    Abuja youths forum mourns Arise TV anchor, calls for improved security

    The Abuja Youths Forum has expressed grief over the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, an anchor with Arise TV, who was reportedly killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in the early hours of September 29.

    In a statement signed by its president, Comrade Ayuba Danladi, the group described her death as a tragic loss and urged authorities to intensify efforts in addressing insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The forum stressed that the incident highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures across Abuja, adding that if such crimes could occur in Katampe, residents in other parts of the city may be at greater risk.

    It called on President Bola Tinubu and the FCT administration to prioritize security and ensure that criminal elements are swiftly apprehended.

    The group also extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family and the Arise News team, urging law enforcement agencies to bring her killers to justice without delay.

    The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ajao Adewale on Tuesday ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of ARISE News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer with Arise, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.

    She died during an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

    Describing the incident as a cruel and senseless act that has no place in a sane society, the Commissioner of Police assured that the Command remains fully committed to ensuring that justice is served.

    A statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said: “The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, CP Ajao Adewale, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer with Arise News Channel, who tragically lost her life during an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.

    “To this end, he further directed the deployment of intelligence and operational assets to identify, track, and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime.

    “While assuring residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to public safety and the prevention of similar occurrences, the CP called on members of the public to support ongoing investigations by providing timely and useful information to the Police.

    “He charged all FCT residents to always ensure they raise prompt alarm in every suspicious situation with a view to denying criminal elements in our society, opportunity to carry out their evil plans.

    Investigation commenced as ARISE News anchor dies after robbery attack

    ARISE News Channels was thrown into mourning on Monday when a female member of staff, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu died during an armed robbery.

    The incident occurred at her residence in Katampe District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja on Monday morning.

    A statement by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the management of ARISE News Channel confirmed the incident. 

    The Nigeria Police, the management said, have however, launched an investigation into the incident.

    Beyond the airwaves, ARISE News Channel described the 29-year-old journalist referred to as Sommie as “a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”

    It said: “It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025 following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

    “Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

    “We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits,” Usman-Ajayi stated.

    Also confirming the incident, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh told The Nation the police have started investigating the matter, adding though no arrest has been made.

    She said: “Yes, we (the police) are aware of the incident and we are investigating it.  Nobody has been arrested but all I can say is that we have commenced investigation”.
