  • Healthy lifestyle critical to productivity – LG

Healthy lifestyle is critical to enhancing productivity at work places and promoting family ties, South Korea technology firm, LG Electronics has said.

Its Managing Director for West Africa Operation, Mr Taeick Son, said the firm is therefore committed to innovative designs that will enable lifestyle convenience while creating seamless user experience of its products.

Speaking in Lagos on Monday at the unveiling of the firm’s new products, Son said: “Today, families are paying more attention to healthy lifestyle and appreciating the importance of having a family meal. These have led to a rising interest in getting smarter in the kitchen. We want to make life better for everyone by providing affordable devices,”

He said the firm is offering customers choices kitchen with LG’s fastest-growing feature for the kitchen — LG Instaview —adding that with the firm, there’s no compromise on quality.

Speaking on the Instavuew refrigerator, he said  when one knocks twice on the mirrored dark-tinted glass panel on the right side door of the refrigerator, he said the interior lights up to reveal the contents without letting cold air out. “A clear barrier called a Coldsaver Panel between the rest of the fridge and the door-in-door compartment reduces air loss even more. Savvy consumers who want to save time and money will likely learn to put refrigerated snack foods and drinks in the door-in-door compartment for quickest access,” Son said.

He said LG’s collection of high-end door-in-door refrigerators set the gold standard for food preservation. In addition to their innovative and ergonomic designs, these refrigerators use insights gleaned from decades of research to lock in cold air and prevent food from degrading.

“The ergonomically-friendly design can even decrease the refrigerator’s environmental footprint by decreasing energy consumption,” he added.

According Son, LG‘s kitchen package comes with 99.99 per cent anti-bacterial EasyClean feature in NeoChef Microwave Ovens and a catalytic easy clean feature in gas cookers for effortless cleaning

He said: “LG gas cookers with catalytic clean feature allows users to clean the oven part more easily, by oxidizing food residues when the inner temperature reaches to 200 degrees Celsius, thereby freeing you from the hassle to wipe out the backside of the oven,” he explained.

  • Italy’s budget uncertainty returns to haunt Europe

Europe’s share markets and the euro both took a tumble on Thursday as a report that Italy’s long-awaited budget was facing a delay compounded an already groggy global mood after the third U.S. interest rate rise of the year.

Italy’s main Milan bourse slumped as much as two percent in early trading, with the country’s main banks down even more as the country’s borrowing costs hit a three-week high in the government bond markets.

Investors have been anxious about Italy’s budget which some fear could lead to a blowout of the country’s deficit and put the coalition government on a collision course with the European Union.

The Italian Deputy Minister, Luigi Di Maio, confirmed that a cabinet meeting over budget targets was planned for later; dismissing a report in the Corriere della Sera newspaper which said it could be delayed.

But it couldn’t soothe the markets, especially after the economy ministry was forced to deny its chief Giovanni Tria, an academic who doesn’t belong to any one party, had threatened to resign.

“It is very fluid and it is changing by the minute it seems,” State Street Global Advisers’ head of EMEA macro strategy, Tim Graf, said.

“Even if things get resolved positively today, Italy is not a situation that is going to go away,” he added, pointing to the still growing popularity of the country’s fractious anti-establishment coalition government.

The strains weighed on the rest of Europe too. The STOXX 600 was down 0.5 per cent while the euro skidded all the way down past $1.17 in the currency market.

That fall also gave the dollar a boost after it had only managed a lazy gain overnight after the Federal Reserve hiked U.S. interest rates by another 25 basis points to a range of 2 per cent to 2.25 per cent.

The dollar index which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies was last up 0.4 per cent to 94.529.

The index had scaled a 13-month high in mid-August, drawing safe-haven demand as trade tensions buffeted riskier emerging market currencies.

The index has since fallen about 2.8 per cent though as investors have become more nuanced in their views.

The Australian dollar seen as a barometer of global investor risk appetite and Chinese demand for goods, fell 0.4 per cent to $0.7226, its lowest since Sept. 19 and not far off its 2-1/2 year lows of $0.7085 hit earlier this month.

The Fed still foresees another rate hike in December, three more next year, and one increase in 2020.

In Asia, MSCI’s index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan had ended lower.

There were, however, pockets of resilience such as South Korea’s Kospi, which hit three-month highs, as it resumed trade after a three-day public holiday.

Japan’s Nikkei briefly touched an eight-month high too signs the United States may not impose further tariffs on Japanese automotive products for now lifted carmakers, though the index eventually ended down 1.0 per cent.

Asia had generally fared better than Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4 per cent and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq had dropped 0.2 and 0.3 per cent.

The 10-year U.S. Treasuries yield fell to 3.043 percent, from Tuesday’s four-month high of 3.113 percent when traders had been bracing for a more hawkish Fed message than it ended up delivering.

The U.S. central bank did drop a description of its policy stance as “accommodative” in its post meeting statement, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell then downplayed the significance of the change saying in a news conference that policy was still generally accommodative.

Falling Treasury yields were good news for emerging markets. Plenty of EM currencies were firmer despite the dollar’s broader gains against the likes of the euro.

EM currencies have been pressured for months by concerns that higher U.S. yields would encourage investors to move funds out of those economies back into the U.S. That’s on top of worries over the U.S.-China trade feud.

Indeed, the European Central Bank said on Wednesday the United States would have the most to lose if it started a trade war with other countries, while China would be better off after retaliating.

