful creations of the kids of Archbishop Taylor Memorial Primary School and Kuramo Primary School both on Victoria Island, was on display on Day 1 of the official launch of the ‘One Lagos’ brand at the former bar beach Arcade, Victoria Island.

The proud kids of both schools eagerly rode on the bus in the short ride between their schools and the Bar Beach venue and it was without doubt a thing of pride as heads turned and people marvelled at what the kids have been able to come up with.

Even Tourism, Arts and Culture commissioner, Folarin Coker could not hide his admiration as he openly extolled the kids creativity and engaged them in lively conversations.

According to Alakija, “Lagos turning 50 is an event for anybody who’s got anything to do with Lagos. So we are doing something to celebrate Lagos. The kids for instance are completely blank about Lagos turning 50. But all schools should be doing something to celebrate Lagos. I just wanted to do something that is positive fun. What are those things  that bring Lagos together? That’s what the One Lagos brand is about and that’s what the kids have tried to capture in their innocence.

“We thought it will be a great idea to get the kids involved. So I thought what we can do is to get the kids to do a design. Each school get to design one LagBus. Right now we have one bus, but it’s work in progress. Because it’s a new concept, we really hope to get the right support. So I’m now hoping that people will begin to understand what we’re trying to do. Of course people need to see what we have done with this bus to understand what we’re trying to achieve.”

Alakija however clarified that the initiative is entirely a private one, though enjoying the endorsement and support of the Tourism, Arts and Culture ministry. She said the initiative becomes even more important, when one considers the fact that the main focus of the ‘One Lagos’ project has been more of entertainment and tourism. So she said “The idea is to introduce art into the whole thing. If it’s coming under arts and culture, then it can’t just be entertainment alone.”

Beaming with pride, Alakija said the whole design on the bus is entirely a creation of the kids, adding that it just gives an insight into what the future holds.

Alakija says buses design is open to corporate sponsorship. “We’re looking forward to reaching out for corporate sponsorship. I’ve got a couple of corporate organisations already signed up. The total package is affordable in terms of sponsorship but the mileage is huge. We plan to have these buses on the road for one year, so you can imagine what that means. Hopefully, the next few buses will not just bear ‘One Lagos’ logo but that of sponsors.”

She however cautioned that it’s going to be soft branding and not one where a potential sponsor would hope to paint the whole bus in their brand colour, thereby obstructing the original concept.

Alakija is doing this with the support of some young volunteers: Kelvin Agboso, John Isreal,  Abayomi Olabode, Bankole Olabode and Ajaero Anthony Uchenna; most of whom are artists and students of Yaba College of Technology, and her amiable PA, Gbemisola Sasore.

The lads are of the GetReal team; a soft skills youth project, created and powered by Diana Yeside Johnson’s TMPL (Team Management Partnership Limited) to build conflict management, cultural diversity, self-awareness and self-worth and independence in young people.

According to Agboso, Isreal and Bankole,  their main contribution has been in guiding the kids and teaching them how to ‘draw, cut and paste,’ which they confess has been an amazing experience for them.

Bankole says “The designs have been more of Lagos and the things that makes the city tick, such as the Eyo masquerade, the yellow buses, molue buses and the people.”

Tourism, Arts and Culture commissioner, Folarin Coker, in a chat with reporters at the venue of the ‘One Lagos Brand Launch’ said the project was conceived to drive economic growth across the state, by taking advantage of the over 20million population strength, diverse culture and tourism potentials, which he said cut across entertainment, religion, business, leisure and even food.

He expressed delight that somebody in the calibre of Polly Alakija is complementing the whole project and countdown to Lagos at 50 celebration with her art initiative and especially getting the kids to be an integral part of it.

“The message of the artwork of the kids is evoking deep thought. Even though we have entertainment for adult, we have now been able to engage children.”

  • Farmers showcase products at fair

    Farmers showcase products at fair

The agricultural sector has recorded major achievements. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwunmi  Adesina, seized on the outing of farmers to showcase the impact of the sector’s contributions to the economy, reports, Alvin Afadama.

Last week, about 23,000 farmers from  across the country gathered to celebrate four years of the agricultural transformation turnaround in Nigeria.

The event, aptly tagged Agriculture Festival 2015 (AGRIFEST 2015), brought farmers from the North West, Southwest, Northcentral, Southsouth, Northeast, and Southeast.  The famers had a confident bearing about them, for in the past three years 14.5 million of them have received 1.3 million MT of fertiliser and 174,000 MT of improved seed, producing in return an additional 21 million MT of food with a net value of N778 billion. Our local agriculture sector was alive again, resulting  in food import decline from N1.1 trillion in 2009 to N634 billion in 2013.

