The minister noted that sports and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme were among the national programmes deepening the unity of the country and called for more attention to the nation’s sports sector.

  • Dalung seeks state of emergency in Plateau, other states

The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, on Friday called for State of Emergency in his home state, Plateau State and other troubled states in the country.

This move, according to him, will check the persistent killing of innocent people in the affected states.

He spoke with State House  correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Minister also condemned the renewed killing of people in some local government areas of Plateau in the past few days.

He maintained that it has become a matter of necessity for President Muhammadu Buhari to impose state of emergency in Plateau, Benue, Zamfara and Taraba to stop the killings.

He faulted those blaming the federal government over the persistent crisis in Plateau State.

According to him, Plateau state and the local government authorities should be held responsible for the problem.

The ‘collapse’ of local government administration, he noted, had contributed immensely to the inability of the security personnel to arrest the problems.

He said “The Plateau crisis can be traced to many years of inaction by previous and current administrations in Plateau state despite the Federal Government’s efforts to address the problem.

“It is disheartening that Plateau state has been witnessing killings of innocent citizens in the last four to five days and this is very annoying and disturbing to the government and inhabitants of the state.

“I alerted the Federal Executive Council on Sept. 5 on the need to take drastic and emergency measures to tackle the crisis because the local and state governments have failed in their responsibility of offering useful information to security agents despite the huge resources being spent on security.

“It has therefore become imperative for the federal government to declare state of emergency in Plateau and other troubled states across the country so as to put a stop to the killings,’’ he said.

Warning that nobody should politicize the killing of innocent Nigerians, he said that the federal government was doing all it could to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

The government, according to him, had already put in place measures to check cases of insecurity, stressing that Nigeria needed peace and stability for the country to progress and achieve meaningful development.

“But security personnel alone cannot achieve much in addressing the problem without the support and cooperation of the state and local governments as well as the local communities

“There is the need for collaboration between all the three tiers of government, the local communities and Youth Councils in order to find a lasting solution to the crisis.” he said

He identified lack of strong and dedicated leadership at both local and state levels as main factor responsible for the inability of the combined efforts of the security personnel to check the killings in Plateau, Benue, Taraba, Zamfara and other troubled states.

He also sought for the re-reintroduction of Crises Resolution Committee at the local government level.

The committee’s membership, he said, should be drawn from religious bodies, traditional institution, Cattle Breeders’ Association, farmers’ organisations, women and youth organisations.

On the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning the 2019 presidential election, Dalung said the party’s presidential candidate, Buhari, had no serious challenger from the opposition parties.

According to the minister, no Nigerian politician in recent history is as popular and admirable as President Buhari, saying that the president has millions of votes already guaranteed him by his ‘traditional and die-hard’ supporters come Feb. 2019.

He dismissed the insinuation that President Buhari was desperate for power, saying that the president was only interested in addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges for the general good of the country.

  • Dalung launches sport devt fund with own salary

Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youths and Sports Development, on Monday launched the Elite Athlete Development Grant with his one month salary.

He says the gesture will end leadership tussles in sport federations, insecurity and other vices.

Dalung launched the grant, organised by Nigeria Sports Development Fund Incorporation (NSDFI) in Abuja.

According to him, government funding has been the cause of leadership crisis in federations.

“If sports are funded by the public through Non- Governmental organisations(NGOs), few people will be interested in the boards.

“I am happy to launch this fund with my one month salary because it marks begining of solution to sports crisis in the country.

“It is a right step towards joining other nations that do well in sports through public funding, I urge sports loving individuals and organisations to donate and support the fund.

” If sports are financed through funds like this, sports will develop faster, federations will be more transparent and accountable while leadership will be interesting to genuine sports administrators alone.

“Therefore, I thank NSDFI for leading the revolution to stop controversies in sports federations,” he said.

However, Dalung reminded management of NSDFI of the importance of transparency and accountability in handling such fund.

“Public donors deserve transparency in the use of their money.

“Individual and corporate donors will only give more if they ensure judicious use of their money.

“I urge you to earn their trust so than this initiative can be sustained. I have no doubt in the ability of the management,” he said.

Similarly, Adesola, permanent secretary in the ministry, commended the fund.

