    Is Soludo on the ropes?

    • By Pat Onukwuli

Sir: From the bustling streets of Onitsha through the suave spots of Awka to the serene corners of Nnewi, the timeless borders of Anambra’s cities have witnessed the rise and fall of leaders, those who carved their names in stone and those who faded into whispers of time. Effectively, one year away from the conclusion of his tenure, Governor Charles Soludo, once a beacon of hope, finds himself on precarious ground. The sacking of his media team, the closing of political opponents’ offices, and his increasingly hardened rhetoric signal a shift that raises a fundamental question: Is he on the ropes?

The sacking of a media team is a trite chapter in the books of troubled governments. When a leader starts blaming the people tasked with managing his public image, it often reveals a deep-seated anxiety about lost control. It is a signal of panic.

Soludo’s case is more than just an administrative reshuffling; it is the frantic reaction of a principal who knows his tenure has not gone as planned. He is like the potter whose clay has begun to crack, and instead of pausing to mend the flaws, he angrily blames the wheels. Yet, the pot remains unshaped, and Ndi Anambra watch in despair as their leader loses his grip.

Soludo came into power with a massive mandate of hope to transform the state into a hub of progress. The people believed in his promises and that he was the right man to steer them through turbulent waters. But like the evening sun that sets too soon, his time is running out, and the golden promises he once made are dimming. The roads to be paved with progress remain potholed; the infrastructure remains neglected, and the once-vibrant markets of Main Market, Ochanja, Afor Nkpor, New Parts and Mgbuka struggle under insecurity, poor governance, and high taxation.

It is usual for leaders to look for scapegoats in moments of crisis, but Soludo has no one to blame but himself. His government’s failures are not the result of external sabotage or unfair targeting. They result from squandered goodwill, poor decisions, and an inability to focus on what truly matters. Instead of building bridges with the institutions that could have supported his legacy, he quarrelled. He took on the traditional institution of the state, locked horns with the clergy, and fought political opponents who dared to criticise him.

Rather than continuing this path of distraction and blame-shifting, Governor Soludo must look hard in the mirror. His new media team may try to spin a different narrative, but no amount of rebranding will change the reality on the ground if he does not change track. People’s goodwill cannot be rebuilt through spin but earned through results. As the saying goes, you do not have unsuitable soldiers but bad generals. His administration’s failures are not due to poor communication but poor leadership.

As he appears to be on the ropes, it is not too late to regain his balance. He must let go of the distractions, the quarrels, the blame games. As the curtain falls, he must stop being the bull in the China shop, wrecking everything in frustration. Instead, he should be the potter who mends what is broken and the shepherd who guides his flock through the storm. He must, therefore, become the calm leader Ndi Anambra once believed in, a ruler who can still make a difference if he chooses to focus on the work that truly matters.

Ultimately, history will judge him not by the fights he fought but by the promises he kept. If he fails to turn the tide, his name will join the long list of Nigerian politicians who rose with great promise only to fall to the whims of ego and mis-governance.

As the sun sets on his tenure, the question remains: Will Soludo rise from the ropes and fight for his legacy, or will he continue down the path of panic and distraction, leaving behind nothing but broken promises and shattered dreams? The choice is his, and the clock is ticking.

  • APGA crisis: Edozie Njoku can’t threaten Soludo, says Ezeokenwa

APGA crisis: Edozie Njoku can’t threaten Soludo, says Ezeokenwa

National chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), on Friday described the purported suspension of leaders of the party by the Edozie Njoku faction as delusional.

He also condemned what he described as reckless statements made by Njoku against the Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and other party members.

Ezeokenwa said this while briefing reporters in Abuja at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

He spoke in response to a pronouncement by a factional APGA Chairman, Edozie Njoku, suspending some key leaders of the party including himself.

Ezeokenwa described as laughable a situation where a non-party member would wake up one morning and announce the suspension of bonafide members including the party’s national leader.

He said: “We categorically condemn Chief Edozie Njoku’s reckless statements against Governor Chukwuma Soludo and other party members.

“It is with deep regret that we witness the farcical and delusional antics of Chief Njoku, who yesterday brazenly claimed to have suspended esteemed members of APGA, including myself, Barr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, and Dr. Alex Obiogbulu.

“This purported suspension, issued from a place of sheer imagination rather than any legitimate authority, is not only laughable but also serves as a clear indication of the lengths to which Njoku will go to distract from his own inadequacies.

“Let us be unequivocal: Edozie Njoku does not possess the locus to suspend loyal and dedicated members of our party. His actions reflect a desperate attempt to exert control over a party of which he is not even a member.

“By what right does a stranger seek to suspend the very architects of APGA’s success?

“It is like an intruder attempting to evict homeowners from their own property. Such audacity is not only unfounded but also offensive to the integrity of our party.”

Ezeokenwa said the party would not stand idly by and allow individuals or groups who don’t share APGA’s spirit of dedication to the service of humanity to destroy the sacrifices of its founding fathers.

He assured APGA members and the general that while the party is diligently pursuing legal means to resolve issues, it will not allow impostors to drag its reputation into the mud.

“At the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, APGA, and I were granted leave to appeal the Court of Appeal judgment of 28 June 2024 to the Supreme Court.

“It was the said judgment of the Court of Appeal that Njoku and his co-travelers have hinged their illicit claim on, notwithstanding that the said judgment did not make any express order recognizing Njoku as APGA National Chairman.

“In reiterating the firm principle of law on the need to join APGA and I in the case, the Court of Appeal confirmed that this move was “apposite and bespoke,” as I was validly elected Chairman of the party.

“Those were the exact statements of the Court of Appeal. But Njoku came out in full force in his characteristic manner and again spewed lies about what transpired in the court, going through the back to appeal the court ruling after misleading the public that he won again at the Court of Appeal,” he said.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared that the local government election scheduled for September 28, 2024, will proceed as planned, emphasising that no individual or force can halt it.

Soludo confidently stated: “That date is unstoppable,” reaffirming his commitment to the election.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), chaired by Genevieve Osakwe, had earlier confirmed the date.

Addressing a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, Soludo stressed the importance of unity within the party as they prepare for the upcoming election.

He reminded the candidates that to whom much was given, much was expected, stressing that the major focus was for them to develop their respective local government areas

He commended Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC and the party, for their hard work.

The governor insisted that no faction existed within the party, but that the party was now more united under the national chairmanship of Sly Ezeokenwa, expressing optimism that the law would eventually take effect in due cause.

Soludo vows to punish parents enrolling children in illegal schools in Anambra

As schools in Anambra state prepare to reopen for the first term of the 2024/2025 academic session, Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has advised parents to make early arrangements and enroll their children only in government-recognized schools in the state.

The commissioner, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, September 4, warned that parents enrolling children in any illegal schools would be treated as accomplices.

She said: “Any parent who registered a child in a non-government recognized school shall be ready to bear the consequences of such action.

The Commissioner further reiterated Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s position on the right of the child, saying, “Every child belongs to the State, and any infringement against the child’s right to quality education shall be seriously viewed by the state.”
