  • FAAN aviation security personnel slumps, dies at Lagos airport

A Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security personnel, Usman Mohammed  slumped and died on Friday  while on duty at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Olayinka Abioye, immediate past general secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) said yesterday that the deceased was a former executive member of NUATE, FAAN branch.

“We learnt he was on duty yesterday when he suddenly collapsed and died before receiving medical attention,” Abidoye said.

He said the deceased, who is survived by a wife and five children, has been buried, according to Islamic rites.

Abioye described Mohammed’s death as unfortunate, stressing that the FAAN management must give priority and urgent attention to the wellbeing of workers.

According to him, some aviation security staff are being made to work more than the required eight hours per day, without rest periods or compensation.

“It is said that some of them work for 12 hours at a stretch without break simply because the Directorate of Aviation Security is suffering from dearth of adequate manpower,” he alleged.

Abioye said although FAAN had been carrying out recruitments from time to time, such exercises were not on need basis, as expected, but on political expediency.

He said aviation security, which operates under Section 17 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) convention, was critical to airport operations and must be adequately staffed.

Abioye, therefore, urged FAAN management to deploy more personnel to the directorate and also provide adequate medical facilities at the airport to prevent recurrence of such incident.

  • N5m alleged bribe: Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia slumps in court

A former judge of a federal high court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumobogia, yesterday slumped in court.

Justice Ajumogobia, who did not betray any emotion on entering the court in the morning slumped in the court, a few minutes before the commencement of proceedings in the alleged graft suit preferred against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at an Ikeja High Court

It was gathered that the  former judge was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance belonging to the Lagos State judiciary.

The development forced the trial judge, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, to adjourn court proceedings in the charge against her till January 26.

The adjournment was sequel to a request by her lead counsel, Mr. Robert Clarke, SAN.

As at last sitting, the court had fixed yesterday to hear the no case submission of Ajumogobia and Obla.

Ofili-Ajumogobia is standing trial alongside Obla (SAN) on a 31-count charge bordering on an alleged perversion of the course of justice, unlawful enrichment and forgery proffered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Oshodi, while fixing the date to hear the no case application, had ordered counsel  to by the adjourned date, “tidy up” all applications to ensure that the court attends to them simultaneously, saving precious judicial time.

Earlier during proceedings, Mr Robert Clarke (SAN) defence counsel to Ajumogobia, had informed the court that he had filed a Motion on Notice dated October 23 challenging the jurisdiction and competency of the court to hear the case.

He, however, noted that he intended but was yet to file a no-case submission before the court.

Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), Obla’s defence counsel, in his submission, informed the court that he had filed a no-case submission dated September 14 but was yet to receive a response from the EFCC.

Responding, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, the lead prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, admitted to receiving Adedipe’s no-case submission, but noted that he was waiting to receive a similar application from Clarke.

“I  await the first defendant’s counsel to approach me because it is not tidy for me to respond to both applications separately,” Oyedepo said.

The anti-graft agency had alleged that Ofili-Ajumogobia illegally received a sum of $793,800 in several tranches from different sources between 2012 and 2015.

On his part, Obla (SAN) was alleged by the EFCC to have offered a sum of N5million as gratification to Ofili-Ajumogobia so as to pervert the course of justice.

The offences are contrary to Sections 64(1), 82(a) and 69(1) (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State No. 11, 2011

The National Judicial Council (NJC) had at its 87th meeting which was held on October 3, under the chairmanship of Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, recommended the dismissal of Ofili-Ajumogobia as a judge.

The recommendation for dismissal was  on the strength of petitions filed to the NJC containing allegations of corruption against her by Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the EFCC.

  • Fani-Kayode’s co-accused ‘slumps in bathroom’

THE Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that former Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Chairman Mr. Yusuf Danjuma slumped while having a bath and was hospitalised.

He is on trial with former Minister of Aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and former Minister of State for Finance Senator Nenadi Usman for alleged money laundering involving about N4.6 billion.

Their trial was billed to resume yesterday, but Danjuma, a former chairman of Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was absent.

His lawyer K.C Nwofo told the court that he received a call in the early hours of Tuesday from Danjuma’s wife that the third defendant collapsed in the bathroom.  He said the wife had called out neighbours in their Jere Kaduna home, who joined in taking Danjuma to the hospital.

Nwofo said since he was yet to get a copy of the hospital report, he did not know what Danjuma suffered from.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa adjourned until June 11 and 12 for continuation of trial.

  • Ex-council chief slumps, dies after meal

FORMER Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Executive Secretary Tajudeen Jaiye Alabi yesterday slumped and died after eating in a restaurant.

