Insecurity: SDP faults political interference in military operations

    …urges stronger intelligence, foreign partnerships

The national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Gabam, has raised concerns over what he described as political interference in Nigeria’s military operations.

He warned that countermanding battlefield decisions without clear constitutional authority poses grave dangers to national security.

Speaking during a televised interview on Nigeria’s security situation, Gabam argued that the President bears ultimate responsibility for both kinetic and non-kinetic security strategies, stressing that no individual or institution has the constitutional power to override presidential directives to the military.

According to him, reports of troops being ordered to stand down at critical moments sometimes when they were on the verge of reclaiming territory or making strategic arrests are deeply troubling and require explanation at the highest level.

He said, “We have seen communications, though unofficial, suggesting that the military had made serious inroads and were about to record major successes, only for them to receive instructions to withdraw. The question is: who has the authority to give such an order apart from the President? If anyone else can countermand a presidential directive, then we are in a very dangerous situation.”

He referenced unresolved controversies surrounding the withdrawal of troops in parts of Kebbi State during incidents involving mass kidnappings, noting that despite debates at the National Assembly and complaints by state authorities, there has been no official clarification on who ordered the military to leave those locations.

Gabam insisted that Nigeria has the capacity to defeat non-state armed groups if decisive leadership is exercised, citing past administrations where firm presidential directives led to swift security responses.

He said, “When a president gives a direct order on security, it is final. No minister, no appointee, not even the Chief of Defence Staff can counter that order without reverting to the President. That chain of command must be respected.”

Gabam urged the Federal Government to revive security negotiations with Washington, recalling that under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria successfully negotiated the purchase of Super Tucano aircraft following discussions with then U.S. President Donald Trump.

“There is no reason why that level of understanding cannot be restored,” he said, adding that Nigeria should also explore partnerships with other technologically advanced countries.

Turning to regional security, Gabam expressed concern over instability in the Sahel following the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from ECOWAS, warning that porous borders have allowed armed fighters and weapons to flow into Nigeria.

He warned that Nigeria’s security risks are compounded by political tensions, approaching elections, logistical challenges, poverty, and widespread social frustration.

“You have hungry, angry populations, weaponized poverty, and political crises converging at the same time,” he said. “There must be deliberate efforts to reduce national tension.”

  • I’m surprised by judgment of Supreme Court, says Jerry Gana

Presidential aspirant under the platform of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Prof. Jerry Gana, has said he was disappointed by the Supreme Court’s judgment that declared a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, the authentic presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party.

While Duke emerged the candidate of the party, a lower court nullified his nomination and declared a former Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana, as the candidate.

Not satisfied with the judgement, Duke approached the Court of Appeal which upturned the lower court’s judgement and declared him the candidate.

Also not satisfied, Gana approached the Supreme Court.

The apex court, however, on Friday upheld the appellate court’s decision and declared Duke the party’s candidate.

The Director-General of Gana’s campaign team, Dr Ike Neliaku, in a statement on Sunday titled “Before the Curtain Draws” said the apex court was not supreme because it was infallible but only because it was the final court in the country.

According to him, time would reveal the consequences of the judgment.

He said members of the team would continue to uphold their collective principles for the emergence of a new and credible political order in Nigeria.

He said although the beginning might have been tough, victory was assured.

The statement read, “As disappointed as we may all feel, it is important to remind ourselves of the saying that the Supreme Court is not supreme because it is infallible but only because it is the final court of the land.

“It is only time that will reveal the grave consequences and implications of that judgment.

“We wish to most sincerely acknowledge the support, solidarity, goodwill and faithfulness demonstrated by numerous party members, friends and associates across the nation, for standing with us throughout this journey. It is deeply encouraging to find many men and women committed to the ideals of integrity in politics and governance.

“We salute the courage and bravery of these distinguished compatriots. We will continue to invest in these virtues, insisting that, contrary to the majority opinion of today’s men, the end does not necessarily, and must not, justify the means.

