  • Sokoto assists victims of Illela rainstorm

    Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to deliver relief materials to victims of rainstorm at Illela, Araba, Gati and surrounding villages in Illela Local Government Area.

    The Friday rainstorm destroyed houses, livestock and farm produce. Many were rendered homeless.

    A government delegation, led by the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Usman Danmadami, visited the affected villages to commiserate with victims.

    At the palace of the District Head of Illela, Danmadami said the government will work with local authorities to rehabilitate victims.

    The delegation presented cash to victims.

    The Wakilin Sarkin Rafin Illela, Alhaji Sahabi Isa, thanked the governor for his concern and prated God to reward him.

    Zamfara appoints new emir of Tsafe

    The Zamfara State Government on Sunday announced Alhaji Muhammadu Bawa as the 18th Emir of Tsafe Emirate Council.

    The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muttaka Rini, made the announcement in Gusau, the state capital.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bawa replaced the former Emir Alhaji Habibu Aliyu who died on Wednesday at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto after a brief illness.

    Until his appointment, Bawa was the Chairman, State Community and Social Development Projects (CSDP).

    Bawa started as a secondary school teacher and became a principal of various government secondary schools in old Sokoto State.

    He then joined the Petroleum Equalisation Trust Fund as Executive Secretary where he resigned to become the Chairman of the state CSDP.

  • Sokoto releases N900m for scholarship arrears

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has approved the release of N900 million for the payment of tuition fees and upkeep allowances to students of Sokoto origin studying in local and foreign tertiary institutions covering 2015, 2016 and 2017 academic years.

    This followed the submission of the report of the committee on the verification of students entitled for scholarship to the Governor last week Monday.

    The committee, led by Ambassador Shehu Wurno, said 14,532 students were verified and certified to benefit from government scholarship in the state.

    Addressing reporters in his office Tuesday, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Sahabi Isa Gada, said the report had standardized the list of students under government scholarship and only verified students will benefit from the payments.

    He said already, the ministry had set up a contact team that would ensure smooth payment of the students and in record time.

    “From the submission of the committee, the sum of N688,174,579, being registration and upkeep allowance, is being owed for the current 2016/2017 academic session. The balance of the funds released is for the payment of backlog of entitlements of our foreign students.

    “The welfare of our students is a matter of priority to government. We’ve contacted their representatives and their schools and payment will start after necessary procedure is completed.

    “So for this payment, both local and foreign students will benefit. In fact, we are paying backlog of entitlements to foreign students to ensure all of them are up to date in their obligations to their schools,” Gada added.

  • Emir of Tsafe dies at 62

    The Emir of Tsafe in Zamfara, Alhaji Habibu Aliyu is dead.

    The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muttaqa Rini, announced the demise of the monarch in a statement in Gusau.

    Rini said the emir, aged 62, died in the early hours of Wednesday at the Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto after a brief illness.

    He said that the deceased left behind four wives, 25 children and 62 grandchildren.

    The commissioner said that his remains would be buried at his palace in Tsafe by 2p.m today according to Islamic rites.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late emir had spent 26 years on the throne.

    He succeeded his father in 1991.

    NASS to ensure sustainable funding, moral support for NYSC – Wamakko

    The immediate past Governor of Sokoto state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, (APC-Sokoto), Thursday said the National Assembly will continue to ensure sustainable funding of and moral support for the National Youth Service Scheme activities.

    He described the National Youths Service Corps Scheme (NYSC), as dependable veritable tool for enhancing peace, unity and national development.

    Wamakko spoke when the Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier-Gen. Zakari Kazaure paid him a condolence visit on the demise of his younger, member, HoRs, Kware/Wamakko federal constituency, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad Wamakko Speaker.

    According to the Senate Committee Chairman on Basic and Secondary Education, the scheme remains too critical and virtually indispensable in the scheme of affairs of Nigeria in the past four decades.

    He noted that, corps members have been contributing in bolstering the socio-economic development of Nigeria in many areas of health, education, democracy, infrastructural development among numerous others.

    He therefore, admonished corps members in the country to always regard any part of the nation they found themselves as home.

    Wamakko who is also the ‘Marafan Hausa’ further reiterated that Nigeria would continue to remain united, peaceful and indivisible.

    Speaking, Brigadier-General Kazaure, represented by the Sokoto State Coordinator of the scheme, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, described the demise of the late lawmaker as a national loss.

    Also, similar condolence message was delivered from the management of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), by Engineer Solomon Kwaghe.

    It will be recalled that the deceased lawmaker was the Vice Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on FERMA.

  • Agency to unveil new scheme in Sokoto

    The Executive Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, has said the agency will roll out a new community health influencers/volunteer scheme in Sokoto to boost  immunisation at the grassroots.

    He said the programme would also deepen the fight against child killer diseases and create focal persons to supervise immunisation efforts.

    Shuaib stated this when he led his management team and partners to  visit Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

    The partners were led by the new USAID Mission Director in Nigeria, Mr. Stephen Haykin.

    Shuaib said the decision to roll out the programme in Sokoto was based on the commitment of the state government to improving primary healthcare and health services delivery.

    “I am happy to say that the state government’s commitment to settle all outstanding financial commitments with partners has filled all financial gap in funding of projects. This has thrown the ball to our court and we are working to ensure full implementation of all projects on schedule,”  he said.

    He added that the Federal Government had received requests for technical support from the state government on routine immunisation and already that request is being implemented

    Governor Tambuwal commended the USAID Nigeria and the NPHCDA for their commitment to improve health governance structures and well-being of the people of Sokoto.

