  • Sisi Oge re-brands in Lagos

After 11 years of empowering over thousands of models and 11 queens, Nigeria beauty pageant, Sisi Oge, is rebranding and would now be called ‘Culturati’.

Speaking about the new initiative, Aregbe Idris, the brain behind the project, CEO, No. 1 Heritage Solutions  said: “It is great to know that people are familiar with the name Sis Oge which is an annual cultural event but after celebrating the 11th edition which was a resounding success, we decided to rebrand  for the 12th edition hence we now have Culturati. It is not just an annual event but is designed to sustain our culture and of course, we are also incorporating SMEs and expanding our scope. The objective is to see how we can also empower Nigerians. We are looking at culture from the prism of business and trying to tell the world that Culturati is not just about beauty pageants, not just about events but promoting our culture with a perspective to also explore the business angle of culture.”

He said “The notion behind Culturati 2019 is to explore nature’s creative beauty, create a renaissance of our cultural heritage, raise cultural ambassadors, and grow SMEs in the creative industry.

The cross-cultural event he said was rebranded to accommodate the existing cultural diversity of the Nigerian culture and to create a renaissance of our fading cultural heritage to the influx of western domination

“To that extent, build-up programmes are ongoing to create the right momentum for the major event. Some of the ongoing programmes are training sessions, workshop programmes, cultural exhibitions, and creative seminars.”

Idris disclosed that unlike Sisi Oge, Culturati will be a three-day-event which commences June 28 and runs through June 30th. It will hold at the Nike Art Gallery, Lekki, Lagos and Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

On the unique selling point of Culturati, Aregbe explains; “This lies in the robust ideas and core values of Heritage Solutions, with a committed and highly experienced team, in alignment with the active involvement of experienced and well-to-do stakeholders across Africa.”

“There is absolutely no doubt that culture is imponderable, as it remains invariably sacrosanct in recreating and re-experiencing the life and times of our forebears, hence sustaining these cultural legacies are the bedrock of Culturati’s existence,” he further narrated. Culturati is well on course in establishing itself as a global umbrella brand for celebrating values and uniting Africa.

Culturati according to him stands for  C- Celebrating Culture; U- Uniting People; L: Living Legacies; T- Transforming Arts Through Innovation; U; Utilising our Rich Arts; R- Raising Cultural Ambassadors; A- Appreciating Cultural Icons; T- Training Cultural Enthusiasts; I- Integrating Diverse Cultures

When he looks back 12 years, did he believe it was going to be this massive? “It is not easy to do 11 straight events unless you are focused especially when you are not doing it for the money or fame but out of a desire to serve and empower. It is all about passion. The objective is to make sure this outlives me.”

He also said the event would feature a cultural festival and a gala night. Aregbe explained, “We have a highly a committed and experienced team. There is absolutely no doubt that culture is imponderable; so, sustaining these cultural legacies are the bedrock of Culturati’s existence,” Aregbe concluded.

  • ‘Empowering youths is something I am passionate about’

Idris Aregbe is the Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Solutions. He has been the coordinator of Sisi Oge, a beauty pageant outfit, in the last 13 years. He speaks with Omolara Akintoye about his passion for hard work and little beginnings, among others. Excerpts:

You are a man of many parts; where do you draw your inspiration from?

I  have never believed in impossibilities. My inspirations are drawn from my desire to create something of value out of little. My passion for hard work and little beginnings have always inspired me to take on challenging ventures. And even when I go wrong in my decisions, I pick myself up and get back to the race; at times you want to quit but it’s not just an option when you have a determined mind with trust in God.

‘The need to give back to the society is also one of my fond inspirations. Growing up, I have always wanted to offer help in any capacity that I can, no matter how small it may seem. So, with these, I am constantly reminded that I have a lot to do, to make the world a better place.

    How would you describe yourself?

Sincerely, I only see myself as one young guy with so much favour from the Almighty. I always try my best to bring people together,  regardless of their social standing.

I am a simple man and those who know me intimately can testify to this.

    What takes your time?

I spend time working on my businesses. So, I take time to reflect, examine and seek out better ways to achieve more results. I also find time to spot problems. You might wonder what problems I’m referring to. Well, as a businessman I try to look out for problems that require solutions. Solutions that can create monetary value because, there must be an offering satisfying a problem for you to have a successful business.

On several occasions I have seen businesses grumble, not for the lack of cognate administrative directions, but many of them have failed to identify a problem and create an offering of satisfaction. So, I do a lot of that in order to stay relevant in business and chart new commercial paths.

As a youth doing something great, how do you hope to influence other youths?

Well, I have consistently been in the act of lending help to several youths. And without mincing words, there are many initiatives that I have spearheaded in order to reach out and influence a good number of Nigerian youths.

Empowering the youths is something I am passionate about and it gives me joy to see that God has helped me support a good number of them.

Through our platforms, I have empowered many young aspiring models and given them a platform to showcase their talents to the world. I have also identified, celebrated and empowered young artistic talents, financially and mentally.

Likewise, I have identified a good number of youths through Connecting Lagos Initiative, where we try to integrate ideas, enlighten and empower the youths through workshop schemes. The platform has positively touched the lives of youths.

Meanwhile, there are series of programmes outlined for the year and they are all crafted to influence the youths positively.

You have co-ordinated ‘Sisi Oge’ for 13 years; has it achieved its purpose?

Of course, it has. Sincerely, without mincing words, Sisi Oge has been a big  success. Through Sisi Oge, we have changed the fortunes of many young models; put smiles on the faces of many and given hope to those whose dreams were once shredded by unforeseen circumstances.

Sisi Oge has not only changed the lives of many, it has also put Lagos State on the global stage because it has been consistent in celebrating Lagos invaluable culture and tradition.

