  • Undergraduate faces armed robbery charge, remanded in prison

    A 24-year-old student, Chijioke Samson, who allegedly broke into a house and robbed a woman, Mrs. Modupe Adebayo of her wedding ring and laptops at gunpoint with others still at large, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Samson, who resides in Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge bordering on unlawful possession of firearms and stealing.

    Although the accused denied the charge, the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on April 3 at about 9.30 p.m. at No. 21, Ore-ofe St., off Governor’s Road, Ikotun.

    He said the accused broke into the complainant’s house and robbed her of her wedding ring, two laptops, a phone, all valued at N575, 000 and N108, 000 cash.

    “The accused was apprehended by the police in his escape bid while accomplices fled in an unmarked car.’’

    According to Imhonwa, police recovered one locally-made gun with two live cartridges from the accused.

    The offences contravened Sections 295, 296 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison and directed that the case file should be sent to the State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Osunsanmi adjourned the case until July 24 for mention.

    Lagos marketer arraigned for N1.6m property theft

    A 39-year-old marketer, Nicholas Uzomba, was on Monday charged with stealing a company’s products worth N1.6 million at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Uzomba, who lives in Surulere area of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of false pretences, fraud and stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    But the Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in August 2016 at No. 24, Odetola St., Surulere.

    He alleged that the accused obtained property worth N1.6 million from Aurum Group of Companies owned by the complainant, Mrs Maurice Etim, on the pretext of promoting the products.

    Imhonwa also said that the accused also collected an EcoBank cheque for N300,000 from the complainant for logistics in promoting the products using his company — Buzz Technic Consult Ltd.

    “Uzomba sold  the products and converted the money to personal use and absconded; efforts to reach him on phone were unsuccessful.

    “He was, however, apprehended by the police.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 312 provides seven years for false pretences.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 and two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until June 26 for mention.

  • Woman arraigned for biting off friend’s ear, granted bail

    A 22-year-old unemployed woman, Tope Olanrewaju, who allegedly assaulted her friend by biting off her left ear, was on Friday granted N100, 000 bails by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety in like sum, who must be gainfully employed.

    The accused, a resident of No. 4, Agbowa St., Ogijo near Ikorodu, Lagos State, had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault occasioning grievous harm and unlawfully inflicting wounds brought against her.

    According to Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa, the accused committed the offences on May 7 at about 4.00.p.m. at Toyin Street, Ikeja.

    Imhonwa alleged that the accused beat the complainant, Tolulope Adekoya, to a pulp and cut off her left ear with her teeth.

    “The complainant said Tope Olanrewaju had threatened to deal with her on several occasions.

    “The complainant alleged that the accused refused to return the money she borrowed and kept threatening her life whenever she demands her money.

    “This led to a misunderstanding and a fight between them, and in the process, the accused beat Adekoya to a pulp and bit off the left ear,” he told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 171 and 244 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The magistrate adjourned the case until July 1 for mention.

     

  • Three teenagers arraigned over robbery

    Three teenagers were on Friday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing one Mr Isaiah Okeimen of his possessions in his house.

    The accused: Rasak Lawal, 20; Ahmed Akogun, 19, and Friday Johnson, 18, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

    The accused, residents of Ojo area, a Lagos suburb, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offence with others still at large, at about 1.30 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2016 at Unity Crescent, Igbede town, Ojo area of Lagos.

    Imhonwa alleged that the trio stole 2, 650 US dollars, 7  iPhones, one laptop, a wrist watch, all valued at N3. 2 million, property of the complainant, Okeimen.

    According to him, the accused were apprehended by security guards in the early hours of the day and in their possession were knife, cutlasses and planks.

    “The complainant had raised alarm that robbers had invaded his house which alerted the security guards.

    “The accused persons were eventually arrested while the other accomplices escaped,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 295 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The section provides up to 21 years imprisonment if convicted.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.

    Osunsanmi said the sureties must be a blood relation and a community leader and should provide evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case till July 11, for mention.

