  • Europa snub for Podolski

On-loan Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski has been left out of Inter Milan’s squad for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

The Germany international is a surprise omission from Roberto Mancini’s list after starting all five games since arriving on loan from the Gunners last month.

UEFA regulations state that one of three new players entitled to be registered for the knockout stages can have previously played in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season.

But rather than Podolski, who would therefore have been eligible despite playing for the Gunners in the Champions League group stage, Mancini has selected Xherdan Shaqiri, who represented Bayern Munich in that competition.

Dani Osvado, on loan at Inter from Southampton, was also left out of the 23.

But Davide Santon, who joined the club from Newcastle on Monday, and George Puscas, who made his Serie A debut in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo, do make the cut.

de Boer reveals failed bid for Chelsea’s Marco van

Ajax manager Frank de Boer has revealed to Voetbal International that Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel turned down a move to the club in the winter transfer window.

Van Ginkel, 22, joined Milan on a season-long deal on September 1, but has so far made just five appearances for a total of 218 minutes, with injuries hampering his chance to establish a place in the line-up.

Even when fit, though, the Dutchman has failed to figure in Filippo Inzaghi’s plans, with Chelsea said to be far from pleased about the situation.

Football agent Gianluca Fiorini, who was involved in the deal which brought Van Ginkel to the San Siro, revealed to Sportmediaset.it last month that the Premier League club were on the verge of cancelling the agreement, ahead of sending him out elsewhere for the second half of the campaign.

“Chelsea are very annoyed because they wanted the player where he would get more room,” he said at the time. “They are considering other possible loans. The next few matches will be decisive.”

De Boer has since revealed that Ajax made an approach for Van Ginkel, but the former Vitesse product’s decision to snub a return to the Eredivisie saw them opt to splash €6 million on Heerenveen starlet Daley Sinkgraven instead.

“We asked Van Ginkel if he wanted to move, because Davy Klaassen and Thulani Serero were not fit,” he said.

“At first we were looking at him and after that we focussed on Sinkgraven for the future. Due to injuries we needed Sinkgraven right away. And besides that, Van Ginkel didn’t want to come.”

Signing for Chelsea from childhood club Vitesse in the summer of 2013 for around £8 million, Van Ginkel made just four appearances during his first season in England before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a September League Cup tie at Swindon Town.

The Netherlands international made his comeback with the Under-21s towards the end of the campaign, before impressing with the first-team in pre-season, but the club’s plethora of midfield options saw Jose Mourinho opt to ship him out before the summer transfer deadline.

  • Inter snub Mikel for Medel

It has been reported that Chelsea are desperate to get John Obi Mikel off the wage bill before the close of the summer transfer window, with the midfielder proposed to several Italian teams for a transfer fee in the region of 6 million Euros.

The Nigeria international is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge following the acquisition of Fabregas and the imminent arrival of German World Cup winner Sami Khedira from Real Madrid.

Before the World Cup, the Nigeria international was heavily courted by Inter Milan, but after an indifferent performance for the Super Eagles at the tournament in Brazil, the Nerazzurri shifted their focus to Yann Mvila and promptly signed him.

And the powers that be at the Serie A outfit have almost concluded transfer talks with another defensive midfielder Gary Medel (Swansea City), writes fcinternews.it.

Few months back, the ball was in Chelsea’s court but the club were dillydallying and failed to strike terms with Inter Milan.

Now, the tables have turned and the Londoners have proposed Mikel to Inter Milan, but a deal is unlikely to materialize because of the reasons earlier mentioned.

  • Agu, Amadi salute Enyeama despite FIFA’s snub

Agu, Amadi salute Enyeama despite FIFA’s snub

Aloy Agu and Emeka Amadi, former Nigeria goalkeepers, have  hailed the heroics of Super Eagles’ first choice goalie at the Brazil 2014 World Cup, Vincent Enyeama despite not being on the shortlist of the three finalists for FIFA’s Golden Glove award.

Enyeama whose agility kept Nigeria in the tournament until the 2-0 defeat to France in the Round of 16 was overlooked along with America’s Tim Howard who made a record 16-save performance against Belgium in the round of 16.

