SIFAX Group defends supporters club’s sponsorship to AFCON 2023

SIFAX Group, one of the major sponsors of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club (NFSC) to the recently-concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’ Ivoire, has said the desire to see the country lift the continental trophy for the fourth time and forging unity across the country was the driving force behind its support for the supporters’ club.

According to the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Olumuyiwa Akande, SIFAX has always been a great supporter of Nigerian football and has established a great relationship with NFSC over the years, resulting in sponsorship to some major football tournaments.

According to him: “As an indigenous conglomerate, our passion and loyalty lie in Nigeria succeeding in all endeavours. Football is a unifying factor for us as Nigerians, and SIFAX Group takes the issue of national unity and development seriously.

“All fault lines across religion, ethnicity, and politics disappear anytime the national football teams play. SIFAX Group wants to further engender that spirit of unity and togetherness through football. Clinching the trophy for the fourth time was also a great attraction.

“The company found the platform of the supporters’ club as a veritable one to achieve these objectives. The impact of the supporters’ club on the success of our national teams cannot be overemphasized. Through thick and thin, the club is available at major tournaments and games to encourage the players and promote the interest of the nation. These patriotic and selfless Nigerians deserve to be supported.”

President General, NFSC, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo said, the club would have been stranded and unable to support the team during the tournament if corporate organisations like SIFAX Group didn’t support them.

“I am grateful to Dr. Taiwo Afolabi and the SIFAX Group for their timely and consistent support for our activities. The travel costs for our members are very huge considering the one-month duration of the tournament.

” We pay for transport, feeding, and accommodation for all our members. I am grateful for this sponsorship, alongside other companies and individuals,” he said.

SIFAX Group in talks with Fed Govt, Lagos on aviation

SIFAX Group and its aviation partner, Changi Airports International from Singapore have opened discussions on strategic collaboration with the Federal Government and Lagos State government to develop the country’s aviation sector.

The group disclosed this in a statement signed by its head of Corporate Communication, Mr Muyiwa Akande.

SIFAX Group, through one of its subsidiaries, SAHCO Plc, Akande said is already a major player in the aviation ground handling space.

However, the consortium, Akande said, is looking to explore more business prospects in the sector such as aviation terminal management, airline management and development and other ancillary services.

In various meetings recently with the Vice President, Kasim Shettima, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, the Group reiterated its commitment to the development of Nigeria’s aviation sector, explaining that the company has the capacity to contribute substantially to the growth of the sector, which will positively impact the nation in terms of job creation, tourism development and economic growth.

Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of the Consortium noted that SIFAX Group has a track record of turning around enterprises for profitability in Nigeria and beyond. Citing the example of SAHCO Plc which was carved out of the defunct Nigeria Airways and was concessioned to the Group in 2009, Afolabi noted that SIFAX Group has invested heavily in growing it to become the number one cargo handling company in West Africa, as well as being listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange.

He said: “SAHCO is a very good example of the Group’s capacity and expertise in turning around enterprises for growth and profitability. Our port terminal, at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos is also another example we can reference to solidify our claims. It was in a bad shape when we won the concessioning in 2006 but years down the line, we are proud of the innovations we have introduced that have transformed the terminal to the leading indigenous terminal in the Lagos port.

“We are also turning around the fortunes of Warri Terminal B, in Warri Delta State which was abandoned for years. All of these experiences and expertise alongside our technical partnership with Changi Airports International can be put at the disposal of the Federal Government and Lagos State government in their quests to float their respective airlines and the development and management of airport terminals across the country.”

Roy Toh, Director, International Projects, Changi Airports International, said its partnership with SIFAX Group would enable the consortium to replicate what Changi Airports had done across the globe.

He said: “The Singapore Airport is a global reference of how aviation terminal management can be done successfully we hope to replicate our success here in Nigeria. This is why we have partnered with a company with a credible track record, SIFAX Group and we are open to collaboration with the government”.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu lauded SIFAX Group for its various investments in the state that has contributed greatly to its economic growth, assuring that the the state is open to partner with the company.
