RRS arrest Slot’s driver for stealing phones

A driver with Slot Nigeria, a phone retail giant, has been arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for allegedly stealing mobile phones and laptops worth N5.95 million.

Olumide Babajide reportedly diverted the goods to Kaduna State, instead of the company’s outlet at Victoria Island he was directed to deliver them.

It was gathered that the company employed the driver in March and he committed the offence on May 2.

Babajide, 42, a Kwara State indigene, it was gathered, sold N1.4 million worth of the consignments to woman he contacted while still in Lagos, dashed out 10 of the phones to passersby in Kaduna and gave two to his mistress.

Police said goods worth N4,654,224 were recovered, while the driver admitted he bought a 1999 model of Peugeot 206, marked DKA859KA for N912,000 from the proceeds of his sales.

Babajide said: “I took the goods from Slot’s outlet in Ikeja. I was to deliver it to another outlet in Victoria Island, Lagos, but I did not.

“Instead, I took the goods to Pam-Pam Hotel, Ikeja, and returned the hilux truck to R and S Hotel, where we normally park the company’s vehicles.

“This wasn’t the first time I would be moving laptops, mobile phones and their accessories from one outlet to the other. Since I joined the company in March and I was assigned the job of a delivery man, it had been my idea to divert the goods and abscond.

“On this occasion, as soon as it was 5:00 p.m. that day, I took a drop from the hotel with the consignments to Ejigbo, where I boarded a Kaduna- bound bus. I had already contacted one of the buyers.

“She bought N1.4 million worth of phones, laptops and phone accessories. I also sold the remaining goods in unit to some other buyers as well.”

The father of three also admitted that he procured a 32-inch Samsung LCD for N62,000 while lodging in a hotel after abandoning his wife and children in Kaduna.

  • Technical teachers laud internship at Slot

Two weeks of internship at Slot Systems Limited, a mobile phone merchandise firm, came to an end for 20 technical college teachers on Monday.

They were exposed to electronics training at the company under the Teachers Industrial Work Experience Scheme (TIWES), an initiative of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, to update the practical knowledge of teachers of the five Government Technical Colleges (GTC).

Under the scheme, the teachers spend some time during the long holidays in firms related to their fields to brush up their knowledge to improve their delivery in the classroom.

At the onset of the event at the Protea Hotel, Ikeja, Executive Secretary of LASTVEB Mr Olawumi Gasper said the board recognised that the teachers needed to interact with practitioners in the private sector to keep them relevant, especially as the students they teach also get exposed during their industrial attachment.

“This is the third in the series of industrial training we have had for teachers.  For the past eight-nine months these teachers have been in the classroom.  But we believe we should expose them to new technology.  We cannot do this alone as government.  The private sector is the pivot of technology.  They have made the investment.  It is the private that absorbs the students after graduation.  What the teachers learn during the internship would be translated to the students,” he said.

Director, Technical Vocational Services, LASTVEB, Mr Laolu Oguntuyi, said the scheme is mandatory for teachers because it helps bridge the gap between the colleges and the industry.

“We discovered that there is a mismatch between the industry and the colleges.  To bridge this gap, we must move closer to the industry,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Slot Technologies Mr Nnamdi Ezeigbo praised the state government for revamping Technical/Vocational Education (TVE) because it provides students with skills  to start up businesses without capital.

He said that was how he started his business without capital – by offering computer repair services.

“The importance of vocational training in any society, especially an emerging society cannot be over emphasized.  One major problem in Nigeria is that SMEs have problem with startup capital.  But if you have sound technical knowledge, the startup capital will be the least of your problems,” he said.

Training Coordinator for Slot Mr Collins Uwadia said the teachers were responsive during the two-week internship and equipped with skills relevant to the mobile technology business.

He was optimistic they would perform better back in the classroom.

A participant, Mrs Mabel Omojake, said she learnt a lot and urged the government to provide the equipment needed to practicalise what they learnt during the internship.

“It was a good one for us as teachers.  It was something that we really value.  I want to appreciate the government for this initiative and urge them to make it regular for us.  I also appeal to them to provide some of the equipment we used to learn because it would help us teach the students,” she said.

“As we are all aware, we now live in an era where business transactions are carried out electronically. In essence, you don’t need to be physically present before you can engage in the business of buying and selling. • Igbo demand ministerial slot

Igbo investors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the incoming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to consider their investors in the FCT when appointing ministers for the territory.

This, according to them, is because they control over 70 per cent of investment in the capital city.

The investors, who spoke through the chairman of Zaudan Pazeri Property Owners Association, Elder Friday Ugoala, at a press conference in Abuja, said the previous FCT Administrations where someone that resides outside the FCT was appointed to govern the affairs of the territory, has had negative effects on the investors who are majorly Igbo residents.

According to Ugoala, when considering the appointment of the minister of the FCT, the incoming government should consider making a native of the FCT minister, while an Igbo man should be made the minister of state, or an Igbo man should be minister, while a native should be minister of state.

“Abuja has major stakeholders, not just those residing in the city. It is on record that Igbo have not less than 70 per cent investment in Abuja in terms of property, merchandise and hospitality industries. So, we have invested heavily in Abuja, and we are demanding that the ministerial slots should be shared with the Igbo who are major stakeholders in the FCT.

“We have reasons to demand for the slot of minister of the FCT, because, he will be sure that our investments are protected. If you consider the outgoing administration of Senator Bala Mohammed, you will notice that there are so many litigations that have to do with our investments and property, which we do not expect to continue that way. We even look forward to a situation whereby those issues in courts would be withdrawn and settled amicably.

“It is obvious that there are two major stakeholders in the FCT, which are the political stakeholders and economic stakeholders. The natives are part of the political stakeholders because they control over 65 per cent of FCT population. So, it could be justice done to these two stakeholders, if the FCT ministerial slots are given to both of them, with due respect to other residents.

“History has shown and events have played out that in the FCT politics, those ministers that come from areas that do not have so many stakes in the FCT, have done so much havoc to investments in Abuja. This is because they do not have people who cry to them about the pains they feel. We have entertained that fear, that if such era continues, our investments will continue to suffer and we do not want that to happen,” he said.