The three finalists were from teams that advanced to at least the quarterfinals namely, Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas, Germany’s Manuel Neuer and Argentina’s Sergio Romero.

“There is no doubt that  Enyeama would have been picked by FIFA as one of the three best goalkeepers at the World Cup if the Super Eagles had reached at least the quarter finals,” said Agu, a member of Super Eagles’ 1994 AFCON-winning team, who lost his teeth while on duty for Nigeria against Ghana in Kumasi in 1993.

“He did so well in all the  matches he played  but we should not forget that FIFA has indices for picking the best players and goalkeepers at their tournaments. Not picking Enyeama has to do with the fact that the Super Eagles did not progress further than the Round of 16.”

Speaking in the same vein, Amadi, the Golden Eaglets’ goalkeeper trainer who guided Dele Alampasu to win FIFA’s Golden Glove award at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, admitted that Enyeama was one of the best goalkeepers at Brazil 2014.

“We must be proud of what Enyeama did at the World Cup but my favourite for the Golden Glove Award is Neuer and this has nothing to do with the fact that I’d lived in Germany before,” Amadi added.

  • Eneramo reveals : Eagles snub was painful

Eneramo reveals : Eagles snub was painful

MTNFootball.com: How would you describe your time in Turkey?

Eneramo: So far, so good, my time here in turkey has been wonderful and great. I have been enjoy good seasons here with Sivasspor and getting goals.

It was speculated you will leave Sivasspor before this season began, are you thinking of leaving the club?

I am not thinking of leaving Sivasspor now. I have a contract with them which runs till May 2013, so I am poised to end the season with them and move to bigger club for a bigger challenge.

How did you feel being left out of Eagles despite your goals for Sivasspor?

Honestly, it was painful. I deserved to be in Eagles considering my form and performance for my club. It is unfortunate the team coach didn’t consider me for selection. I think he should have given me equal opportunity like the others.

Are you hoping for an Eagles recall?

Yes, it is my wish, I want to return to national team because it is always my dream to play for Nigeria. I will be glad if I am given a chance to return. I did well while I was there with four goals from 10 games. With my performance with my club too I think I merit it.

What can you say about the Eagles success at the AFCON in South Africa?

It was a good moment for us all as Nigerians after a long wait. I told you before the competition started that we have a good team that could do well in South Africa, if they take their chances well, which they did.

Do you regret you opted to play for Nigeria and not Tunisia?

No, I have never regretted that decision. Choosing Nigeria, my fatherland, ahead of Tunisia will always be the right decision for me. I chose Nigeria because I want to make my country proud. So, it is always painful when I don’t get chance with the team even when I deserve to. But now I hope to be back.

How can you compare the Tunisian league with the league in Turkey?

They are both strong and good leagues, but the Turkish league is stronger and could even be compared to the English or German league because there are a lot of world-class players playing in Turkey. It is more competitive here than Tunisia.

Do you miss anything about Tunisia?

Yes, of course, I was an idol while I was in Tunisia with Esperance. Everybody loved me. I miss the fans, my friends, teammates and the officials. I had good time in Tunisia winning the league championship every season that I played.

What are your targets with Sivasspor this season?

We want to finish among top five teams. We started well and we hope to continue that way.

    Adepoju backs Osaze, Martins snub

EX-NIGERIA international Mutiu Adepoju said he is in full support of Stephen Keshi’s list for the upcoming African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Keshi on Friday released a list of 17 foreign-based professionals to add up to the 23 home-based colleagues ahead of the team’s second phase of camping billed to commence in Faro Portugal on December 27 and with a host of high-profile players like Peter Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins and Taye Taiwo not listed by the coach, the 1994 Nations Cup winning member said the coach’s list can’t be faulted.

“He knows what he wants and he must have reasons for inviting those that are on the list and those that are not included. There will always be issue on the list but I know he means well for the team and Nigeria and he can’t be faulted for what he has done.”

Adepoju said the list of players in the team are potential winners of the competition urging Nigerians to show support for the coach.

“The list consists a mixture of experienced and ambitious players and with good preparations and support they will make Nigeria proud at the Nations Cup,” he said.
