  • Army launches operation to flush out Southern Kaduna attackers

Nigerian Army on Wednesday launched a one month special operation code-named “Operation Harbin Kunama” to flush out bandits terrorising the southern part of Kaduna.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, while launching the programme alongside the state Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, said the operation would ensure that there is no longer hiding place for armed bandits in the state.

The army chief urged the people of the area to maintain the peace and shun reprisal attacks.

While assuring that the military will always assist civil authorities to contain any crisis and prevent its escalation, Buratai said the first phase of Operation Harbin Kunama was conducted in parts of Kaduna and Zamfara States in 2016.

Buratai said, “The aim of this exercise is to ensure that this area is kept safe. I know it has been in the press and generated a lot interest. But we are determined to shoulder the major responsibility of keeping the peace always and it is better to do this job than to leave it until it goes out of hand. God forbid.

“We will continue to coordinate our activities to ensure that we get our communities to understand each other and then we provide the needed security and the right atmosphere for economic and social activities to thrive.”

Governor El-Rufai expressed confidence that the bandits that had been attacking farmers in the area would finally be neutralized.

Security reasons prompted closure of institutions in southern Kaduna – El Rufai

Kaduna state governor,  Nasiru El-Rufa’I, said on Wednesday that the closure of some institutions in southern part of the state, was for purely for security reasons.

He warned that his administration would not tolerate any act of lawlessness.

In his remarks earlier,  Maude had expressed concern over incessant killings in Southern Kaduna and called on the state government to take extra  measures to end the menace.

He pleaded with the state government to reopen institutions that were shut, and also complete some abandoned projects in the area.

  • Army denies killing 17 herdsmen in Southern Kaduna

The 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, on Tuesday dismissed reports that troops had killed 17 herdsmen in Southern Kaduna.

A statement issued in Kaduna by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Kingsley Umoh, described the report as unfounded and irresponsible.

He said the mandate of the army in the area was to restore peace and ensure mutual coexistence among the people, and warned those spreading the false reports to desist.

The army spokesman stressed that personnel deployed to the area had developed robust relationship with traditional rulers, community leaders, the Miyetti Allah and other stakeholders.

“We appeal to citizens, community leaders and other stakeholders to always speak and act in the interest of peace.

“It serves no useful purposes to continue to fabricate stories about the already delicate security situation in southern Kaduna,” he said.

Umoh said the army remained committed to the return of peace to the entire area.

  • Southern Kaduna: Christians must shun revenge, says cleric

Founder of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) the Power of God Saves, Pastor Moses Olagunju, has called on Christians to shun any form of revenge no matter the level of provocation against them in Southern Kaduna.

Rather than revenge, Christians, he said, should look up to God for defence regardless of the killings targeted against them.

Olagunju spoke at the just-concluded annual three-day men revival service at the church’s headquarters in Egbeda, Lagos.

According to him, persecutions against Christians have been on across the nation since 1970, pointing out that God has always come to the rescue of the church when Christians look up to him.

He regretted some church leaders were inciting Christians to retaliate the attacks against them, contrary to divine instructions.

Quoting the scriptures copiously, Olagunju said the strength of the church is not in fighting back but resorting to prayers for demolition of forces against Christians.

He appealed for support for the ongoing anti-corruption war by Christians, lamenting previous governments have milked the nation’s resources dry.

“Our ministry is concerned about the state of the country and if God’s people can unite and be patient with the government, better days are coming.

“I can assure that the present government will make this country great again. This country is in the midst of troubling seas and it requires patience to make it work,” he said.

He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari not to be deterred by the socio-economic challenges facing the country, urging him to “please remain resolute in your quest for a better Nigeria and God will see you through.”

  • We have restored peace in Southern Kaduna -Security chiefs

Two weeks after their relocation to the area, security chiefs have said that, peace has been restored to the troubled areas of Southern Kaduna.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the Kaduna State Security Council Meeting, Kaduna Police Commissioner, Mr. Agyole Abeh, Garrison Commander, 1 Division Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Samaila Isha and Nigerian Air Force Base Commander, Air Commodore Idi Amin, said they have restored peace in Kafanchan and environs.

