Tinubu rescued Nigeria’s economy from collapse, restored financial solvency – Soludo

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has attested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration rescued Nigeria’s economy from imminent collapse and returned public finances to a path of solvency through bold structural reforms.

Speaking on June 12 at “The Platform Nigeria”, a civic engagement forum organised by The Covenant Nation and hosted by Pastor Poju Oyemade in Lagos, Governor Soludo praised the Tinubu administration’s economic agenda and called for a national rebirth rooted in ethics, ideology, and citizen responsibility.

According statement issued on Friday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Soludo, who is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said “the audacious structural reforms embarked upon by the current administration of HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu have rescued the economy from the tipping point”.

Soludo recounted that the economy, as of May 2023, resembled a “standing dead horse,” warning that public finances were on the verge of insolvency with potentially dire consequences, including mass layoffs and salary arrears.

“Public finance is back on a solvency path, and macro fundamentals are recovering positively,” he declared.

Backing his position with endorsements from global financial institutions, Soludo said: “The endorsements by the World Bank, IMF, London Financial Times, rating agencies—Fitch, Moody’s—are well deserved.”

He pointed out that although he had historically critiqued these institutions, their current praise for Nigeria’s reform trajectory should not be dismissed.

“Funny enough, when these institutions criticise the government, some people use them to validate their criticisms, but when the same institutions give a positive report, they are derided as ‘neoliberal, out-of-touch institutions’,” he remarked.

Soludo urged public commentators to embrace a more rigorous and fact-based approach to analysing national economic policies.

“Many analysts have interesting ‘opinions’, but I urge them to go deeper: conduct rigorous counterfactual analysis and provide credible alternatives! As a friend said recently, the task is always easy, especially if you are not the one doing it,” he noted.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s broad reform needs—ranging from security to infrastructure and constitutional review—the Anambra Governor argued that implementation remains the key challenge, especially in a resource-constrained and unequal society.

He called for a fundamental national rebirth grounded not just in policies, but in values.

“We must deliberately create a critical mass of ‘new Nigerians’—who believe in her and are ready, if necessary, to die for her. No nation has prospered sustainably without a critical mass of patriotic, vigilant and actively participatory citizenry”, Soludo said.

Lamenting the erosion of values such as hard work and integrity, Soludo warned against a prevailing culture that glorifies wealth without effort.

“The ‘culture’ that celebrates and expects something for nothing or wealth without work must give way to a culture that rewards and celebrates hard work, enterprise and integrity,” he asserted.

He identified the Tinubu administration’s Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), alongside Anambra State’s One Youth, Two Skills programme and expanded education and healthcare support, as pivotal investments in Nigeria’s human capital.

“The shortest answer is to give the citizens stakes in the society by investing in their future… These programs excite the youths/students and could hopefully create ‘stakeholders’ in future projects,” he said.

The APGA governor also warned of the damage caused by superstitions about instant wealth and called for a legislative and educational campaign to combat such beliefs.

“It is my thesis that a society where no one asks/cares about sources of livelihood or where most people expect and celebrate unearned/free money is one where transactional governance will always trump transformational leadership,” he said.

Soludo concluded by urging for ideological clarity and unity across political lines to foster a new national culture.

“We must break this vicious ‘culture’ and intentionally promote ethical-value rebirth. This is a national emergency requiring urgent national conversation,” he said.

Aburime said that the event, organised by the Covenant Nation, has the theme “Rebuilding the Nation”.

He said that the governor’s anticipated democracy day address was coming at a time when many Nigerians are expressing doubts about the country’s current direction.

“With the country grappling with economic uncertainty, political distrust and mounting insecurity, many Nigerians are looking for more than familiar rhetoric.

Anambra 2025: I didn’t consult any native doctor, says Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has dismissed allegations that he consulted a native doctor ahead of the upcoming November 8 governorship election, describing the claims as false and malicious.

Speaking through his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, in a statement released Wednesday in Awka, Soludo said the video fueling the rumour was taken out of context, saying that is the handiwork of mischief-makers.

“The attention of Anambra State Government has been drawn to a malicious and deliberately fabricated online publication and social media comments making spurious claims that Governor Soludo consulted a native doctor regarding his reelection prospects,” the statement read.