Nigeria is also breaking new ground in wheat production.  Driven by the release of two tropical wheat varieties, productivity has risen from less than one MT/ha to five-six MT/ha.  Wheat production has risen 300 per cent fold from 80,000MT in 2011 to 240,000MT in 2014.  In the 2014/2015 dry season, the wheat growing season, 184MT of improved wheat seeds was given to farmers in 10 states of North West and North East  to produce 18,000MT of wheat seed of the new varieties to expand the area under these new varieties to 150,000MT by 2015/2016.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, said the living standard of farmers have changed as they now get better markets and higher prices from private companies as the products, among them  sorghum, are processed into high energy foods, breakfast cereals and malt drinks. He said cotton farmers are equally benefitting, given the fact that they are experiencing a dramatic change in their fortunes as a result of government’s support with improved cotton seeds and the revival of about 22 cotton ginneries, thus reducing imports, and as well creating wealth for rural communities.

With over N900 billion ($5 billion) of new agribusiness investments in all parts of the food value chain, Nigeria will soon become self-sufficient in food production, and eventually becoming a net exporter of food, the Minister, said.

AGRIFEST 2015 revealed that Nigeria is firmly on its way to becoming a global powerhouse in agriculture.  Because of the natural resources that God has so richly endowed the country with,  the new Nigerian agriculture sector has endless possibilities. The Agricultural Transformation Agenda, he said, has demonstrated that a truly great future lies ahead for the country.

The success story that is Nigeria’s agriculture today is corroborated by independent sources.  The 2013 wet season survey conducted by the National Agricultural Extension Research Liaison Service (NAERLS), revealed that fertilizer usage in the country is up nearly eight times, 108Kg/hectre in 2013 compared to13Kg/hectre in 2010.  The National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) at a recent stakeholders meeting also reported that the number of seed companies have risen from 11 in 2010 to 134 in 2014.  Usage of improved seeds of rice, maize, sorghum, soybean, and cotton has also grown from a meagre 4,252MT/year in 2010 to 149,484MT/year in 2013.  The NAERLS study also demonstrated that crop yields soared – on the wings of increased use of improved seeds and fertilizer. Rice yields doubled from 1.5MT/Ha in 2011 to 3MT/ha average during the wet season and 4MT/Ha during the dry season.  Maize yields also rose from 2MT/Ha to 3MT/Ha, and soybean increased from 0.7MT/Ha to 1.5MT/Ha.

At no time has a teeming number of Nigerians been more  interested in agriculture, whether at a commercial or subsistence level. The Federal Government  has embarked on an aggressive drive to re-direct the Nigerian economy, making agriculture a foreign exchange earner, as it was in the past.

Statistics of the impact of the agricultural-sector-turnaround on each of the individual crop and livestock value chains is evident in many sectors.  Between 2012 and 2014, an additional  seven million MT of rice paddy – five million MT of milled rice, was produced by six million rice farmers who received improved seeds and fertiliser.  Rice paddy production in 2014 was 10.7 million MT of paddy, or seven million MT of milled rice, representing a 100 per cent  increase over the production level recorded in 2011.

Nigeria is now at 85 per cent sufficiency in rice production.

Akinwunmi said high quality Nigerian rice now competes favourably with imported ones.  A new rice policy has also created incentives for erstwhile importers and new entrepreneurs to invest another $2.6billion in domestic rice production and milling.   .

Also, a total of 3.5million jobs have been added to the agricultural sector in the last three years.  The Consumer Price Index report of NBS for the month of November revealed that for three consecutive months,  food prices remained relatively flat.  Overall inflation decreased from 8.1 per cent to 7.9 per cent in November, last year due to food prices.  The bumper harvest from our Agricultural transformation created a buffer to hyper-inflation created by the fall in the value of the naira.

  • PAPDAN to showcase best of mobile innovation at expo

PAPDAN to showcase best of mobile innovation at expo

The Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association (PAPDAN) is set to showcase the best of mobile innovation at the Phone Expo Nigeria (PEN 2014) in Lagos next month.

Its Chairman Mr. Iyke Nwosu, said the influential trade group would leverage on the event to bring the best in mobile handsets, devices and technologies “under one roof for the benefit of Nigerian consumers.”

At a briefing, he said the event packaged by Technology Times Events, would feature exhibitions of latest mobile technologies and collate unique events at the annual gathering of the mobile ecosystem.

The PAPDAN head lauded the expo initiative, saying that it would offer members of the association a platform to connect with consumers.

“We also believe that PEN 2014 will enable PAPDAN to promote the mission of the association to promote the interest of Nigerian mobile consumers,” Nwosu said.

He  said the association had become a catalyst in the growing mobile telephony  sector.

PAPDAN, based at Ikeja Computer Village, Nigeria’s biggest technology market, has over 5000 members employing more than 25,000 across the mobile value chain, Mr. Nwosu said.

According to the chairman of PAPDAN, in Computer Village alone, members of the body recorded in excess of four million units of monthly sales of diverse handsets and devices to consumers coming from across states in the country and the West African sub-region.

