    Ogba, Itemuagbor, Obi endorse Niger Delta Sports Festival

    Vice president of the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC), Chief Solomon Ogba, foremost Sports Marketer and founder of Okpekpe Road Race, Mike Itemuagbor and top Sports Journalist and Media Strategist, Mitchel Obi have lent their voices in support of the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF).

    The personalities with backgrounds in sports administration, marketing and media spoke separately in commendation of the festival, an initiative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) with Dunamis Icon as consultants.

    “This is a positive addition to the evolving sports business ecosystem because it is not just a springboard for identifying talents, it also offers a platform to truly hone the skills of those already discovered”, remarked Obi, who served as Special Advisor to a former Sports Minister, late Anthony Ikhazabor.

    He said the festival will be a flagship event in the region that would trigger interest in sports among the youths and people of the region.

    Edo State-born Itemuagbor commended the NDDC for the decision to add sports in the list of their intervention projects in the region, adding that: “This speaks directly to the problem of youth restiveness which is of great concern to our people.”

    Egwero wins Warri Relays men’s 100m in 10.33secs

    Ogho-Oghene Egwero has run 10.33secs to win the men’s 100m at the 2017 Warri Relays and Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Grand Prix 2 on Tuesday in Ozoro, Delta.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Keene Motukisi from Niger Republic returned 10.41secs to place second, while Harry Chukwudi ran 10.47secs to clinch the third position.

    Martin Ogieriakhi emerged winner in the 100m hurdles for men with 13.82secs as Abejoye Oyeniyi finished second after running 14:04secs and Bashiru Abdulahi ran 14.16secs to claim third position.In the 100m women, Isoken Igbinosun won having run 11.49 secs, while Aniekeme Alphonsus and Ntia Mercy ran 11.51 and 11.65secs to clinch second and third positions respectively.

    In the 100m women’s hurdles, Amusun Oluwatobi was first with 12.1secs, beating Grace Ayemoba who finished in 13.53secs and Efe Favour who returned 13.63secs for the third place.

    Also, Yinka Ajayi came first with 51.30secs in the women’s 400m and Nathaniel Samson emerged winner in the 400m for men with 46.18 seconds.

    Henry Okorie finished first in the men’s 400m hurdles with 52.09 seconds, beating Timothy Emogbone and Prior Chibuzor to second and third positions respectively.

    In the women’s Javelin, Kelechi Nwanaga won, throwing a distance of 58.15m.

    Other games featured included long jump, 4 x100m relay among others.

    The President of AFN, Solomon Ogba told NAN that the meet would inspire another generation of athletes that would do the country and Africa proud in global competitions.

    Ogba commended the brilliant performances of the athletes and promised more of such trials in the state.

    He appealed to corporate organisations to assist the Delta Government in the development of sports.

    Egwero, winner of the men’s 100m, told NAN that he was satisfied with the 10.33secs feat he ran.

    “Individually, we have to start motivating ourselves and if there are competitions, it will boost our performances,’’ he said.

    Egwero, 29, and 1.52m tall had competed at the 2009 World Championships and the 2010 World Indoor Championships without reaching the final.

    Okowa restates commitment to youths, sports development

    Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has restated his administration’s commitment to the development of sports and empowerment of youths.

    Okowa made the assertion as the 2017 Warri Relays and Confederation of Africa Athletics Grand (CAA) Prix 2 began at the Delta Polytechnic, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

    The event, organised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in conjunction with the Delta Government, is meant to prepare the country’s athletes for future national and international competitions.

    The governor, represented by the Speaker, Delta House of Assembly, Mr Sheriff Oborevwori, said the government would continue to support the development of sports.

    “We are always glad to be part of this type of event and other activities geared towards the encouragement, empowerment and development of our youths.

    “My administration will continue to support athletics and other sports.

    “As you are already aware, Delta is a home for sports and we have produced international and national champions for decades,’’ he said.

    The President of AFN, Chief Solomon Ogba, commended the Delta Government for the sponsorship.

    Ogba also said the state was famous for producing national and international champions, including Blessing Okagbare, an Olympic medalist in 200m.

    Some of the events featured at the event included 100m (men and women), 4x100m relay, javelin and high jump.

    Meanwhile, fastest woman in Africa, Blessing Okagbare strongest contender at the championships will be Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Ivory Coast sprinter’ Murielle Ahoure. However, Nigeria’s male athletes would not be in attendance because of their inability to qualify for various athletics championships in recent times.

    In an interview with the SportingLife, President of AFN, Solomon Ogba admitted that ever since the retirement of Fastest man in Africa, Olusoji Fasuba, the country has been struggling to enter its male athletes in competitions.

    “For the boys, we have always had problem, after Uchenna Emedolu, in fact, Fasuba was the only star we had then.After Fasuba left, we have not had any, we have been struggling but trying to rebuild,” Ogba said.

    Sprint legend, Usain Bolt is among six Jamaicans confirmed for the Diamond League meeting in Zurich today. Bolt will compete in the men’s 100 metres, his first race since the Moscow World Championships.

    Bolt will race against three other Jamaicans in the short sprint Nesta Carter, the 100-metre bronze medallist at the Moscow World Championships, Nickel Ashmeade and Kemar Bailey Cole.

    The race also includes American Justin Gatlin, who won silver medal behind Bolt in the 100 metre at the Moscow World Championships.
