  • Two men charged with theft of N570, 000 building materials

    Two unemployed men, who allegedly stole building materials valued at N570,000, were on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused — Saheed Muyideen, 38, Afeez Kareem, 28, — reside at Ojota area of Lagos and are being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inuoha, the accused committed the offences on March 16 at Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb.

    Inuoha said the accused stole 15 iron doors, a welding machine and a grinding machine, property of the complainant, Mr Ademola David, valued at N570,000.

    The accused were, however, caught at the point of selling the stolen items, he told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides three years imprisonment  for stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, entered a `not guilty’ plea.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, in her ruling, granted the accused a bail of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until April 4 for mention.

  • Businessman docked for N4.5m fraud

    A 30-year-old man, Stanley Chukwuemeka, who allegedly defrauded a woman of N4.5 million, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, a businessman, who resides at Oshodi, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inuoha, told the court that the offences were committed between 2014 and May 2016 at Oshodi, Lagos.

    Inuoha said that the accused collected N4.5 million from the complainant, one Mrs Emen, on the pretext of getting her a United Kingdom visa.

    “Thereafter, the accused disappeared and all efforts to find him failed,” he said.

    Inuoha said that the accused was, however, apprehended after being sighted by the complainant at Ikeja.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 285 and 312(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, however, entered a not-guilty plea.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi adjourned the case until April 27, for mention.

  • Man charged with unlawful possession of pistol

    Chionye Dickson, a 35-year-old unemployed man, who allegedly had in his possession a locally made pistol, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides in Layeni area of Ikorodu in Lagos State, is facing a charge of unlawful possession of arms.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inuoha told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 28 at Layeni Junction, Ikorodu.

    Inuoha said the accused was stopped by some policemen on patrol and when he was searched, a pistol and two cartridges were found on him.

    “When he was asked how he came about the pistol or what he intended to do with it, he could not give a satisfactory explanation.”

    The offence contravened Section 310 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, according to the prosecutor.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, adjourned the case until April 13 for mention.

     

  • Woman docked for stealing employer’s N1.7m

    A 37-year-old woman, Blessing Elochukwu, was on Thursday charged with stealing her employer’s N1.7 million  at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, a cashier, who resides at Agbara, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inuoha, told the court that the offence was committed between May and June 2016 at Agbara.

    “The accused, a cashier in a company, was unable to account for N 1.7million during the audit of the company’s account.

    “It was discovered that the money was not remitted to the company’s account.

    “When the accused was asked about it, she could not give a reasonable account of how the money got missing,” he said.

    Inuoha said that the money belonged to one Mrs Justina Ugbaja.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused N300, 000-bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsanmi adjourned the case until March 27 for mention.

     

  • Man arraigned for pushing wife from storey building

    A 33-year-old man, Kema Akejelu, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for beating up his wife and pushing her from a storey building.

    The accused, a carpenter, who resides at Seun Nwachi Street, Idimu, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inuoha, told the court that the offence was committed on November 13 at the accused’s residence during a fight between the accused and his wife, Oghenekvewe.

    The man accused his wife of coming back home late.

    “The accused beat up his wife and pushed her from a storey building which caused her two ankles to dislocate,” the police prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Sections 170 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B. O Osunsanmi, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    She adjourned the case to February 15, 2017 for mention.
