Siasia happy Ighalo is back to scoring form

Super Eagles’ Chief Coach, Samson Siasia has praised the efforts of Watford and Eagles’ striker, Odion Ighalo who inspired his club to oust FA Cup holder Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the competition which they won 2-1 at the expense of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.

Ighalo scored the opening goal and was eventually awarded the Man of the Match of the game for his impressive contribution to Watford’s victory. Ighalo scored the opening goal in the 50th minute after which Ighalo’s teammate Guédioura increased tally in the 63rd minute and Arsenal’s striker Welbeck reduced tally in the 88th minute.

“Siasia, who had called to wish Ighalo well before the match was a happy man that one of his trusted players is back to scoring ways and did it in style ousting FA Cup holder from the competition.

Speaking with SportingLife after the match the elated Eagles gaffer expressed delight in the goal scored by Ighalo and was hopeful the striker would do same against the Pharaoh of Egypt in Kaduna on March 25.

“I am very happy that Odion (Ighalo) is back to his best and have started scoring again. I told you guys that this can happen to any player and that when the goals starts pouring in again it will continue. I like the goal Odion scored and I am hopeful that he can replicate this scoring form when he comes home for the Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifiers against Egypt in Kaduna and away in Alexandria”, Siasia disclosed.

BATTLE AGAINST THE PHARAOHS: Siasia opts for Euro Eagles

    • Shuts door against home-based flops

Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia has hinted he could consider lining up a team made up of only pros from overseas after he said he was disappointed his home-based team failed to beat a second-tier league side, Katsina United on Thursday.

Siasia is supervising a training camp of players from the domestic league with the hope of picking some of them to join a 21-man squad of foreign pros called up for the AFCON double header against Egypt later this month.

However, the outspoken coach said he was again far from impressed with the performance of the home-based team as well as the goalless draw with Katsina United.

He had previously expressed his displeasure with the performance of the team after they lost 2-0 to the country’s Olympic team on Wednesday.

“I am not really happy that they couldn’t create enough chances to beat a team like Katsina United. It is rather unfortunate,” said Siasia after the scoreless draw with Katsina United.

“By now I am supposed to have seen some wonderful displays from my boys. What worries me is their nonchalant attitude in front of goal. They find it difficult to create scoring chances and even the few ones created were fluffed.

“We can’t be missing goals like this in a crucial match against Egypt. I will have no option than to rely on the foreign-based players, if the home boys fail to live up to the billings.”

Siasia blasts Euro clubs over black coaches

Nigeria caretaker coach, Samson Siasia has said there are only a handful of black coaches working in Europe because the clubs there do not believe in them.

Siasia has been reappointed Nigeria coach in an interim capacity in the wake of the shock resignation of Sunday Oliseh recently.

He first coached Nigeria’s Super Eagles in 2010, before he was fired the following year after he failed to qualify the country to the 2012 AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Before getting his coaching badges in the United States of America and Europe, he played for French club, Nantes as well as Lokeren in Belgium. He also featured at the 1994 World Cup in the USA when Nigeria made a long-awaited debut.

Siasia has now said European clubs are guilty of not giving black coaches a chance.

“I want to believe that the reason that there are not many black coaches working in Europe is because the European clubs hardly give us a chance and they do not believe in us,” said the coach, who was severally linked with jobs abroad.

“Many of us have not only played at the highest level in Europe, but have excelled, but even when we get our coaching badges there, these clubs still don’t give us the break we need to show what we can do outside the pitch.

“We have many ex-African players with French nationality, but I can only recall (Claude) Makalele who was at Bastia and that was it. Where is John Barnes with all he achieved at Liverpool and even though he grew up in England and played for that country? He was not given much of a chance there as a coach.

“Where is another black coach, Chris Houghton? Where is he now? Many of us have good records as players and then coaches, but because the European clubs do not believe in us, we end up having to do something else. And even where they give us a chance, they are quick to dispense with us.

“Something is really not right, but I don’t want to put any name to it.”

Siasia wants Nigeria league midweek matches off

Coach Samson Siasia has said he wants Nigeria league midweek matches suspended for him to work fully with the home-based players from Monday.

Siasia has called up 22 players from the domestic league for a training camp in Abuja beginning on Monday ahead of AFCON qualifiers against Egypt later this month.

“I have spoken with the federation and I would want midweek league matches suspended, that will help with my preparation,” Siasia told reporters at a press briefing.