“By God’s grace, within this period, we have grown and bonded into one big and formidable political family, with structures across the country. We shall continue to march on and flourish, under the leadership of Prof Jerry Gana, CON.

“Together, we will continue to resolutely uphold our collective principles and vision for the emergence of a new and credible political order in Nigeria. The beginning may have been tough, but with tenacity of heart and sincerity of purpose, victory is assured.

“We are grateful to God for giving us the strength, grace and courage to have come this far. As in the proverbial saying, ‘weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.’

“We hope to soon convene a consultative meeting to jointly review and decide our collective future.”

  • My life in danger, says Rivers AAC gov candidate

Barely one week to April 2 commencement of collation of results of March 9 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State, governorship candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara, has alleged his life is in danger.

He also alleged his running mate, Chief Akpo Bomba Yeeh, who  defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, collected N200 million from Governor Nyesom Wike to ditch the AAC.

Yeeh, 67, an Ogoni, was on Monday afternoon received in Government House, Port Harcourt by Wike and other leaders of PDP.

The 38-year-old Awara, an engineer, in an interview with our correspondents on phone, expressed surprise over the resignation of his running mate.

Awara stated that gunmen were on the trail of him and members of his family.

According to him: “I saw my running mate’s resignation online. I have not received the resignation letter he claimed to have addressed to me. I do not know about Yeeh’s resignation.

“I have not received any resignation letter from my deputy. Christians the world over believe in fair play but Wike’s actions and reactions cast serious doubts on his sense of morality.

“Wike had earlier said the AAC was not a party to reckon with. It is shocking he could shamelessly use public funds meant for the development of Rivers State to shop for deputy governorship candidates of opposition parties.

“The same Rivers governor had earlier bought off the deputy governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, despite existing provisions, which clearly show that deputies are part owners of joint tickets, who cannot be easily separated from their candidates, once they have appeared on the ballot.

“Despite the antics of Wike, Rivers people have obviously taken the position that the outgoing governor can no longer lead them.

“I won the March 9 governorship election. Whatever INEC plans to do, the Rivers people will resist attempts to steal their mandate.”

“My name and party logo were inexplicably removed from the ballot papers for the Feb 23, 2019 election, which threw my teeming supporters who trooped out to cast their votes to me into confusion on the voting day,” he said.

Describing the experience as harrowing, Chukwuelue lamented that the situation has extensively eroded his name, image and public standing.

He said, “Many of my supporters were erroneously informed that I sold my opportunity to some other candidate.

“Those that masterminded the wrongful removal of my name from the ballot were clearly afraid of my burgeoning political popularity ahead the exercise in the area.

“I have hired a team of lawyers who had put together all the necessary documents and filed the petition waiting to take off proceedings.”

  • Adeniran takes over from Falae as SDP chairman

The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof. Tunde Adeniran, would from Monday act as the de facto national chairman of the SDP, it was learnt on Friday.

The development followed the official resignation of the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae.

A statement by the National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, explained: “The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae, GCON, has officially stepped aside from his position. He communicated his decision to the Party on Friday January 8, 2019.

“Chief Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Minister of Finance, predicated his decision on personal reasons which bordered on his desire to retire from active partisan politics.

“He had earlier indicated his intention to step aside on turning 80 but was prevailed upon to tarry till after the 2018 National Convention of the Party.

“Thereafter, he once again expressed his readiness to quit after the successful Convention, but was made to stay back to steer the Party out of the litigations that emanated from the presidential primaries of the party.

“He was made to understand that as the leader of the party, it was not good for him to leave the Party in the midst of internal squabbles. He therefore stayed back.

“In taking this final decision, he has recommended, in line with the party Constitution, that the Deputy National Chairman (South), Professor Tunde Adeniran, OFR should step in, effective Monday January 11, 2019 as the de facto National Chairman in acting capacity pending ratification at the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and National Convention thereafter.

