    Shuga enters fourth season

    THE fourth edition of critically acclaimed television series, Shuga, was premiered last Thursday at the Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Among those present at the premiere were returning cast members of the series; Chris Attoh, Dorcas Shola Fapson, Sharon Ezeamaka, Nick Mutuma and Emmanuel Ikubese. Other artistes who graced the premiere of Shuga included the likes of Kiss Daniel, Dakore Akande, as well as Adesua Etomi.

    At the premiere of the advocacy series, producers announced that for the first time, it will be subtitled in French and Portuguese in order to extend its reach.

    To spice things up with the new season, the trio of Ice Prince, Patoranking, and Reminisce, collaborated to create a theme song titled Catch Me.

    Shuga is a television soap opera that was first aired in November 2009 on MTV Base as part of an initiative dubbed “MTV Staying Alive Ignite”. Its first two seasons were commissioned by MTV Networks Africa in association with The MTV Staying Alive Foundation, The US President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (HFG) and the Government of Kenya, as part of a multimedia campaign to spread the message about responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance.

    In May 2010, Shuga bagged a gold award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg, Germany in the Public Relations Health category for its vivid and uncompromising focus on love, emotions and sexual behavior amongst the Kenyan youth.

    A new set of cast has been added to the new season: Adesua Etomi (Sheila), Peace Hyde (Eniola), Zoe Favour (Favour), Jemima Osunde (Leile), Tunbosun Mohua Mokoatle (Bongi), and others will be gracing the screen scheduled to air on 120 broadcasters across the world.

    Shuga shines at World Media Festival

    THE MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base (Africa) have won the prestigious Gold Award in Edutainment at the World Media Festival for Shuga, the sex and relationship drama series filmed in Lagos.

    This is the second time Shuga has won the award, after the success recorded for the series 1 in 2010, where it won gold in the Public Relations Health Award category.

    The World Media Festival Gold Award recognizes true excellence in modern media communication. Judged by industry experts, the 2014 awards saw 700 entries critiqued for writing, sound, editing, creativity and visuals, insights.

    Georgia Arnold, Executive Director, MTV Staying Alive Foundation, shared her excitement about the award: “We are honoured to receive the World Media Festival Gold award for Edutainment, recognising the value of Shuga as a vehicle for communicating messages about public health; as an entertainment experience and as a grassroots teaching tool.”

    Highlighting the valuable role that ‘edutainment’ and multimedia communications can play in the battle to reduce the number of HIV infections among Nigerian youth, Shuga is part of a far-reaching multimedia campaign that fuses sexual health messaging with gripping storylines to raise awareness among young people on HIV prevention and reproductive health in Nigeria.

    Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President/ Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa,  said: “Set in Nigeria, but following universal themes, Shuga showcases the creativity of Nigerian writers, directors and actors. We are delighted that these talented individuals had this mainstream opportunity to demonstrate their talents on TV and other content platforms around the world, using authentic Nigerian voices to paint a new picture of the continent on the global stage, while simultaneously fulfilling important public health goals.”

    The third series of Shuga, which was filmed in Lagos was written by Kemi Adesoye and directed by Biyi Bandele.

    It’s African Christmas Medley from Shuga Band

    MANAGING Director of Shuga Entertainment and the lead singer of Shuga Band, Akin Tofowomo, has said that all is set to release into the market a compilation of Christmas lyrics customised with the Shuga touch in an African way.

    Titled African Christmas Medley, Tofowomo explained that it is a combination of a fine blend of eight tracks, produced by Wole Oni and Akin Shuga as the Executive Producer. Among the tracks are Angels from the Realm of Glory, Joy to the World, Onye Nzoputa, Oba ni Jesu.

    Speaking on the album, Akin said; “What is behind African Christmas Medley is the nostalgia that comes with Christmas. It is nostalgic for me thinking about all the Christmases I have had. The medley is an African way of celebrating Christmas that has a global appeal with our contemporary music. The album is kick starting a new phase in Shuga Entertainment, and this is the beginning of a new era, as singles and full albums of the band will continue to be released. The 8 tracks are Christmas medley like you have never heard before.”

    SHUGA Entertainment is in a state of euphoria at the moment. The owners of popular band, Shuga Band, was voted the band of the year in the competitive category that featured bands like Shuga Band, Top Band, Ebony Band, Sharp Band, Faith Band and Estimable Band at the just concluded WED Expo.

    Speaking on the award, Akinloye Tofowomo, Shuga Band CEO, who chose to share the feat with his fans and team, said “On behalf of Shuga Entertainment Nigeria limited, owners of Shuga Band, we want to say a big thank you to the organisers, our fans and clients for their patronage over the years. Also to all band members, technical crew and admin staff through their relentless and collaborative effort to ensure every event is delivered with its unique touch and professionalism. To my family, I say a big thank you for your support,” he concluded.

    Shuga Band has always been a front liner when it comes to providing music and entertainment with the touch of class that separates it from other bands, and this has made the band the first band of choice among corporate Nigeria for corporate gigs, weddings and other social events.

    Shuga Band has performed at several high-octane events from the wedding of Bella Adenuga, the daughter of billionaire, Mike Adenuga Jnr. to Afromedia 50th anniversary and other A-list ceremonies across the country. The band was a regular caller at Aso Rock in the days of President Olusegun Obasanjo and it also played at the fundraising for Jonathan. Its resume of governors’ client keeps increasing by the day.