This was also as General Isah disclosed that, as part of efforts to sustain the peace, the Nigerian Army is going to embark on a major exercise called ‘Exercise Harbin Kunama II’ in the area.

According to the police Commissioner, “Prior to our relocation to the place, you are already aware that the commanders were directed to move to Kafanchan to ensure that peace returns to the area. And today, we are happy to tell you that we have been able to restore peace to Kafanchan and environs.

“We are going to sustain this effort and we are appealing to members of the community too to assist us in achieving this objective. However, in recent time we have been confronted with other problems regarding the crisis in Southern Kaduna. Like I earlier said in the previous briefing that some people are actually fueling this crises.

“In recent time, we have made arrest of people who write letters that are intended to incite people against one another, to say that, it has been written that an attack will be carried out in communities. And we investigated some of these letters and we made arrest of persons, which in due we will parade before you, so that you will see that some of these inciting speeches and letters are actually not even done by the perpetrators of the acts. We have come to know that and we assure that, we are going to continue to bring about law and order in that part of the state, with the efforts of the communities.

“As long as they want peace to reign, they must contribute their quota to try as much as possible to speak to the youths who are the principal actors in this violence. Because the only way to peace is for the people themselves to be prepared to embrace peace, accommodate themselves and live together”, he said.

In his own remarks, Commander 1 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Samaila Isah disclosed that, as part of the efforts in sustaining the peace in Southern Kaduna, the Nigerian Army is going to embark on a major exercise called ‘Exercise Harbin Kunama’ in the area.

Why Southern Kaduna crisis may not end, by CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said the failure of security agencies to arrest and prosecute culprits of Southern Kaduna crisis is prolonging the fight.
The body advised the government to wake up to its responsibilities.
CAN President Rev Samson Ayokunle spoke at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
His words: “We should organise prayers again and if possible, with fasting, to seek the intervention of God so that this senseless crisis might stop. I think what has encouraged this type of carnage in Southern Kaduna is the inability of the law enforcement agents to apprehend the criminals responsible for it, and if they were apprehended at all, they were not conclusively prosecuted.
“We have had these days more often than not, the law enforcement agents saying the criminals are “unknown gunmen”. Whose duty is it to know them? Is it not the law enforcement agents?”
Ayokunle said CAN plans to provide relief materials for victims of the carnage in Southern Kaduna and the Agatu community in Benue State.
A statement by Ayokunle’s media aide, Bayo Oludeji, said: “We are planning to visit Southern Kaduna to distribute relief materials to victims of the massacre. We planned to do this earlier but we couldn’t because we received security report that it was not safe to do so. We would equally visit the Agatu community in Benue State to distribute relief materials.
“I urge all of us to pray for Muhammadu Buhari. It is our spiritual and legitimate duty as a people of God. We should also pray for the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, that God guide him aright.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said failure of security agencies to arrest and prosecute culprits of the Southern Kaduna crisis is a reason why the crisis remains endless.

CAN advised them to wake up to their responsibilities.

Despite the curfew and presence of security agents in the volatile zone, CAN said the killings remain unabated. It called on its members to continue praying for the permanent restoration of peace.

CAN President Rev Samson Ayokunle spoke at the just-concluded meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

  • Southern Kaduna Crisis: Osinbajo meets stakeholders

Southern Kaduna Crisis: Osinbajo meets stakeholders

Nigeria’s Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo on Friday met stakeholders on the Southern Kaduna killings, saying that the crisis in the region cannot be put to an end in a hurry, because people have developed hate and anger out of the crisis.

The Acting President was in Kaduna to assess the level of progress at the Kaduna International Airport ahead of the proposed diversion of flights from the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja to Kaduna.