“Professor Tunde Adeniran, a former Minister of Education and Ambassador to Germany comes with a vast wealth of experience garnered over long years in academia, public service, as a public intellectual and as a political party administrator.

“His coming as National Chairman offers the hope of robustly repositioning the party as a major force in Nigeria’s political arena and as a credible national alternative party.

“He will sustain and build on the great achievement of the former National Chairman while further promoting the core values and ideologies of the party which centre on social justice, equity, human dignity, good governance and well-being of the Nigerian people.

  • Why Falae resigned as our chairman, by SDP

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Chief Olu Falae resigned as chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Friday because of old age.

The Director, Media & Publicity of SDP, Yemi Akinbode, said his resignation was not new to the leadership of the party.

His resignation came hours after the party leaders adopted All Progressives Congress (APC)’s President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the February 16 presidential election.

Falae stated in his resignation letter that his ailing health is part of the reasons for his resignation.

But Akinbode said Falae was part of the party leadership that adopted Buhari as SDP’s presidential candidate.

He said: “He stepped down as chairman of the party. He ought to have stepped down on September 31, 2018.

“That was when he clocked 80 years of age. But I do not know what caused the delay.

“He had earlier made it known that when he clocks 80 he will quit politics. It is not a new thing.

“I feel that he was trying to wait after the election tactically to quit. But he did that now. And he cannot deny the adoption of President Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the SDP because he was part of the entire process.

  • Gana kicks over adoption of Buhari by SDP

Former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana has rejected the adoption of President Muhammadu Buhari by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as its candidate for the February 16 presidential poll.

Gana and his G19 presidential campaign team also condemned the action as the height of betrayal by the party’s leadership.

Briefing reporters on the development on Friday in Abuja, Dr. Ike Neliaku, Director General, G19 Presidential Campaign Team of Prof. Jerry Gana, said majority of the authentic and principled National Executive Committee (NEC) members were not invited to the meeting.

Neliaku said: ” On recent happenings within our party, the Social Democratic Party, we are therefore compelled to once again reach out to you and millions of Nigerians who are shocked by the pronouncement of yesterday by some renegade members of our Party, the SDP, under the guise of a National Executive Committee (NEC) purportedly met in Abuja and resolved to adopt the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as its consensus candidate in the forthcoming presidential election.

“We wish to categorically condemn and dissociate ourselves from this unfortunate, retrogressive, outrageous, unjust, mercantilist, disgraceful betrayal of trust and antiparty activity led by a small faction loyal to the running mate to Donald Duke, Alhaji Shehu Gabam.

“Their pronouncement puts the party in a political mudslide that not only put the party in bad light but is injurious to all other SDP Candidates standing election on the platform of the party.

“This repulsive duplicity is unacceptable to our Campaign Team, our supporters and millions of esteemed SDP members whose voices we represent and on whose mandate this statement is issued.

“We note that majority of authentic and principled NEC members were not invited to the said meeting; while some that were invited boycotted the meeting.

“Likewise, hirelings were recruited to bear the identities of genuine NEC members, who, though were invited but chose not to be a part of their envisaged insidious plot packaged in a desperate bid to create a perception of acceptability so as to enhance the value of their merchandise and ultimately increase the revenue of their transaction.”

The team added: “We also like to state that the purported suspension of the National Publicity Secretary and some State chairmen of our party is laughable and unacceptable as due process and constitutional provisions were not followed.”

Gana’s campaign team said while it was the right and prerogative of a political party to nominate, endorse or even adopt a candidate of its choice, the action must represent the popular will of the people.

It said: “The process must be inclusive, and the outcome must be transparent. In this instance, these were not so.

“We use this medium to call on all SDP members, supporters and advocates to take a definite stand against this totally unacceptable precedence.

“While we await the judgment of the Supreme Court, we will continue to maintain our single focus and keep hope alive.”

Gana, according to Neliaku will convene a stakeholder’s conference on Monday, in Abuja to mobilise, plan and organise how to win elections in various constituencies.