” With the launching of this fund, there is hope that sports ministry will soon revert to its primary role of paying federations affiliation dues and grassroots development of sports,” he said.

Earlier, Olajide Fashikun, Director-General, NSDFI, called for government support so that the organisation could adequately play it’s role.

“As former athletes, we decided to form and start the fund so that young athletes can have better chances to develop their talents and bring more glory to the country.”

Also, Mary Onyali, a five-time Olympian and Executive Director, NSDFI, said the urge to ensure that upcoming athletes developed under conducive condition prompted her to be part of the initiative.

“We have tried it before in 1994 and that helped me to hit the podium during 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, U.S.

“I want Nigeria to be having at least six or more Mary Onyalis at every point in time,” she said.

Ibrahim Gusau, President, Athletics Federation of Nigeria and his Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation counterpart were part of the dignitaries that launched the fund.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each of selected 90 athletes from Taekwondo, Athletics, Wrestling, Shooting and Para-sports federations will be given N10 million grants between now and end of November.

NAN also reports that Ismail Mohammed, a male Taekwondo athlete and John Ogbonna,a 74kg male wrester, emerged the maiden winners of the grant.(NAN)

  • We stand by rule of law – Dalung

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Solomon Dalung, on Tuesday congratulated the Federal Government for averting a FIFA ban on Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, said the minister lauded the efforts of the Vice-President which aborted the ban.

“I welcome the intervention of the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, which saved Nigeria from a suspension threat by FIFA in the lingering crisis of the FootbaIl Federation.

”I believe in the resolution of the crisis which has a history dating back to almost 20 years since the removal of Mr Anthony Kojo Williams from office.

“This crisis cannot be solved with a temporary measure or scratched on the surface.

”The intervention of the vice-president should not be viewed as different from an attempt to abate an escalating situation, “ Dalung said.

He, however, said that the matter had a subsisting judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“As a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, who took oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will prefer to stand with the rule of law instead of the opinion of men.

”I want to appeal to Nigerians to remain calm and give support to the NFF Elders Stakeholders Reconciliation Committee which is made up of reputable past presidents and general secretaries of the NFF with vast knowledge, experience and competence to resolve this crisis once and for all.

”We are a constitutional democracy and the doctrine of separation of powers is the foundation of democratic experience, therefore, the rule of law is the only mechanism that guarantees liberty and freedom of citizens.

”This administration was elected on the change mantra meaning that impunity has no accommodation anywhere, so Nigerians must learn to believe and practise the doctrine of the rule of law.

”I believe we shall overcome this if we remain within the confines and dictates of the laws of our country.

“As we celebrate Sallah, let’s remain law abiding citizens,” Dalung said.

FIFA on Monday stepped down its plan to ban Nigeria’s football governing body over its leadership crisis.

In stepping down threat, FIFA said it received assurances that the legitimate leadership of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under the presidency of Amaju Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi had been restored to office.

“In view of these circumstances, FIFA deems that the conditions set by the decision of the Bureau of the FIFA Council have now been met and consequently the suspension of the NFF will not take effect.

“FIFA will continue to closely monitor the situation in order to ensure that FIFA’s rules and regulations are fully adhered to,” the world football body said.

  • NFF: I don’t want to go prison for contempt of court – Dalung

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung said on Friday he would prefer to keep his reputation intact in the crisis bedeviling the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The minister said he complied with the Supreme Court judgment in the matter in order not be jailed for contempt of court.

Dalung spoke in Asaba, Asaba, while inspecting the ongoing construction work at the Stephen Keshi Stadium venue of the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship (ASAC).

The minister said Chris Giwa and Amaju Pinnick tussle for the top NFF post had rocked the peace in the sports community.

There is resurgence of crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in recent time and I think it is important that Nigerians are informed about this crisis,” he said.

Dalung said he believed both parties have learnt the hard way from the recent Supreme Court judgment, adding that the way forward was for the feuding parties to shift ground and allow peace rein.

He said the Federal Government did not interfere in the dispute but was dragged into it by the feuding parties.

He said: “For us as government, we have basically just complied with the order of court and let us not forget that government is limited from interfering with the domestic affairs of football. And both parties dragged government into this matter, so, government is just a victim and not even when people argued that FIFA will ban the country.”