Aburime clarified that the video clip being circulated was recorded during a recent official engagement between the Governor and Anambra-based content creators at the Government House.

He explained that the session, organised by the Governor’s Special Senior Assistant on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, was aimed at building stronger collaboration with the creative industry as part of Soludo’s efforts to promote the state’s creative economy.

“The general public is advised to disregard the misinformation, as it is a clear attempt by detractors to misrepresent the Governor’s genuine efforts in supporting local talents and content creators.

“As part of the presentations, one of the content creators performed a native doctor skit, a common comic genre in Nigerian entertainment, to demonstrate their creative abilities to the Governor and other officials present.

“This was purely an entertainment performance by a content creator, not a consultation session,” the government said

  • Why Soludo cannot forgive Peter Obi

Why Soludo cannot forgive Peter Obi

    • By SUNDAY ODELEKE

Southeast Nigeria, particularly Anambra State, boasts a distinguished array of eminently qualified individuals capable of leading the nation as President or serving with distinction in other high offices. During the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2007), many technocrats of Anambra origin were appointed into key positions. Among them were the incumbent Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; the late Dr. Dora Akunyili, the formidable Amazon who championed the war against counterfeit drugs—an issue of particular importance, given the dominance of the Igbo in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry; Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala(by marriage), now the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation; and Obiageli Ezekwesili, among others.

During this era, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was the dominant political platform embraced by the Southeast’s political elite. However, in 2002, under the ideological guidance of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a revered statesman and foremost Igbo leader, Chekwas Okorie founded the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Ojukwu contested the 2003 presidential election under the APGA banner, garnering less than 2% of the vote. His candidacy was not a bid to win but a strategic maneuver aimed at positioning the Southeast for greater influence in Nigeria’s political future.

Ojukwu understood the limitations of regional isolation. He believed that a politically united Southeast could forge strategic alliances with other regions to one day secure the presidency. He had observed that no region in Nigeria could, in isolation, produce a president without broader national coalitions. This strategy of alliance-building has proven effective in the Southwest, which leveraged it to significant effect during the annulled 1993 election, and again in the 1999 and 2023 presidential elections.

For Ojukwu and other strategic thinkers in Igbo political circles, a bloc vote from the Southeast represented a potent bargaining chip in negotiations over federal power rotation. Since its inception, APGA has remained the ruling party in Anambra State. At one point, it also produced a governor in Imo State in the person of Rochas Okorocha. The 2023 presidential election presented the Southeast with perhaps its greatest opportunity yet to coalesce behind a unifying figure capable of advancing the region’s long-term strategic interests.

However, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate and a two-term former governor of Anambra State, originally elected under APGA, disrupted this grand design. Although he once publicly pledged never to leave APGA, Obi defected, first to the PDP, where he became the vice-presidential candidate in the 2019 elections. When it became apparent that Atiku Abubakar would again contest in 2023, Obi defected to the Labour Party and secured its presidential ticket.

This move has remained a point of contention among the Southeast’s political elite. Many wonder why Governor Soludo, currently APGA’s only governor and Obi’s successor (with Obiano in between), does not miss any opportunity to lampoon Obi. The answer lies in what is perceived as Obi’s betrayal of Ojukwu’s vision. Soludo and many others believe that had Obi contested the presidency under the APGA platform, the unified Igbo votes cast for the Labour Party in 2023 could have solidified a credible alliance with other regions, potentially producing a viable path to the presidency by 2027 or 2031. In their view, Obi’s decision to defect and pursue personal ambition has pushed this goal further out of reach.

Soludo, whose own ambition to lead Nigeria after his tenure as Anambra governor is no secret, appears convinced that Obi’s actions constitute a betrayal—not only of Ojukwu’s legacy but of the collective aspirations of the Southeast. Like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Soludo holds that political power is never handed over on a platter. It requires strategic planning, broad-based consultations, concessions, compromise, patience, and unwavering commitment.

Obi, buoyed by a wave of youthful enthusiasm, particularly among the diaspora, mounted a campaign heavy on soundbites and flawed statistics. He miscalculated, believing that electoral upsets alone would catapult him to power. The result has been political limbo: his Labour Party is currently in disarray, and his own political trajectory appears uncertain.

