Kel-P denies Solidstar’s claims, says he created his own sound

Record producer Kel-P has addressed claims by singer Solidstar, who alleged that he was “groomed” by him and that his musical style was stolen and used for Burna Boy.

Speaking in a recent interview on the Urban96 podcast, Kel-P dismissed Solidstar’s January accusations, stating that he developed his own musical style and that some artists mistakenly believe they own a sound just because a producer worked with them.

He also reflected on his early collaboration with Solidstar, revealing that he worked with the singer without receiving any payment.

Kel-P explained that he eventually moved on to other opportunities, including his work with Burna Boy.

The producer further disclosed that after the COVID-19 lockdown, Solidstar reached out to congratulate him on his deal with Burna Boy and sought his help in securing a recording deal.

Kel-P’s response comes amid Solidstar’s allegations that his sound was used in Burna Boy’s Grammy-nominated album, African Giant.

He said, “So many artists have said I’m giving their vibes to other artists. What they don’t understand is that I created the sound and I give to them so when they hear that same sound from other artist, they feel entitled.

“Solidstar was one of the first artists I worked with. We were making music back and forth. To be honest, I didn’t make a dime from him. I was just making music with him because he’s talented. But when I got the opportunity to work with Burna Boy, I stopped giving attention to other artists.

“And Solidstar reached out to me after the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021 or 2022. He followed me on Instagram and came to my DM to congratulate me on my deal with Burna Boy. He asked me to look out for a recording deal for him and I promised to keep in touch. But after two days, he unfollowed me. I didn’t take it personal.

“Months later, he came back and followed me. He hit me up in the DM but I didn’t respond to him so he unfollowed me again. Then a month ago, a friend sent me a screenshot of Solidstar’s rant about me on X. I was shocked.”