He was confirmed dead in the hospital he was rushed to by the restaurant.

The late Alabi ran a law firm, Jaiye Alabi & Co. He  was said to be on his way to his  chamber in Ikeja but  stopped at the restaurant to eat.

He was buried according to Islamic rites few minutes past 4pm yesterday.

Among those at the funeral were Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef and Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC)  Chairman Otunba Henry Ajomale.

The late Alabi retired as a civil servant before he was appointed as Ejigbo LCDA chief.

Information on his Facebook wall showed that he studied Real Property, Corporate and Public Law at the University of Lagos.

Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman Kolade Alabi, who led some former executive secretaries and  council chairmen to the funeral expressed shock over Alabi’s death.

“He was at my council secretariat last Friday and was full of life. He did not show any sign of illness. We went for a meeting that lasted till 10pm before we departed. This is a rude shock,” Alabi said.

He added: “We still exchanged messages on WhatsApp at the weekend and I  was expecting his reply this morning on a particular job he was undertaking for a foreign firm that wanted to establish their company in Nigeria’’.

Alabi, who was chairman of Conference of 57 Executive Secretaries, said the group was planning an endorsement event for Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

According to him, the late Alabi was the chairman of the former Executive Secretaries and had been carrying everybody along.

“I’m petrified. He was such a wonderful person, humble and cerebral. He brought his civil service experience to bear on the job in his leadership position at Ejigbo LCDA,” he said.

Former Kosofe Local Government Area Executive Secretary Gbemisola Ketiku said he exchanged WhatsApp messages with the late Alabi yesterday morning.

Ketiku said: “Just this morning (yesterday), we chatted on WhatsApp for a meeting scheduled to hold at Oshodi-Isolo Local Government secretariat. The meeting is about the endorsement programme we are planning for Governor Ambode.

“Look at the message (showing The Nation). He wanted the meeting to hold by 8am, but I told him it will be too early that we should shift it till around 9am and he responded that ‘As your lordship pleases’. I’m sure he was on his way to Oshodi for the meeting. This is shocking. I’m still wondering how such a lively person could just die like that.”

Ejigbo LCDA Chairman Monsuru Obe urged the bereaved family to take heart, saying: “On our own part, we will not leave the family to bear the loss alone because the deceased was very caring. Though, the news of his death came to us as a rude shock. We never believe it will be so soon despite the fact that we know everybody will die. He left us too soon; very sad news to our people in Ejigbo’’.

  • Pastor who survived Badoo attack, dies during church service

Pastor who survived Badoo attack, dies during church service

It was a miracle of  sort that Anthony Olawale, a Pastor with the Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) in Ikorodu, Lagos  State, survived an attack on him and his family by Badoo cultists on their residence in July last year.

Eight months after, a fresh tragedy struck: Olawale, slumped and died while running a ‘simple’ errand for his church.

His friend, Moshood Isamotu, writing on his Facebook wall narrated how the end came for Anthony on Sunday, February 18.

His words: “The grieving Orija Community had cause to gather at the residence of the late Pastor Anthony twice in the last one year. In June 2017 the family was in the news. On June 2, 2017 the dreaded Badoo cult had singled out his family for attack at their uncompleted bungalow located at Alhaji Obayemi Street, Lasunwom Estate, opposite Lagos State Poly, Ikorodu probably because of the vulnerability of their abode.

“By the time the killer cultists were done with his five-member family, he was left with a bruised, battered head and an unsettled mind. Though the Pastor was badly hit, the family was however lucky as no life was lost unlike in any other Badoo attack. His family’s escape was strange really as the cultists are known to be merciless and sharp killers; they hardly miss their targets. No victim ever lived to narrate Badoo experience except Pastor Anthony. He received treatment for so long at the Lagos Island Hospital and I believed he was still receiving treatment before his final eclipse.

“But when the community gathered again at their residence last Sunday it was for a condolence. Pastor Anthony had answered to an invitation no mortal has control over when the time is up. Death! Death!”

Recounting the circumstances surrounding Pastor Olawale’s death, Isamotu wrote: “His sunset gave no obvious inkling to the people around him and even to his family. A day before his sudden demise, he attended his Orija Community Development Association Landlords’ Meeting. He was the most visible, hyper-active and took up several duties. He played the role of the chief usher, welcomed people with his trade mark smiles, arranged seats, served refreshments and was later appointed to say the closing and his ‘last prayers’ for the group; oblivious to himself and members that he was signing off and departing from them to eternity, leaving a parting memory.

