  • ‘Harry, the Soldier Prince’

Almost all the major international network news stations are still engrossed in the celebration of the new royal baby, George Alexander Louis. He is to be known as His Royal Highness, Prince George of Cambridge. The frenzy and wide coverage of his birth reminded me of a mini-documentary sometime ago on the charming Prince Harry Williams, the proud father of the baby who is now third in line to the British throne. The documentary, which was aired on Cable News Network, CNN, was titled: “Royal Watchers; Harry, the Soldier Prince”.
The documentary was on Prince Harry and his numerous engagements. Starting from when he was a baby, the documentary ran through the death of Diana (his mother), his sojourn in the British Army, his diplomatic engagements within Britain and other places, his deployment to Afghanistan for military duties and all that.
Throughout the period the stuff lasted, I stayed glued to the TV set, watching the moving and captivating scenes. During the burial of his mother, Harry exuded the confidence unexpected of a lad at his age. He was composed, calm and devoid of any trace of emotional distraction, as he followed the hearse bearing the body of his mother in an ornamental casket adorned with a bouquet of flowers.
As a cadet in the elite Sandhurst Military Academy, Harry was a beautiful sight to behold in his trimmed and well-fitted military uniform. His squad mates who were intermittently interviewed described him as a young officer who responded well to training and military discipline. He was said to mix freely and devoid of the opulence of royalty. Every now and then, he was seen in the video clips either marching side by side with his mates or engaged in one military exercise or another.
When he was deployed to the battle front in Afghanistan, he was seen flying a combat helicopter along with some of his colleagues. Again, he was shown on foot patrol in full combat gear. The scene then changed from Southern Afghanistan to the northern part of the country, where he went on patrol with the armoured unit stationed there.
The highlight of that patrol was when his team spotted an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) on their route. The tank came to a halt as Harry got in touch with the bomb disposal unit which mobilised and promptly arrived at the scene in a Tomahawk helicopter. On the approach of the helicopter, Harry had thrown out a fire cracker from the tank, ostensibly to pinpoint the area where the device was buried. This was to prevent the helicopter from landing right on top of the IED, which could spell doom. In a few minutes, the device was detonated and Harry and his team continued their patrol.
The scenes of his diplomatic shuttles include when he represented his maternal grandmother, the Queen, in Jamaica, Haiti, Canada and the rest. Here, he exhibited the statesman in him to the delight of his numerous hosts and the Queen. Everywhere, he went, he distinguished himself as someone who had the passion to mix freely with children and the downtrodden, shaking their hands, hugging them when necessary and sharing chocolates and drinks with them.
Of course, his wedding that shook Britain was also well advertised. From Harry, the considerate lover who became a teacher and role model for his wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, to Kate herself who, within a few months, rose to become Britain’s fashion ambassador. In one of the clips, some of the dresses and shoes she wore on some of her engagements became widely sought after as scores of people invaded the shops and emptied them from the shelves as soon as they saw her wear them.
On a visit to Hollywood in California, Harry and Kate were the cynosure of the crowd that lined the routes they took. Not even the well-known actors and actresses that graced the event received the sort of attention and loud ovation that Harry and his heartthrob were bestowed on by the ecstatic crowd. The crowd also carried several placards, one of which read: “Harry and Kate: All we want is a wave”. That underscores the degree of excitement and warmth displayed by the crowd towards Harry and Kate.
But by far, the most compelling part of the episode which sent cold shivers down my spines was the visit by Harry to Lesotho, a tiny country located on the southern fringes of Africa where he spent two months in an African jungle among the blacks. What was really astonishing in this part of the entire documentary was that he spent the whole two months attending to and caring for AIDS sufferers who form a large proportion of the population. In a brief interview, he expressed optimism that the problems bedevilling the population would be tackled. But he said it was not something that could be done in two or three years. This means that it was going to be a long distance race, especially when he was told that the greatest danger was the primitive belief among the people that “once an AIDS sufferer goes to bed with a minor, the disease could be cured instantly”.
In his parting remarks there, Harry promised to get back to the country at least twice in a year, “if his military duties would allow him.” That statement underscores his commitment to assist the poor, a deep sense of empathy with their plight as well as discipline as a military officer who does not want his royal background to interfere with his normal life. It would be recalled that the late Diana, Harry’s mother, was involved in many shuttles to the neglected parts of Africa, Asia and other Third World countries where she offered succour and compassion for the poor during her eventful life time.
As I watched the documentary from start to finish, something struck me. Here was Harry born with the proverbial silver spoon, raised in royalty yet had passion, compassion and empathy for the dregs of the earth. I remember a time in the past when he was shown in some British newspapers sleeping on the bare floor, in chilling winter cold with a Nigerian youth, his companion. At that time, all he wanted was to experience the life of the homeless tramps in the society who have nowhere to rest their heads.
The irony of it all is that such display of commonality, as exhibited by Harry, is, to say the least, alien to us in this clime and perhaps, in Africa in general. Those who call themselves royal bloods in this part of the world only have passion to acquire wealth, exhibit outlandish lifestyles, acquire expensive wardrobes, show off crazy limousines and all the rest.
If you look around, when such spoilt children take over their families’ businesses, they easily run them aground. They are lawless, disrespectful, arrogant and lazy. In most cases, they grow up without any good idea of life except to keep on partying, frolicking in night clubs, drug addiction and all other despicable engagements. By and large, Harry’s documentary is a study in humility, the type that is rarely seen in this part of the universe.
Now that he is a father. It is expected that Harry will devote more time to his family, wife and the new baby. The British Royal Household has an enduring legacy of good upbringing, care and affection. And they are revered all over the place.
The other day at an Entrepreneurs’ Organisation, EO, Forum in London, we had the privilege of having dinner right at the British Royal Museum. It was a delightful sight to behold, with various royal ornaments dating back to centuries on display. The highlight of the night was the ceremonial locking of the Queen’s gate at Buckingham Palace. It was such a treasured memory that will linger in the participants’ sub-consciousness for a long time to come. Such is the royalty and regality associated with the British monarchy which Harry and George, his son, third in line to the British throne, are expected to preserve!