However, the meeting he had directed the State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai to convene had in attendance, representatives of the religious bodies, traditional institutions and ethnic groups as well representatives of Fulani community.

He said a quick fix solution would not be apt as the crisis has a long history which he is studying through previous reports of commissions on inquiry, briefing from security agencies and other reports.

According to him, “I will like to begin a discussion on the very terrible crisis that has gone on for a while in Southern Kaduna. Let me say first that there is no question at all that many have suffered, families have lost loved ones, a lot of bloodletting has taken place in Southern Kaduna in the past few weeks and I want to express my sincere condolence to all of those who have lost families and friends and who have been traumatized by the terrible things that have been going on in Southern Kaduna in the past few months.

“But I must say there’s no question whatsoever that violence would never stop any of the problems we are experiencing today, there’s no way we will resolve it that way. On this matter I have read documents; quite a few of the reports, as a matter of fact,  I have tried very hard to study the crisis in Southern Kaduna, personally, I have read quite a few documents including reports of past crises, recently I have taken briefings from the service chiefs a couple of days ago  on what is going and since I got in today, I am also taking briefing form some of the senior officials of the armed forces and state security.

And I want to say that I don’t want us to be in a hurry, I am certainly not in a hurry because I don’t believe that a crisis where there is so much blood letting and hatred over the years can be resolved by a couple of meetings, no, I don’t believe that is possible.

“I have talked to his Excellency the governor, that what I would like to achieve is not a quick fix but I want us to begin a process and I want to be a part of that process that will listen to each group separately and then get everyone together.

And I want us to respect those who have lost their lives that we are not trying to fix something quick, we are not trying to resolve it now however it is resolved and pretend all is well. We will take our time and as I said, to sift through whatever is required so we can find a proper and lasting solution.

Professor Osinbajo, who told the stakeholders that he had taken enough security briefing on the Southern Kaduna crisis, however noted that, violence, enmity and hate cannot solve the problem, but process of peace building must commence to gradually face out the crisis.

According to him, “I have been briefed by security Chiefs about the crisis in Southern Kaduna, even as I arrived here today, the security Chiefs here have also briefed me. Local government Chairmen has briefed me. But, the crisis in Southern Kaduna cannot be ended in a hurry, because there is hate and anger.

“But, how many more lives do we want to lose before we stop this crisis? We must therefore strive to put an end to this, otherwise it will consume everybody.

“Violence, enmity and hate cannot solve the problem we are going through. We must therefore begin a process of peace building”, he said.

Osinbajo however promised to convene meetings with representatives of CAN, JNI, MACBAN and other stakeholders separately.

Governor El-Rufai in his opening remarks swore to God that, his administration will fish out and prosecute those who have participated in the killings or instigated killings in Kaduna State in the last 37 years.

“Ladies and gentlemen that we invited here, I will like to say that you are here on the invitation of the vice president. There are some who were not invited for the reasons that they know, because, we suspect they are behind some of these problems and we do not intend as state government to give legitimacy to anyone under investigation for being behind some of these problems.

He said, his government has identified bringing culprits to book, deployment of security and commencement of peace building efforts as panacea to permanently ending the Southern Kaduna crisis.

El-Rufai however commended the Acting President for his usual assistance to the state government in its efforts to establish military formations in the troubled zone and securing the state at large.

Meanwhile stakeholders who spoke at the meeting, like the CAN Chairman  Bishop George Dodo, Agwan Atakad, representative of the JNI, Alhaji Sanusi Maikudi and National Assistant Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Abdullahi traced the crisis to 2011 post-election violence and suggested ways out.

CAN chairman, Rev. George Dodo thanked the acting president and the state governor for their intervention in finding lasting peace in Southern Kaduna and prayed that those behind the violence would be apprehended and brought to book

Representative of JNI in Kaduna State, Alhaji Sanusi Maikudi blamed the crisis on the inability of the previous government to fish out those behind the crisis and failure to act on the recommendations of commissions of inquiry.