“According to the wife, late Pastor Anthony woke up early as usual on his last day on earth, very excited and active. No sign that their beloved was on the very final stage of his life. As usual, he went straight to the Church, attached to his own house which he offered the MFM for the work of the Ministry. He said prayers, spoke in tongue and prepared the Church ready before other members arrived for what eventually turned to be his last service on earth. He bounded the devil and all forces of darkness that might want to disrupt the Service but like all mortals, he was limited in knowledge. He could not see and bound death that was to take him away in few hours. Along with other members he said the Service opening prayers as well but ironically never lived to share ‘the grace in fellowship’.

He wrote in detail how he died saying, “that morning, he was everywhere, vivacious, ensuring that all was well. He was said to be so dutiful as if he knew he would never have another opportunity and wanted to be caught in active service doing the ‘Master’s work’. Members equally noticed the high spirit he exuded but none could decipher or smell death that was closing on their host brethren.”

The news of Olawale’s sudden death expectedly disrupted the church service. He was buried on Tuesday, February 20, at his residence.

  • Woman slumps, dies after FSARS arrests son

Woman slumps, dies after FSARS arrests son

A woman has reportedly died of shock after her son’s arrest by some Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad ( FSARS ) operatives.

Mrs Asiata Adeyanju, 42, slumped and died close to her 9, Ajenifuja Street, Ilupeju, Lagos home on Wednesday night. She was said to be hypertensive.

The Nation gathered that the FSARS operatives from Ipakodo Division in Ikorodu, who have been allegedly picking people up in the area in the last two weeks, arrested Muiz, the deceased’s 17-year-old son, when he  was about switching on the generator in front of their home.

The operatives, said to be  in black vests with the inscription “FSARS”, allegedly slapped Muiz and hurled him into an unmarked van. A neighbour simply identified as Emmanuel, a teacher, was said to have been slapped by the operatives when he tried to stop them from taking the boy away.

By the time Muiz’s parents, who were in their room, learnt of his arrest, the  operatives had whisked him away with others arrested at various spots. It was gathered that the late Mrs Adeyanju ran out with only her wrapper and chased the police van.

The Nation learnt that Mrs Adeyanju slumped at a spot. Residents said she died while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Her widower, Musendiku Adeyanju, who was said to be observing his evening prayer at the time of the incident, later met with the operatives  at Ilupeju Junction, off Adesiyan Street, to secure his son’s release. The Nation learnt that Muiz was released after the  operatives were told his  mother had been rushed to the hospital.

It was gathered that the operatives hurriedly left the area when they learnt of Muiz’s mother’s death.  None of those arrested was taken to the police station. They allegedly secured their release at a price.

Describing his encounter with the operatives, Muiz said: “I was pulling the generator’s starter when the policemen grabbed my trousers and asked me to enter the bus. Before I knew what was going on, two of the officers started slapping me. They took me away with some other people I didn’t know. They were moving round the area, picking up people. They wore black shirts with ‘FSARS’ boldly written on them.”

There was wailing on Ajenifuja Street yesterday when Mrs Adeyanju’s  body was brought back home.  Sympathisers rained curses on the operatives, describing FSARS as  “evil organisation”.

Some residents complained that the operatives had been coming to the area for “illegal raids and indiscriminate arrests”.

At his wife’s funeral performed by some Islamic clerics, Mr. Adeyanju, 43, was all tears.

He described his wife’s death as “devastating agony”, wondering what his son’s offence was to warrant his arrest by the FSARS.

He said: “I returned from work around 9:00 p.m., after which my wife served my food. After the dinner, I performed ablution to observe the prayers I missed. I was in the middle of the prayers when there was power outage. My wife instructed Muiz to start the  generator in front of the house.

“The boy was arrested by FSARS when he was about to put on the set. I overheard one of my neighbours, Mr. Emmanuel, telling the policemen that the boy lives in the house. I had to break the prayers to attend to the situation. Before I got to the scene, the police van had left the spot. We ran after them but we didn’t see them.

“I was returning home to take my car and search for the police van when I saw my wife at the street junction, gasping. People around rushed her to a hospital. I joined neighbours in search for the police van. We met the FSARS officers at a junction in Ilupeju and I explained to them my wife had collapsed because of my son’s arrest. That was when they released the boy to us. We had barely left that scene when I got a call that my wife had died.”

The deceased’s elder sister, Mrs. Fausat Usman, described her as ‘’a quiet and cool-headed woman.”

She confirmed that the late Mrs. Adeyanju was hypertensive.

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police (SP), did not pick this reporter’s calls.

He cut the call after his phone persistently rang last night.

He did not also respond to messages sent to his phone.
