“Despite not getting the ticket, the lives he has touched, the people whose hopes he restored, and the positive impact he has made cannot be ignored. He has shown that leadership is not about position but service, and we believe such a person should be encouraged,” Oyeyiola said.

“Somolites have taken note of his good achievements and my honest prayer is that his light will never go dim. We will love him to return to politics, but even while he is not politically active, we are still feeling his presence.”

Omotola, who once contested for the Somolu chairmanship seat on the APC platform, expressed gratitude to the lawmakers for the honour, saying it was a rare recognition of his past efforts.

“A lot of people don’t believe I once contested the chairmanship in 2009 because the campaign materials I had then were misplaced. But with this gesture, people can now see evidence that I have always been part of the process.,” he said.

“I am not in this to contest for chairmanship or any other position for now. A time will come when I will return to politics, but until then, I prefer to play an advisory role. The leaders know my capacity, but they often feel intimidated when I show interest. For now, I will continue to support Somolu in my personal capacity.

Also speaking, Oluwatosin Odubanjo, councillor representing Onipan Ward A and chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Sports and Rural Development, described Omotola as a mentor and household name in Somolu politics.

Odubanjo recalled how Omotola inspired him into politics two decades ago.

“In 2003 when he contested as councillor, I was his coordinator in Ward A. Everybody rooted for him, but the party leadership favoured another candidate, saying he was new in the system. That contest brought him to the limelight, and since then, residents have been clamouring for his return,” Odubanjo said.

“He has empathy for the poor, he is generous and selfless, and he has reassured us today that he remains committed to Somolu. We are still flying high on his broad wings.”

Renewed Hope Agenda: Group rallies Somolu residents on development plan

A group, SomoLondon Movement has rallied all residents in Somolu Local Government Area in Lagos State on its plans to open up the LGA for robust development initiatives.

The Movement, according to its Convener, Gbenga Abdulai said, the plans were in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Participants for the submit drawn across various sub sectors gathered to discuss a 10-year development blue for the local government.

National Union Of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, represented by

Olawale Jayeola, lamented lack of designated garages and parks in Somolu, which according to him, causes congestion and indiscriminate parking in the area.

Jayeola said apart from the risk posed by indiscriminate parking, lack of designated garages also made his members vulnerable to incessant crack down by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Taskforce, adding” this way, we are made to suffer consequences of a problem we did not create.”

In their respective submissions at the Summit, representative of Market Associations, Chief Mrs Olufojude and her counterpart representing People With Disability, PWD, Ladipo Oluwakemi said though they were impressed by the strides of President Tinubu in the area of grassroots development, there was still need need for more inclusivity.

According to them, it is only through inclusivity that their members and the masses can be carried along and encouraged to contribute to the process of nation building and grassroots development.

In his response, Abdulai, said SomoLondon Movement had encapsulated sustainable solutions in its 10-year Development Plan to ameliorate various socio-economic problems in Somolu.

Abdulai said, the 10-year Development plan designed by his team contained measures to crash food prices, reduce cost of accomodation, equip schools with state-of the-art laboratories, and improve road networks, among other things in the local government area.

He added that the needs have been identified to set up Somolu Local Government Governing Advisory Council and Somolu Stakeholders Monitoring Group.

He noted that the former would comprise of political leaders to advice the Chairman on the implementation of programmes as is the case with Lagos State while the latter made of representatives of the various socio-economic groups, would monitor project implementation and hold the Chairman accountable on his campaign promises.

Abdulai also added that his group would involve in massive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in all sectors, particularly, the education sector.

He said requirement for all-session supply of stationery, especially exercise books to schools could be met through collaborations between the local government and corporate organizations.

Abdulai said feasibility survey carried out by SomoLondon Movement revealed that corporate bodies, especially banks would always be willing to support the local government in the area of stationery supplies to schools, if given the opportunity.

“We can ensure that each child gets the quantity of exercise books he requires for each session with the support of corporate organizations. All we need do is to allow these corporate bodies promote their interest by branding the exercise books and they would be willing to fund production of the stationery.

“So the government does not have to provide budget for production of exercise books nor would parents have to bear the financial stress of procuring exercise books for their children.

“It’s going to be win-win for all the stakeholders, especially government and parents, considering the way rising cost of production has shot up prices of stationery.”

The group’s lead also identified skill acquisition as one of the measures for poverty reduction in the society.

He said appropriate focus must be placed on the welfare of apprentice artisans to reduce the rate of truancy or malingering in the course of training.

  • AD urges youths to shun violence

Lagos State Alliance for Democracy (AD) governorship candidate Owolabi Salis has urged the youths to shun acts capable of breaching the peace of the state.

Salis said the youths would gain if they channel their energies in pursuit of positive agenda, stressing it was time they call the bluff of politicians, who use them for evil acts and dump them later.

According to him, since the adoption of the electronic voting system, politicians now recruit thugs to scare away voters in order to gain advantage for themselves.

He said: “I don’t really feel good when I see what is happening in parts of Lagos. A situation where youths kill one another for political reasons is condemnable.

“Life is open to competitions; the youths can channel their energies toward positive development. What these politicians give them at the end of the day is not enough to better their lives. It is time they shun these evil acts for positive things.

“Again, some youths are even admiring these lawless criminals’ lifestyle. They think it is an easy way to make money and live big, but this is not true. My advice is that they shun violence and embrace productive ventures.”

The AD candidate maintained that he would start his reforms at the grassroots, if elected the next governor of the state, noting that the youths would be gainfully employed to prevent such incidents.

He said Lagos was a land of opportunities, stressing it was only people who lack vision, good ideas that are vulnerable to politicians.

“Our investigations reveal that some of these youths are paid just N200, 000 to N300, 000 to snuff life from human beings. This is a case of absurdity and Nigerians should rise against it.

“The politicians deliberately refuse to create job in order to always recruit from the army of unemployed youths to pursue their agenda. It is time for them to say no to crime because the youths should be agent of positive change,” he said.
