    ICAN seeks improved financial skills

The Registrar/Chief Executive, Institute of Chartered Accountants Nigeria (ICAN), Olutoyin Adepate, has emphasised the need for improved skills among accounting experts to tackle money laundering and financial crimes.

At the induction of new members of the Association of Accounting Technicans (AAT) in Lagos, Adepate said the promulgation of the Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism laws demanded specialised professional expertise to deal with emerging issues in the banking and economic environment.

He said accounting technicians need to develop skills to assist the government in the crusade to curtail the growth of the practice. With the government making legislations to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, Adepate urged accounting officers to ensure the soundness, integrity and stability of the financial system is not compromised.

Adepate stressed the need for officers to acquaint themselves with international accounting standards to institutionalise greater transparency in financial reporting.

The registrar said the world is moving to a single set of high quality accounting standards, ones that would make financial statements comparable around the world.

He urged the young practitioners to get them selves equipped to respond to the changes.

    Spellers thrill with skills

About 800 parents, teachers and students from 105 schools in Lagos State were at the Gymnasium Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, last Thursday to watch 341 pupils competing in the primary, junior secondary and senior Secondary categories, in the first stage of the Teammasters Spelling Bee competition.

This year’s competition, organised in conjunction with US Consulate-General Lagos, was described as the best by Graham Stothard, the official pronouncer and Head Master, Lagos Preparatory School, owing to more participants and better logistics.

Of the 341 spellers, 145 qualified for the next stage of the competition. From the Primary category 63 out of 165 spellers qualified; 39 out of 80 spellers scaled through from the Junior secondary school category, while 43 out of 96 spellers survived in the Senior Secondary School cadre.

Nine-year-old Chigbo Amaefule, from Dr Soyemi Memorial Nursery and Primary School and one of the best spellers from the primary category described the competition as an opportunity. “I want to win this competition,” he said.

Muiz Ademola from Araromi Secondary School also said: “I was very anxious and then I prayed that the pronouncer will call what I will be able to hear and spell.”

Muiz also hopes to win the competition.

Other spellers to watch out for in the senior category are Maryam Ogunade and Farridah Animasaun from Heritage Home School, Jennifer Oriaku from Jubilee Model Grammar School, Temiloluwa Adederan from Bellina College, and Sharon Chiekwuiro from Loral International School.

The eventual winner gets to be the US Consular-General for one day. Apart from this, winners of the competition would be sponsored to watch the Scripps competition.