    “As the ED noted, we have no funding gap that has not been filled. Our biggest concern at the moment is data generation and interpretation. We are working with all partners to improve collection of data to ensure targeted persons get the required assistance they need,” Tambuwal said

    He said his administration had approved the establishment of ward development committees headed by monarchs and other influential persons to serve as focal persons in their communities.

  • Tambuwal allocates land to NAF for construction of a secondary school in Sokoto

    THE Nigerian Airforce has begun plans for the construction of a secondary school in Sokoto, the state capital, following the allocation of land by Governor Aminu WaziriTambuwal.

    The disclosure of the land allocated to the force was made in Sokoto on Tuesday by Tambuwal.

    He said his administration remain committed to promoting academic excellence while efforts are being made to  maintain standards as measure to strengthen the education sector in the state.

    According to the governor, who dropped the hint while speaking during an inspection tour of Army Children school being constructed at Shagari town, headquarters of Shagari Local Government Area  of the state “Our doors are always open to liaise with all relevant stakeholders to improve the standard of education in Sokoto State,”

    The development, which was contained in a statement issued by Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, quoted the governor as assuring that his government will continue to work towards filling the deficit in number of schools especially in the rural areas.

    To this end, the state government said it has so far constructed 54 new schools to cater for areas that need such.

    The schools constructed according to the statement include 35 new Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and 19 new Senior Secondary Schools (SSS).

    “The locations of the schools are JSS Jamali (Binji LGA), Kurdulla and Akwalkiti (Gudu LGA), Bankanu and Maruda in Kware LGA and JSS Ciroman Bello and Tudun Yola in Sokoto North LGA.

    “Others include JSS Kasarawa, Yar’Abba, Gidan Salanke, Kaura Kimba and Gidan Bubu in Wamakko LGA, JSS Rikina and Kwannawa in Dange-Shuni LGA, JSS Girkau and Fakku in Kebbe LGA, JSS Sanyi, Lambara, Horo and Ginga in Shagari LGA, JSS Alasan in tambuwal LGA and JSS Torankawa, Binji Muza, Bakale and Fakka in Yabo local government area.

    “The rest include JSS Garin Dole and Kwakwazo in Goronyo LGA, JSS Arume in ISa LGA, JSS Riji in Rabah LGA, Lajinge, Dantudu, Labau, kalgo, Langegu, Marakawa and Sangerawa in Sabon Birni LGA and lastly JSS Alkamu and Chacho in Wurno LGA.

  • Airforce to build school in Sokoto

    The Sokoto State government has allocated land to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to build a new secondary school in Sokoto town.

    Governor Aminu Tambuwal, in a statement by his spokesman Imam Imam, said: “Our doors are always open to liaise with relevant stakeholders to improve the standard of education in Sokoto.”

    Tabuwal spoke during an inspection of Army Children School in Shagari council, which is under construction.

    The governor said the government has built 54 new schools – 35 Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and 19 Senior Secondary Schools (SSS)- to filling the deficit in schools, especially in the rural areas.

    Social Media diverting attention of girls from studies, Sultan laments

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III, has expressed concern at a development where social media are  diverting the attention of students in the country.

    Abubakar expressed the feeling in Sokoto on Sunday at the closing ceremony of the 6th National Edition of the Quranic Recitation Competition.

    The Sultan said:” There is a disturbing development where the attention of students is being diverted from their studies.

    “This is through the use of various social media like Facebook, Twitter,Whatsapp, 2Go and Instagram, among others,’’ he said

    The traditional ruler urged youths, particularly girls, to stop spending too much time on social media at the expense of other engagements that would add more values to their life.

    ”The rate at which girls are spending time on social network is worrisome and this poses imminent danger to our society.

    “Girls are the nerve centre of our moral and societal development and if they derail, the whole society will be in danger because they are our mothers and care givers.”

    Abubakar advised parents to ensure that their daughters spend more time on meaningful things, like reciting the Holy Qur’an.

    ”Doing so will make them better mothers and care givers’’.

    The monarch also urged Muslims to desist from doing things capable of tarnishing the image of their religion.

    The Sultan, who congratulated the winners of the competition, donated N10, 000 to each of the 89 participants ,while the overall winner,  Husna Nura from Katsina State, got N100,000.

    The sultan further promised to host the 7th edition of the competition in 2018.

    In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal said that the competition would encourage girls to memorise the whole sixty chapters of the Holy Qur’an.

    The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bashir Garba, Tambuwal represented the governor at the occasion.

    Tambuwal announced a gift of hajj seat to the overall winner of the competition in addition to N150, 000 and a deep freezer, among other gifts.

    Other winners also went home with deep freezers and cash among other items.

    NAN also reports that twenty two states participated in the competition which was deducated for non-Arabic Girls’ Secondary Schools and it was hosted by Sokoto State Government.( NAN)

  • One dies, 100 houses destroyed in Sokoto rainstorm

    One person died and about 100 houses were destroyed in a rainstorm that swept through 15 villages in Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State, the Chairman, Abdullahi Haruna, told reporters yesterday.

    Haruna said seven others, including a mother and her three children, were injured in the Friday disaster. Six of the seven have been discharged from the hospital.

    According to him, the council secretariat, schools and other public places were destroyed.

    “The strong wind and heavy rain started about 5pm on Friday, and lasted for 30 minutes, but the damage it caused was enormous.

    “So far, we have identified more than 100 houses destroyed. A committee has been set up to assess the extent of the damage,” Haruna said.

    The chairman attributed the extent of the damage to the use of substandard building materials.

    He directed the Works Department of the council to enforce compliance with standard building regulations forthwith.

    Haruna added that the council had contacted the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for help, and their responses were positive.