He said the night attacks on communities started in Jaba local government of the state as result of the fallout of the 2011 post-election violence where he said a report documented that 80 percent of the persons killed were from Southern Kaduna and 35, Muslims were displaced in 18 communities and that only 5 percent have been able to return.

Earlier, while fielding questions from journalists shortly after inspecting Kaduna International Airport ahead of flights diversion from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Acting President Osinbajo told journalists that international communities have been
sensitized to endure the temporary arrangement.

This was just as he said that all contractors handling various works
regarding the Kaduna Airport have been given matching order to ensure speedy conclusion of works as scheduled.

He said, “We are here to inspect the progress of work at Kaduna Airport because we deserve the temporal substitute for Abuja airport for both local and international flights.

“We are looking at the state of readiness considering that this is always a local airport and for that, alot of  work need to be done to bring it to the kind of standard that will be required .

“The Work has made considerable progress, honestly the work has made
considerable progress, but there is quite a bit to do.

“It is going to be completed over this weekend like the ceiling, air conditioning and all that, security facilities. So we think that, it may not be in a complete state of readiness by Wednesday. I expect that within a very short period of time the airport will be very usable and comfortable state.

“We asked people working on the airport to quickly speed up or to double the number of people who are working on the ceiling and some other facilities, they certainly need to work much faster and much more diligently to be able to deliver on scheduled.

“One thing that is very clear is that not all foreign airlines declined. Some airlines are willing to come to Kaduna CAN chairman, Rev. George Dodo thanked the acting president and the state governor for their intervention in finding lasting peace in Southern Kaduna and prayed that those behind the violence would be apprehended and brought to o book.

“I think that, foreign airlines will, but what we need to tell them is that obviously this is a temporary arrangement and they should really work with us on the temporary arrangement.

“We are concerned about safety and comfort as they are. They are here also to see for themselves, and I am sure you have seen some of them. So, we will be happy if they work with us, and if they see this as temporary, they should be able to cope with the flights inconveniences here and there. So we are persuading them that this is a good temporary arrangement”.

Why Southern Kaduna crisis may not end, says CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said that the failure of the security agencies to arrest and bring to book those responsible for the killings in the Southern Kaduna is the reason why the crisis remains endless.

CAN advised them to wake up to their responsibilities.

Despite the curfew and the presence of the Police and other security agencies in the volatile zone, CAN said the killings remain unabated.

His words: “All of us should organize prayers again and if possible with fasting to seek the intervention of God so that this senseless destruction of human beings might stop. I think what has encouraged this type of carnage in Southern Kaduna is the inability of the law enforcement agents to apprehend the criminals responsible for these killings and if they were apprehended at all, they were not conclusively prosecuted.

“We have had these days more often than not, the law enforcement agents saying that the criminals are ‘unknown gun men.’ Whose duty is it to know them? It is not the law enforcement agents?”

Ayokunle disclosed the plan being made by the National Secretariat of CAN to provide relief materials for the victims of the carnage in both Southern Kaduna and the Agatu community in Benue State.

According to the statement issued by the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the CAN President, Bayo Oladeji, the CAN boss said: “We are planning to visit Southern Kaduna to distribute relief materials to the victims of the massacre there. We would equally visit the Agatu community in Benue State to distribute relief materials.”

The CAN President also charged its members not to cease praying for President Muhammadu Buhari, the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo and a quick recovery of the economy from the recession to relief the populace who are under its consequences.

Ayokunle said: “I urge all of us to be praying for the President of our country, President Muhammadu Buhari who is sick and is out of the country for treatment; we had twice released our pleas for prayers for him. It is our spiritual and legitimate duty as people of God. We should also pray for the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo that God might guide him aright this time when he acts for his principal.

“We should organize prayers, if possible vigil at every state secretariat of CAN to pray for our country at a chosen date and that the FCT CAN should come to the national secretariat for their own. In each centre, the governor of the state or his representative should be invited to such prayer meeting”.
