Silva scores late winner as city reach FA Cup final

Manchester City bounced back from the disappointment of the Champions League quarter-final exit to Real Madrid as Bernardo Silva’s late goal sunk Chelsea at Wembley to seal a place in the FA Cup final.

It was redemption for Silva after his poor spot-kick played a key role in City’s loss on penalties to Real.

The Portuguese midfielder turned in the winner at the far post from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross six minutes from time.

Chelsea will regret missing a host of chances, nearly all falling to striker Nicolas Jackson, as they suffered another agonising Wembley experience after the extra-time defeat on penalties against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

And Chelsea also feel they were victims of an injustice as they were infuriated that they were not awarded a second-half penalty when Cole Palmer’s free-kick struck Jack Grealish’s hand in the wall, only for the video assistant referee to rule no offence had taken place.

Fulham’s Silva relishes London derby against Chelsea

Marco Silva has talked up Fulham’s rivals Chelsea ahead of Monday night’s Premier League west London derby.

Chelsea have taken just five points from their opening six Premier League games and head to Craven Cottage, where they lost 2-0 in January, for a west London derby on Monday.

Silva touched on his relationship with the under-fire Pochettino and the Argentinean’s pedigree as a manager.

“Of course I respect him like I do all the managers but I have a very good relationship with Mauricio,” Silva said.”I don’t know how many times we’ve played each other in the Premier League but he’s a very good manager.

“Look at what he did at Southampton, then Tottenham and then the spell in France (with Paris St Germain) – with the CV he has he’s come back to England to manage Chelsea, which is a tough job much like many jobs in the Premier League.

“I have huge respect for him, he’s a very good manager and a very good guy and it will be nice to see him again.”

Chelsea fell to a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last week where Malo Gusto and Nicolas Jackson picked up suspensions for Monday’s game.

Silva refused to take confidence from Chelsea’s recent league form – they have not scored in their last three, taking only one point – and highlighted the quality in their squad after a £1 billion-plus revamp since last year.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” he added. “Chelsea is Chelsea and no-one can underestimate them because the quality is there.

“Of course they haven’t started the way they would have liked to and since Mauricio come in they are trying to get them in a position to fight for titles.

“Against Chelsea it doesn’t matter what they did in the last few games, after the defeat to Villa they reacted and they won against Brighton in the Carabao Cup which is a goal for them (to win).

“Since January they have signed a big number of players who are very good and these things take time.

“Mauricio, the staff and the players will want to keep improving and to react and if we underestimate them it will be the first big mistake.”

Silva highlighted the importance of the derby to Fulham fans.

He said: “We play at home and it’s a derby, a special one for our fans and we want to play for the shirt and make them proud.

“The game is important for our fans; we want to be competitive, fight for the three points and to make their life (Chelsea) difficult as well.”

  • Silva: Everton were too nervous

Marco Silva says Everton were “too nervous” as they lost 1-0 to Leicester on New Year Day, but added there was no reason for it.

Everton’s bad run of form continued as Jamie Vardy’s 58th-minute strike handed Leicester the victory, with the Toffees having now won just one of their last eight league fixtures.

Silva was critical of his side, calling it a “poor performance” and adding they were too nervous, although could not give an excuse as to why.

He told Sky Sports: “It was a disappointing result and a poor performance to be honest. We always have to be honest and we have to look clearly at the game and analyse the match calmly and to pass the feedback back to our boys.

“It was poor from the first minute and we knew before the match what they came here to do. It is easy to understand like they started the game they were playing 4-5-1, blocking the space and waiting for our mistakes. In the first half, we were in control and every time we had the ball and wanted to start something, we were too nervous without reason.

“Of course, when you’re playing that way, it is easy to lose easy passes and easy combinations and every time we win the ball and start to organise our attack, we lose. We tried, we lose and then the game gets a little bit confused. When you are so anxious in the game, after comes the easy mistakes like we made.

“For the goal, we conceded a counter-attack with Jamie Vardy with a normal ball that is normal to control because we didn’t handle the normal pressure in a normal football game this afternoon. We will find the reasons for that but it was a poor performance from our squad today.

“If you look at our last few results, they haven’t been consistent but there is no reason to be so anxious and so nervous.

  • Silva: Poor decision cost us

Everton boss Marco Silva says that a poor decision to allow Arsenal’s second goal to stand changed the game against the Blues today.

Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners at The Emirates despite a positive showing from Everton and an encouraging performance up until the two goals.

The second was shown to be clearly offside, but officials on the pitch allowed the goal to stand, which will likely spark even more debate about whether or not VAR should be used in the Premier League – although obviously not as much debate as if it had happened to one of the Media Top Six Sides.

After the match, Silva said “The result didn’t reflect the match. During the match, we had four or five chances to score.

“Our team came to play and press high, but their goalkeeper is the best player on the pitch, and I think it reflects our performance.

“The result is disappointing for us. They had one chance and scored, and we created a lot of chances but didn’t score.

“It is a clear offside for their second goal and it is a decision at an important stage because, at 1-0, we would have kept creating problems for them. I understand the job is difficult.”

According to him, clearing and sand-filling would be done as soon as the project is awarded to a competent contractor.

Speaking on the State Maritime Academy sited in Okpoma by the present administration, Dickson expressed concern that the institution had yet to function as expected because of financial constraints.
