  • Grandmother, son-in-law battle for child

A grandmother, Hauwa Dauda, is locked in a battle with her son-in-law, Abdulhameed Abdullahi, for the custody of her three-year-old grandchild, whose mother remarried.

The woman had gone to Sharia Court II, Magajin Gari, Kaduna, asking it to grant her custody of the child.

Her lawyer, Kabir Alhassan, told the court: “My client wants the court to grant her custody of her grandchild as stipulated in the Shari’a law and compel the father to take responsibility of the child.”

The complainant also asked the court to order Abdullahi to pay N5, 000 monthly as feeding allowance for the child.

However, Abdullahi told the court that the case had been decided by another court, which granted him custody of the child.

He said the Shari’a Court at Bashama in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, granted him custody of his son after his ex-wife remarried.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abdullahi presented documents from the earlier court, to substantiate his claim.

Abdullahi said the child was under the care of his ex-wife after they divorced, but was returned to him after she remarried.

“My mother-in-law dropped my son at my mother’s home, saying she could no longer take care of him, as her husband doesn’t support her,” he told the court.

Counsel to the complainant, however, denied Abdullahi’s claim, describing it as “mere hearsay’’, as he was not around when the child was returned.

He said the grandmother returned the child due to illness, adding that she only sought medication for her grandchild.

“My client did not dump the child as the defendant alleged. Rather, she returned him to his maternal grandmother to receive treatment, as he was ill,” the lawyer stressed.

He urged the court to disregard the documents presented, saying it was based on a different case.

“The document he presented was a resolution of a case between him and his ex-wife, while this case is between him and his child’s grandmother,” he said.

The son-in-law prayed the court to investigate the matter.

The judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad, adjourned the case till April 9.

  • Okorocha endorses son-in-law as successor

    Okorocha endorses son-in-law as successor

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has named his Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, as his successor in 2019.

    Nwosu is Okorocha’s son-in-law.

The governor, at a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Owerri Municipal Council Area, said his decision to support Nwosu is derived from the fact that Nwosu has “the qualities of an ideal leader”.

The governor, however, said Nwosu is yet to inform him if he is nursing any governorship ambition.

He said: “The monumental achievements of my administration will not be left in the hand of any how person. The Chief of Staff has not told me he wants to run for the governorship but if he does signify, I will support him.

“Uche Nwosu is hardworking and never gets tired. He is a very humble young man; not proud; not arrogant. So, Power won’t enter his head. Despite the position he occupies, you can’t see him quarrelling or maltreating anybody. He does not segregate against anybody. I have checked him in and out and I have not found him wanting.”

The governor called on the people not to repeat the mistake of 2015, stressing that the Igbo must vote for APC and President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 because according to him, “the Igbo need the North for political survival”.

  • ‘No endorsement for Okorocha’s son-in-law’

The Imo State House of Assembly has distanced itself from the purported endorsement of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Chief Uche Nwosu, as the next governor.

The House was reacting to a statement credited to Henry Ezediaro (Oguta Council), who claimed that the House had endorsed Nwosu, who is also the governors’ Chief of Staff, as the best person to succeed Okorocha in 2019.

It described the claim as “mind boggling and unbecoming of a distinguished lawmaker”.

A statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, Marcel Ekwezuo, said: “I am constrained to debunk the news that the Imo State House of Assembly has unanimously endorsed Ugwunba Uche Nwosu as the next Governor in 2019. Nwosu is one of our own, and is eminently qualified to contest for governor.

“No doubt he is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a citizen of Imo State. This, therefore, gives him right to vote and be voted for.

“However, it needs to be cleared that at no time did the House of Assembly meet and endorse Nwosu as its governorship candidate, or any person for that matter.

“The job of lawmakers is to make laws and take resolutions which will impact positively on the people. Endorsement of candidates for whatever position is no doubt not part of it.

“Each lawmaker is free to have a choice of aspirant, but it’s certainly not a House matter. It is, therefore, mind-boggling that a distinguished lawmaker is quoted to have addressed a news conference and saying the 27 lawmakers have endorsed Nwosu.

“It is the duty of the APC to produce a candidate, and if that candidate is Nwosu, then lawmakers of APC extraction are duty bound to deliver the candidate.

“In the light of the foregoing, I believe Ezediaro, who is free to personally support whoever he wishes. Let it be clear to all that the House of Assembly is not in the business of endorsing political candidates, but of making laws.

“Imolites are, therefore, advised to discountenance the publication as a figment of the writer’s imagination  which has no bearing with the House of Assembly.”

But Ezediaro remained adamant on the controversial endorsement, insisting that “the House’ leadership denial of the endorsement does not erode the fact that majority of the lawmakers met and endorsed Nwosu as the next governor.

“We are standing on our decision and very soon, I will name the lawmakers who gave the endorsement,” he added.

  • Attack against me at Adeniji-Adele’s house premeditated, says son-in-law

Attack against me at Adeniji-Adele’s house premeditated, says son-in-law

A Former Chairman of the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Council Area in Lagos State Ayodele Adewale yesterday said an attack on him at the residence of the late Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele was premeditated.

Adewale was on Friday attacked at the A Close, 712 Road Festac Town residence of the former Commissioner for Sports when he went on a condolence visit.

Prince Adeniji-Adele, who died in India on Thursday where he went on treatment, was the father-in-law to Adewale.

Adewale told The Nation that some hoodlums and some members of the Community Policing Youth Vanguard attacked him and his orderly.

According to him, he got information that they were planning to attack him but still went to commiserate with the family after being persuaded.

Adewale’s Landrover SUV marked APP183DM had its back windscreen and left side window smashed; his Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) aide, Michael Olusegun, was dispossessed of his two bonded magazines rifle, with over 50 rounds of ammunition.

The aide, who was said to have fired into the air during the attack, was also injured.

Reliving his ordeal, Adewale said: “On getting the information about the death of Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele, members of my family met and decided that my father and mother should lead a team to commiserate with the family.

“My father went and on getting to their family house, he was attacked by Prince Adelani Adeniji-Adele who shouted at him that he should leave their house. As this was happening, my wife walked out of the house and confronted Prince Adelani telling him not to destroy her marriage or insult her father-in-law.

“She was joined by Dr. Adeniji-Adele, the eldest child of Oba Adeniji Adele, who had come out to beg my father while appealing to him to meet other members of their family.

“On that day, one of Adeniji-Adele’s sons had said he would lead boys to attack me should I visit the family house or at the funeral.

“I had concluded not to visit the place anymore until Chief Demola Seriki called me from Texas to greet my wife and also begged that I should visit the Adele family because of posterity.

“At about 10am on May 6, I got a telephone call from Chief Ajayi Bembe, one of the white cap Chiefs in Lagos that he was at the Adele’s residence and that I should come over. I replied that I have great respect for him but I was sorry because I had got information of a plan to attack me.

“So, I refused. He then came to my house with my wife begging me to follow him. He was with me for over an hour. Then, I followed him because I did not want to be seen as a difficult person.

“On arrival at the Adele family house, some hoodlums, members of the Community Policing Youth Vanguard attacked me and my NSCDC security guard.

“I called the Area E commander of the police for a back up and also informed the state party chairman Otunba Henry Ajomale, Senator Tokubo Afikuyomi, the SSS, Chief Seriki and Mr. Tayo Ayinde.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said efforts were on to arrest the suspects.
