Keystone Bank Limited and Silverbird Group have hosted children at the Silverbird Galleria in Lagos State and in Abuja.

The event, which took place on Children’s Day, was part of a series of activities Keystone Bank was involved to uplift children, while highlighting their roles as the future of the society.

The bank had partnered Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) to host about 500 primary school pupils.

The Acting Managing Director of Keystone Bank, Hafiz Bakare, said: “The saying that children are the leaders of tomorrow may have become cliché for many, however the saying has never been more pertinent for us, especially as we look to a better future for Nigeria.

‘’This is why in addition to the several financial literacy programmes which we run in primary and secondary schools across Nigeria, we also have the Keystone Bank Future Account which is meant to give children an early start towards saving and financial discipline”.

Bakare also explained that one of the reasons for partnering with the Silverbird group for this event was the fact that beyond work and learning, children also need to express themselves through recreation and fun activities.

“To balance our activities in giving children learning opportunities in financial education, we also realise that children need to have fun for a more balanced outlook,” he said.

Keystone Bank’s Future Account comprises the Kids Account for children from zero to 10 years and the Teens Account for adolescents from 11 to 17 Accounts are operated by their parents or guardians on behalf of the children and can be taken over by the children once they become adults.

Addressing guests shortly before the screening of the movie, Afolayan noted that ‘Omugwo’ is an Africa Magic-commissioned film in partnership with his company, Golden Effects Productions. “We were commissioned to do three films,” he said, “and this is one of them. After this, we are going to unveil ‘Roti’ and ‘Tribunal’.”

He said he is particularly excited about the film “because it’s meant to be a small-budget television drama, but by the time you see it, you may want to ask what differentiates a low budget film from a high budget film, because this is just like any of Kunle Afolayan’s productions.”

According to the filmmaker, the film is a slight departure from his usual style of story-telling, going by its comic nature. “It’s a comedy. Because people perceive most of my works as being serious, so I had this watered down. This film is releasing this Friday and this is the first public screening.”

Written by Kemi Adesoye, ‘Omugwo’ tells the story of Omotunde, a young civil engineer, married to Raymond, an OAP who have just had a baby. Coloured by their different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law forcefully move in with the couple to perform the Igbo childcare rite called Omugwo. But instead of relieving their children of the burden of childcare, the mothers’ rivalry complicates life for the young couple to comical effects.

In this highly inspiring film, Afolayan marries a serious subject matter of motherhood with lots of hilarious moments. An ‘edutainment’ movie, ‘Omugwo’ portrays two characteristics of motherhood and gives kudos to the African tradition, while on the other hand, it attempts to prefer solution to some of the challenges  faced by young couples especially after the arrival of their first child. Ozorkwo and Adesanya leave viewers with catchy phrases that follow the viewers home and help the story to linger on.

Afolayan used the opportunity of the premiere to introduce his new client, Tecno Mobile, a company he said he will be doing a lot more with, going forward.

This is adding to his list of such companies as Air France, Adron Homes, and Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), among others that he represents as brand ambassador.

The governors received the awards at the ‘Silverbird Man of the Year Awards and Honours 2013’, held at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that aside the governors, six other persons, including Presidents of two African countries, also bagged different awards at the event.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone were given “Awards of Distinction”.

The Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Joseph Habienza, received the award on behalf of Kagame, while Sierra-Leonean High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Henry Macaulay, received on behalf of Koroma.

Also, Dr Tunji Braithwaite, a popular lawyer and human rights activist; Dr Chinweizu, a mathematician and author, and Chief Joop Berkhout (OON), a publisher, received the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi (MON) also received the Special Achievement Award.

Speaking on his award, Fashola noted that of all the recipients, it was only Chinweizu that could not come on stage to receive his award because of his disability.

He called on all builders, developers and civil engineers in the state to make sure that they took disabled persons into consideration while building, so that they (disabled) could move around without hindrance.

“Every house built in Lagos since 2008 has complied with this directive because we must always take the disabled among us into consideration in all things,’’ he said.

Fashola appealed to people to obey the directive voluntarily.

The governor dedicated his award to public servants and tax payers in Lagos State.

On his own speech, Obi thanked Silverbird for giving him a genuine award, which he did not have to pay for.

He advised other state governments to return the public schools to churches which would run them better, like he did in Anambra.

“The government has no business running the schools; they should only make the policies and support the schools with money,’’ he said.

He said it had been difficult and challenging running Anambra and called on the people to pray for the success of the incoming governor, Chief Willie Obiano.

Welcoming guests earlier, the Chairman of Silverbird Group, Mr Ben Murray-Bruce, called on political office holders to be humble and accountable to the people they govern.

Murray-Bruce also advised them to keep records of their service to the people.

“The people deserve to know how you served them during your tenure; the people must read what you documented while in office, we cannot grow if we distort history,’’ he said.

He extolled the qualities of Fashola and Obi, and urged Nigerians to emulate them.

NAN reports that the event was chaired by a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Odein Ajumogobia.

Prof Madubuike, from Abia State, who doubled as the chairman of the event, urged Ndigbo to build a Hall of Fame for those who have distinguished themselves in the zone.

He noted that it is good for such people to be honoured while they are still alive than to give them posthumous awards.

The academic criticised wealthy indigenes in the area for not investing in print and electronic media as like their counterparts in the Southwest.

He described the award recipients as worthy ambassadors of Igbo land.