     

  • Man remanded for robbery, possession of firearms

    An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State on Wednesday remanded Chimezie Joseph, 21, for allegedly being in possession of a double-barrel revolver pistol with 12 live cartridges.

    The accused, an unemployed who lives at Ilasamaja near Mushin area of Lagos State, is standing trial on a three- count charge bordering on unlawful possession of fire arms and attempted robbery.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison pending the receipt of legal advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

    “In view of the nature of the case, the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the DPPs for advice,” Osunsanmi said.

    The magistrate, thereafter, adjourned the matter until May 18, for mention.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others at large on Nov. 16, 2016 at about 3.00 a.m., at Ilasamaja during a stop-and-search.

    Imhonwa said the accused was apprehended by the police while attempting to rob one Sebastina Agosu in her house while his accomplices fled in an unmarked car.

    The prosecutor said that the police recovered one locally-made-double barrel pistol, one locally-made-single-barrel revolver pistol, one locally-made-barrette pistol and 12 live cartridges from him.

    The prosecutor said that the accused could not produce any licences issued to him from any appropriate authority.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 295, 296 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 as revised.

    The accused had earlier been arraigned for alleged conspiracy and armed robbery, sometime, in 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

     

  • Company driver docked for theft of pharmaceutical products

    A driver, Dauda Oladipupo, who is charged with stealing N2 million worth of pharmaceutical products, on Wednesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Oladipupo, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, the accused committed the offences between September 20012 and August 2013 at Olpharm Nigeria Ltd located at No. 13, Agbaoku St., Opebi, Ikeja.

    Imhonwa alleged that the accused stole the pharmaceutical products worth N2 million and absconded.

    The accused, he said, was asked to deliver the goods to different customers, but sold the goods and converted the money to personal use.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 285 states three years in jail for stealing, while Section 409 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted N300, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, said the sureties should be a reputable company staff with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.‎

    She adjourned the case until July 3 for trial.

     

  • Unemployed man remanded in prison over armed robbery

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded an umployed man, Wahidi Ajala, in Kirikiri Prisons after he pleaded guilty to armed robbery.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, said the accused should remain behind bars, pending sentencing.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, had told court that the accused committed the offences at about 6.00 a.m. on Jan. 16 at Iloro in Dopemu, near Lagos.

    He said that the accused conspired with others still at large and robbed one Emmanuel Alonge of two phones, valued at N117, 000 at gunpoint.

    Imhonwa said the accused, who was armed with a locally made double barrel gun, robbed Emmanuel of his two mobile phones valued N117,000 and a bag containing his personal effects.

    He alleged that the complainant, who was on his way to work, was attacked by the accused, who pointed a gun at him.

    “The complainant was accosted by the accused, who came with a gun and snatched his phones valued at N117, 000.

    “He was later apprehended by the police.”

    Imhonwa said the accused was apprehended by passersby who noticed what was going on.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 295 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused may be sentenced to 21 years imprisonment if convicted, according to Section 295 of the Criminal Law.

    The case was adjourned until May 14 for sentencing.

     

  • Businessman in court over N4.4m fuel fraud

    A 47-year-old businessman, Abdulfatai Adewale, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N4.4 million petrol fraud.

    The accused, who lives at Olodi Apapa, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, had told the court that the accused obtained N4.4 million from Mr Adeyinka Imam on the pretext of supplying him 33, 000 litres of petrol.

    He said that the fraud occurred in January 2016 in Olodi Apapa.

    “The accused collected the money and promised to supply the goods to the complainant but never did. Rather, he converted the N4.4 million for his own use,’’ he said.

    Imhonwa said that the accused also issued a dud Zenith Bank cheque with number 26430724 to the tune of N4.4million in favour of the complainant.

    “The cheque was dishonoured on presentation due to insufficient funds in the account,” he said.

    Imhonwa said that the accused absconded after committing the fraud but was later apprehended by the police.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 285, 312 and 319 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Chief Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi granted the accused bail in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case has been adjourned until June 17 for mention.