Demolition not targeted at Innoson – Soludo clears air on Nnewi property removal

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed claims that the recent demolition of a property belonging to industrialist Innocent Chukwuma was politically motivated, describing such allegations as baseless and uninformed.

Soludo, speaking in response to public backlash, reminded critics that properties belonging to the late APGA leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and his wife, Bianca, were also affected in past demolition exercises.

He emphasised that the ongoing demolitions as part of the state’s road expansion projects have impacted a wide range of structures, including churches and other private buildings, and were not aimed at any particular individual.

“Those spreading falsehood are either misinformed or pushing an agenda. No one is above the law, and this exercise is not targeted at any big man or woman,” Soludo said.

Following the demolition of Innoson’s showroom in Nnewi, some critics had accused the governor of deliberately targeting the indigenous auto manufacturer.

However, in a statement issued Wednesday in Awka, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, reiterated the government’s support for local businesses.

Mefor highlighted that Governor Soludo had chosen Innoson Vehicle Motors (IVM) as his official fleet—a move that underscores his administration’s commitment to indigenous enterprises, despite known deficiencies and safety concerns associated with the vehicles.

He said the decision to patronize Innoson was a bold statement of confidence in local innovation, not a contradiction of support.

According to him, “The Soludo administration has continued to champion the cause of indigenous enterprises in words and action, exemplified in Governor Soludo’s decision to make Innoson Vehicle Motor (IVM) his official fleet.

“It is on record that he is the first and still the only state governor to do so till today despite major deficiencies and risks associated with the vehicles.”

That exercise was carried out due to encroachment on the federal government’s right-of-way along the Nnewi-Ozubulu-Onitsha federal highway.

The government claimed that the structure was marked for removal in November 2024, after a stakeholders’ consultative meeting and public announcements.

The government maintained that the demolition was carried out in accordance with the Federal Highway Act of 1971, which defines the right-of-way as 45.72 meters from the centre line of any federal highway.

“We sympathise with all affected businesses and properties along the statutory right-of-way, but a government that has acted within the confines of the law, empathy, and compassion cannot be blackmailed by any individual or group to derail the ongoing development of the state for selfish reasons.

“Making Anambra livable and prosperous requires a state governed by law and order for everyone and not one where exceptions are made for the powerful,” the government said.

“The demolition of the said Innoson building occurred more than four (4) months after notices had been issued to all concerned, including through the Nnewi town union President General.

“It is, therefore, pertinent to correct the deliberate misinformation peddled by paid content creators to discredit the good works of the state government.

“Their narrative is false, untrue, and at best, mischievous and a political machination of a few to score cheap, albeit selfish points.

“Those paid to spread falsehood, deliberately refused to also report that properties belonging to the first National leader of APGA, Dim Ojukwu, as well as his wife and current minister, Iyom Bianca Ojukwu, churches, and hundreds of others, were also demolished in the ongoing effort to rebuild Anambra.

“Governor Soludo is driven by empathy for the people and will continue to ensure that nothing short of the public good in overriding public interest is done for the sake of posterity.” the government said

Soludo mourns passing of Pope Francis, condoles with Catholic faithful globally

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, describing the loss as a painful moment for the Catholic Church and the global Christian community.

In a statement issued on Monday in Awka through his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church in Anambra, Nigeria, the Vatican, and Catholics around the world.

He described the late Pontiff as a revered global symbol of faith, humility, and compassion, whose life’s work in uplifting the poor, promoting interfaith harmony, and advocating for justice and peace left a lasting impact on humanity.

Soludo noted that even though Pope Francis passed away peacefully at the age of 88, his death has left a void that will be deeply felt by millions.

“Pope Francis was a shepherd whose legacy transcended borders,” the governor said, adding that his enduring message of love, service, and humanity would continue to inspire generations.

“His teachings on love, mercy, and solidarity touched base with the people of Anambra, inspiring the government to build a society rooted in dignity and hope.

“Indeed, the Holy Father’s passing on Easter Monday, a day symbolising Christ’s triumph over death, is deeply instructive and a reflection on the enduring power of resurrection and hope.

“Therefore, I stand in solidarity with the global Catholic community during this period of mourning, celebrating a life extraordinarily lived in service to God and humanity, and praying for the soul of Pope Francis to find repose in the comforting grace of the Almighty God,” Soludo wrote.