The finance minister of the Philippines warned meanwhile that the world will be in “deep kimchi” if the current trade war drags on. Its central bank then raised rates for a fourth straight meeting in an effort to stem the pressure on its currency.

Rising oil prices also remain a major pressure point. They gained again on Thursday on an impending fall in Iranian exports due to U.S. sanctions, which are set to be implemented in November.

Global benchmark Brent rose 1.1 per cent to $82.22 per barrel, near the four-year high of $82.55 set on Tuesday. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 1.3 percent to $72.47 a barrel.

“The real big impact is the fuel price…that is what is really worrying me,” Philippines finance minister Carlos Dominguez told Reuters.

  • S/Korean league games to kick off after sunset

Record-breaking temperatures that have caused 30 deaths in South Korea have forced the country’s top-flight football league to delay kick-offs until after sunset for the first time this weekend.

Temperatures hit 39.6°C (103.28°F) in the capital Seoul on Wednesday, their highest since weather authorities began monitoring in 1907.

Lee Jong-kwoun, a K League public relations official, told Reuters on Friday that it had been monitoring temperatures for the past week and after discussions with the clubs agreed to push back kick-off times.

“We don’t have a specific temperature guideline, but with the heatwave continuing for more than a week, we made the decision for the sake of the players’ health and for the safety and convenience of spectators,” Lee said by telephone.

It was the first time the K League had ever had to delay matches to beat the heat, Lee added.

He said that it was unlikely games would be cancelled and that there were already special measures in place that allowed referees to give players water breaks in extreme heat.

Earlier in the week, the Korea Baseball Organisation said it was considering a request from players to reschedule games due to the heatwave, which is expected to continue well into August.

South Korean health officials have said the temperatures have caused 30 deaths and left 2,549 people needing treatment for heat-related illnesses.

Neighboring Japan is also in the grip of scorching temperatures, which is giving rise to concerns about athlete safety when Tokyo hosts the Summer Olympics in two years’ time.

Earlier this year, experts warned of the risks of heat-stroke at the Games, with conditions reaching levels at which sporting activities would normally be halted in the country

  • Filipinos criticise Duterte for kissing woman on her lips

Filipinos on Monday criticised President Rodrigo Duterte for kissing a woman on the lips during a meeting with the Filipino community in Seoul during an official visit to South Korea.

Duterte gave out a copy of a book on alleged corruption in the Catholic Church in the Philippines to the crowd on Sunday, saying a woman should get it because he wanted a kiss in exchange.

“No men, the price for this is a kiss,” he said, while calling out to a woman in white from the cheering crowd, “Are you ready to kiss?”

Two women went up the stage, and Duterte told them to share the book.

The 73-year-old president gave one of the woman a peck on the cheek, but signaled to the other woman that he wanted a kiss on the lips.

“Are you single? You’re not separated? But can you tell him that this is just a joke?,”

Duterte was heard telling the woman before kissing her on the lips and embracing her after.

While the crowd at the meeting cheered and laughed, other Filipinos took to social media to criticise Duterte’s act.

The kiss was described as “disgusting,” “gross” and “cringe-worthy.”

Former solicitor general Florin Hilbay said the act was something that should not be emulated, adding, “This is that path that normalizes misogyny.”

Opposition Congressman Gary Alejano also lamented what happened, saying, “The measure of a true man is not how he abuses women but how he respects their rights and person.”

The woman, who is married to a South Korean and has two children, said there was no malice in the kiss, which was meant “to entertain and excite the audience.”

Gabriela, a women’s political party, said it was unfortunate that the woman had to defend the “disgusting theatrics”
of Duterte, who felt “entitled to demean, humiliate or disrespect women according to his whim.”

“Such acts of President Duterte are only intended to divert the people from the real and pressing issues of the
    country,” the party said.

“His repeated acts of machismo is meant as entertainment to hide the reality of his rapidly slipping popularity.”

Duterte has in the past been accused of making sexist, misogynistic and disrespectful comments against women, including making rape jokes, questioning their integrity and even telling soldiers to shoot female “rebels’ vaginas”.

  • Table tennis unite North, South Korea

In continuation of the political peace move by North and South Korea, another significant milestone was achieved at the 2018 ITTF World Team Championships holding in Halmstad, Sweden, as the women teams of North and South Korea agreed to form a team that will battle Japan in the semi-final of the competition.

North Korea and South Korea had told the umpires that they would not want to compete on the table against each other when they walked onto the court for their quarter-final match. Instead, both teams requested that they wished to form a unified Korean Team to compete together in the semi-final, which will be held on May 4 against Japan.

The decision for the unified team was a tripartite one between the leaders of the North and South Korean Table Tennis teams and the ITTF.

ITTF President Thomas WEIKERT who was chairing the ITTF Board of Directors meeting at the time stated:

“When I informed the Board of Directors about this development, the unified team received a standing ovation from the delegates who showed their sign of support to this historic move.”

The move follows the North and South Korean leaders’ pledge for “lasting peace” to the Korea peninsula just last week, which portrays that table tennis is the perfect medium to promote peace through sport.

President of the Table Tennis Association of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea JU Jong Chol stated:

“This is the result of the strong support provided by the ITTF and IOC. We will do our best to get more successful results internationally in a joint effort between North and South Korea.”

The Federal Government says it is partnering with the government of South Korea to train no fewer than 22, 000 public servants on e-government.
