    South West Games 2025: Makinde highlights potentials of regional sports meet

    Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has thrown his weight behind the highly-anticipated South West Games 2025, underscoring its potential to transform sports development and reinforce inter-state cooperation in the region.

    Hosting a delegation led by  its Main  Organizing Committee’s President, Akogun Olanrewaju Alfred at the Government House in Ibadan, Makinde extolled the initiative as a timely intervention in regional sports, describing it as a vehicle for talent discovery, economic prosperity, and social cohesion.

     “The South West has always been a powerhouse in Nigerian sports, producing world-class athletes who have represented this country with distinction on the global stage,” Makinde  stated. “If well put together, and the appropriate mechanisms are put in place to sustain it, the South West Games will become one of the region’s most dependable investments in the dreams of our young athletes and the future of the southwest.”

    Scheduled to hold between  March 26 and 28, the South West Games is poised to be one of the largest sporting spectacles in recent times. With over 1,200 athletes and 120 officials expected to participate, the tournament will serve as a launchpad for emerging talents while also fostering cross-border camaraderie among the six south-western states: Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti.

    A key feature of the tournament is the Bola  Ahmed Tinubu Southwest Alliance Games (BATSWAG) also featuring the under-18 category, which is specifically designed to provide structured exposure for budding athletes, ensuring they are nurtured and guided towards professional careers in sports and in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for youth empowerment and sports development.

    Makinde emphasized that the youth-focused approach of the tournament aligns with his administration’s broader vision of empowering young people through sports, education, and entrepreneurship.

     “Sports has a profound ability to unify people, transcend barriers, and ignite social progress,” Makinde remarked “Beyond medals and trophies, this event will instil discipline, teamwork, and ambition in our young athletes. It will equip participants with values that will serve them in all aspects of life.”

    The South West Games 2025 has already garnered significant backing from notable figures within the region. In addition to Governor Makinde’s endorsement, the initiative has received support from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, as well as key traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

    Akogun Alfred hailed Makinde’s endorsement as a significant milestone in the build-up to the games, acknowledging that his support would inspire confidence among other stakeholders.

     “Governor Makinde’s alignment with this vision underscores the importance of what we are building,” Alfred noted. “The South West Games seeks to create a lasting framework for sports excellence, youth engagement, and regional prosperity. With such committed leadership backing us, we are confident that this event will be remembered as a landmark in Nigerian sports history.”

    With preparations in top gear, excitement is steadily building across the region, as sports enthusiasts, athletes, and corporate stakeholders gear up for what is expected to be a defining moment sports development in the country. The commitment and collaboration of regional leaders signal a renewed dedication to harnessing sports as a force for development, unity, and economic progress.

    As the countdown to the South West Games 2025 continues, there is anticipation that the initiative will assert the power of sports in shaping societies, providing young people with a sense of purpose, and positioning the region for a brighter, more inclusive future.

    Six states set  for South West Games 2025

    All  the six Southwest states have  declared their readiness to participate in the highly anticipated South West Games 2025 (SWG 2025).

    This unanimous commitment followed an intensive meeting between states sports directors and event organizers, Practagali Partners, at The Colossus Lagos Conference Hall on Friday, February 7.

    The meeting  underscored the states’ eagerness to ensure the maiden edition of SWG 2025 is a resounding success.

    The sports directors from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation by the organizers and pledged full participation in the tournament.

    Adding to the excitement, the event will feature a premier sub-tournament, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Southwest Alliance Games (BATSWAG), designed to showcase the region’s most talented under-18 athletes.

    With competitions spanning seven sports—football, basketball, table tennis, boxing, athletics, volleyball, and archery—the games promise to be a landmark event for youth sports development.

    The declaration of readiness from all participating states has set the stage for what is expected to be one of the most thrilling and transformative sporting events in the region’s history. The sports directors commended Practagali Partners for their meticulous planning and commitment to delivering a world-class tournament.

    “We are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the South West Games 2025 surpasses expectations,” stated Funmilola Adedipe, Managing Director of Practagali Partners. “The overwhelming support and readiness from the state sports directors have further I energized our resolve to execute a truly historic competition.” Victor Ganzallo, Director of Media for the Games, reinforced the broader significance of the event beyond competition. “This tournament is about legacy. It is about giving young athletes a sense of purpose, a platform to excel, and an opportunity to dream beyond their immediate environment. BATSWAG and SWG 2025 will serve as a vehicle for talent discovery and national sports development.”

    The meeting laid the foundation for crucial agreements regarding the event’s structure, logistics, and execution. The allocation of athletes per sport was agreed upon, ensuring a well-structured and inclusive tournament.

    Football will feature 18 male players with seven coaches, table tennis will include one male and one female player, boxing will have four male participants, while athletics will have four male and four female athletes. Basketball, volleyball, and archery will also see a mix of participants, reflecting the diversity of talent across the region.

    To foster a strong regional identity, each state has chosen a distinctive colour for their team jerseys: Ekiti will wear blue, Lagos red, Ogun yellow, Ondo green, Osun white, and Oyo burgundy.

    The designated venues for the games have also been finalized, with YABATECH Sports Complex hosting football and athletics, Teslim Balogun Stadium designated for table tennis, volleyball, boxing, and archery, while Rowe Park Sports Complex will be the venue for basketball. Participants will be accommodated at Faith Plaza and The Anglican House, both located in close proximity to competition venues.

    The stakeholders also reached key resolutions regarding the event timeline and logistics.

    March 25 will mark the arrival of participants and a technical meeting, while the games will take place from March 26 to 28, culminating in the final match and closing ceremony. Departure is scheduled for March 29.

    To ensure fair play, a modified screening model will be adopted to verify the age of participants, with each state overseeing its own selection process. Every participant will receive a certificate of participation, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded in various categories.

    An overall trophy will be presented to the top three performing states. A match-past ceremony featuring all participants will be held during the closing ceremony.