“PAPDAN has been crucial to the growth of the mobile telephony market in Nigeria as our members were the first to introduce dual-SIM phones. The big brands were cynical at the time but they are all now playing catch-up to gain market share in the country,” Nwosu added.

He further said: “When we introduced dual-SIM phones, people were laughing but you can see that today, a lot of the established brands are also playing catch-up.”

Nwosu said insights gained from mobile phone market trends in Nigeria show that consumers need and preference continue to grow for latest technologies and innovative products.

“One factor that drives everybody is pricing. The market is highly price-dependent and driven but consumers still want phones with lots of functionalities. Most of the consumers are looking for cheap phones and brands within the N5000 to N15000 price range are the market leaders that we have seen”,  PAPDAN chief explained.

He said consumer preferences were also shifting towards android devices that “allow them to do a lot of things”, noting that there is increasing demand for bigger screens that allow them to watch videos on the devices.

Based on market insights, the PAPDAN chairman said consumers still ask for established global brands but several relatively newer players are recording impressive performance in Nigeria because they bundle good features and also compete on “good price points”.

According to him, brands that have been able to fit into the “affordable” device segments of the Nigerian market include Tecno, Gionee, Maxtel, G-Tide, Gowin, M-Horse, among others due to compete features and pricing.

Nwosu said Nokia is witnessing a market rebound as the number one in the device market with growing demand for its cheaper phones like the Nokia X, which bundles Windows Phone and Android OS.

According to him, “Nokia is now doing very well and has become number one because most of their sales are coming from the low-end phones.”

Tecno is considered number two in the mobile device segment because the brand fits very well within the affordable phones category ahead of Samsung, he said.

According to him, Samsung is number three and has gained market attraction with an aggressive marketing and introduction of new brands.

Nwosu believed that Gionee ranks fourth in Nigeria driven by price advantages, features and local “market consistency.”

He said: “PAPDAN activities in the areas of combating counterfeiting has increased consumer confidence and that is part of the message that we are bringing to the PEN 2014 Show.”

PAPDAN has prevailed on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to improve on the standards of phones shipped into Nigeria and establish Service Centres to provide support to consumers, he said.

“So far, PAPDAN has registered 46 brands that have met the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) standards for certification and packaging,” he added.

Ambassador, ministers support tourism showcase in Accra

The 2013 edition of the Ghana-Nigeria Tourism and Culture Showcase has continued to receive some big boost ahead of the event scheduled for April 18 to 19 at the Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana.

The confirmation by the Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, Ambassador Oluseyi Onafowokan, as the chief host of the event further adds to the list of very high profile personalities that have so far declared their support for the tourism and culture event.

Also the Ghanan’s Minister of Culture and Traditional Affairs, Dr Henry Seidu Daana, has expressed the support of the government and people of Ghana for the Ghana-Nigeria Tourism and Culture Showcase 2013 just as Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Aggyare, Ghana’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, has given the assurance of her ministry during a courtesy visit by the event organisers.

The event now in its second edition and credited to be unarguably not just the first privately organized bilateral arts, tourism and culture forum in the West African sub-region, but as the most prestigious, best attended and biggest Private Public Partnership (PPP) collaboration for arts, tourism and culture in the sub-region.It is geared towards promoting Africa’s tourism potential as well as the restoration and sustenance of the people’s cultural heritage.

Confirming his willingness to play host to the event on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Ambassador Onafowokan told a delegation of Tribe Media Company, Nigeria and Pan Africa Ghana which paid him a courtesy visit at the Nigerian High Commission that the government was especially committed to the promotion of Nigeria’s diplomatic cultural policy at such a crucial time the nation is marking her centenary.

The High Commissioner further assured the team led by Bayero Agabi, President of Tribe Media and Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, President of Pan Africa Ghana, co-organisers of the event, that the Nigerian House in Ghana would gladly host a cocktail in honour of the Nigerian contingent to the event, adding that the bilateral tourism and culture initiative was one that should be sustained given that both countries share so much in common.

In a related development, Dr Daana also expressed the support of the government and people of Ghana for the showcase. The Minister stated this at his office while playing host to the event organizers recently in Accra. Dr Henry Daana pointed out that the close socio-political and historical tie between both countries was a good basis to annex the cultural values of the two nations for socio-economic development and bilateral growth. Responding, Bayero Agabi told the minister that the organizing team was driven by the need to promote understanding, foster sub-regional integration and economic development using tourism, arts and culture as a tool. Bayero, a seasoned media strategist added that with Africa fast becoming an emerging global market across different spectrum, it was pertinent that westernization is not allowed to sweep away the people’s ethics, norms and ideas which are often expressed via language, fashion, food, music and religious belief around which the conference is centered.

In another separate visit to the Ghana Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, the Minister, Hon. Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Aggyare commended the collaborative efforts of Tribe Media Company, Nigeria and Pan African Ghana towards the promotion and sustenance of African values through culture and tourism with such a laudable bilateral forum such as the Ghana-Nigeria Tourism and Culture showcase.
