  • Six killed in ghastly Ebonyi road accident

    Six persons have died while several others sustained serious injuries in a ghastly motor accident in Ebonyi State.

    Of the six dead victims, four are male while two are female, The Nation reliably gathered.

    It was leant that the two buses coming from opposite ends of the road had a head-on collusion on the road while on high speed.

    The incident, it was further gathered, happened on Friday night around 6pm.

    Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), in Ebonyi State, Mr. Okoro Monday, confirmed the incident.

    He said the accident occurred close to Ezzamgbo Bridge on the ever busy Abakaliki-Enugu expressway.

    The spokesman said both the dead and wounded have been evacuated to the Federal Teaching Hospital for prompt attention.

    “Nine persons were injured. Out of the nine, eight were male and one female. Number of persons killed were six; four male, two females”.

    “Those killed were taken to FETHA; two and those injured were also taken to FETHA. The two dead were deposited at the morgue.”

    “Precisely, it was caused by collision. Two vehicles had head-on collision. It occurred very close to Ezzamgbo Bridge. The number of the vehicles involved are AWK 702 XA and JAL 376ZX which belonged to People Choice Motors”, the spokesman said.

     

  • Six killed, DPO shot in cult clashes in Cross River

    At least six persons have been feared killed in cult clashes in Boki local government area and Calabar in Cross River State.

    The Boki incident, a gun duel between rival groups, it was gathered occurred at Ogep-Okosom, claiming three lives with a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) sustaining gunshot wounds.

    The Calabar incident, also a gun duel within and around the University of Calabar, claimed three lives, leading to the early closure of the institution last Friday.

    While it could not be immediately ascertained what was responsible for the Calabar incident, it was learnt that of Boki may not be unconnected with quarrels over the ownership of plantations by politicians in the area.

    A source in Boki said: “It was a nightmare for us as we woke up to these cult members shooting themselves and putting everyone else in danger.

    “They even shot the DPO of our area, who I believe went to check the situation but fortunately he did not die. So far not less than three persons have been killed in the cult fight.

    “This was not how things used to be here. I wonder why cultism has now become the order of the day now.”

    Six killed in fresh Fulani attacks in Benue communities

    People suspected to be Fulani herdsmen went on a fresh rampage in Benue State yesterday, killing six people.

    They attacked the Tiv communities of Tse-Kimbir, Iwednyer, Tombo ward in Logo Local Government area in Benue State.

    Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Moses Game, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) confirmed the attacks but said he could not be sure of the number of casualties.

    A resident of one of the affected areas, Prince Cephas Hough told The Nation that the marauders armed with AK 47 stormed Tse- Kimbir settlement in the early hours of yesterday when the people were asleep.

    He said they went from house to house, robbing the occupants before shooting them.

    The names of those killed in Tse- Kimbir village attack are: Kwaghve Baaki, Terhemen Kwaghve, Ioryue Tsehemba, Zahemen Tsavkuleve, Ahemba Shaku and a visitor (name unknown at press time) said to have come from Nongov, in Guma local government area.

    Cephas House, who is the Public Relations officer (PRO) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi said his aged mother was robbed of her cash and other valuables, while his house in the village was also torched.

    He appealed to the state government to help his people as they are all displaced.

    Six killed in Akwa Ibom petrol tanker crash

    Six persons died yesterday when a petrol tanker crashed at Obong Itam in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on the Uyo-Calabar highway.

    An eyewitness said the driver, whose name could not be ascertained last night, was reportedly running away from the police, who discovered his truck had one dim headlamp.                It was learnt the driver sped off and crashed into a pavement, less than two minutes after escaping from the police.

    A tricycle was reportedly trapped in the accident.

    The eyewitness said all passengers in the tricycle died in the resultant fire.

    The tricycle operator reportedly died in hospital.

    A resident of Obong Itam, Cyril Ekpenyong, said the crash occurred at 8.30 pm.

    He recalled that despite the truck driver’s refusal to stop at the police checkpoint , they did not chase him.

    Ekpenyong said the truck driver might have thought the police would come after him.

    According to him, the tricycle operator and another man in the truck were taken to hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

    He said: “The accident occurred at 8.30 pm. We saw the truck as the police were trying to flag it down because it was with one headlamp, which was not even bright. The driver did not mind the police as he veered to their right to escape.

    “The police did not chase him; he just unnecessarily sped up, apparently thinking that the police were running after him. A few seconds from where the policemen stood, we heard a bang.”

    The state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesman Godsgift Uwen confirmed the incident.

    He said the accident occurred on Monday at 8.30 pm at Kilometre 8, Obong Itam, on the Uyo-Calabar highway.

    According to him, the truck crashed into a pavement and fell on the tricycle, with the five persons dying in the resultant fire.

    Uwen said an injured victim was rushed to hospital. It could not be confirmed if he was dead or alive.

    He said: “The cause of the accident was dangerous driving. It happened at 8.30 pm on Monday. The truck crashed into a pavement and hit a tricycle. As of yesterday (Tuesday), five persons, all men, had been killed.”

     

  • Six killed in Benue

    Six persons were yesterday killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed, following a bloody communal strife in Tor-Donga town in Katsina Ala Local Government, Benue-Northeast Senatorial District of Benue State.

    Tor-Donga is a settlement located on the Katsina Ala-Takum Road. It shares a boundary with Benue and Taraba states. The crisis in the town has been on for over one week before yesterday’s incident.

    Police spokesman Ezeala Daniel confirmed the incident. He said policemen have been drafted to the area to maintain law and other.

    According to an eyewitness, who asked for anonymity, trouble started when a notorious thug, popular known as Ghana, attacked and killed some Fulani herdsmen living in the area a week ago.

    He said the Fulani carried out a reprisal on Ghana’s home and he attempted to seek refuge with his gang members in Tor-Donga township. A vigilance group in the town opposed this.

    The action of the group reportedly annoyed Ghana and he killed the head of the Tor-Donga vigilance group and his deputy.

    The people of Tor-Donga, in retaliation, attacked the elder brother of Ghana, who is the Head Teacher of Doy Secondary School, Harga, set his house and cars ablaze .

    Ezeala said nobody has been arrested.