The selected players from this training camp will move to Kaduna on March 21 to be joined by the foreign pros.

Siasia also raised concerns over the sharply different weather conditions the country’s Europe-based stars will battle when they fly in the AFCON qualifiers.

“It’s cold in Europe and it will be hot in Kaduna, so I am very concerned about this,” he admitted.

  • Mikel: Siasia, you have my support

Mikel: Siasia, you have my support

Chelsea star,Mikel Obi has called up Nigeria caretaker coach, Samson Siasia to pledge his total support ahead of all-important AFCON qualifiers against Egypt later this month.

A top source close to Siasia informed AfricanFootball.com that Mikel has already called the coach to vow his total support in the wake of the resignation of Sunday Oliseh.

“Mikel called Siasia and pledged his full support,” disclosed the source.

The 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder was sensationally dropped to the bench by Oliseh when Nigeria beat Swaziland 2-0 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier last year.

As Eagles vice-captain, he was widely expected to be named Eagles coach by Oliseh after Vincent Enyeama’s dramatic exit from the Super Eagles, but in the end Ahmed Musa was handed the captain’s armband.

Mikel’s relationship with Siasia has blown hot and cold. He was one of the stars when Siasia led the country to reach the final of the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands.

However, the coach overlooked him for the 2008 Beijing Olympics after he stayed away from the qualifying tournament for the summer games.

  • Siasia calls Balogun

    • Says only fit players to battle Egypt

Coach Samson Siasia has extended invitation to FSV Mainz 05 of Germany defender, Leon Balogun ahead of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations double –take qualifiers against the Pharaohs of Egypt. The latest invitation brings to 21 the number of overseas –based players called for the games.

Also on Friday, Siasia declared that only those who show guts and grit, and ability to adapt to conditions, would be fielded against the Pharaohs.

The Super Eagles’ new boss stated that there would be no sentiments or consideration of previous ability as only the training sessions in Kaduna and Alexandria would be used to decide the 18 players on the roll for each game.

“These are two matches that we have to win. There would be no looking at what someone had done in the past, or current form at club level. If you are doing well at your club at the moment and you can’t show ferocious form in training and ability to adapt to the environment, then you would have no place.

“I am excited at the debate that has been generated by the team list. You can never satisfy everyone. The important thing is that we know the players we want for these big games and we have invited them, and we believe in them to deliver.”

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations gold medallist assured that he has been speaking with all the players on the list and has received assurance that everyone is ready to give his all in both games.

“We continue to ask for the support of every Nigerian as we count down to the two matches. Our people should believe that we can do it, and we will do it.”

Nigeria host Egypt in Kaduna on  March 25 and visit the Pharaohs in Alexandria on the 29th in two crucial 2017 Cup of Nations qualifiers. Egypt top  Group G  with six points, two more than the Eagles who are in second place.

NIGERIA VS EGYPT: Siasia shuts door on Enyeama, Emenike

Nigeria’s interim coach, Samson Siasia has given up his bid to lure goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike back from international retirement.

Both players quit the Super Eagles last October after falling out with former coach Sunday Oliseh.

When Oliseh resigned on Friday, Siasia asked the duo to reconsider but they have rejected the idea of a return.

“You can’t force them to rescind their decision and we have to respect that,” Siasia told BBC Sport.

“I felt they left under a cloudy circumstance. It was only an opportunity for them to reconsider their stance but it appears they’ve both decided to stick by their retirement.

“Nigeria is blessed with talented footballers and we need to work with those players. We have to live away from the past and focus on a promising future.”

Enyeama retired from international football in October last year when the captaincy was taken away from him by Oliseh.

“I don’t want to talk about this issue again. I think my earlier decision [to retire] stands,” Enyeama told Lagos-based radio station Brila FM.

Striker Emenike followed Enyeama’s lead and quit the Super Eagles a few days later.

Siasia and his assistants Salisu Yusuf and Emmanuel Amunike are expected to finalise and name the country’s squad for the game against the seven-time African champions this week.

Siasia refuses to confirm whether China-based Obafemi Martins, and premier league duo of  Victor Moses and John Mikel Obi still have a Super Eagles future.

“We can’t rule out anyone at the moment. The games against Egypt are crucial  and we are keeping our focus. We need the support of everyone to succeed.

“This is a big task for us and we want to give our best like those players who are prepared to give 120 per cent on the field for their country.”