My Heritage, My Pride and Sisi Oge have been in the act of propagating, preserving the African culture and promoting peaceful culture co-existence with other foreign nations. It also celebrates Africa’s diverse cultures through programmes which include Fashion Show/Exhibition, Arts, Beauty Pageantry, Dance Drama, Music, Cultural Festivals, Skill Empowerment and Awards.

We have collaborated with both international and local organizations who share our beliefs, missions and goals.

What kind of person are you?

I am just me. I reiterate that I am a simple and unassuming man with love and respect for people,  irrespective of their social standing and financial status.

How do you push through rough times?

Rough times are inevitable in life and life itself is a challenging experience that demands patience, perseverance and commitment to weather through the storm. For me, these are the guiding principles that have kept me going through the corridors of intimidating challenges. I so much believe that with God, all things are possible.

You seem to be practising what you studied.

I studied politics and I am actively involved in politics. Probably because I chose to be a politician with business acumen so people tend to forget that I actually studied politics in school, so they see me more as a business man who studied Business Administration. Politics should not be left for the feeble mind who have no business undertaking because politics requires managing people and business skills which are the basic traits of politics and governance.

    Fond memories while growing up.

For me, I had quite a number of fond memories growing up, but most importantly, I love business from early childhood and anytime I was involved in one fun or the other, I was busy looking at a business gain from that gathering.

    Do you believe in mentoring?

Of course, I do. Quite a number of people gave me that and I have been actively involved in this and I am 100 per cent willing to do more mentoring.

What accomplishments would you consider most significant in your life?

There are many aspirations to be achieved. So for now, I am only inching closer to that significant accomplishment. And like I said earlier at the beginning of this interview, I have only scratched the surface of my ideas; and until I have put them to better use, I have not achieved anything. Don’t get me wrong; I am grateful to God for where I am today. But I am not a man that rests on his laurels. I set standards for myself and map out strategies on how to accomplish them.

Above all, the Almighty makes me happy and I reciprocate that with a number of people and that alone gives me joy.

  • How Sisi-Oge promotes African cultures

In the past 10 years, Idris Aregbe, popularly known as Sisi-Oge, has been in the forefront of the promotion of African cultural values. He relates the secret behind this in this interviewa with Omolara Akintoye

What is Sisi Oge, the Pride of Africa all about?

Thanks to the Almighty. This is a concept that started some years back, 10 years to be precise. We are ready to host the 10 anniversary, a lot of people have dreams and trying to live that dream is a problem for many because we have somehow lost our values. It has been 10 years of promoting African values and 10 years of celebrating our cultural heritage, as well as exchanging cultures all over the world knowing more about our values and roles its something that we are happy about we believe in and we are glad to be doing it and it has come to stay. The pageant is predicated upon the promotion of Africa’s heritage and values to the outside world. The event is aimed at the public and in particular the youths, with an objective of reconnecting them with their roots and origin using arts and culture as tools for National development.

What is the area of focus?

This year’s Sisi Oge will showcase a lot of art exhibition, beautiful and colourful events, dance drama with 22 contestants on stage showcasing their talents, presently the contestants are on camp for three months whereby they are exposed to knowing more about what the contest is all about. Today’s high moral decadence in Nigeria and across Africa is as a result of cultural neglect… And for us this is different when compared to other contest all over the world because its all about those skills that have been impacted into them The most important thing about it is that it will be used to reconnect them back to their roots as well as prepare them for the future. It will take place on the 26th of March at Civic Centre when we will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Sisi Oge. Delegates from all over the world will be present at the vent. It has been 10 years of raising cultural Ambassadors, of promotion of our values, of talent display and culture. This year, we’ve been able to use Governor Ambode’s office to get a lot of things done. We’ve partnered with countries like Turkey, U.S, among others in order to promote our values. The show is an empowerment tools for nation building. Highlight of the event include Celebrity Match, African Hair Braiding Festival, Arts exhibition & Awards, Fashion Show/Pageant,

What are the criteria for selecting these contestants?

The beauty of an African woman is not only about how beautiful she is It s a display of the African beauty not only in appearance but also in her strength, her value, her skills and mentality I’m not a pageant promoter, but a promoter of African culture and values, so its not just about pageant but rather about values and what it represents

The beauty of an African woman should not be about how beautiful she is, its not a pageant that accommodate chubby people, rather, it talks more about the real African beauty, her strength, her values, mentality and exposure. I’m not a pageant promoter, rather, I believe so much in our values and that is why we are using this platform to promote it.

It has been 10 years on, how has it been?

If you don’t stand on what you believe in and if you don’t push, you won’t get there. It has not been easy especially when you are coming from a different direction which others are not familiar with. The pageant is more about values, focusing on something different entirely. We are looking for a content that can be used to export our values. Sisi Oge Beauty Pageant promotes dignity and it represents who we are, that is why we believe in this course and we are promoting it

What are the Challenges encountered so far?

Challenges are something that you encounter on a daily basis. Whether we like it or not the society is bad and we’ve lost our values. Things have changed, looking at corruption and bad governance in this country is from the top and this cannot help us unless we go back to the root. The degeneration is so high that you will do something wrong and the society will still hail you. Mind you, there are still many of our leaders who stand by these values, let’s learn from them. For instance, Ambassador Olusegun Olusola of blessed memory was my mentor who believed in our values and culture. So this show is like a clarion call to our African values. We need to go back to the root, knowing more about our values and appreciating it.

Most of our leaders no doubt are bad examples, how can it be corrected with the Pageant?

My organization recently came up with “Operation correct your Neighbour”, if your neighbor is doing something wrong correct him or her and the society will be a better place. The problem is about individuals, hence the need to start correcting ourselves. Gone are the days when you discover a true African woman by her strength and values. But if we start doing the right thing once again the society will be a better place for all.