Soldier, six suspected terrorists killed in JTF, Boko Haram gun duel

A soldier and six suspected members of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, lay dead yesterday in Kano in the latest confrontation between operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the sect.

Several other people were wounded in the early morning clash in Sheka Quarters of the metropolis.

The soldier was said to be from the 3rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kano.

The wounded ones were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Fighting broke out at about 4.30 am when JTF operatives stormed a building suspected to have been harbouring the suspects.

The discovery of the building itself followed the arrest of some militants at Mariri Quarters.

Spokeman for the task force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, said the building had been demolished and some weapons recovered.

He said five women believed to be their wives and three toddlers were rescued during the operation.

Iweha said:”We engaged the terrorists in a gun duel which lasted for some hours. On our arrival in the house, they immediately opened fire, but our superior fire power subdued them, which resulted in the killing of six of their members while a soldier died of gun wound in the hospital.

“We were able to rescue five women and three toddlers, one of whom was hurt during the raid.”

Recovered from the sect were two AK47 rifles, 150 assorted ammunition, some explosives and five magazines.

Task Force kills gunmen, loses soldier

The Joint Task Force on Friday said it killed six gunmen but lost a soldier during a raid of a hideout at Sheka in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

JTF spokesman Capt Ikedichi Iweha told newsmen in Kano that the incident occurred in an early morning raid on Friday.

He said the operation followed the arrest of a suspected gunman at Mariri in Kano on Thursday.

He said the suspect who revealed the hideout, had earlier planned to attack the popular Kantin Kwari Textile Market, Kano.

Two AK-47 rifles were recovered, while five women and three children were evacuated from the house during the three-hour operation, he said.

He called on residents to continue to cooperate with security agencies for peace to be restored in the state.

  • Soldier, policemen killed in Kano, Yobe Boko Haram attacks

A soldier and two policemen were yesterday killed by suspected Boko Haram gunmen in Yobe and Kano states.

Another policeman was injured in Kano in an ambush on a security patrol vehicle.

The soldier was reportedly killed in an attack at Ngelzarma, a satellite town on the Kano-Maiduguri highway, about 45 kilometres West of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

Police Commissioner Sanusi Rufai said a policeman was injured in the attack.

It was learnt that a soldier was still missing as at the time of filing this report yesterday.

Rufai said: “There was an ambush, not an attack. A Joint Task Force (JTF) patrol vehicle was ambushed by some gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, on the road in Ngelzarma. A soldier was killed and a policeman sustained injuries.”

Another account, however, said some soldiers were attacked at a food joint by the suspected Boko Haram gunmen on four motorcycles.

The gunmen reportedly threw Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs) and petrol bombs, killing a soldier and injuring two others, when the JTF patrol vehicles veered off the road at 8.30pm on Monday.

There was no official confirmation on the destruction in the town.

But an eyewitness, simply identified as Hamisu, alleged that 19 shops and a house belonging to a 60-year-old farmer were set ablaze by angry soldiers after the attackers had fled.

It was gathered that many residents, who were caught in the attack, slept in nearby bushes or villages while others fled the town to neighbouring Damaturu and Potiskum.

In Kano, the gunmen reportedly ambushed the police patrol team at Ungwar Uku Quarters in the state capital.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who were said to be on motorbike, opened fire on the patrol team.

The attack coincided with the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration celebrated across Nigeria.

As at press time yesterday, no arrest had been made.

But the area was condoned off by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) as the police combed the area for possible suspects.

Police spokesman Magaji Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), confirmed the death of the two policemen.

He said the third policeman was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.

Yesterday’s attack came on the heels of a similar attack on Monday; two policemen were killed and two civilians were injured.

  • Soldier voids vote of polling unit

A soldier voided the vote of Polling Unit 7, Ward 2 of Igbotako in Okitipupa LGA.

Labour Party members insisted the vote will not be counted and they began throwing stones and beating up ACN and PDP members.

During accreditation, the polling officers made a mistake while counting the number of accredited voters. They counted 244. While voting was ongoing, the polling officer discovered that some people who came for accreditation had their thumb marked, but their names were not ticked on the list.

This mistake was reported to all the three parties’ agents, who agreed that voting should continue. At the end of voting, 254 voted.

Labour Party agent flared up, insisting the vote must be cancelled. He denied ever being informed of any mistake. The Presiding Officer said the vote should be counted while any complaints should be written on the form provided for party agents. All entreaties by law enforcement agents and two other party agents to allow the vote be counted were met with strong refusal.

An Army officer declared the vote void when threats of violence were growing beyond control, a decision that drew chants from Labour Party supporters.

Consequently, the results from other polling units were not announced as expected.

  • Soldier kills student over quarrel with girlfriend

Soldier kills student over quarrel with girlfriend

Emmanuel Papa Ebonyi dreamt of a great future. A future where he would pass his examinations in flying colours, have a great job and support his siblings who had always been there for him. Unfortunately, all these dreams were terminated when a soldier snuffed life out of him just because he tried to be a Good Samaritan.

His sister Felicia Samuel Ebonyi tells the story in tears. “The unfortunate incident happened in the early hours of 9th August (2012). On that day, my brother, a Higher National Diploma I (HND I) student of Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, Kaduna State met his untimely death in the hands of one Captain Olufela Doyin Erizia.”

Like so many other people, she just could not believe that it was true. So did it happen? you ask. “My brother was in the company of his friends and they visited Mate Bar Night Club, PZ Sabongari area of Zaria on the night of the previous day to celebrate the birthday of a friend. That was where he met Captain Olufela D. Erizia and his friends.”

    Peace maker bears the brunt

Everything went well for a while. But suddenly there was a quarrel between Erizia and his girlfriend. Ebonyi intervened warning Erizia against fighting with his girlfriend. That unfortunately turned out to be a grievous offence in Erizia’s dictionary. Infuriated, he took the laws into his hands beating Ebonyi black and blue.

“He beat up my brother until he was half dead. Along the line his friends rescued him from the soldier and were trying to leave the premises in the vehicle in which they came, but he (Erizia) still chased them and was struggling with the driver of the vehicle. If Ebonyi had known the calamity that would befall him, he would not stop Erizia from fighting his girlfriend, but his sympathy for the womenfolk landed him in an unexpected grave.” Sadly, she continues her story: “When the incident happened, one of my brother’s friends called me on phone and asked me to come over. They took us to the barracks and I met another eye witness. It was not the soldier’s girlfriend, it was another girl. The girlfriend actually ran away and I have been trying to get her to come and tell her side of the story.”

What about her parents and the other siblings? How are they taking the news of her brother’s demise? “My parents are both late. I have four other siblings and they are all very sad about the development. He is the second to the last born in the family. We used to have an elder sister who died in 2007. She was ill and initially the ailment was diagnosed as typhoid. It was later discovered that it was hepatitis and her death was quite painful.”

Erizia was apprehended, taken for questioning and interrogations after which he was taken to the Area Command Police Station, Zaria. “However nothing has been heard ever since. We have been kept in the dark on this issue because not only did they refuse to hand over the man to the police authorities but also did not have courtesy to say a word. Sources at the barracks were even saying that he had been posted to another duty beat. It is on this basis that we are calling on the Military HQ, well-meaning Nigerians, human rights activists to see to this matter and make sure that Erizia is brought to book.”

According to Sadau Garba of the Kaduna Human Rights Association “The offence of the late Ebonyi was that he pleaded with Capt Erizia not to manhandle a lady he jerked up and molested. After mercilessly beating Ebonyi a friend, one Femi David, rushed him to Salama Hospital, Sabongari, Zaria and they directed that he should be taken to Shika Teaching Hospital due to the critical condition. It was on the way to Shika that Emmanuel gave up the ghost.”

He added that “the family members of the late Ebonyi have made several visits to the Kaduna State Police Command headquarters but the authorities of the Army Barracks Zaria, are not willing to release the said Captain Erizia to the police to investigate this inhuman, barbaric and dastardly act.”

The Nation also spoke with DSP Aminu Lawal, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna and he confirmed the case saying investigation was in progress.

He also said, “The authorities of the Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria could not ascertain if Ebonyi was a student of the institution.”

How is the culprit going to be brought to book is what the Ebonyi family is asking.
